I loved the movie. It was about the title character, Glass and his strong beliefs. He sacrificed the many to find David and like Ellie Staple said they all broke out, it was a suicide mission. He meant all three would die to show world that superhumans existed. Elijah was no hero by any means, he was the anti-hero. And in the end he defeated a centuries old faction and let the world know.

The problem is: did Glass really destroy the secret society? All they need to do is plant stories that the videos are a hoax. Now, if they would’ve shown scenes of people around the world discovering their superpowers then that would’ve been nice because at that point people REALLY believe it.

I thought I was gonna walk away hating this movie when they killed all three..but the movie kept going and revealed Mister Glass TRULY was a Mastermind! Then the video evidence was revealed to the world..and I realized that Mister Glass creates a new telling of the history of the world that once stopped at comic books, now the truth is revealed.
This isn’t a true traditional superhero movie, but it is a movie about a world waking up to the idea that YES we have extraordinary people. YES there are people who tried to shield your eyes from realizing this. YES they have failed and fell to Mister Glass’s ultimate plan.
If they really did the whole Osaka tower idea it would have fallen into predictable by the numbers superhero tropes. Hero wins, villain gets his ultimate audience and dies in that goal and the world is awoken.
The society KNEW very well how this would’ve played it out, and made sure the event wouldn’t play out like the comics, but Mister Glass has lived his life knowing the ins and outs of comic stories, how they’ve modernized and deconstructed themselves. He has literally unlocked the key to get this out to the public eye at long last.
M Night did NOT want to do another Cinematic universe that has taken over modern cinema just to cash in on the prospect and in many ways we should appreciate that this is STAYING as a trilogy, however what he STILL did do was open the universe, the other super humans in this universe now know the time is now to show themselves and thus Mister Glass’s plan of an “origin story” literally created the origins of EVERYONE else in this world. So the universe IS opened up but more stories are only up to the audience’s imaginations.

      My problems were as follows:
-The group felt like it didn't have as much build up as it should have
      - David didn't have a moment with his son and his death was really strange (semi forgiven with ending that Joseph sees his father's legacy live on) when the rest of the character's were with the one that they loved
-Ending had a lot of random twists (I kinda liked them but may appear all over the place).
Btw, the mix of Mr. Crumb on the train and David was beautiful and so seemless.
My overall opinion: Good and fulfilling as an end to a trilogy, but not the most genious of them. Overall, this trilogy was actually pretty awesome. Action in this movie was enough/more than expected. Dunn is awesome. The fact that he dies still makes sense regardless if I found it stupid. He was portrayed as an old vigilante similar to Batman who needs to retire. He also has the burden of never telling Audrey that he was a hero so now he can find peace with her in his death. For me, the film felt it went by so fast. Handled the you're not a real hero pretty well. Most controversy will definetly come form the direction at the end.

Glass is what Unbreakable was for its time. Don't kid yourself, people... Unbreakable was very much unappreciated and underrated when it came out, and most people jump on the bandwagon AFTER learning the twist from Split. The current superhero climate is formulaic while Glass, in a way, forcing the audience to pay close attention to every little detail from each movie.
Glass has its flaws, but it seems the issues most people are having is that they were expecting the typical superhero formula with the M. Night Shyamalan twist. David was no Superman... just a random guy with superhuman capabilities. His death reflected that. Kevin was no different. We, the audience, put expectations based on the typical hero formula (David = hero = happy ending or hero's death).
The ending was basically telling the audience that these characters that you love are mere ripples in a vast ocean with the ripples being what made you take notice of the ocean in the first place now.

This whole trilogy is showing us what people can do when they believe they can but he has trauma and is scared of drowning. It is like when a power lifter is able to squat 300kg but is scared of a spider cos he has an arachnophobia and will not be able to kill the spider even tho he is very much capable of doing so by squashing it. You are just trying to act like you can outsmart this trilogy when you did not even understand half of it...

      @jonathansheppard2410 5 лет назад +11

You have to understand that David had low self-esteem and very low self-confidence, thus the reason for not believing he had any super human abilities. He represented a key trait in many humans: he didn't want to be special nor have the responsibility that comes with such power.
Believe it or not but some of us know we have special abilities and we choose not to do anything with them because we know the weight that comes with it all: we lose total sense of ourselves for the enjoyment and entertainment of others.

She gave him a very believable explanation. He knew about the Horde and some of the personalities, he saw Hedwig walking down the street with brick dust on his pants, and quickly put the evidence together. Is he some sort of telepath? Or is he just really perceptive. It's the same way Sherlock Holmes solved crimes.

    • @guaroguarino

@Ghost James St. Patrick That's exactly why she said she only had three days to convince them of being mentally ill, rather than having super powers. She never wanted to kill them but Glass' outsmarted her and they became too real to let them live.
I'd like to think that David might come back, just as Superman did, but even if he doesn't I don't think that sole reason (his demise) justifies the low scores this film is getting since it's a really great film.

