I cover the steps on how to replace a Moen faucet cartridge on a single handle kitchen faucet. The steps are the same for a bath sink, tub or shower faucet with the same Moen cartridge.
The most popular Moen cartridge is the 1200 brass style or the 1225 plastic body. You can replace an old cartridge with either model. Another style cartridge from Moen is the PosiTemp. It is also for single handle faucets but has a built in anti-scald feature. It will not fit in the faucets that take a 1200 or 1225 style, so make sure to look at your old cartridge.
You will need some of the following tools to replace a Moen faucet cartridge: adjustable wrench, channel-lock pliers, open-ended wrench, flashlight, and screwdrivers.
Some kitchen faucets will have a series of pieces that need to be removed to get to the cartridge. They can include the handle, handle assembly, retainer ring, pivot nut, and spacers. It is a good practice to lay out each piece in the order you removed it, so reassembly is easier.
Some faucets may also have a retaining nut that needs to be unscrewed to get to the cartridge.
Once the handle is removed and the parts under the handle are removed, you will need to take out the retainer clip. This is a "U" shaped clip that holds the cartridge in place.
In most of the packaging of a new Moen cartridge is a small white plastic tool to help replace the old cartridge. Place the removal tool onto the old cartridge and seat it between the two ears that stick up on cartridge. Use pliers or a wrench to twist the tool and loosen the old cartridge.
Remove the plastic tool and grab the cartridge stem and pull it out of the valve.
To install the new cartridge, pull the stem out so it is in the open position. This makes it easier to push into the valve. Grease up the o-rings with plumbers grease. In old faucets, the buildup of minerals and rust can cut an o-ring if it is not greased up. This will also help add life to the o-rings. Plumber's Grease is a silicone based grease that will lubricate and protect rubber parts. It also helps keep cartridges and valve stems from corroding. Vaseline and other petroleum based products are not recommended for any rubber parts. Petroleum based lubricants will swell and soften rubber parts and o-rings.
You need to align the ears sticking up on the new cartridge with the slot for the retainer clip. The clip needs to go around the ears to hold them in place. Replace the retainer clip.
Now replace all the parts that were removed and test the faucet.
If the hot and cold are reversed when you use the handle, only remove the handle and spin the stem 180 degrees. Do not remove the clip or cartridge, just spin the stem. - Хобби
Your video almost matches my exact faucet from around 1988 called Chalet. Fabulous. I had only 2 problems. Could not get the U clip out. Used large scredriver at the front, but later found out mine slipped out of the back. Moen said I can replace it in front (easier to access). I am very strong, but the cartridge just would not slide up with locking pliers. Moen suggested a 50/50 vinegar and hot water. It just took 2 tablespoons and gently pour on the top of the cartridge and let it soak half an hour. Came out smoothly. Very GRATEFUL FOR YOUR VIDEO. CLEAR, EASY TO FOLLOW, AND GREAT CLEAR IMAGES.
Glad it was helpful.

Just had to replace the cartridge on my Moen faucet today. Your video was extremely helpful. Thanks for posting it!
Thanks for uploading this clearly explained tutorial on replacing a Moen cartridge. Thanks to guys like you I save plenty on simple repairs. :-)
I always Cover the drains, to avoid losing small parts. . .
Very handy video, Helped me today tremendously. I also needed the small o'ring kit for the faucet. The silicon plumbers grease tip really helped, Thanks!
Hi Hardware Helper: Thanks so much. I screwed up a Moen cartridge last time I tried. Lubricating with plumbers grease was brilliant. Also laying the items out in a row to make sure they're put back in the right order. Many many thanks.
Thanks, it's a really good video. I'm sure it will help lots of people, even with the newer faucets that have all those parts. Moen's instructions aren't as good as this.
Thank you so much for this video. I got stuck trying to remove the cartridge which wouldn't budge .Then I saw your video and realized I should buy the cartridge first so that I could get the white removal tool which worked. Thanks for saving me a couple hundred on a plumber.
Thanks much for the visual. This is the first time that I've had to replace the cartridge. Also, this happens to be the exact faucet that I am doing the repair to. Oh, and I do agree with vxvid's comment about Moen's instructions not being too detailed. They do have a help line though for the do it yourselfer. Again thanks & best wishes!!
This is fairly comprehensive. Thanks for putting this together.

