I'm sitting here watching my hubby deal with this problem. Found this one because all the other tutorials had the cartridge come out like they were brand new. Thanks for suffering and showing it to help us out.
Glad it may help you!
This is pretty much how my moen cartridge replacement went. Figure the old cartridge was bout 30 years old.
This video wasn't so much about the technique, but just the drive to keep going. Gave me the confidence to finish the job.
New cartridge is installed and works very nicely.
Nice to hear that 😀
Plumbers must hate you. Look at all of these people you've helped fixed this crappy situation on their own, me being another one. I dont comment on RUclips videos, but I felt compelled and obliged to let you know that you gave me an idea I hadn't thought of, and the inspiration to push through. About to go grab my new cartridge and cancel my plumber coming next week. THANK YOU!
You welcome my friend!
Thank you for putting this up on youtube, this exact thing just happened to me today and I thought of doing exactly what you did but searched first to make sure I wasn’t being stupid.
Wow! That is awesome 👌
Add me onto that list.... thanks for this vid.
I have this to deal with today. Oh yay!
About to take mine out. Broke off at handle. Glad I found this video.
Mine fell apart as well. I used a screwdriver and a hammer to slowly and gently chip away at the plastic. Mine is all fixed. The wife is happy and said I will be rewarded with a different kind of job.😮 It took me about 20 mins. I also used WD40. I thought about using a drill but this worked for me.
Great!
Different kind of job... you live for that job? How sad 😅
Excellent! Thank you! I just broke the stem off of mine and am going to follow your troubleshooting process here. Praying it works.
It’s Memorial Day weekend. I can only imagine how much a plumber would have porked me for this same job. Thank goodness for this. Video
Glad it helps you!
Thanks for the video it was very helpful and saved us a lot of time! My Dad and I were looking at different Cartridges because ours recently broke and it popped out without the plastic cover on top of the steel interior. and we were confused because as we searched for a replacement online none of the results looked in anyways similar to ours. Your video made us come the realization on why ours "looked" different it was because it was missing the damn plastic cover/casing. In your video where it showcases how the plastic cover gets stuck inside the rough in valve made us take a second look inside our own and sure enough the plastic case of the cartridge was inside. Finding this video was a godsend thank you so much! God bless you!🙌
Glad it was helpful!
You Sir is an exceptional person!!!, thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. Nothing to hide. That is how we came into this world, "naked". Do NOT know why people can NOT understand this. WE need more like you (and me); sharing the GIFT, given. NOT MONEY. But, to help each other when ever we can, as neighbors. May GOD KEEP BLESSING YOU.
Thank you so much!!!
Took me about 3hrs to chisel out the old and replace with a new. I am a new construction plumber and picked up side work. Didn’t anticipate it being such a pain and was super cautious as to not cause any damage to the valve body. My side work price went up after today that’s for sure.
Yes, if it take more time I usually add money for the work.
Exact same thing, down to the handle choice. Helped a lot. Thank you!
Glad you can do that!
Mine was the same exact scenario. I even used pb blaster. Did nothing. Drilled it used pliers with channel locks for leverage. Metal valve came out and plastics was stuck bc of rubber. Chipped it out with screws driver. Took a pice of aluminum foil and created an exit into the tub to prevent water from leaking behind wall and slowly turned on both hot and cold to flush out valve. I think the moen posi temp valve is on of the best ones out there
Somebody finally understands my pain - Thanks for the awesome video!!!!
Glad to help!
Glad you got it. I had trouble pulling mine till I grabbed first with the needle nose pliers then grabbed the needle nose with a set of channel lock pliers , then it pull out.
this helped so much! thank you. I had almost the EXACT same problem. Only deviation is once I got the screw in to pull it out I used a piece of wood at the end to brace pulling it out with a hammer (just like when removing nails) and that did the trick.
Glad it helps
At the moment mine is broken similar to this I’m getting the correct drill bit to bake a hole and hopefully get a grip on it I also sprayed a bunch of wd40 to soak hope it helps
Wow, rough job good work though I’m impressed. I would have quit and ran out the house from the stress !!
