    I think all the other guitar gods pale next to Rory. A Stratocaster, a Vox AC30 and a Dallas Range Master. Listen to what Brian May and Alex Lifeson and Slash say about Rory for an understanding of This Bluesman.

    I have a gallery of photos on the walls of my home; my personal R&R Hall of Fame. Above the turntable, Rory's strat and Rory shredding said strat. Johnny Winters, SRV, Jimi, Stills, Joe Walsh, etc. In the hallway, two candid shots of Rory, one in studio and another post-show, wet teeshirt, grinning ear to ear. When my now grown kids first saw the redecorating project, they wanted to know who was taking up all this wallspace? I said, "That is the guy who should have been your dad." I used to wonder why you never heard covers of Rory's songs and then I realized, no one could play like Rory. God, I'm glad we were on the planet at the same time.

    It bothers me that so many people refer to Rory as “underrated”. Not to his fans he wasn't. What the more recent listeners may not know is that Rory wasn't looking for fame. He did NOT want to become a "Rock Dinosaur". I recall an old interview, in which Rory actually said that the worst possible thing he could imagine happening to him, was to have a hit song. The man not only lived for his music but he was happiest taking it to his fans. Let's not forget that apart from his incomparable live shows, the man sold well in excess of 30 million albums *before* he passed away. Underrated? I think not.

      I get what you are saying but that is said in reference to the general population. Everyone knows who EVH and Jimmy Page are, but probably no more than 10% of those same people know about Rory. Even to this day when Rolling Stone magazine put out a top 100 guitarist list, Rory won't even be mentioned, yet they'll have someone like Lou Reed in the middle of the pack.

    I had the pleasure of meeting him in person on my first trip to London in 1975. In front of Earl's Court tube station. He was really nice and patiently answered a few questions about his amplifier etc. then shook hands and wished me a pleasant stay in London. A very kind and humble gentleman, no star attitude at all. Sorely missed!

    Out of all the major white blues rock guitarists that populated the airwaves during that era, Rory was probably the only one who never consciously tried to turn his playing into a technical showcase just for the sake of his inflated ego. In fact, not only was he someone who favored a more gutsy, raw and purposefully simplistic approach than many of his peers, but he was also one of the precious few who understood that playing less can have a greater effect than flashy flurry-of-notes shredding.

    I saw this tour in 74 and Rory played like his life depended on it. Played a good two hours plus and was so enthusiastic. A couple of years before i saw Led Zeppelin. The difference between them was astonishing. Zep turned up late, no sound check and didn't give a fuck expecting a standing ovation just for being threre (which they got, bar me) whereas Rory was the ultimate showman and gave 100%. Saw him many times since, always great!

    Like Dice (see other post), I was at the Central Park concert in the mid-1970s where the crowd was so amazed by Gallagher, as an opening act, that they didn't want to hear the headliner that night, a relatively new band named Aerosmith. The audience threw everything they had available at Aerosmith to get them to stop playing, so Rory could come back and play some more. The exasperated drummer finally threw his sticks at the crowd, cursed them out, and the group quit playing. A few months later "Dream On" hit the airwaves, and I think Aerosmith played Madison Square Garden the next time they came to town (the rest is rock'n roll history, as they say). But that night, as ugly as it was, bore testimony to how brilliant Rory Gallagher was on the guitar, and I was lucky enough to hear him.

A British / English music mag had polled it's readers for their selection of world's greatest guitarist and Rory came no. one . The mag probably was the NME ( New Musical Express ) and wasn't published in the USA. @ Kevin and @bonzo.......Rory may have been “under appreciated” but I'd never say “underrated” - not to any of us who knew of the exceptional talent that was Rory Gallagher. It's been well over 40 years of listening (for me) and Rory's versatility is such that I never tire of him. I long to see this wonderful man remembered in The Blues Hall of Fame - Rory not only kept the Blues alive, he breathed new life into original old Blues numbers that may otherwise have been all but forgotten. John Amaral .........that’s a lovely thing to say John, thank you. I wouldn’t worry about being a newer convert - what a delight for you to be able to discover Rory’s amazing catalogue anew and as +Martin has so rightly said, after all these years, we are still finding Rory gems on RUclips. Be sure to check his early work with Taste too (if you haven’t already done so) I always thought they were sensational.

