Late Night With the Devil was the film that got my wife and me back in the theater for the first time in years. Great film. It left us thinking well after the end credits. Gus was my favorite character too. Nice review.
Fun fact: the effigy that the men "pray to," at Bohemian Grove, is an actual carved wooden owl. This makes for a very interesting show title, in the movie.
Something I really loved about the ending is that Jack probably thought the death of his wife was his end of the bargain, but the true bargain was exposing the whole country to Abraxas' influence through the broadcast of the show.
I wish they would have kept the cameras still in the 'tv studio' style towards the end but other than that an easy favorite of the past couple of years.
True (even though I didn't notice this at all. 😅). I'm still just impressed with the behind the scenes where everyone on set was into the scene and stayed in the scene even when they called scene in the scene... since that was just part of the scene. 😂
I have to say (and MAJOR spoilers for this movie, past the third act) ...when I watched this, I made the wrong assumption, that the skeptic Carmichael Haig, was the actual Devil. He has a curly moustache, a red coat, and of course, he performs a horrifying kind of hypnosis - and, most critically, he seems very insistent that magic isn't real and the demon possession is fake. And it's a common refrain that "the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist". Lastly, remember earlier when Jack asks who the demon in Lilly is, and if he's Abraxas, "Mr Wriggles isn't Abraxas, he's a lesser demon", so I thought this was a clear sign that he's only a lesser demon, not "the devil", and Haig was the real devil, trying to stop Mr Wriggles from exposing him.
@KelniusTV my assumption (and the way this video almost went) was that it was all a set up by Johnny Carson. So he wouldn't have to deal with number 2 anymore. And I mean everything would have been a set up, all the guest are in on it, all the sponsors, all of the crew. Only Jack and some of the audience wouldn't have been. Then through hypnosis, and prerecorded bits they drive him completely insane... But of course that was going to be really hard to make go anywhere. 😂
David Dastmalchian sold this for me. I mean, everyone in this was great, but he really showcased his skills as an actor playing Delroy. It genuinely felt like I was watching an old late night show with various guests and a dark mystery lurking just underneath or behind it at all times. It was very tense and my favorite of the year. Longlegs would be my runner-up (pun intended🙂).
I had not heard of this movie till your video came out. I immediately paused the video and went and watched the movie, then came back and watched your video. I personally found the movie to be a "breath of fresh air" in a genre that has seemed pretty stale to me of late. It's hard to place, but there is something about the movie that reminds almost of some ARG / analog youtube horror projects I've seen.
It really was a fantastic experience in the theater. You could hear a literal pin drop during the hypnosis scene. Even after the credits rolled most of the audience was still in their seats and talking about the movie.
The hypnosis scene was amazing except for the fact that going by the movie's premise, we shouldn't have been able to see what the hypnotized people saw. The camera was supposed to show reality, but somehow the same cameras recorded both reality and the fiction of the hypnosis. Big plot hole. But the movie was so good it took me 2 days to even think of that.
The whole hypnosis element really had a 60s-70s kind of cultural vibe to me, even more than the cut of the clothes and the color schemes. It's one of those things that used to be a thing, but just isn't any more.
@@donnamurphy8551 I thought "Longlegs" was _visually_ impressive, really good, and fun to watch for that aspect. Story, dialogue, characters, plot mechanics, everything else -- well, not so much ;)
I've been wanting to talk about this one, but also worried about a video getting copyright claimed to the point no one would ever see it. Luckily though all has been good and clear for the video. Hopefully it stays that way.
as a fan of found footage and horror mockumentaries, I enjoyed this. I have mixed feelings about the ending. I would’ve liked it to either end where it could have, with Leo pulling Jack out of the studio, or take a shorter route to the final scene.