Hi,
That little tool comes in handy. Happy to help.
Thanks, this was a big help to me and allowed me to avoid spending a lot more on a plumber! Replacement cartridge and grease only totaled a smidgeon over $25 which beats a 100-200 plumber bill any day. Think I'll spend some of the savings on some beer now! ;-)
Great video. So much more helpful than the flyer than came with the cartridge.
Wow. Thanks...was able to replace mine in under an hour from watching your video
Uk Marzari
I'm happy you got it done.
Thanks for the video. It is very helpful.
Finally got it, i think i just wasnt getting the top handle piece on all the way. But thx for the tutorial, its really not a hard job but it was getting to me. Thx
This video turned out to be exactly what I needed. Our sticker didn't come up very cleanly so we're fiddling with how to get it back down, but the instructions were easy to follow and we have no more drip!

Thanks so much! You likely saved me a small fortune. :D
Hi,
Make sure the retaining clip is removed. If you have locking pliers and can grip the top of the body, that can help give you a better grip. If not, take locking pliers and grab the stem that holds the handle and rip it out of the body of the cartridge. You can now go to your hardware store and get a stem puller for a Moen cartridge that will fit inside the body and lock, so you can pull it out. Let me know if that helps. Good Luck
Thank you - I'm so glad to see that you greased the cartridge before you put it in. I recently replaced our kitchen cartridge, used the plumbers grease and was a little worried if that was okay to apply in that location. Didn't know if it would filter into the water and get us sick. Wonderful Video. It's such an easy process to do once you do it and get a feel for it. GREAT Video - nice instructions. Thanks for providing.
MomofScout Hi, get a food safe silicone grease and you will have no worries.

+Shannon Alvarez Hi, I would use a large adjustable pliers, that will give you more torque. You can also use a pipe wrench. Spray some penetrating oil into and around the nut may help too. Let me know if that helps.
Thanks, great tip.
I'm glad it was helpful
Hi,
Thanks for the info.

Great video thank you!

Hi,
If you have a new cartridge with the plastic tool, take the plastic tool and work the body of the cartridge back and forth. Grab the top of the body with a locking pliers and pull it out. If you can't get it loose, you can get a removal tool at the hardware store to remove the outside of the cartridge. You insert it into the cartridge and it has a pop-up tab that lock it into the body so you can pull it free.
Great video, but two points.
1) you don't have to peel the sticker off. The plastic around the lift handle just pulls off. It's a friction fit with the rubber piece underneath. If you peel the sticker chances are you won't be able to get it to stay on when you try to put it back.
2) When replacing the handle you have to be sure to hook it under the lip on the top of the nut that you screwed on to hold the cartridge down. If you don't it won't have any leverage to turn the water off.
Thanks for the info
Good vid and thanks for sharing .

Great video. I have a duel faucet, replacing plastic with plastic and there doesn't seem to be a clip holding either side in place like the one you mention at 2:15. I don't want to damage anything if there's something different holding these in. Thanks in advance.
A lot easier than I thought. I was thinking I would have to dismantle the entire sink and remove it! LOL

Hi,
Is it the nut just under the sink that attaches to the sink basket? If it is, I would remove the old washer and replace it. It should be a sink basket washer. It has a flat top to seat under the sink basket. Make sure to clean off the bottom of the basket. I like pipe thread compound.
Ha, no I got them. They were just in there really tight. Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for the video. I have this exact faucet and did the repair today with no problems. Only thing is I destroyed my decorative sticker removing it. Mine was down pretty good. Know where I can get another or use a different cap or something?
Also, make sure the cartridge is "open" when you try to push it in. The stem is pulled out as far as it will go.
Glad it helped
Hi,
You can run to the hardware store and pick up a tool that will remove the outer part of the cartridge. Some stores will let you rent one. It slides into the body and has a small pin that locks into one of the holes in the body. It will then allow you to pull it out.
Hi,
I think you are the right track with the vinegar. I would pour it in and let it break down the buildup of minerals. If that isn't enough, try some CLR. A bottle brush might help too. Use plenty of silicon grease or you will cut up the orings. Let me know what works for you.
Hi,
Moen suggests only using plumbers grease. It is designed to keep the rubber soft and protected from chemicals in water. It will add life to the cartridge.
Hi, most new cartridges come with the tool in the package.
Extremely helpful instructional video! We were able to successfully repair our faucet thanks to your help! With appreciation, Michael & Janet
Hi,
Glad I could help
Thanks for your quick reply. Now I only wish that they would actually come out. Not even budging. Augh.
thx a lot for this video. Do u know where i can get this white plastic tool u used to remove the catridge? Because i have this new faucet which has the 1225 catridge that i am planning to remove and put it in my old faucet.thx
Hi, it is a washer on the outside of the cartidge. Turn off your main water and remove the cartridge. Take it to your local hardware store. Some o-rings can be replaced for a few cents. Some cartridges will need replacement. Good Luck
One side of the lip broke off when I was removing the clip… how cal I fix it
Please help....I can not get the locking nut off. It's like king kong tighten it and it will not budge, any suggestions how to get it loose?
Thank you
I have a single handle shower faucet and it's the handle that's leaking, rather than the shower head. Does this indicate cartridge replacement, or is it only when your faucet/shower head is dripping that this would work?
Bet explanation ever!
Thanks.