    • @johnamaral1786
      @johnamaral1786 6 лет назад +2

      Linda Jones you are a gem. Yes, it's great that there are so many Rory supporters finding so many Rory shows preserved on audio and (especially) video tape which they then faithfully keep alive by uploading them for both young and old to discover and enjoy for the first time or once again and again and again... And yes, it is wonderful to hear these amazing performances for the first time...though, as you know, just as wonderful to hear repeatedly. Thanks for the tip on Taste...yes, I have already done so. I do like the Taste recordings, but do prefer Rory Gallagher for the original material he created, while he continued to cover songs of his idols. Rory Rock 'n' Blues...I love it. Keep Roryin' on.
      I seem to remember you also like Roy Buchanan. Have you seen the video just posted by Klaus Erlinghagen? I think you might like it.

      John Amaral ........hi again John, (a rough old “gem” mate but thank you) and yes I’ve long loved Roy as well - appreciate your sending the link to Roy too thanks, I hadn’t seen it. I’m just an old music-lover and discovered both Rory and Roy in my mid-teens. While it’s true that much of the Taste material consists of early Blues covers, I think tracks like “Blister on the Moon” and “What’s Goin’ On” are excellent songs with clever lyrics written by a very young Rory (18/19) that still sound amazing to me almost 50 years on. I agree though, Rory went on to amass a vast catalogue of wonderful music, (he was a perfectionist who nixed a lot of material too) a rare talent who could do it all. I love a great deal of different music but Rory was always special.

    I was @ that show @ the Wollman Rink, the exact date was Sept. 8,1974(I still have the Schaefer Music Festival Schedule from that year!) That was back when they sold beer in bottles @ these shows,Rory opened up & blew the crowd away. When they wouldn't let him do an encore ,the bottles started flying towards the stage! The flying bottles continued when Aerosmith came on, I remember them breaking against Perry's amp. The people were assholes, but I walked away from that show a HUGE Rory fan!!

    NY born, I lived in Ireland 1975-80 and got to see and appreciate Rory there on TV and radio constantly - I remember holidaying in Ballybunnion Kerry and seeing the live show from Germany where Rory broke a string mid song and played on w/o missing a beat - beyond extraordinary..... Back in NY from 80+ I saw him open for Rush in 1982 at MSG to rock-jerseyed, dopey fools booing to get what US FM radio had programmed into them - I guess you can't fault the blind for being prevented from not seeing by the US music business? I also was at amazing close-up shows at L'Amours Brooklyn and the Academy I believe last was in 91. Always shivers down spine stuff from an amazing talent who had such incredible modesty and class - do you see that today? He was never marketed properly but in a way became a secret and beloved choice amongst those in the know.... He is among the pantheon of the greatest ever without debate and the recordings are all there to settle amateur debates... You have to love Hendrix in 69 deferring to "ask Rory" when directly asked what's it like to be the world's greatest guitarist... Enough said....

      Sean Conroy, thanks for sharing your story. This recording of the incomparable Rory is the perfect set and performance to serve as proof of your comment as to his status among guitarists. But...he was more than just a guitarist...he was a multi-instrumentalist and a consummate showman. And there are many performances (most have been recorded it seems, thankfully) to prove that as well. It's unfortunate for music lovers that he was unappreciated by the US music industry.

    Any solo he starts runs fluently and comes with a "happy ending". Also his tone (strat fretboard/fingers/Vox) is unmatched.
    Modest, friendly and virtuoso: that's Rory! (howling along with his guitar like no one else) Thanks for this up-load!

    Saw a bunch of those shows too, I remember that Bad Company w/ J. Page were opening for Foghat. It was a few days before the Rory show-Sept.4,1974. I think that was Bad Co.'s first show in the USA. When I dug out the schedule I had saved to check on the Rory/Aerosmith date, I was reminded of the ticket prices- $2.50 for floor seats, & $1.50 for the stands. Now THOSE were the days!!!!!!!
