Thank you for your video tutorial. I am a busy, single woman whose shower would not turn off on a Saturday night. I watched your video, then rushed to Home Depot 45 minutes before they closed. I worked on the steps and got stuck on pulling out the cartridge. That night, I ordered a puller from Amazon and it arrived Sunday afternoon. I continued to follow your instructions. It took a while to remove the cartridge, but I remembered your instructions about being patient with this step in removing the cartridge. It Worked 🎉. I continued to follow your instructions and completed the plumbing project with your instructional video. Thank you for your video.

Okay, as a professional instructor, I really appreciate it when instruction is given clearly, step by step, and points out pitfalls - "the notch on the flat side" & "make sure the bottom is flush" - which are generally common mistakes. I often watch 3 or 4 RUclips videos when I'm trying something new. In this case, I watched 3 other videos, including the official Moen video, and NONE of those other videos pointed out the "notch" or the "flat bottom". Kuddos for an Excellent video. Definitely saved me a bunch of headaches. Thank you.

Hey thanks for the video! Some of my own insights:
Bring a towel! Tuck it right under the enclosure, so any nasty dark water doesn’t drip on your tiles and grout.
Watch out for broken gaskets! A small piece of the old cartridge fell off in the enclosure, and it took me a few minutes to figure out why the new one wasn’t going back in all of the way.
When you take the assembly apart, line them in order so when you close it back up everything goes together in its proper sequence.
I’m thinking the core puller is definitely worth the 15$ investment for aggravation’s sake.
Make sure you let all of your faucets run for a little bit after you turn the main back in so you can flush out any sediment. Same goes for your washer machine; run an empty load so your clothes don’t get a rust bath.
    Thanks again for the video!

I did this yesterday, using the free replacement cartridge after I called Moen. That saved $48 right there. And I had success using the white plastic extractor that came with the cartridge to gently rock the cartridge back-and-forth no more than 1/8 turn either way. That saved me another few bucks by avoiding having to purchase an extractor tool. Another thing that I did that nobody has mentioned, is before turning the water supply off and starting the project, I ran the hot water through the cartridge for five minutes to warm everything up, including the old impacted silicone grease. Another commentor above said that he used a hairdryer for this purpose. In any event, heat is generally helpful when removing stuck fasteners and other devices like these cartridges. Mine had a slow drip after installation of the new cartridge, and so I went in again with the white plastic tool and slightly rotated the cartridge and reassembled. The leak in the full off position then stopped. But that post installation leak was probably caused by me making the mistake of pushing on the brass spindle during installation. One more thing I do emphasize in your excellent presentation is to remove the faceplate so that you don’t have to bend the retaining pin when removing it. And when you remove that face plate stuff a towel into the wall to catch the falling Jesus clip (“oh Jesus”) when you inevitably drop it into the black hole in the wall. Cheers, well done and thank you.

Best video on the matter. Thank you.
Update: I change two (non-leaking) as a preventive measure as they were 15 years old. The Moen puller did work fine for me. Great advise to use the large nut of the puller and a wrench to pull out the first 4 mm out of the valve. After that a combination of pulling with the Moen puller while pushing with the finger on the valve, adding generously W-40 where the clip goes and moving slowly left and right (but only 3 mm each direction only to avoid that the unattached rubber fold if you turn to much), I manage to extract both in aprox 10 minutes each. Quite nerve braking. Thanks again for the video.

I am experiencing a slight water pressure weakness in my bathtub/showerhead and I'm wondering if my builder also used cheap cartridges....which confuses me, because wouldn't they just use the cartridge that comes with the shower kit?
      Great video nonethless!

I watched three other videos on replacing the 1222 cartridge, and this is the best one, even better than the MOEN factory video. I liked the "mistake" you made when installing the new cartridge and explaining what you did wrong. I assure you that I would have made the same mistake

Best instructional video on how to replace this valve, hands down! That pull tool is worth every penny of the $16 I spent on it. In my case, the old cartridge was really stuck in there and half of it broke inside the valve. No way I was going to be able to pull it out using the plastic tool that comes with the replacement cartridge. I don't know how old that valve was, or if they used the lubricant that comes with it but it was stuck in there so badly that I had to use a long thin flathead screwdriver to dislodge the pieces that were stuck inside the valve. Once I did that and checked the valve really good to make sure there weren't any small bits still in there, I was able to replace the new cartridge as he shows starting around 6:50.

