    Seeking the “holy grail” items makes me purchase more. I bought an eyeshadow quad online to replace an old one and the colors were not exactly what I expected, but it was good enough that I still use it regularly. And eyeshadow is my weakness! Finding a good enough product is my goal now.

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  3 года назад +1

      "Finding a good enough product is my goal now" - perfection. We don't usually start out with "goals" to only find what's good enough, especially with the caveat of being "for now". We change constantly, so what's good enough could change too! I think this is a sleeper sentence because it speaks to living in the present and not getting caught up on finding something that's made perfectly for you... when really, makeup is made for masses of people and out to make money! Not to be the most perfect thing ever. Really refreshing, thanks for your comment xoxo Diana

    I feel it’s good for the soul to have one thing in your life to indulge in. It can vary For so many people. For some it’s art or antiques or watch’s or jewellery or shoes or handbags. Anything really. Mine is defo luxury makeup. And I don’t feel guilty for it. 95% of my wardrobe from head to toe is basic high street stuff. And I’m ok with that lol. For me Using luxe makeup is a sensory experience. If I’m going to make the effort to put on makeup daily I may aswell use products that bring me joy☺️

      Sounds like you really know yourself, your tastes, and what you want to "invest" in. It's so refreshing to hear! I agree that makeup, especially for daily wearers, is a full sensory experience. Even if it's private, it's something that shows up on the most animated parts of our face, and helps amplify ourselves. It's so powerful! Thanks for your insight xoxo Diana

    I'm the opposite, I'm nervous travelling with drugstore makeup. I have had my wet n wild palette packaging broke and smear the clothes in my luggage, and my maybelline age rewind concealer cap also broken while travelling. I feel more at ease travelling with my high end makeup 😅

    For me, I'm so picky about what I like that I don't even really look at the price. Some of my items are quite inexpensive and others are in the prestige category. The few times I've dipped into luxury, it didn't wow me. When I go to Ulta, I shop on both sides of the store.

    • @SlowGaze

      Me too. The one item which high-end brands do better than most drug-store products is foundation. After trying out drug-store base products, I always find luxury formula works best. Other makeup items, eyeliners, concealer, blush, lipstick… I can do drugstore or affordable Korean options. Even skincare, most of the time I will lean toward drugstore.

  • @thatjedininja

    Once I go through my products I’m thinking about switching some to drugstore but I’m hesitant because I’m loving that I switched to clean beauty this year (mostly lux) and happy with the items I bought. Since I just turned 40, I feel like the cheaper formulation won’t work the same. I also feel like I’d be spending more money experimenting with what works for me and what doesn’t since I haven’t touched drugstore formula in so long. So in a sense I’d rather spend $200 on lux items I know I’ll like vs $200 on trial and error type situation. This was such a great video! Love your take on slow beauty.

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  3 года назад +2

      I'm also far more comfortable purchasing items that are considered luxe now that I'm 31 and can see how my face is different from when I was in my early 20's. I'm also much more literate with applying makeup, realizing I don't need that much, and there's a subtlety of finish and color that I'm after to "look luxe" as well! That all adds up to using less product and knowing what I like / what my skin likes. It was at the cost of so much trial and error... and purchasing stuff without thinking twice about how it was made, what's in it, etc. I also just calculated the MERIT foundation stick vs. Westman Atelier's and found a huge difference in price per gram. WA is fast becoming my favorite brand, period! (That and erm, that Physician's Formula Butter Bronzer hahah). Thanks for sharing! xoxo Diana

    I love your videos so much! 💞 I completely agree with you about drugstore v. expensive. There's a learning curve when getting into makeup and, counterintuitively, I feel like luxury is a good entrance into figuring out tastes, swatching freely, and understanding skin tones, textures, and flattering colors. Aside from that, it's so much easier to shop drugstore once you build a foundation of tastes based on experimenting. I forewent this process when I started getting into makeup, and I ended up getting a bajillion dupes for an expensive product I lusted after. I think focused drugstore shopping is so great. Your video is extremely refreshing; I just went through my own collection, and I recognize that I really replaced almost everything with luxury: Sonia G. brushes, Marc Jacobs mascara, Kevyn Aucoin concealer. If I (ever) need replacements, I will definitely reconsider and take a trip to the drugstore thanks to your wonderful perspective and video! 💕

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  3 года назад +1

      What a great take on all this! The learning curve is a big one for sure. And I LOVE the point you bring up where you buy a bunch of dupes "around" a star product that would've fit the bill nicely to begin with. Makeup buying is so complex and there are so many items to try on within your lifestyle, not just how it swatches on the back of your hand in a store (or not at all, with drugstore makeup!) Thank YOU for your insights and for watching. xoxo Diana

      I do the same thing :) The packaging is really important to me and my experience with a product. I enjoy the depotting process, and also the search for a cute vintage compact. I've re-used the black and gold VB/Estee Lauder highlighter compact multiple times and I just bought a vintage Clinique compact to use for a cheap blush. That said, I still really struggle with feeling satisfied with my curated collection... and battling the urge to buy more. I do a lot of buying and selling on Mercari and DePop. I feel a bit better about buying from directly from other consumers that are in the same boat as me :) This video was great and really resonated with me.

