Now THIS is a quality STALKER video!
Like many people, I've always wanted to keep playing the trilogy over and over, but man, Call of Chernobyl-Anomaly-GAMMA spoiled me with its nicer graphics and quality of life improvements. I've always wanted to delve deep into the hundreds of refresher mods for the trilogy, but so far, the ratio of bad to good hasnt been very encouraging
So all the more power to you for making this list! I can really tell you put in the man hours to discover what mods would work for both a newbie trying to jump into the trilogy, and a veteran Stalker trying to re-ignite that love for an old classic
Thanks so much for this video, man. Will definitely share and recommend it to other people as well!

I've been looking all over the internet, asking *many* people for a mod that JUST improves the gameplay. Doesn't add any new missions, doesn't extend any already existing missions. I *just* wish to play the base game with better gameplay and they just couldn't take the hint and keep throwing mods that do exactly what I said I *don't* want.

There actually is a mod that allows you to play OGSR with the CoP weapon models/animations called, well, "OGSR CoP Weapons". Don't let the ratings concern you. There was a point during the raid on CNPP which caused the game to crash at a certain point. I was quick to inform the mod maker, Bashy (who's also making the mod Back to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.), that there was a problem and they immediately patched it out. And so I was able to complete the rest of the game without a problem. So yeah, would highly recommend it.

I have to say, thank you for making these videos. Because of you I decided to go through the original trilogy before playing Anomaly and as a result I've found both to be a more enjoyable experience overall than they would have been had I not seen this. I actually failed to install Clear Sky ABR correctly without knowing it and I experienced firsthand just how frustrating the weapons are and I don't really think I would have been able to endure it all the way through without ABR. And I know for a *fact* I wouldn't have been able to enjoy Anomaly nearly as much. Right now I'm only playing on Easy difficulty and Tourist progression and it still felt like a brick fucking wall compared to the other games. And if I hadn't played any of the original Stalker games I know I never would have been able to get into it and enjoy Anomaly as much as I do right now. So thank you.

8:45 Clear sky is honestly so underrated. It wasn't even my first STALKER game, but man it's still my favourite. If you just look past those bugs and "special" treatment this game is getting from the community, you'd discover Zona with an AMAZING autumn vibes and npcs that truly felt alive. SoC npcs already were well made and CS takes it on the next level. I honestly believe AI was at it's peak in CS. CoP made a lot of things better, but not npcs, man, not npcs - in CoP all of them are just following the pattern with one main npc and two lackeys that always refuse to talk, yet in CS you could chat with every single one of them, you could ask them to tell you a story, suddenly they would ask you to assist with a raid, and after that you all would sit down around a bonfire and listen to the stories.

Pripyat is objectively a better game mechanically/gameplay wise but I too loved Clear Sky. The introduction of the faction war and upgrading suits/weapons along with the Swamps (one of my favorite areas even though everyone seems to hate it) made it be the most fun for me.

ZRP for SoC has never failed me. SRP, however, didn't have the fixes for the faction war end of CS at the time I played, but I think that's now fixed, great for a new first playthrough when I get the drive to set things up. There is a PRP for CoP floating around, got mine from the GOG discussions, but I think the game by itself is alright.

This is a great video, I've been thinking about making a similar video for a long time. Resources to demystify the stalker modding scene are so good for getting these games in people's hands.
Important note, you may want to pin this or make some kind of addendum: Memories of the Zone has a bug where you cannot complete the game on the "true ending" path, unless there has been a fix since I last checked. Spoiler Below
When jumping through portals at CNPP the game will reliably crash, one of the moddb community members found a fix for the specific crash everyone has, but then the game would reliably crash at a later point. So if you're fine with not being able to actually experience one of the endings of the game MotZ is a great mod, but I think there needs to be that asterisk

Tip: For most games you can trick steam into logging hours by my making a batch file that launches the modded game. Simply type the .exe path in quotations and save as a batch file. Use a batch to exe converter to create an executable and rename it to the name of the game's original exe. Place it in your steam folder and voila!

I really really wouldn't recommend ABR for a first playthrough, it adds strange little things that add up to an almost cursed feeling mod. For a start the difficulty has been completely changed, enemies will literally start shooting you through the side of a hill long before they should even know you exist. It's not realistic, it's not hard; it's just really stupid and annoying. You'll also get nade spammed which is always fun. They get rid of stashes, it's all reworked. Mobs of mutant wildlife which makes no sense just swarm you, it just all feels so corny and weird. I'm not saying it's terrible but it really isn't a vanilla + experience, it takes some creative liberties that render it feeling like what a 14 year old Russian kid thinks stalker should be like. It's fine for clear sky because the combat really is awful but COP it honestly feels like a janky step back.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like literally nothing in the Stalker modding-sphere can really beat Gunslinger/True Stalker so far when it comes to general gameplay feel. To me, bad weapon animations are extremely immersion-breaking, and while ABR/OWR is a nice improvement compared to stock animation, it's just still way too outdated compared to Gunslinger.
And it's not just the weapon animations either - I'm not really sure what Strifer & co. did here, but the movement system alone feels way nicer in Gunslinger than it does in vanilla Stalker, ABR and Anomaly/Gamma/etc. To explain it better...in vanilla Stalker, its movement makes you either feel like a superhero, or an protagonist of an arcade shooter (aka the classic Doom) - very immersion breaking for what's supposed to be a survival shooter with horror elements, and it also allows you to just movement sweat your way through the entire game.
You still can do this in Gunslinger to a degree though, but movement here actually has weight/heft compared to vanilla, and with some modified values it's possible to make movement actually feel somewhat realistic.
That's basically it and anyways. Tarkov and other tactical shooters have spoiled me for life here, so please don't mind my opinion too much lol

Raw gunslinger is higher quality in many ways, but also still brutally unrefined in others. The recoil is juttery and case ejection animations cull mid-air which looks worse than the 2-d sprite of the original style guns. Ultimately, the issue I have with gunslinger vs ABR is that it looks better than it feels. It does not feel good to shoot with gunslinger, sure it looks great on video, but it feels like I'm looking through a camera into the world, not the eyes of my character. I haven't played Tarkov, but I'll point out that my favorite guns in any game (in the history of ever) are those in Insurgency Sandstorm, they feel *SO* correct.