Thank you! Yeah, I was thought same, but no one can help to owner in that staff in this day.
Thanks for the video-- It was extremely helpful.
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for saving me all the time . Just drill it don’t break the plastic
Glad I could help
👍👍👍 прям одной левой,не напрягаясь!!!
Немного пришлось по напрягаться 😁
Great detail camera work!
Thank you very much!
Hello I have the exact same issue. The stem/shaft has broken and I am unable to grab it with pliers as it is set to far inside the housing. I have chipped away at the plastic a little bit. How were you able to drill a screw into the broken end of the shaft? I feel that might be my only chance at this point.
At 1:35 I just drill hole into the center of the brass shaft.
Looks like one of my jobs! Great video thanks
Thanks for watching!
What is the function of the white plastic that you broke that covered the retaining clip?
Those plastic circle template for tile installation only. After tile work must be removed.
Thank you! This has been so very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
GREAT VIDEO, VERY DETAILED 😊
Thank you! 😀
Thanks for the video. I had the same situation with the plastic housing being stuck in the valve body after using a puller to remove the brass internal piece. I also had to break it out piece by piece. Very poor design. Since this was at a rental property, the next time I have a stuck cartridge, I think I'm going to acess the vavle body from the other side of the wall and just swap it out for a Delta. You can get Delta valves that have shut off screws, so you can replace cartridges without shutting off water to the whole house. Also, Delta cartridges are extremely easy to replace.
Thanks for advice!
Same thing...now mine leaks...hope i didnt damage the pipe
I had the same problem removing and used a thick washer attached to the stem pulling out ward with 2 pry bars. Yup the brass stem broke off flush inside the valve. Wish I had found this video to adapt this method. For a few of you that went out and purchased a new shower kit, the old one did not match the plumping fittings to the new one. Huge job redoing the wall construction, and starting all over from scratch. Before doing all this, I called up Moen 800 support, and they wanted me to go buy the worthless removal tool that did not work for the job since the stem broke off. The lady had no idea what the problem was. I want to alert you if you purchase a new one, register it to get any new replacement part or the whole things for free. Handles and Valves are do not last long. Do not take no for an answer when calling.
Thank for sharing this information!
Never had one break inside like that but I’ve had some that been really tough to get out
How did you get them out?
Mine broke while the water was running.... do I need to turn off valve before removing wall piece
You need turn off the main house water valve before work with shower valve/cartridge.
Did you really blow into the tub spout with the diverter in the closed position. Pretty tough.
You know what, (or you need to know) the diverter not close the spout hole when not lifted. Yes I was blow the air into spout and trying to clean the pipe in case some plastic debris there.
Where can I get a new replacement handle? Mine has so much sediment that the allen screw is not coming out. Shower parts are 20+ yrs old. Thanks!

Thank you!
How did you get the last bit out that was stuck against the back? I’m trying like crazy, but there’s nothing left to grab onto with my needle nose pliers.
As you can see I was used chisel, I broke it into pieces with a chisel by hand. At 6:40 you can see a fragment of the rear end lying next to the gasket O-ring
The only way that cartridge would completely fall apart like that is if it was left in while the valve body was being soldered. Otherwise it would not happen. I've experienced this situation in old buildings where handyman do the repairs instead of an actual plumber. It sucks to have to go through this ordeal.
Had luck getting a moen positemp out by using a heatgun to expand the brass housing, then using the included tool along with channel locks.
Some are luckier than others
I was wondering why no one mentioned using heat of some kind. Just makes good sense, the only rubber is on the valve so there’s nothing in the body to hurt. Good stuff, probably what I’ll end up doing.
@@Willybird567 did it work?
@@redbeardcreative Hell no,
LOL. I drilled out the cylinder valve and removed it,
Then I used a soldering iron to cut out the plastic and, remove it piece by piece. Not too terrible.
Using a clever applying on your screw with a wood block . It will come out slowly and safe .
Thanks for advice!
