I’m 60 and Irish. And yes it’s never too late to discover good music, especially Rory. I’ve even worn plaid shirts all my life as a result. The man was something else, we’re all very proud of Rory here in Ireland. Greatly missed. Keep the faith brother. ❤️🤘
Rory was legendary, but it helped that he surrounded himself with a rock solid rhythm section. They're all talented musicians, and to me, Rory Gallagher and Gerry McAvoy are one of the greatest musical pairings ever.
Rory Gallaghers Musik, die beste Medizin für einen alten Mann ! Weckt Sehnsüchte, Träume, Freiheitsdrang.Schön war die Jugend, Sie kommt nicht mehr ! 1976 war ich 38 jährig. Danke Rory ! R.I.P.
I visited Rory’s hometown of Cork and went to the small music library they’ve established in his honor. It was a moving experience. I’m 65 and have heard all the great blues and rock guitarists and to my subjective opinion, Rory had as much command over his instrument as anyone I’ve ever seen or listened to. He was also an incredibly nice and humble individual. I had the opportunity to see him perform at a small club in Philadelphia in the mid 70s. The performance left me as impressed as I’ve ever been by any musician I’ve ever seen and I’ve probably been to several hundred concerts over my six decades. If you haven’t seen it, Ghost Blues, the documentary about Rory, is very well done. Hope you enjoy it. ☮️💚🍎
Thanks for the heads up about the music library in Cork, and the documentary. I saw Rory play live twice, both concerts were phenomenal. This man had no pretensions whatsoever.
I saw Rory open for I believe Deep Purple at the Spectrum, it was the 70’s, he might have opened for someone else, but again it was the 70’s🙃 The best Rory show for me was 73 at Max’s Kansas City in NY. I was right up front. He tore it up. Rory was one in a million.
How lucky are we to have such great footage of this genius in his prime. Rory was a brilliant blues player, and now as a guy in his 70s i am still in as much awe of him now as i was then. Fortunately his legacy is left for all to see.
I agree 100%. He is rightly revered for his virtuosity on any type of guitar, but is often not credited enough for his singing. Bluesy, soulful, gritty, just a wonderful fit for the type of music he wrote or played.
Saw him several times in bomb-blasted Belfast during the seventies, the only major star to be unafraid to come and play for us! Can't say how much he was loved for that alone, on top of the brilliant music!
When he played in Belfast in 1984 in a legendary set at the Ulster Hall, my older brother went, but I was just too young to be allowed to go by my parents. It's one of my biggest regrets. But at least we have footage to look back on. Most RUclipsrs point towards his performance of Shadowplay at Montreux, but for me, the version from that night in Belfast tops it due to the sheer intensity and the completely unbounded enthusiasm and craziness of the crowd bouncing around like lunatics (it wasn't an "audience"). The roadies were dragging people off the stage who just wanted to touch the great man. Just a mental night... it doesn't get better... and the finish of the track when you think it's done and then he fires it up again... just awesome. His LPs are fantastic, but it's the live performances that set him apart from the rest. No fancy lights shows or visual effects, just sheer unadulterated blues/rock that smacks you in the face, grabs you and doesn't let go. The GOAT, bar none.
A transcendent talent he was. He could play practically every instrument and play well. A very talented man was Rory. As the likes of him we will never see again on this planet.
My parents let me stay up late to watch this gig live on t.v., 44 years ago. That's when I fell in love with Rory. Kinda mind-blowing to be watching this again in '20, as an old 58 year old. Cheers
I got to see him three or four times. When I saw him at the Bottom Line in NYC Jerry Hall was in the audience. He always gave everything he had at every show. The last time I saw him was rough. It was clear that something was wrong and he passed shortly after that performance. I grew up learning his songs and wanting to be like him. No flashy nonsense just talent. I'm not sure if I miss Rory or miss those days. I suspect it's a little of both.
Rory was the reason I got into music. Saw him on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 74 I was just six years old. He literally blew me away. What natural talent. I’ve never stopped listening to him since.
I first encountered Rory Gallagher on Friday August 2nd 1968 ( I was twenty then) when he was still leading his trio called Taste. By that time I had already seen Jimi Hendrix live on two occasions. But for me Rory was even more exciting than Jimi. The sounds he was getting out of his battered old Vox AC30 amp that night was incredible. The gig was the regular Friday blues night at the California Ballroom in Dunstable. When we found out he was playing the following night in Saint Albans Civic Hall only about another ten miles down the motorway, we were there like a shot. Rory’s playing that night was just as impressive as the previous evening, he was in incredible form. Jimi Hendrix was once asked by a music journalist what was it like to be called the world’s greatest guitarist. Jimi, modest as ever, replied “ You should be asking Rory Gallagher that question”.
