Canceling my plumbing appointment because the universe helped me find this video. Plumber said he couldn’t remove the cartridge and need to replace pipes+tiles for ridiculous amount. Decided to give this a go. I failed trying by myself but with two people (one pushing pipes, one pulling nail in cartridge) WD40 + patience + elbow grease , it slid right out.

Hey, thanks for the video. Another person you saved with this technique!
I have guests coming from far this weekend, staying at my house. I would have paid a plumber a lot to sort out that mess. Very happy and proud to have sorted out that mess myself.
To pull the cartridge I used the plank technique instead: pieces of wood against the wall to protect, and nail-pulling side of a hammer. Worked great, and it didn't seem to pull the whole assembly sideways.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I thought it was gonna be an easy process because I watched all of the RUclips videos. However, when I took off the handle and saw that the stem had broken inside, cold sweat ran down my back. I was lost. Somehow your video popped up and it came out slicker than snot. I wish I knew who you were so I could treat you to lunch. Thanks again.

Here to say that this technique totally worked! I didn’t have a screw gun so I just used my power drill, bored a 9/64 hole and drilled in a sheet metal screw. Used a wood block for leverage and some vise grip pliers to get it halfway then used channel lock pliers and wd40 twisting to get it out completely. Awesome! So proud of myself and thankful to your video!

  • @danielboshears6474

The decking screw did the trick…I did modify your technique. I used a crowbar, and a block of wood to act as a pivot, and protect the wall. The screw pulled out a couple of times, but each time, the valve came out a little farther, until enough was out that a pair of vice grips, and a little back and forth rotation while gently pulling outward freed the old cartridge. I then cut up a piece of sponge, soaked it in lime remover, and used that to clean the mineral deposits out of the valve before installing the new cartridge. I used a couple of other pieces of sponge, one soaked in water to remove the lime cleaner, then a dry piece of sponge to dry out the housing.

Great video. Rather than the multiple tools you could have placed a piece of wood across the hole and used the nail remover portion of your hammer to pry out the screw in your old cartridge.

@@checkitout2468 I ended up using a Phillips screwdriver in lieu of the hammer (mirroring everything else you did). I simply placed the end of the screwdriver inside the against the plate mounting holes (Not sure if that was a bad idea, but it worked). It worked like a charm (I went through two screws). In my case, the interior portion of the cartridge came out with your method, leaving the outside stuck inside whatever that thing is called. Another RUclips video had a guy who used a tap set to remove the rest of the cartridge housing. However, when I talked to an old timer at Home Depot, his solution worked perfectly as was far less expensive. He sold me a short threaded 3/4 pipe (just about four inches long). I threaded that into the housing and pulled/turned/pushed the housing until it came out.

I just spent the day trying to fix the same problem. Mine was in a seldom used bathroom built 25 years ago so that may have been a factor. I finally had to use a 1" hole saw to get the plastic to release. The center piece that I drilled as you did would turn so I couldn't get the screw threads to engage.
Why do plumbers not put shutoff valves ahead of shower/bath faucets like they do sinks?

I am curious why the cartridge needs replaced for a broken handle? Mine broke off way back 7 mos ago and I had to leave it until I finished all my classes. Been looking for only replacement for that broken handle and everyone brings up the cartridge but I thought that’s only replaced when water has been leaking not just for a broken handle. Please advise.

Great idea but did you spray lubricant outside the brass metal or inside the metal around the cartridge plastic part? I wonder how the lubricant would go around such a tightly fit cartridge which is horizontal. Also did you drill into the metal stem part? I see a black plastic around that stem in center.

I wanted a certain shower handle when we redid the bathroom. The contractor used a different, ugly one. He claims that in order to switch it to the one we want he would have to open up the wall behind the shower to resolder it. Is this possible? I see tons of RUclips videos of changing the handle and the faceplate yourselves in matter of minutes I think he's lying. This is just purely aesthetic there is no leak and the shower is in the exact same place it always was.