I was spellbound watching this for the first time a couple of months ago. The first watch had this delicious offbeat dejavu feeling with all the drops and the second was all me doing the Leo snap and point. I'm a massive fan of horror novels and movies from the 50s to the 80s and this was a treat of nostalgia, especially with the practical effects. ❤️ Abraxis is also so different in terms of definition of what it wants and what it even is compared to traditional demons. The story is so beautifully written with a metric ton of rabbitholes that were tun to run down. Thanks for a fantastic review again friend! I feel very blessed I found your channel. ❤❤❤
Found your channel by accident a few months ago and I have been hooked ever since. The way you explain these movies and go into detail is 👏 you take it a step further in your reviews and I love it. Your hard work is recognized and appreciated 🫶
Yes 🔥🔥🔥 Great review. Glad you went all in on the little touches. I will admit I even love the dodgy electricity effects. Everything about this smells 70s and it's glorious. The insanity at the end when her head splits I just remember smiling from ear to ear because everything just fit perfectly for me, and made me nostalgic for 70s horror. The film was such a glorious surprise for me. Wonderful stuff.
That could be why I enjoyed it more now as I've been watching quite a bit of 70's horror lately. But one thing I do know is this was not my original plan for the video. Ended up a lot my than I expected for the recap part, but I think it works much better and fits the rest of the channel. Now I've got to re-watch longlegs for a 3rd time, since it has even more stuff going on in the background. So many details!
@PolterGibbst well, there's something in that. Some times allowing for organic change makes it even better. Was a fantastic view. Cannot wait for long legs and forgot to say your silent hill video is my favourite so far. So happy you enjoyed that film.
@@aboyandhisdogRE it's always funny to me how many people like the Silent Hill video. But that's why I also did Sinister in the same way, and came up with a list of more to do like it. This week was Late Night, next week is another Twilight Zone, and the week after is Sinister. That's the plan anyway.
@PolterGibbst twilight zone 🔥 you are feeding us well good sir. I am glad I found your channel. hopefully your hard work pays off. And your channel is recognised for the awesome thing it is. Cos you definitely deserve it 🔥
@aboyandhisdogRE honestly I say it already has paid off. I have one more big job of electrical this week and I'm cutting back on what jobs I'll be taking on. Finally switch my part time and full-time jobs around.
I noticed that you've got a few different styles of videos on your channel, but I think you've found your niche with these. Continue in this style, and it won't be long until you have a million subs.
This here is by far the easiest form of video for me to make, so I'll definitely make more. Just as long as I don't run into a bunch of copyright issues that is. 😅
@PolterGibbst What sets you apart from the rest is the way you go about telling the story of the movie and how the characters are feeling in the moment along with all the other little things you throw in to give the story more life. There's a million recap channels and they're for the most part relatively all the same. What sets you apart is your love for the subject your discussing and all the little asides and introspection your giving. Like I said your channel is gonna explode. Just don't burn yourself out because that can start to show through. And try to stay humble when you're a big YT star. Lol
@@danielvandusen5724 Thank you. I found its a lot easier talking about films I actually enjoy instead of what's popular, new, or hated. (Alone in the Dark is still the hardest video I've made. It's literally 2 videos crammed into one to attempt to give it that life.) I get why some creators get burned out, but this is way easier than running an electrical business. 😂 10 years of manual labor is nothing compared to talking about movies I like.
It could have used another editing pass, but it was a great premise for a truly deep film... Though, frankly, I feel like you could edit the first 10-20 minutes of it into a short film that's better than the whole movie (and better than the original short film the movie is based on lol), without really losing any of it's deep points about the virus-like nature of trauma.
Like I said I really like Psychological horror, and smile just hit that spot for me. You're not alone though, I've talked with quite a few people that do consider it just okay. Everyone's got their own taste, and horror seems to be the most subject of movie genres.
Saw this when it first.hit streaming and loved it. Initially, my only "complaint" was the ending as we were in Jack's mind. They couldnt possibly have "recovered" footage of jack's perspective. Id really love to see what the at home audience saw while jack was in his delusion.
If I could get away with making the video I would for sure. But I'm sure just uploading the majority of the film would get it copyright claimed so hard no one would ever see it anyway.
What took me out of it the most was the higher resolution and post-processed video artifacts. If you are trying to produce something from that specific era, by definition you need to use that era's technology and master it in true NTSC. Hell, so many of their effects would look better using that limited format and it's stronger color smear and level compression. So for anyone who watched late night television before the early 2000s this never feels immersive.