    I have a small makeup collection but it's still more than what i used to own in college. Back then, i only have 1 eyeshadow palette from Kanebo (a Japanese brand), one mascara from Lancome, one foundation from Make Up For Ever and a blush. I think social media has really changed the game for many of us. RUclips and Facebook was just getting popular back then, I don't think Michelle Phan even started her channel yet, so really, we had no reference. I did my makeup based on tutorials from Japanese magazines and close scrutiny of models and actresses who have similar features as mine. None of my friends really put that much makeup on so I never felt like I had to buy more items to match theirs. Even though my desire to own more makeup is far greater now, I am able to keep my collection relatively small by checking in with myself, my condition - double checking whether my skin tone, skin type, skin condition, face features are the same as the influencer who is feverishly promoting a holy grail product of hers/his. Looking at what I already own and realizing that I haven't even hit pan on most of them, on top of that, double checking the expiration dates. Finally, I think about how the next beautiful thing will be on the market soon and my desire to own a certain product will soon fade into distant memory.

      Thank you so much for sharing your experience! The last thing you said resonated most with me. The fact that our desires ebb and flow, and that the minute I'm done pining for a thing... I'll likely pine for something else just as fervently! This video really spoke to me, I have been going through the same thing lately, I have so much makeup (mostly high end) so I decided to sell on dpop, and It is not easy! It is hard work and its hard to please everyone, I honestly had the best intentions of just wanting to share my makeup in a reasonable way and not just chuck it, but now I'm thinking of just deactivating my dpop altogether. I'm gonna try and not buy anything else the rest of this year 🤞

      Ahh, it's so refreshing to hear that I'm not the only one who struggles with depop. It sounds like it's the end-all-be-all solution to sharing, but it's a TON of work. As a seller, you're extremely vulnerable. I've been burned before trying to accommodate people, and have also gotten into petty squabbles over $5 worth of goods. Thanks so much for sharing your insight: best of luck with the low/no buy 2021! I'm planning a no buy myself. xoxo Diana

    I like the way you think. I use some rules to buy makeup, it is good for me. It is help me to have a small collection of functional makeup, curated and looking beautiful to look at; in addition, it is a way to "have control over the makeup collection".
    My way of thinking about makeup is as follows: 1.- It must be a medium price, I feel that sometimes the cost for the product is too much. 2.- I am looking for it to have benefits for my skin (sun protection, natural ingredients, etc). 3.- That the color of the product is harmonious with my skin tone and that I can occupy it whether I am tanned or not. 4.- That the packaging is resistant. It is annoying when the packaging is damaged and the product is spoiled. 5.- I like the packaging to match my other products.

      I really love this and I hope more people read this comment! Your list reminds me of something the food writer Michael Pollan wrote. It was his "rules" around healthy eating. I think it goes, "Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much." It's so simple, but it's the guiding principles around how he wants to eat (and live!) Your rules are a great distillation of your values and seem to work well to create a beautiful system. Thanks so much for sharing xoxo Diana

    I love this video! Thank you for "forcing" me to reflect on this topic. I have found that for me personally packaging plays a huge role in my beauty purchases. I just find so much more joy in my makeup - looking at it, having it in my hands while applying it - when its packaged beautifully. And beautiful packaging is just so hard to find in the drugstore.
    However, I recently got the Salt New York palette & I depotted a setting Ppowder I got from the drugstore and put it in there - and I love it!! I love depotting in general and because it is a low priced product I wasn't too afraid to accidentally destroy it. And now I've got the beautiful packaging I so love and a reasonably priced powder that I can use up as fast as I want and buy it again whithout the financial guilt. The only thing that doesn't sit too well with me is throwing away the original plastic packaging... but I would have done that anyway if I had used it up whitout depotting, wouldn't I? I guess from now on I'm on the hunt for drugstore priced refill items only...