Saw him once . Awsome . Loudest three piece I have ever seen. The balcony I was on was vibrating . Took me a day to get my hearing back lol. RIP Rory .
Happy heavenly birthday today to Rory. Still one of my favorites - I started listening to him when I was 14 or 15 years old; 67 now. So glad I got to see him live. @mags jay yeah, I was lucky along with lots of others :) But those days were hard for Irish musicians. Only a few got through to make a decent career, but the ones that did are still celebrated today.
Good question about his blues influences. Van Morrison grew up in Belfast and I think his father was in the merchant navy; he'd bring records home from the US. Rory was born in Ballyshannon but grew up in Cork. My only guess is he heard blues music on the radio.
hi, saw Rory first with taste 1969. Weren't we lucky? When you saw him, and at age, play the way he did (and saxophone) it was beyond comprehension. Thank the Lord there are so many videos. Never seen his like since. First time, was breathtaking, nothing prepared you for your first Rory 'experience live. ❤👍✌
@@joyceh2721 Yeah, nothing could have prepared you for that Taste of raw cosmic blues.... it was mesmerising. I just could not at all understand how anyone in Ireland could learn to play like that! We got to see Skid Row with Gary Moore and the start of Lizzy.... it was a great time for music ... the vibe at concerts was amazing together .... music orgies, I would call them. Grannies Intentions are another great band from the day.
@@JohnOShaughnessy hi. I'd never seen anyone play like Rory before. This, not as tall as you'd think, delicate looking, beautiful schoolboy (he looked so young, and like he'd skipped school) could pick up that guitar and be transformed, was miraculous..... There were some great bands around, late 60s to end of 70s was a good time to be around. Great gigs to go almost every night. Jeez, those were the days. 👍✌
Saw Rory in 73 or 74 in Birmingham Town Hall when the band failed to turn up being prevented by fog and Rory did a wonderful acoustic set and asked ones from the audience to join him on stage and jam. Best concert ever and they still added in the proper concert at the end of the tour to fulfil the tickets.
So kids, when I was young, there was no Google. Someone like Rory Gallagher would mention a name before he played his version of their old song, and I would go from shop to shop, asking "Have you heard of.."
He always showed the appropriate respect to the (largely black) original songwriters, unlike many of his (largely white) contemporaries. I also learnt a lot from him. Sadly missed.
Those were the days. I'm a follower from the 70's. Rory was very rarely on tv and even less on radio. It was a case of finding where they played next and try by any means to get to a show near you. Rory g, one of a kind and sorely missed.
I felt in love with the guy, his wonderful band and his amazing music in the 70ties. In de Europahal in Tielt somewhere in 1977, I witnessed one of the most blues rock driven performance of my life!
Lou! Rod! ALL the lineups were great, but this is my personal favorite. (mebbe cause I saw it in '73, lol) RIP Rory, Rod, Lou, Wilgar, and Ted. Thank You! eta And, Thank You, Gerry! Keep waving the flag.
the greatest beating the shit out the dung! oh man, how i love this! what a wonderful treat! how can pain cause that much pleasure? Rory, we love you, especially in this band, all masters at their craft and we will never forget you! hell, how could we????
I Saw this for the first time ~20 years ago and was blown away, didn't know him before. So I sat my guitar down and just watched this quite loud at night and bought records the day after ^
RORY GALLAGHER was so ahead of his time that his music still is relevant unlike other music ' stars ' whose music is categorised as 60s 70s 80s legendary thing . Rory Gallagher was , is and will be beyond time boundaries !
There are some moments here where you can see why Rory was just so amazing! He would just suddenly step on the gas! Normally this meant he also would shoot across the stage! I saw him at the whisky and really only knew of him. I had seen all the greats by that early 70's date but he was, as you can see, just genius.
This man, this music, there is so much I want to say. My brother started with the blues, into folk, and ended up his career, in an Irish group, He died in 1994--great on the 12 string, and banjo too--what I am trying put into words here, is that Rory summed up all that I knew about music which I experienced from my cradle. x
Fantastic!! What a nice big noise with just four musicians! I am fond of Led Zep which I happened to listen to when I was 11,discovered Rory Gallagher a few years later and today can say this band sounds as good or even better than LZ. Thank you WDR Rockpalast!
I keep coming back to "Nothing But The Devil Blues". It's the essence of how the Blues feels, created by a master talent. Awesome in the true meaning of the word.
I love how happy he was to play the first song again. He gently said so to the audience with a little smile. Other top musicians might have told the host to piss off.
Rory was one of the best Guitar Player of all the Time. He played in the same Level like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton , Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Page, Gary Moore, Eddi Van Halen, Brian May and Jeff Beck. Rory Played One Note, and you can say yes, this is Rory Gallagher. He was Great.