Watching a movie from the 70's you can tell right away. But from what I read their plan was to use cameras from that time period. But with effects and that they wanted to constantly record while on set they went with digital. Makes me wonder how different it would have performed. I know a lot of people would have loved it, but I also feel a like a lot of people would have been put off by it looking "old".
I have thought on this comment since I saw it 3 days ago. Been super confused since I'm from Arkansas, but I grabbed my Purdue hoodie again and it hit me. 😂 I also didn't go to Purdue, I went to Goodwill. Best friend lives up there though, nice place when we've been to visit.
The AI controversy is entirely valid and should not be discounted. AI generated labor is a poison that will spread if allowed to in the arts industry especially. 1 or 2 frames become 5, becomes a whole intro, becomes the advertising and trailers. Then before you know it large studios assure their audiences that the algorithm has made the perfect Hollywood movie, and profits have never been higher after they fired literally everyone except the asshole punching in prompts.
The one movie that i would recommend is Strange Darling. Don't know if you have already seen it, but pretty much flew under the radar for the vast majority of people. It's definitely more thriller than horror, but is very much inspired by Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I can't say more than that, because it is better to go in blind.
There is so much to say about Longlegs and the way it did things. Yes it had a much weaker last third but the first third of the film is masterfully done and is so creative and fresh, especially the introduction where "Longlegs" is first introduced. So yeah hope you talk about it soon!
I just rewatched it and picked up on way more stuff this go around. Honestly it was only okay for me on the first watch, but I couldn't figure out why. Like everything was so well done but it didn't connect the way I wanted it to. Think I figured out why though, which will all end up in the video.
You can tell right away with the title of the movie and the beginning line "What did you have to SACRIFICE to get here tonight" already sets the tone what with the whole wife thing and the devil...and worse of all late night television. Well, add this one to the list. We gotta respect our boy Abraxas after all.
I know movies are bigger roles than television, but honestly, I wish David Dastmalchian got more fanfare for his nearly perfect portrayal of Murdoc on the MacGyver reboot. He was excellent in this, too, and I hope it gets him bigger and better roles.
Saw this movie twice, enjoyed it much more the 2nd time around. My only issue was the break in premise at the end from "behind the scenes" and "documentary" to a more traditional fictional narrative format. But also enjoyed a couple of the movies you cited at the beginning (only watching because of your recommends) and gonna try to watch Caddo Lake soon! Keep up the good work, really enjoying your videos.
Apparently I missed a lot of good horror films this year. I tend to kind of get caught up at the end of the year. lol Ok, so far Heretic, Substance, and Longlegs are on the list. lmfao He also mentioned Oddity and Caddo Lake, neither of which really seem like my kind of thing, but if people make a strong case for it, I'll give it a try. lol
@bronsoncarder2491 it has been an amazing year for horror. I saw the TV glow, in a violent nature, night bitch, terrified 3 smile 2, the first omen, I could go on, but yeah, hardly time to see them all.
Please do a video on You'll Never Find Me. It's one of the best horror movies of the year for me (along with Late Night With The Devil, Oddity, Longlegs, The Substance, Violett, Heretic, and In A Violent Nature) but seems to be flying under everyone's radar. If you love psychological horror, there's a good chance you'll get a kick out of it.
I keep passing it when looking through my saved list on Shudder, probably because I haven't heard anyone mention it. Guess I'll have to stop passing it up and finally watch it now.
I don’t mind electricity in movies, especially when it’s a supernatural entity, because it can be the entity or power of it, that is being seen, not the electricity. Even though it’s supposed to be tapping into it, one can forgive it, once a young girl’s head cracks open. 😆 *I agree on seeing it in a theater. I was about to drive over 50 miles away, when I called and they said it was a mistake on the website. They’d already stopped showing it. The VVitch and Lighthouse were far more powerful in the theater. One I saw on a normal screen first, The Lighthouse, and the VVitch I saw in theaters. The striking natural lighting, and imagery, all leading up to a simple levitation at the end, just felt so much more epic in a theater. I did giggle at the end of Hereditary, watching him float up to the treehouse, thinking “oh my god. All those old people are up there, aren’t they?” 😝 That’s one hell of a tree fort.
Love these types of videos! You & MistaGG are my faves at this style of review! Any chance you do one for Smile 2? Just finally seen it and it’s def a top 5 for me this year!