Like Moen Always Says Buy It For Looks Buy it For Life 🙃 YEA RIGHT
I just spent the last 1 hr 50 min chipping out the plastic to get this out. Replaced the cartridge only for the faucet to trickle 😩
They have a cartridge puller that they sell, that has a part on it,that helps u pull a broken cartridge like the one shown here!Makes it so much easier!
Puller only works if the cartridge still the metal handle to thread into it. IN THIS SCENARIO the handle completely snapped. Nothing to grip on to
thanks
You're welcome!
How many hours did this take to do? I have the same problem I need to fix. This seems like a beer job to me 🍺
One hour.
@@FixitAll hope I have that kind of luck 🍀
Exact same crap happened to us. This was our good luck video. We got it out!
Glad to hear it was helpful 😊
drill bit and screw size?
Have no idea.
Take any screw, take bit smaller and done.
How about after you put that? Lock key in turn on the water to make sure it does not leak Then put it back together
Yes, it was exactly like you said. Just not shown it in the video. Thank you!
Those are so annoying when they get stuck. They have a commercial version that is all brass. Moen 1222HD
Yes, but I am glad it was plastic, other vice no chance to remove brass without wall destroying and replace whole body valve.
I've seen a lot of moens come out broken when taking it out
Plastic parts in our days, not a brass parts like was in 1960-80s.
It took me 8 hours to remove the same one at my house.
Wow!
Mine didn't fall apart quite like yours did (what a nightmare!), but still took me over an hour to get it out! After lubricating the new one, I thought it would go in easy. NOPE. Now the leak persists. Ugh. Do I need to do it again or is there another problem?!
Ps. Thanks for the video, it made me laugh and now I feel better. Lol
Unfortunately, I have nothing to say and give some recommendations because I do not see your valve. I don't have bad experience after new cartridge installation.
@@FixitAllIt was the same valve as in the video. It was Moen. Thanks for the reply.
When you install it you can't push on the stem. You have to push on the hot cold plastic side and the other one
Why are you so talkative 😂
Becouse Im very good video operator. My video content made to be understandable for any people from any countries in the world.
No reason to spread the world's in one language.
There has got to be an easier way to do that. Maybe a steering wheel puller?
Puller work by screwed inside the shaft. So their shaft was broken. I mean special puller for cartridge.
You know moen has a cartridge pulley for that
Yes, but only works with non broken cartridges.
Over 20 years. . .
I think so.
👍👏👏👏👍
Well I bought the cartidge remove and the thing still broke. Took me about 2 hours using the non-screw method but one tip I have is to run the water briefly before putting the new cartidge in to make sure there are no plastic bits in the water lines. Of course this will make water shoot out so be prepared :).
there was still a piece of debris on the right side lol
If you're talking about 6:16 on right brass hole, it's some micro debris from rubber on the side - that's nothing for the hole in new cartridge, will flowing off with water.
Spray wd40 into cartridge then twisted it back and forth.Comes right out.
Ok, will try some day. Thank you!
I was still leaking lol
Return cartridge and buy new. May be factory defective.
Not mine but yours lol
@@lancehess2457 Where you saw the leakage?
If you have ever used a bath like this, you must have noticed that water continues to drip into the tub after turning off the valve. Because there are two feet of pipe coming from the valve and it takes time until everything drains.
Do you think that if the faucet was dripping, the customer would let me go and pay for the work?
вот гемороой)))
Ну да, однако это лучше, чем если бы пришлось стену ломать и менять весь кран.
Easy just tap the brass and use the Ona puller. Doing like this you can put a gouge in the brass and it will damage the valve and will leak with the new cartridge. 25 years plumbing experience. I would've cut that valve out faster than he took with thus repair
But I did and nothing leak.
How you cut the valve and replace through this hole in plastic panel?
My experience from 1996 too.
Thanks for tip!
Had this same call at work, so i screwed a 3in wood screw into the cartridge with my screw gun it went through the plastic and hit the stainless steel inner cartridge and pushed the cartridge out...your welcome that'll be 300 bucks
Great!!!
And dont ever use the metal cartridge like this one!Always plastic!!!
You got it fixed. It was not an easy job because it fell apart as you were trying to repair it.👍🧰