Mentioning Frankfurt caught my attention, so I´ve just listened to some stuff of your ´78 Chippewa Lake Park Gig. Good stuff - too bad there are no pix. If Rory kind of made you do that - it´s brillant, isn´t it? Best wishes from Frankfurt! M*
I saw Gallagher with his group Taste in Wuppertal Townhall in the early 70s (for 5 DM). Off course with the old green/blue Fender strat. It was amazing. We loved him very much, he was very very talented. RIP Rory!
I'm only 30 but Rorys been my favorite guitarist the last decade. I hadnt listened to him much in years and it seems like he's being recognized even more and I'm all here for it!

As a pianist I’m in awe of Lou Martin, great player and brave to go up there with Rory who never plays a song the same way each time it’s played live, Love Gerry Mc on bass, up there with Entwhistle, and Rory, well what you can you say? Best guitarist, mandolin, and slide guitar and all round blues musician.. or at least equal to the best. , he will be played and admired for centuries to come!! How cool is that.

What an group of musicians, so tight and Rory just adding the cream on top with both Acoustic and Electric in a an amazing layer of just crazy mixture of blues, rock, country and the odd sliver of trad to top it all off.
I was lucky enough to see Rory live, he was incredibile!
The best!!! Rory Gallagher, great show, listening from Peru.
That's great 👍🇮🇪
Perú:-)
Germany..
What a talent ! He wrote great songs - played others - and his voice complimented his music .
Happy Birthday Rory, pure energy. I was lucky to have seen him in the 80s
So kids, when I was young, there was no Google.
Someone like Rory Gallagher would mention a name before he played his version of their old song, and I would go from shop to shop, asking
"Have you heard of.."
Wow
Yeah I know! There are some real advantages to Internet aside from the commercials stuff of course
Ya know, that wasnt that long ago !
Extremely pleased this was uploaded. RIP Rory.
Rory was lover and gifted to what he gave. Damn sure to never pay you to a bet.
And thàt kiddies,is how you do it!! RORY-STYLE!!!
I felt in love with the guy, his wonderful band and his amazing music in the 70ties. In de Europahal in Tielt somewhere in 1977, I witnessed one of the most blues rock driven performance of my life!
Bravo ! Rory forever !
Rory Live is an experience everyone should have.❤❤❤❤
Monster performer, guitarist extraordinaire.
love this bass player. great gig.
one of my fav bassists
Yes, it’s a beastie Bass player!
I love how he gave the same crazy energy every time he was on stage
Lou! Rod!
ALL the lineups were great, but this is my personal favorite. (mebbe cause I saw it in '73, lol)
RIP Rory, Rod, Lou, Wilgar, and Ted.
Thank You!
eta
And, Thank You, Gerry! Keep waving the flag.
Ric
That was beautiful
God bless you for your thoughts
Yea saw them twice in national stadium dublin.never forget!
Rory in his prime with The Band. Such an honest musician/bluesman.
I will always love Rory thank you for the music
Legend.
Rory amazing bluesman, the band is so tight.
No gimmicks, no attitude. All about the music. And good music.
Tight as f
I saw Rory Gallagher in 1983, I was 19 years old and it was a mémorable good time.
From Colmar, France.👏😎🍷☕
the greatest beating the shit out the dung!
oh man, how i love this! what a wonderful treat! how can pain cause that much pleasure?
Rory, we love you, especially in this band, all masters at their craft and we will never forget you!
hell, how could we????
I Saw this for the first time ~20 years ago and was blown away, didn't know him before.
So I sat my guitar down and just watched this quite loud at night and bought records the day after ^
RORY GALLAGHER was so ahead of his time that his music still is relevant unlike other music ' stars ' whose music is categorised as 60s 70s 80s legendary thing . Rory Gallagher was , is and will be beyond time boundaries !
The album Deuce has aged best for me. That's his finest songwriting in my opinion
Rory The Greatest !!!
@Θοδωρης.
Hi you sweety boy!!
The night is long!
my baby boy
There are some moments here where you can see why Rory was just so amazing! He would just suddenly step on the gas! Normally this meant he also would shoot across the stage! I saw him at the whisky and really only knew of him. I had seen all the greats by that early 70's date but he was, as you can see, just genius.
RORY GALLAGHER, GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN...!
What !!! no pedals or gizmos....... pure genius.
Amazing performance...Rory in the❤
Rory wipes the floor with Clapton.Period.
Fantastic!! As always.. Rory.. bringing JOY!!!. Love ❤️❤️ to you forever Angel Rory. XO 😘
Agreed, different animal
100%
of COURSE he does...
Because Rory has soul.