Well thanks. I will have to make a video on Smile first and then later on cover Smile 2. I've just been happy with all the psychological horror movie coming out lately.
@poltergibbst fair enough! I just binged most of your stuff (the thing vid probably my favorite) and didn’t realize you hadn’t done Smile yet! Def a great year for horror as a whole, we had the creature feature, slashers, anthology & psychological 😩🥹 Speaking of anthology, Last question, do you plan on covering the vhs series? Please say yes
@@MrPrettyflvcko I'll have to watch more of them to know if I'll do the whole series, but there are a couple I would like to talk about. The Empty Wake and Storm Drain from '94 are my favorites so far.
In regards to your comment about AI, no you won’t find someone to do it for free. I have written several books and when I first started as poor retail worker writing in my free time, I had that same mindset of “oh I bet I can find a talented person online who will do this for free just to get their name out there.” I was so wrong. Everyone, EVERYONE, expects you to pay them thousands of dollars or given them a chunk of the profits. I even tried to network with a local art school in town thinking college kids with zero professional experience would love the opportunity to add something like this to a resume. Nope they too demanded minimum $1000, usually closer to $3-5k for a book cover. So I can 100% understand an independent studio on a limited budget wanting to do AI for something so minuscule where a real artist would A) take forever and possible go through several iterations before it was accepted and B) charge a ridiculous fee for something that barely makes it into the movie. AI is cheap and it instantly gives you an image. I can’t blame anyone for using it, and have come to love it for my own covers.
2:20 I just noticed that on the cover of Hollywood Observer, it says the UBC movie of the week is Hail Abraxas. I could watch this movie a hundred times and still find things I missed.
Good catch! So many things in here to make me appreciate it a little more. And after watch Longlegs again, it's the same way too. So many details in each.
Sweet! Ive been waiting patiently for your next video. Your The Thing episode is the greatest. I grew up with these late night shows and i thought Late Night With the Devil was spot on. It was fun, but i felt like the ending was missing something.
Your videos are awesome...when i was young i was really into horrors and i forgot how much i liked them....Oldie but a goodie also a Stephen King is Rose Red. I would love to here what you think of it.
Rose Red is definitely on my list. One of the first King films I remember watching over and over. I plan to so a whole series of King movies and stories in an attempt to explain how they all are connected with the Dark Tower. Think The Dead Zone will be the next King movie, either that or Misery.
Gotta admit that I'm surprised that Smile 2 is mentioned in the same conversation as this or Longlegs. Felt like it took most of the good things of the first movie and just kinda threw 'em out the window in favor of 'oh no it's happening AgAiN~~'
Great video! Curious as to what you think the reason the demon didn't respond to the cross when Gus tried to use it against it is? The one thing that kind of brought me out of the movie. My only thoughts would be (now i havent seen the movie in a while so if im missing/forgetting anything forgive me) 1. He didn't truly believe it would work or 2. It was for the movies themes. or 3. What had begun was too late to stop (but, theologically, that raises more questions or discrepancies for me lol) Also, you should check out Arcadian (2024) if you havent seen it yet. Another Cage film from this year, i would class it as horror but it leans more into the apocalyptic action genre. I think you'd find the creature design and the implied lore quite interesting. I just need more people to know about it lol
Really really enjoyed it and I think it’s definitely one of the best of the year, with a debate to be the best. So idk so much good stuff this year, a lot of it will come down to personal preference
I was drunk and cooking chili on a quiet Saturday for my family when my husband put this movie on. I was super drunk but was so drawn into the movie I remembered it lol that’s how good it is
Can anyone explain how the unreal happenings during the hypnosis were recorded? That's the only plot hole I see. The camera shows reality, BUT IT DIDN'T. Not until they ran back the footage, but everything is supposed to be found footage.