thank you for the video :) the moen kit came with a packet of grease which my husband used liberally on the cartridge surface. i was wondering now if you know whether the grease is safe for contact with water anyway? should i be concerned that he used so much of it? LOL thank you
Gina Dali Hi, the plumbers grease is food safe. The water flows through the center of the cartridge.

Wish I had seen this video before replacing the Moen faucet cartridge in my bathroom. the Moen instruction that read did not mention lubrication beyond what was already on the replacement cartridge. After iI opened the water shut off valves and lifted the faucet handle the initial minute or so pf flow was very dark water but cleared up quickly. Was I supposed to clean the faucet body before I installed the faucet cylinder? I had expected some discoloration in the initial water flow but not the darkness of the flow that happened.
Hi, depends on your water and pipes, they can collect minerals and rust over time.
When my Moen got hard to operate, I thought I could replace the original metal & plastic 1200 cartridge with an all brass 1200B. It seemed like the switch was going to work, until I tried to instal the old retaining clip on the new cartridge. After about an hour of trying to get it on, I put the old cartridge back in. I cleaned and greased the old one before reinstalling. It is working much smoother now! Shouldn't I have been able to make the switch? Do I need a different clip for the 1200B? Mine didn't come with any clip, only the cartridge, and white tool.
+Patrick OBrien Hi, the 1200 and 1200b are identical. Just different packaging. The clip will work with both.
I would give it another try, it should work great.
If you are having a problem with the cartridge, I would give Moen a call. I have found them to be very helpful.

Hi, glad I could help. Subscribe and I will send you new videos.
Help. I followed your directions and all went well until I tried to remove cartridge. The cartridge came out in pieces and there is still part of cartridge stuck in the faucet.
The guts are out and the top half out but plastic remains inside. How would I get it out.
Thanks for any help
I am trying to remove the original cartridge on a Moen single-handle Kitchen Faucet. It is leaking badly. Installation was in August 1997 and it never has been removed. Having a difficult time removing the 1225B cartridge which is seized in the faucet. I can move it up about 1/8 of inch. Have the plastic cap to turn the cartridge but it still won't release when pulling up. Any suggestions in getting this to free up and out of the faucet? Thanks, Bob - Canada
Thanks for the video. I have that exact faucet. I did what you did but it is still leaking at the stem of the faucet where the grey plastic ring is . Could it be a bad new cartridge?
Karen Effs Hi, if there is a lot of mineral or rust buildup, you could have nicked the oring, causing a leak. I would take it out and check the orings, then use plumbers grease on the outside. Let me know if that helps. We also have a weekly podcast. Here is a link www.stitcher.com/s?fid=49441&refid=stpr
Good video. Only thing is I'd use a big adjustable wrench on the big nut instead of the pliers. And cover the sink hole near where you had the clip. But I'm just a noob and your video helped me out though.
Thanks
Great video but can you help if the cartridge will not come out? The clip has been removed and in trying to use the plastic removal tool it just keeps coming off. I tried to pull the cartridge out but it will not release. Thanks, Tom.
Hi,
I have used needle nose pliers or regular pliers on the 2 raised sides of the cartridge and used Channel Locks on the pliers to twist it. You need to break the bond of minerals or rust that is holding it in place. If you pull the center of the cartridge out, you will need a special tool to pull out the body of the cartridge.
Hi,
If you have the cartridge in, make sure the clip that holds it in place is locked in place above the cartridge. If you have an old handle, sometimes the parts inside get wedged. I would look at that. If you still have problems, call Moen at 1-800-buy-moen and they will walk through the problem with you. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.
Hi,
If you have a 2 handle faucet, with 2 cartridges, you will just pull it out with a pliers. You will not have a retaining clip.
After replacing new moen cartridge.my handle won't stay half way up it keeps falling all the way down.any suggestions...thanks
Hi, the cartridge is lubricated from the manufacturer. Sometimes the weight of the handle is enough to make it slide closed for a few days. Make sure all the parts are tight, depending on your model. If it doesn't stop sliding closed after a few days, return it to where you purchased it, they should swap it out for no cost.