This was my first concert, he was opening up for Jethro Tull at Shea Stadium in July 1976, followed by Robin Trower.
Man what a first concert
Mine was Van Halen in 1980.
You got to see two of my favorite guitarist that day.
Trower and Rory. Wow
Sadly Rory got lost,
...ah, the 70s.
This man, this music, there is so much I want to say. My brother started with the blues, into folk, and ended up his career, in an Irish group, He died in 1994--great on the 12 string, and banjo too--what I am trying put into words here, is that Rory summed up all that I knew about music which I experienced from my cradle. x
Maybe you're brother's met up with and is now playing alongside Rory, Jimi, Frank and a few other luminaries.
I think your brother is with Rory
And Gary Moore with Phil following up on bass
@@neilangus4401 Bless you
@@michellewilsdon1786
And you
Rory was my hero 55 years ago. Glad I lived through these times even if my number is nearly up. The footie was good back then and not ruined by money.
Lou Martin on piano is a REAL GENIUS !! That's all folks !!!
Wow! I just now discovered this gem of a musician! Anyone that thinks I have talent I will gladly correct them and refer this guy.
This concert is amazing. I love the acoustic stuff in particular, Rory is a beast!
oh my Gosh! He is amazing! The best guitar player! Miss you Rory!
Fantastic!! What a nice big noise with just four musicians! I am fond of Led Zep which I happened to listen to when I was 11,discovered Rory Gallagher a few years later and today can say this band sounds as good or even better than LZ. Thank you WDR Rockpalast!
how these guys play so good when they're all sweaty?? rory's absolutely beautiful, oozing talent with the whole body ♥
Only one thing to say about Rory, simply he was the GOAT
I keep coming back to "Nothing But The Devil Blues". It's the essence of how the Blues feels, created by a master talent. Awesome in the true meaning of the word.
Rockpalast delivers shows with musicians in their prime. This is another example.
I love how happy he was to play the first song again. He gently said so to the audience with a little smile. Other top musicians might have told the host to piss off.
Not Rory❤
Rory was one of the best Guitar Player of all the Time. He played in the same Level like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton , Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Page, Gary Moore, Eddi Van Halen, Brian May and Jeff Beck. Rory Played One Note, and you can say yes, this is Rory Gallagher. He was Great.
Brian may got his guitar sound from rory
Such a Beast on the Guitar.. one of the VERY BEST ever!! It was all about the music for him.
Saw him play on a sunny Sat. afternoon in Frankfurt 1972. Never heard of of him. Changed my life. See my avatar
@@mikestecherart3595 Thank you
Love that scat technique, authentic, and true blue, with some Irish 💚
I saw Gallagher with his group Taste in Wuppertal Townhall in the early 70s (for 5 DM). Off course with the old green/blue Fender strat. It was amazing. We loved him very much, he was very very talented. RIP Rory!
I'm only 30 but Rorys been my favorite guitarist the last decade. I hadnt listened to him much in years and it seems like he's being recognized even more and I'm all here for it!
This is as good as it gets...True raw talent..Rory Gallagher genius
Τι όμορφος που είναι δεν χορταίνεις να τον βλαιπεις και να τον ακούς γιατί έφυγε τόσο νεος
I really wish I would've gotten into Rory g.long before he left US I was RAISED on rock and love n play all sorts of music but somehow I didn't find out just what a great man and guitar king and beautiful SOUL singersongwriter he was really he's a great different kind of killer MUSIC MAN RIP RORY G......YOU DA MAN ....
As a pianist I’m in awe of Lou Martin, great player and brave to go up there with Rory who never plays a song the same way each time it’s played live,
Love Gerry Mc on bass, up there with Entwhistle, and Rory, well what you can you say? Best guitarist, mandolin, and slide guitar and all round blues musician.. or at least equal to the best. , he will be played and admired for centuries to come!! How cool is that.
There only was one Rory Gallagher. Gerry McAvoy is a great bass guitarist too. RIP Rory
❤
seen rory a few times great days, sadly we lost him but with film he will live forever RIP .
He was and is one of the BEST.
The perfect couple from Ireland, Rory and Gary Moore, on guitar and Phil on bass.
Now they are playing together in heaven
That would've been best band ever.
@@ezioauditore7427 Three good singer in one band.
Thanks for providing this concert. I still have a the video tape I recorded when this show was originally broadcasted. Saw Rory play at least 25 times. Always brilliant.
Ooooo. How wonderful!
What an group of musicians, so tight and Rory just adding the cream on top with both Acoustic and Electric in a an amazing layer of just crazy mixture of blues, rock, country and the odd sliver of trad to top it all off. Can you imagine what the youngsters nowadays would have made of his performance.