The implications is that we too were a part of the subjective audience. That's why he wanted to get the close up shot on the watch, everything to set it up was to be seen up close. Then during the reveal we already know what happens so we can't just be hypnotized again. What I think bothered me more was how the cameras still move at the end when it's supposed to be just him on set. Had someone point it out to me and now I will think of it everytime. 😂
@PolterGibbst I know that for the sake of the film it really had to be done that way, but the fact remains that the hallucinations the hypnotized people saw should not have showed up on film because it breaks the rules the film has set up. The writers should have thought that through a bit better. I do like the film and thought it was very entertaining. But nothing is perfect, and they contradicted themselves. The bit at the end where the cameras are moving could be explained as the demon causing them to move. And the fact that we are seeing what he sees doesn't break the rules of "the camera films the truth" because I think you are meant to wonder "is the demon making this into reality? Is that what's happening here? Can a demon change reality?"
My favorite horror movie is probably The Fourth Kind. Would be cool to see a video on it. This video was great. Late Night With The Devil was really good, and now I kinda feel like I didn't pay enough attention to it. Might have to go watch it through again. lol
I'd say it's worth the rewatch just off the little details. A lot of details. I'll have to check to see if I've even seen the forth kind. Either I haven't or it's been so long that I can't remember it at all. But I absolutely want to go back and cover all of my favorites. From The Wicker Man all the way to When Evil Lurks.
@@PolterGibbst Dude, if you haven't seen it, you're in for a treat. It's like a fake documentary, with Milla Jovovich playing the actor that plays the dramatized version of the "real" person... It's SO good. I've never seen Wicker Man or When Evil Lurks. Will add those to the list. lol
@@bronsoncarder2491 I've definitely heard of it but still unsure if I've actually seen it. On my list though. Be sure to watch the original Wicker Man though, 1973. They remade it with Nic Cage, and for as much as I love Cage that movie is nothing compared to the original. When Evil Lurks came out last year, definitely might want to check some trigger warnings first... it is very extreme. Other of my favorites if you need some recommendations are: -The Invisible Man (2020) -Poltergeist (1982) -The Stuff (1985) -Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) -Parasite (2019) -Misery (1990) -Possum (2018)
@@PolterGibbst I wondered if the new Invisible Man was any good. I liked the Kevin Bacon one despite all the... y'know, Kevin Bacon. lmfao Parasite is one I've been meaning to get around to for a while now. The horror community went NUTS when that film came out. lol
I haven't seen this movie, yet. But my favorite part of the narrative is that, for as much as Gnosticism shows up in film, this one actually handles the Abraxas as the literal demon that he is.
I was very close to looking into all of the Abraxas stuff before recording, but figured then this video would have been an hour long and take me a few more weeks to finish. 😅
@@PolterGibbst True. I would be so here for it, though. Gnostic theology is WILD. The idea that the spiritual world is the "true" reality and that Truth (female) essentially committed adultery with Wisdom (female) behind the back of Abraxas (the "true god") and created the Demiurge (the "tyrannical" God of the OT 🙄), who then, jealous because he wasn't being worshipped, created the Universe and Humanity, is a convoluted mess of utter misinterpretation of biblical scripture. But it's worth looking into because the ideas are Everywhere in both the Secular world and American church institutions.
@@akilahcopeland559 does sound wild for sure. The only stuff I really know about with Gnostism is from the gnostic gospels. Wild stuff in there that makes me laugh everytime. The cross walking out of the Tomb and proclaiming Jesus to be the risen messiah, is just so confusing and hilarious. Makes me wonder what they were on when writing it down. I'll have to look into for sure, all up for some Bible and Bible adjacent studies. Even if it's super weird stuff like this that isn't biblical in itself.
@@PolterGibbst Brother Spencer Smith covers a brief history of Gnosticism, and it's infiltration into Western church theology, in his Third Adam series. Which I believe everyone (particularly Christians) should watch, regardless of if their interest is in how to spot Gnosticism, New Age, New Thought, or just subtly false gospel teachings, cause "the devil is in the details."
I loved this film so much, and it brought me back to the 70s and 80s when life was so much simpler. Also, I feel sorry for anyone who didn't like LONGLEGS. Cheers.
I agree. I thought it was the best horror movie I saw all year. The Substance was also pretty good, but I didn't like it as much. Longlegs wasn't a horror movie, it was just a very good marketing campaign.
If anyone wants to learn more about The Grove, The Lore Lodge has a really great video on it! Its a bit long, but it covers a lot and is really interesting! I don't know that knowing about it will make its mention in this movie better for anyone watching, but its still cool that it was featured here!