All I can say is that, as a writer and as a fan of this series, I am so thankful for M Night accomplishing two things: first, for doing the story justice. He had the patience, which I would have to say is his superpower, to span this trilogy over a course of 19 years. He didn't rush it and he didn't neglect any detail in creating the perfect story to sum up where the series originally began. So thank you for that - and second, for paying homage to the fans of this series. By the time the movie ended, I felt completely satisfied as if I had just been served the best dessert to my five course meal. I couldn't have been happier. So many film franchises forget about the fans who support the films from the beginning because they only care about the idea they are trying to convey rather than making the fan a part of the actual premise, which I believe M Night has done beautifully. So all I can say is thank you for delivering on a much anticipated film and thank you for not coming up short. This is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen and one of the best trilogies ever created. Thank you.

We know in the movie Split that her dad dies from a heart attack and she goes to live with her abusive and perverted uncle (thankfully we learn in Glass that he's now in prison) but we never learn about what happened to her mom. Neither Split nor Glass tell us about her mom, whether she died or she split, we just know that she's out of the picture for whatever reason.

I think if Glass and the entire Eastrail 177 trilogy, came out on the timeline M. Night Shyamalan originally had planned back in the early 2000s, I think perhaps we as a community would be having a very different opinion and conversation. To me it seems we are and will be “Split” on the ending of this trilogy, simply because of timing. Going into this movie, we all probably had different expectations on the basis that we had gotten used to the formula of comic book movies presented by Marvel and DC alike. If this trilogy had come during an earlier time, perhaps between the years of 2000-2007, before the release Iron Man 1, imagine how that would have changed the reception to ending of this final movie. Imagine how that would change our paradigms on super hero movies in total! I for one would like to imagine how perfect of a transition that would have been, ending with the notion that superheroes do in fact exist in the real world, and then letting the comic book movies of the past 10 years unravel.

Glass - he is kinda dead anyway... The only massage you get is that if you want to possess superpowers, you need some OP ones, like Black Adam, Superboy prime, Flash etc. There is no point of being easily countered with all of that nonsense. No, it was all planned by Glass. Do you really think they all died? No. David can be revived by Casey who by the way is a healer which explains why she always fail to kill herself after multiple suicide. Kevin is not dead because his other personalities can takeover the mind before the last nerve ends and be healed by Casey. Mrs. Price is introduced for a reason with Casey by her side. We start the movie with 3 main roles. The creator(Glass), the created(Overseer) and the victim(The Horde). That is also where is ends. Mom is the creator, son is the created, and the girl is the victim. A Trilogy within a trilogy. Also notice the secret society is a 3 leaf clover(another trilogy reference) which i think represents the average normal person, with these superheros being the rare 4 leaf clovers. Glass says at the end that this was a origin story, and what do most origin stories have in common? Tragedy. Glass wants the supers to awaken, and he sends his video to 3 people. I am left to think that these are the new Trilogy, and this was all to awaken them as much as the world. After all whats more tragic then the loss of a loved one.

The thought process behind the creative direction of the three films is this, "Humans can attain great things through the power of belief." These superhumans aren't superhumans in the way we think about comic books. They are more grounded in the real world, but they are still capable of doing incredible things. The more a person believes that they are capable, the more they become capable, and the stronger they become. To put it into a loose comparison think of the X-men Character Gladiator. He is incredibly strong and powerful, but the more confidence he exhibits the stronger he becomes.

My ending takeaway was almost parallel to that of The X_Men... for decades they lived in the shadows, but found their way out, and fought for "equal rights"... when Ms. Price grabs Joseph and Casey's hands, and says something to the effect of "This is where we join the universe", it says to me that, in the "Unbreakable" world, more humans with extraordinary powers are going to see the videos, and garner the strength to come out pf the shadows.... just one mans interpretation. ~Amadeus~

all that butthurt in the comments just because the ending wasn't a cliche
The movie is great and worthy of watching, the ending was realistic. Mister Glass manipulated Dunn and Crumb so that they "helped" him (without knowing) to fulfill his true goal, which was showing the world that superhumans existed. With that accomplished all the three of them became immortalized.
The raw truth is that just because Dunn was a hero, the movie didn't owed us a "worthy hero's death"
    get real people
edit: plus I think that the movie tried to show how such incredible and amazing creatures can have such a tragic non-heroic death

Personally, I loved this filmed. It tied the other two together while staying true to its themes. The question of 'is this real' was teased just enough to get you to believe one way or another, and without it getting too cliche or over-the-top. It was all believable and that's what makes this work. It's not a Marvel or DC movie, it's how 'superheroes' would be in the real world. Everyone's powers aren't other worldly, but extraordinary enough. And Glass being the orchestrator of all. You had to think he'd known about the secret society for awhile. Given he spent his life searching for superheroes and only found two, he knew something was up. And the twists left and right at the end brought everything full circle - Kevin's father dying on the train, the secret society keeping supers at bay but with a psychiatric approach, and Glass' revelation to the world that we are more than those limits. Beautiful, if you ask me.