I replaced the cartridge using the video. Worked great BUT now when I turn the water on the handle drops, very slowly. Any idea what I've done wrong?
is it likely to be a bad cartridge?
replaced Moen 1225 cartridge but when I turn on the tap now, it gradually closes and the water supply does not stay on full strength. Any thoughts on how to keep the tap open. No leaks though which is good.
Hi,
It should stay open. Call 1-800-Buy Moen and they will send you a new one. I've had great help with their customer service. We also have a weekly home improvement podcast on iTunes and Stitcher. Here is a link www.stitcher.com/s?fid=49441&refid=stpr

HELP! Did everything as you say and when it is all back together the water still runs out the faucet when it is shut off. I thought I hadn't pushed the cartridge in all the way so took the cover off and the clip and tried to seat it further by pushing down on it. I put it back together and the same thing. Water still comes running out when I shut the handle off. Nothing seems to be holding the handle open. Any help would be appreciated!
Hi, you can email me at fixitpodcast@gmail.com
when putting mine back together the handle wont go all the way down. (to close it). What am i doing wrong? its so simple its making me angry!
They should have a nut holding them in place. Remove that nut and they should pull out.
When I take the cap off and attempt to remove the phillips screw, the screw is stuck and seems to be turning the cartridge with the screw. So, the screw won't come out. What should I do? (I applied Liquid Wrench.)
+David Anderson Can you grab it with a pliers and pull up as you turn to put pressure on the threads. Let me know if that helps.
Make and model of the faucet?
No. Its a round headed phillips screw. Nothing to grab. Don't know make and model. It's a shower faucet with roundish handle, a little pointed on one side. I popped the plastic cap off and screw was underneath.
Try pulling the handle out firmly while you unscrew it, putting pressure on the screw. Let me know if that helps.
I did that. Didn't work. I believe I can hear the rubber o-rings squeaking as I turn the screw.
I also pushed the handle in hard. No luck.
This was a very simple repair to make following this video. However, It turns out this was not my problem. My handle was not set correctly, so the stem was not being pushed all the way down when the handle was pushed down, causing my leak, so you may want to trouble-shoot that potential issue first before you spend the $15 - $25 for the cartridge.
I cannot stop the slow leak no matter how far it it is pushed down and off, I have replaced many faucets etc, over the past 70 years a yes 70 years and I cannot stop the leak even after I replaced the core completely with a new one. Why not? I have an angry wife who has to use the faucet....
how do I loosen the cartridge if the plastic "ears" are broken off so that the plastic "tool" can't catch? thanks
Kevin D Hi, after you take out the retaining pin, grab the stem with a pliers and give it a pull. If it is held in place with rust or minerals, you can use a locking pliers and tap it out with a hammer. We also have a weekly podcast. Here is a link www.stitcher.com/s?fid=49441&refid=stpr
That pretty much did the trick, thanks!
You're welcome
Let me guess. Illinois?
Yes
You missed the most important first part of this job for me, I see you have the strainers off drains put them on better yet cover with rag some of the upper parts can go down the drain then you have more work to get them back they make a puller for the cartridge not a lot of $ most hardware stores them some will rent or loan them to you.
Hi,
I have called Moen customer service for parts and they have been very helpful. 1-800-buy-moen. Let me know if they have it for you.
I've noticed that someone mentioned these cost $15-20... i have never paid for one of these.... i change mine about every 3 months... bring the old one to the hardware store and they will give you a new one for free.... if not, go to the moen site and write them, they send you free ones in the mail... that is why moen costs more to buy upfront, but the cartridges are covered by their lifetime warrentee... DON'T PAY FOR THEM !!
Oh! It's a sticker....
They suck & too low. I like high up level new ones. I have old white one like totally rusted old. Yes mines is high nasty build up.
Good video, but unfortunately I can't get the nut off at 1:45.
Hi,
try using a large adjustable pliers or a pipe wrench and turn it counter clockwise.
Thanks for the reply, but the problem is that it is a circular piece, and water is leaking from that area. Unfortunately, I cant get a grip.
Hi,
Can you email me a picture?
I'm glad it was helpful