Excellent guide. Showing the mistake of pushing in the bronze stem saved me from doing the same thing. I used a 7/16" socket, a fender washer and a paint can opener to space my hillbilly rig so that I could use the philips head screw to start pulling the core out, as an alternative to buying the Moen puller. I suggest lubing the housing before installing the new core. Plumber's silicone grease is the best but the lube in the package works too. Wet an appropriate sized fingertip with lube and smear it around inside where the core goes. Photograph your old core and contact Moen Customer Service to receive a free replacement part. Sure, there is a nice new core in your shower faucet now; but, the one it replaced was new once upon a time. I have three of the accursed devices in my home. Moen sent me a FREE replacement for one that failed during a hurricane. Weather related, I don't think so. Just horrible luck. I used that replacement tonight when my personal shower faucet failed just as I was going to bed. OH! AND, you might suggest stuffing rags, or something into the hole around the faucet before attempting to install the locking clip. I lost three of the wonderful things while replacing my daughter's shower faucet core. I stuffed the hole before pinning the core tonight and the clip went in as if it knew there was no escape. Yes, I understand that I'm a little obsessive (and clumsy) (and cheap). Thanks for a very good guide. I liked it more than previous ones I have viewed. I think you might be one of the first to warn about pushing the stem in too far.

Thanks so much for you comment. The mistake was truly a mistake because I had to undo everything I did off camera because the faucet leaked after I was finished. That was a pain but if it helped others then it wasn’t so bad.

Thank you!!! I spent forever completing this job. My old cartridge was stuck due to the rubber on the sides. After I finally got it removed (i had to go buy the moen cartridge removal tool) I couldn’t slide the new one all the way in! The oil they give you inside the packaging is useless and wound up not being sufficient to slide mine in without ripping the rubber again. Swapped the broken one out and bought some faucet grease. Used the removal tool to insert and voila!! For whatever reason my clip wouldn’t fit but during one of my many trips to Home Depot I had bought a three clip replacement pack and one of those fit perfectly. 🎉

This is a great video. Particularly around 7 minute mark about how to property push the new cartridge in. I made the mistake of pushing on the brass and pushed it in a bit, and hence when I turn the water back on it leaked. Ended up destroying a cartridge getting it back out and still didn’t realize why it was leaking until I saw this video. If you don’t have the puller you have to push in using the remove like yours or the white plastic removal bit the cartridge comes with. This avoids pushing the brass in.

This was the best video I have seen on the Moen 1222 but I still can't get a new one to not leak. I did the first one and like you I push it in and the brass valve pushed out the back. I tried you Technic to pull it back in but the white plastic button feels loose on the back now and still leaked. So I went and got a new one again. This time making sure I did not push it in using the brass valve. I follow your method which is slightly different than the official Moen install video. Still leaks when off. Funny thing is when I bought the off brand of the 1222 before it work first time I installed it. I notice the off brand has the O ring on the front and back of the cartridge while the Moen only has the O ring on the front. Maybe I should just go back to the off brand? But I do love the way you show 3 different picture views of what you are doing, front, top and side views. That is great!

I don’t like the off brands because they are fine putting in but having to remove them was a pain. Thank you for the comment, like me I assume you watched a lot of videos. The ones I saw were too grainy or the camera was 50 ft away so I thought I could do better. Not sure why it’s leaking without more info Cheers

Best Video Ever. Another thing to add, use a Moen Puller tool if cartridge gets stuck. Mine was stuck and after twisting and pulling for an hour (5" Girl) I was about to give up with my hands red hot and throbbing. Thank you, thank you for the great, and detailed video! Your video turned an all day frustrating project into a 30 minute, and very controlled swap-out.
A couple of comments (if I may) which would probably fall into the category of “everyone knows that”, I used a wet/dry vacuum to prevent water from running into the bathroom wall during cartridge swap-out, and I used a head lamp (flashlight) which greatly helped during the removal and especially the re-insertion process of the locking pin.
    Thank you again!

Many thanks for the level of detail in both directions of the removal and replacement thru completion. None of Moen’s video provided guidance of the small plastic removal adapter as your reference to it saved me a delay as that puppy was in there good.
Moen’s videos ignore that handy adapter so that you make a second trip to the hardware store.
The no language ‘play by the illustration’ guide references it but it is out of context.
It’s all good and a hero at the moment...