After reading the comments and seeing a lot of people did not understand how a "puddle" could have killed David when he's supposed to be extremely strong I thought I'd give my viewpoint on it. This is how I saw it and why it makes sense to me.
I think a lot of people are forgetting that water is David Dunn's kryptonite. He had just battled the beast in the large water container, trying to stay alive while simultaneously breaking the container so he can get out of the water. Large bodies of water or deep holes in the ground filled with water (which the puddle was- in an earlier shot you can see how deep the hole is before it fills with water so it wasn't just an inch of water in a puddle) will incapacitate him. It's like Superman being shot with a kryptonite bullet and dying because they didn't get it out in time or in BvS breathing in the kryptonite gas hindered him and weakened him immensely.
That is what happened to David, he was already weak from battling in the water with the beast and breaking the container to get out, essentially using a lot of his weakening strength to get out. Joseph even yells at the police before it's revealed they aren't there to help that his father is weak and needs help. David was extremely weak by the time those two large strong men came over and shoved his face into the deep pothole. Maybe he'll come back but this is a realistic superhero movie and the heroes stay dead. I was bummed too to see him die (Bruce is my favorite actor) too, but to me how he died made sense the need for all three's death made sense.

Another theory, is that there are really no superhumans and the psychiatrist, (the doctor) and all other members of ‘the society’ also have psychiatric disorders. They have shared psychosis and believes their duty is to hunt down these superhuman. The scene where the doctor goes to the comic shop can be treated as an “evidence” to this theory. And so, the next sequel would be the story of the doctor, or the society. But this is just me

The script did need a bit of a rewrite I thought. Great acting though from the main cast. Overall, a must see if you seen the other two movies. But yes the ending will be polarizing. The movie was brilliant. This is not a different universe. This is the real world and the real world consequences of superheroes. Many other franchises have tried this idea, but all fail except for this because this film unceremoniously kills off its heroes (Tarantino-esque) and still let's the main character of this film succeed, completing his arc. I do not think this cinematic universe will continue and that's a good thing. I am satisfied and entertained.

It just leaves you in hate for humanity, killing of things they do not understand, and makes you wonder that If I were to have superpowers, I would need to eliminate all the police/military etc services to live a peaceful life after. That is not a good aftermath, nor a moral of the story. You should not root for the serial killers more, than for the stupid humanity...
How is that a good ending?
The beast should have became human due to these kind words, leave all his other personalities and lived with that girl somewhere in the forest.
Cape crusader should have been respected by the police and got a medal for bravery..... for handling the situation...

Because it leavers with moral of the story - humans are evil, they are the treat. And hence, serial killers are presented as protagonists. So, it means two things :: 1) They were too weak. Hence, if you want to use your powers, you should be literary like Superman, being fully immortal, and being able to wipe out the entire humanity in two seconds, being able to to move planets etc. or 2) I need to kill all the police, and the army, and the any remotely resembling treat specimen. And only then I can live freely with my superpowers.

I loved Unbreakable it was a masterpiece, 10/10, and Split was excellent
8/10 and I just saw Glass and what they are saying is true. Its a rather good film
until the last 15 minutes when Staple reveals her true purpose.
Unfortunately I will mostly remember how Night shit the bed at the end
and ruined the film. If only this one subplot had been excised or if at
least they didnt kill off all three of them. I would have given this
film an 8/10 up until that point but nooooo Night had to get a little to
cute with the story. This was my worst fear realized and reminded me
of The Village. The Village was also a decent film right up until the
end twist which then completely negated all of the good storytelling
which had taken place before. I used to be a defender of Shyamalan but
after this I am done and cannot imagine seeing one of his future movies.
And Its so sad because he was so close to making this a really good
film and satisfying ending to the trilogy. Watching David Dunn being
killed by a Philly swat cop in a most casual manner was like watching
Spider-man die at the end of infinity War.

I completely disagree and thought this was a great way to end the trilogy. Mister Glass won and all three main characters died for a very meaningful cause: wake the world up to super humans as well as the secret organization killing them. Humans are evil enough to have an organization such as the one displayed if the circumstances required it, so that concept is not far fetched at all in my opinion. I also don't believe the cop that killed David Dunn was just your average John Doe cop. It's very possible that Staple had some super humans on her pay roll, ones that gave into her demands in the past that she let live, and now work for her. The movie heavily implies that there's potentially millions of super humans walking among humanity in secret, so it's also not far fetched to believe that Staple would "own" some, so to speak.

