  • In this video I demonstrate how to fix a shower that had no hot water coming from the shower head or tub facet. The hot water repair in this case was to remove and replace the shower valve cartridge. The process to replace a shower valve cartridge is simple however removing the old cartridge can be difficult. A special shower valve cartridge removal tool is essential and acts as a cartridge puller.

I had a plumber come over and diagnosed my lack of hot water was due to a faulty hot water cartridge. He wanted to charge me $430! I watched your video and was able to replace it myself for $35 for the new part!
    Thank you!!!

Great to hear the video was helpful in your repair of your hot water situation and saved you some money. Having said that good plumbers are worth every penny when needed. Trades professionals have a lot of overhead to do the work they do plus they have gained priceless amount of specialized knowledge through their accumulated experience. It is understandable their services come at a considerable cost.

Lost my parents and live in the old home I grew up in. It’s in bad shape. For nearly 4 months I’ve showed with little hot water mixing in with the blast of cold water. Ice on the ground and heat provided by space heaters makes for tortured mornings! I kept thinking it was the faucet and not the hot water tank. I’m so glad I kept looking for the right RUclips video! Thank you for making the job seem simple and possible for me to do the job. You’ve helped so many with this issue! May great returns for your time and shared wisdom be in abundants!

    • @MrKistel
      @MrKistel  4 месяца назад

Thank you. Condolences regarding your parents. If you have hot water elsewhere like the sink, it probably is not a hot water heater issue. The valve could be the likely culprit. Best of luck with your repair and fixing up your home.

Ok......soooo I wish I could thank you personally and tell you exactly what your demonstration video do for me. I seriously can't thank you enough. Such an easy fix that caused me some problems.....before I watched yours. I had watched a few others that just aggregated me and the situation. The first guy I watched used the cartridge puller the opposite way you did and took me almost an hour to get the cartridge out. You're explanation and demo was spot on. I thought I had a faulty puller. And that's the part of doing this job that is hard. The rest is just icing on the cake. Now I can finally take a shower after over a week. Massive hand shake bro. (took me awhile to get all the things I needed since we're on lock down here again).
Much appreciation. Have a blessed year.

Best instruction to use Moen puller on 1222 cartridge ( white plastic tap on top) , this white tap will prevent the tool to pull out further enough to get the cartridge out. The tool had been designed to pull out by turning the body nut . Keep turning until it run out of thread ( on the same time, just keep tool stays straight on line ). Then gently pull out on the handle . Many people using incorrectly this tool and messing thing up!

Now that you've mentioned it, this video was 100% helpful. The key stop system protects the hot water from scalding, and the knob doesn't stop northeast when it comes to the cold water. So that just leaves a metal plate that will display the instructions, a way to keep my old and forgetful father out of the way, and Ned's advice from "Spiderman: No Way Home" when it comes to counterclockwise.

    • @MrKistel

Thanks and perhaps a faulty shower cartridge is the problem if you are not getting hot water. It seems to be a fairly common issue and the cartridge replacement should probably even be considered a maintenance procedure after a certain number of years of use.

    Great Explanation.
Have you experienced any case where no water coming down the spout initially and after the replacement of cartridge?
I noticed no water output from the spout but only there is a shower supply.
    Renewed the spout…
    Renewed the cartridge..still
    No output from spout.
Copper pipe from valve to spout appears clear.
Are there any narrow channels in the valve which could get choked?
    Any leads?

Thank you for the supportive comment. To confidently identify what replacement you need it might be best to pull the old shower valve cartridge out and take it with you to the home center or plumbing supply shop.

How do you adjust the valve to get more hot water, going past the hot water limiter mechanism?

When he first closed the water valve on top of the water heater, do you need to also turn off the pilot to water heater? Or can I leave everything as is, and just close the main valve?

Great video. Wish I had seen it before I replaced my entire valve. I had no idea there was a replaceable cartridge--I thought the entire thing had to be replaced. Ug. Wasted all day and a lot of money.

Thanks. Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with having made the repair a brand new shower valve. No you at least do not have to worry about changing the valve out again anytime soon. Congrats on your repair.