      @Kazz7420 7 месяцев назад

@@cantgamerightIt's interesting really to see you having so many issues with Gunslinger, for me it's kinda the opposite here. Recoil works fine for me and there's no animation culling even at the maximum FOV possible (100). And outside of the (really rare) random crashes from time to time, I've never had any of the issues you've listed in your videos either.
Have you been using an outdated Gunslinger build by any chance? I'm on the latest 16.09.2022 build, but even the older 12.06.2021 build were pretty smooth sailing for me.

    • @Kazz7420
      @Kazz7420 7 месяцев назад

Nevermind about that animation culling thing, just did some testing and it's indeed there as you said - but you really need to spray full-auto, with ADS on an assault rifle/SMG to actually see that. Single-fire however is fine, no culling issues.

@@Kazz7420 Oh maybe I made it sound like I have abundant grievances with gunslinger and find it unplayable but that's not fair from me. I find gunslinger perfectly playable despite preferring other systems for weapons, it's just that little thing, I prefer the others It's just that no matter how much I try, Gunslinger doesn't feel as natural or comfortable to me, but that doesn't mean I dislike and hate it.

Vanilla Plus modded playthrough's are best when you're either short on time or it's your first couple of playthrough's IMO, but that opinion aside and they're overall a very excellent modding direction to choose. That being said, choosing a vanilla plus modding experience doesn't inherently make said users superior to those who wish to go for a different modding direction to deepen mechanical depth. Nor are alternative choice's somehow not respectful to the core tone and theme of the series, it is merely YOU'RE personal preference to not include them in your modlist but they are very justifiably so compatible with the atmosphere of the games and people choosing to use them aren't somehow "not appreciative of the chocolate" of Stalker.
Don't be a snobby elitist, you're gatekeeping the totally wrong crowd of people.
The type's who aren't respectful of Stalkers tone are the one's who want to turn the game into CoD with full-auto gunfights everywhere, the scarcity of ammunition and supplies is a huge element to the tone of Stalker. Many of those "Tarkov" mods or system's merely enhance the grittiness of Stalker very naturally. Having optional deeper maintenance and customisation systems for those with a passion for firearm's (a big part of a FPS !!) is good. Having deeper medical systems for those who appreciate the authenticity that brings aren't "tainting the tone of Stalker".

I previously have loved the theme of STALKER, but it looked too dated for me to get into. As much as I loved Fallout 3 and NV back in the day (NV top 5 of all time imo) I can't even go back to that anymore.
With your mod suggestions I have decided to dive into SoC and I have to say THANK YOU. If it wasn't for you I never would have given it the chance. I'm using the XpressTuning Remaster (because i'm a steam slave unfortunately lol) with the OWR and sfx replacement. The MW gun sfx and Tarkov footsteps are an absolute godsend for immersion. I was wondering though, is there a similar sfx replacement for the other 2 stalker games? Or are the animations/sfx upgraded enough in the sequels where it isn't necessary?

I remember I played it when it was in beta but the balance was off (enemies having aimbot sniping u across the map, couldn't play without having to quicksave every few seconds after every lucky potshot in a gunfight), then a bit later they fixed it and I played it for a good while. Did lab x-18 and went to darkscape, met borov and did that island anomaly thing quest with the old man in the forest and the dark stalker quest line. But I gotta say not one crash or graphical bugs occurred. It ran perfectly. But then again, that was around 2 years ago I think... I can't believe how you didn't give the enough attention to the "OGSR Gunslinger Addon" for Shadow of Chernobyl. It definitely has much better visuals and gunplay than Radiophobia 3, and it doesn't touch the main storyline and mechanics as much as R3, and it just has additional side missions that came with OGSE mod. Radiophobia is also a good mod, but it is like a total conversion mod. On the other hand, OGSR GA is like a remastered version of Shadow of Chernobyl @cantgameright

I would not recommend Gunslinger for a first time playthrough.
The reason it's not very faithful to the original weapons list is partially because it's missing half the original weapons due to being unfinished. No F2000, no PKM, no SPAS. Zulu's PKM is just an AK with 'some' PKM stats. Burers and Controllers are also ridiculous in gunslinger, to the point that there were sub-mods made to nerf them.
I also don't recommend ABR CS...
Considering you seem to want people to have relatively faithful playthroughs, ABR CS doesn't fit. ABR CS removes stashes entirely (a traditional aspect of stalker), removes needing to find usb's, and gives you infinite carry weight. It also changes the weapon pool a ton, which you critique Gunslinger for.

all 3 STALKER games looks and feel outdated BUT that's gives the STALKER its magic when you play it for the first time.
I'd say the outdated problem is chill with me but the problem I find constantly when playing this game is the clunky-ness of the engine that may or may not ruined the whole play just because of a 300 years old engine.
Just some optimization mod like MotZ, Xpress Tuning's Remaster Ultimate Edition, and both ABR do that magic

You really don't need bandages for long though, as you should be able to get a "mama's beads" artifact that stops bleeding, obviously coupled with an anti-rad artifact. That's how I play, anyway, and then any bandages you find you can sell or keep for endgame where you might be running a suit with few artifact slots. I ended up with exactly that coupling, mama's beads and an anti-rad.
