Sounds like such a fun, glamorous trip! I'm really enjoying catching up on your videos lately esp. because I've been on a soft low buy this whole year. You're inspiring me to go harder lol. I've been enjoying bronzer as blush right now too, idk why, because I really do enjoy blush. I've been contemplating Dossier for a while now. I agree with a lot of your thoughts surrounding dupes. I know there is no original thought in art and we are all drawing inspiration from each other but yes I do agree that blatant knock offs never sit well with me. Interesting to hear your opinions about what you tried. You sparked a thought: I wonder if Dossier is kind of the trickle down thing similar to drugstore makeup. I hear so many people talk about drugstore dupes of products and to me, packaging, branding of high-end brands is part of the experience. Sorry for the long comment, just enjoying the great discussions you always raise! 😊

Good questions about dupes. How I feel about it somewhat depends on the brand. I own one Dossier fragrance and it’s a dupe for Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry, which is $375 for the 1.7 oz. I could not justify that price, especially when I knew I was going to use the fragrance as a mixer with others. While I do understand that a one or a few creative individuals blended the Lost Cherry fragrance, and I do see the ethical issue with copying their work, Tom Ford as a whole is not going to be significantly affected by me buying a dupe of their outlandishly marked up products. If it was a small, independent boutique perfumery, I would have a much bigger issue with dupes

I’ve never smelled Baccarat or any dupes, but the plastic Barbie scent definitely makes me not interested. I have heard many other reviewers say it smells like a dentist’s office lol

@@meepmoopmeep1 It's such a weird fragrance note-that couldn't have gone unnoticed by the people developing the fragrance, surely?!-that I truly wonder about its purpose. Baccarat is supposed to be a "transparent" fragrance and can change a lot depending on specific chemistry. I get when perfumes have notes of "musk" that smell vaguely... skunky, but plastic barbie is so far off from anything in nature that I'm at a loss. Nothing that smelled amazing in the world could make up for it in my opinion, lol

Thanks for watching and for your thoughts. Tom Ford is a great example; his brand is a behemoth, and owned by Estée Lauder. A $375 scent is largely unattainable and is likely marked up with a huge brand tax. xoxo Diana

@@SlowGaze I go by the same principle. There are brands out there like le Labo that I specifically do not want to shell out retail for the Real Deal- they're under the EL umbrella as well, with poor post-buyout reformulations.
There are even dupes I prefer to the originals, though some dupe companies are more ethically questionable than others.
I allocate my money to small independent perfume houses 😌

Ignoring the question of whether dupes are inherently bad, if I purchase a "knock-off" version of something I've wanted for a long time, it inevitably makes me want the original MORE than before as a point of comparison. As such, they are never the less expensive option.

I know from a creative standpoint duping/copying is harmful, but it's probably great for marketing. I think part of the reason originals leave dupe brands be is that they know that the customers who'll go to a dupe brand aren't necessarily the ones who would've paid full price for the original anyway. And if they do really enjoy the dupe, they're more likely to splurge on the original (which they may have never tried/heard of without the dupe).

Ooo, I love this argument. Imitation is a form of flattery, no? I think that brings my comment about price accessibility full circle. Maybe buying sample sets and tester kits from the original brands is a good way to go. I'm still stubbornly a purist on that matter, even though I'm learning more about parent companies, the conglomerates who own most of my mainstream fragrance brands *sigh* and how blind I am to this late capitalist reality! Thanks for bringing this thought up and for watching xoxo Diana

Howdy SlowGazers, have you ever been interested in buying from Dossier? Or bought a dupe knowing full well that it was a duplicate, even if you *could* afford the "real thing"? xoxo Diana

I just tried a bunch from dossier and didn't like any. I think I might dip a toe into indie fragrance.

I don’t hate dupes but I just don’t find them interesting. Re: Santal 33. Maybe something’s off with me but I don’t get the hype over that scent. It’s a good scent but it’s not one that I will purchase. For unisex scents, I prefer Etat Libre d’Orange particularly I am trash and jasmin et cigarette. Anyway, love your channel. Would like to see more of your art and travels 😊 PS The sample kits are a good way to test the products. Both Le Labo and Francis Kurkdjian offer their kits for either less or the same price as a full bottle from Dossier.

I've never head of ELd'O - thanks so much for sending me down that path. I'm a sucker for D.S.&Durga at the moment, and my husband is wearing a Byredo scent on repeat that I'm drooling over. I should be better about reading up on conglomerates and parent companies; had no idea that Le Labo was already an Estee Lauder arm. Thanks for the encouragement to share more about art and travels :-) I do feel torn sometimes! But I'll try to take your note to heart