    I don’t often feel the need to upgrade a product until I’m nearly out of it, or if it isn’t working for me anymore. At that point, I do consider the cost difference between trying a few drugstore items that have “okay” reviews versus trying one luxury product that RUclipsr content creators with similar skin texture and tone have had work well for them. I agree that you need to have your own definition of the best though - I actually really love some of my AoA and Revolution products and would choose them over other items I own.
    It seems like there are a lot of comments on the video about makeup and products being a whole sensory experience, which I totally feel as well. I’ve curated a collection that suits me well (even if it’s larger than it “should be”) and a vanity area that both relaxes and energizes me, and the whole routine of skincare and beauty is something I really look forward to each morning.
    I have been watching beauty RUclips for over a decade and I’d like to think I’ve learned to not get too caught up in the FOMO and sponsored posts that tell me I HAVE TO HAVE THE THING. It’s more entertainment, maybe some tips and tricks, and then of course smaller channels like yours where I feel like I’m just getting ready while I listen to a friend talk. I definitely can empathize with people who start to feel pressure or influence from the content they consume though.

    • @SlowGaze

      So glad to hear your measured and empathetic thoughts on this topic - seems like you're in a good headspace with your own makeup habits, but can see from others POV's. That's so refreshing! I didn't think I'd feel so "influenced" by RUclipsrs, but the more I watched them, no matter who they were, the more they felt like a "friend" to me because I recognized their voice, got a sense of their makeup tastes, and obviously the Beauty YT space is very one-on-one intimate like they're sitting across a desk from you in real time. If a friend recommends something to me, I'm more than likely to want to purchase it! Thanks as always for watching xoxo Diana

    Did you know that Gucci Westman was creative director for Revlon for a hot minute? It was after her success with Lancome, I believe. She had developed an ocean themed line that did really well. I had been using Revlon eyeliners because they didn't irritate my eyes, and they had the perfect pearly, warmish brown shade. It was like no-eyelier eyeliner on me.
    I suppose hiring her to revamp the Colorstay line was an early attempt to save the company. She brought her teals, blues, greens, and sunset oranges and ditched most of the office colors. I was mad, but the ladies went off. Those women had been using Revlon's basic as hell makeup for years because it was so basic.
    Not only did they drop my Cocoa (I am still looking for a replacement), but a nice deep navy blue for some reason. After she quickly moved on they brought back some of the previous items back and let go of a lot of her brighter colors. Too late though.
    Now Gucci has her own brand of low-key, office-friendly makeup. It's like she took Revlon's L and made it a win for herself. I wish I could be like that.

    The thing this clean, sustainable, ethically sourced makeup just do not exist in the drug store. I value the back story of my products not just what you see in the catalog or the price. I personally do not purchase drug store makeup bc it does not align with my moral compass. However before making that switch about 10 years ago I only purchased high end makeup bc the drug store just didn’t cut it for me. They didn’t make items like Chanel les beige water fresh tint, they didn’t make blush with more muted tones; drug store gave you six shades of bright pink, coral, or peach and that’s just it my vibe. I would rather spend $48 on a westman Atelier blush in my perfect shade and a formula that is absolutely flawless than a two dollar blush that doesn’t get the job done with crappy ingredients and terrible pigment and just as bad packaging that’s usually a big chunk of plastic as if they put no thought into the concept or product at all. The thing is I’m ok with spending money on beautiful clean products I love the feel of luxury in my hand and I feel good knowing that my purchases are casting votes for better quality products from ethically sourced ingredients. I know I’m on the right side of the environment by not cheating out buying crappy plastic drug store chemicals.

    I'm all about natural beauty so I don't mind if the products aren't super pigmented, more for natural looks, etc. But I just feel like I can achieve the same looks with cheaper stuff.
    I am a student and I don't want to splurge on face powders and Mascaras when 2$ ones are really nice for me

Heavy packaging, how soft and buttery a powder is in the pan, and how well a product travels... those aren't indicative of how well it'll perform on my face! And almost all the products we see out there are travel-friendly (*side eyes ABH giant palettes*) so it's a moot point. Just my two senses here...maybe its the over way around.
    Dont search for the best, so it can be the only one. Instead the only one automatically becomes the best, since you removed any comparison from it.
    It doesnt need to be the best to deserve being your only one...we dont even have that high of expectations for out life partners. Your partner might not be the best in the world, yet you stopped searching because you were satisfied. Just settle for one that satisfies you without expecting that it will continue to satisfy you 100% of the time in the future. It wont. And thats fine. We dont have to fullfill any little need that tickles us. We need to appreciate what does the job 95% of the time.