Question for M Night: Do you even test audience screen bro? This movie was great until the last 15 minutes. Let’s make a rule if you promise some epic showdown and then make a plot twist, it should not have way less impact than the showdown you promised. Smh. That sucked, hardcore. Elijah was built up as way smarter than that dumb “we’ve gone viral” ending. He should have been able to expose everything including the group and disable it. Not wait 10+ years to have an epic suicide in the front yard of the asylum he was held prisoner in. That does not sound like the actions of a smart man. And then giving your lead hero the death of a bit part action movie extra, was lame and depressing. Like really? A No face random dude killer did him in. This movie could have been so epicly awesome, but its nothing more than a lame let down now. I feel so bad for sam jack, bruce willis and james mclvoy, who really displayed some flawless acting in this movie only to have it wasted by that stinking tird of an ending.

Great "explanation"... just had to point 1 thing out ... we didn't learn that Kevin's father was on the train that Dunn survived in *this* film... we learned it in 'Split"... think back to when Dennis gave Patricia permission to be in the light, when she went to get flowers and lay at the train doors opening... that was the moment (at least for ME), that I knew Kevin's Dad had died on the same fateful crash that Dunn survived... I KNOW I wasn't the only one that caught that, right?!? ~Amadeus~

  • @justininexile3445

Me and my GF speculated on what the twists would be and we almost got them all right :D we predicted that everyone will die, we predicted that there is some shady stuff with the Staple either she is a super herself or some secret government agent (they kinda spoiled it in the trailer with the cafe scene) at first I thought that maybe she is mind controller and made others move at the same time in that trailer scene. The twist that we didn't predict was the Kevins father's death on the train. Overall I liked this kind of ending, Dunn's death was very Game of Thrones and close to reality like the death of Big Daddy in Kickass. Also from the moment Staple found the tower plans that Elijah left her, I knew they are not going there actually. Mr. Glass would never risk them knowing the real location just to gloat.

The therapist said that she was planning to go to another city to stop even more extraordinary people so why not start something new from there? I know they pretty much wrapped things up with Mr. Glass ruining the secret organizations plans by sharing the security camera viewings with the world but I still think there could be more to this. Even if this really is the end then I'm satisfied that they at least ended the movie with Mr. Glass beating the secret organization.

Okay, so only the black man wasn't truly exceptional, just "really smart". There have been a lot of people who have been "really smart", but NO ONE has been literally bullet proof and possessing the strength of ten or more large men. This is where the movie's story stumbled. In a way, Mr. Glass was little more than a token "super human". The secret society wasn't ever truly concerned with him because he was just a gifted genius, not a superhuman. Being a telepath would've been the perfect super ability for Mr. Glass, and would've given the story more cohesion.

Still, my point is he wasn't truly exceptional, or possessing any real super human capabilities, just "really smart". Did she lock him away in her asylum because she was afraid he was smarter than her? No. The whole point of any of the three being there was because they were SUPPOSED to have truly superhuman abilities, and she was tasked with getting them to believe that they didn't. Mr. Glass was a convicted, "really smart", mass murderer. He should have been in a super max prison awaiting execution, not locked away in an asylum for people with above human abilities. The story just doesn't click when it comes to Mr. Glass because SOMEONE didn't want to do the most logical thing and give him a true super human ability.

@@jackrogers5712 I see your point, truly I do. But my point is in the concept of attempting to realize superhumans in the most realistic of lights, to just make one of them "really smart" is subpar story telling. In reality there are people with IQ's meeting or exceeding 180 points or more (i.e. above genius level). We can see this, measure this, document it. In other words, it is REAL. I challenge you to show me someone who has been documented to possess the strength of ten or more men, show imperviousness to metal projectiles fired at super sonic speeds (bullets). You won't find anyone who meets this criteria. Even Mr. Glass's medical condition is a real medical condition. Why try so hard to keep Mr. Glass locked in the realm of realism, while the other two characters were given free reign in the realm of the UNreal? Just doesn't make sense on a story telling front, when making him a telepath of some kind was such a no-brainer.

      - humanity is evil, and we need to exterminate that. Like the Beast deserved becoming regular human, and being able to live happily with that girl.... Cape crusader should have been respected as a police man etc... And go to the psychiatrist, treat your goddamn water phobia and become really immortal......
Also, if you were to have super powers, two options - be OP with powers of Superman but no weaknesses.... Or kill all the military, and the army, and the police. Or any one related. Just to live life without the fear of humanity ever after....
That is why the ending is stupid. Too realistic, making you think that they were too easy to break.... So much “kryptonite” plot convenience, where they have each their own weaknesses that an average human can kill them.....
Or that you root for the serial killers more than you root for the humanity....