I loved everything about Late Night with the Devil, EXCEPT the AI. I mean it was such a spit in the face of their movie that they did everything SO WELL, only to cheat themselves by using AI for a single screen. This was such a creative and cool movie and I agree with what you said about artists who would’ve loved to make an illustration for the movie. For a while on twitter, there were artists remaking/redrawing the AI still from the film and they all looked MILES better.
The AI controversy was so forced. It was three transition cards. Not the script, not the special effects, it was three 5 second cards. People really rated it lower on letterboxd and i cant wrap my head around it since it was so unimportant to the whole film. “Oh but it means it’s the start of AI being used in film”. When it is being used for something like title cards, i couldnt care less, as long as it isnt writing dialogue or the plot or being used for something actually important, why should anyone care?
I agree! And I feel like the use of AI could’ve been a creative use to make the transition cards off putting and void of life. I have heard from a lot of artists that AI art is noticeably lifeless in most if not all cases. Now that being said I’m not so sure non artists(me) would pick up on that. I am hoping that’s the case but either way it was not important to the success of the movie nor should it be rated alongside the movie as a whole
I left out the part where I was confused about people saying they wouldn't watch the movie because of it. But hey, people are insane and this is the internet where everything is fake and people are looking for attention. Think the real reason my opinion has been swayed is because I now have friends who are digital artist and make stuff for people online. And there has been a lot of headache for them since AI has gotten more popular, then to find it in a film is like a cherry on top. Still enjoyed this film though and I'm glad I saw it... even if I missed it in theaters.
If it's so unimportant, the producers could just as easily have chosen to not use AI, right? That they didn't was a specific choice. Why care? Personally, I agree ;) Why should I care about a product that the makers didn't care about either?
It was something different for once. Enough said...it's not that the other movies were bad or tried nothing new - it's just there was such an effort put into setting up the universe in a way that showed a director in love with his concept.
I have a place on the discord of all the movies I watch and my thoughts. And I have been slowly moving updating my Letterboxd account to have all of those movies with a score as well.
I've watched both Late Night with the Devil and Smile 2. Late Night with the Devil was more scarier, because the movie felt more like an actual late show gone wrong, rather than a series of hallucinations caused by a smile demon.
Hey man just wanna let you know that I'm a fan of what you do ,please keep it up, your interpretations of movies and scenes are so f××king good , your passion comes across friend , would love to have a pint with you and shoot the sh×t, btw I'm a plumber pipefitter , and I always get annoyed when plumbing is done incorrectly in movies or games lol
Longlegs is the movie of the year, imo. Nicolas Cage deserves an Oscar nomination, at least for his portrayal, and so does the young woman who played the detective Mica( not sure of her last name or the spelling of her first, I apologize)
I watched it and didn't have high expectations. I thought that the first act and the last sequence where he's seemingly trapped were fantastic. The rest of the film left a lot to be desired in my opinion.
@@VigiliusHaufniensis 😂 no problem. Just from the little I saw on IMDB it does look like a movie I would like. I'm hoping to have one more big theory video finished before the end of the year. That's my plan at least.
Definitely the best horror of the year, nothing else even comes close, Smile 2 is mediocre just like the first one and Longlegs is the "Sinister" of this era where it has good build up but completely blows it in the 3rd act.
Late Night With the Devil was the film that got my wife and me back in the theater for the first time in years. Great film. It left us thinking well after the end credits. Gus was my favorite character too. Nice review.
This was one of the best theater experiences i had this year. Smaller theater but it was lively. Made it feel like the studio audience.
I have to say (and MAJOR spoilers for this movie, past the third act)
...when I watched this, I made the wrong assumption, that the skeptic Carmichael Haig, was the actual Devil.
They are doing a vhs with that still in it.
They did do it actually
@@hikkchik Well... there's the watsonian cameras and the doyalist cameras. lmfao
The whole hypnosis element really had a 60s-70s kind of cultural vibe to me, even more than the cut of the clothes and the color schemes. It's one of those things that used to be a thing, but just isn't any more.
I watched this on Shudder with no expectations and loved it. But I was so disappointed in Longlegs after all the hype.
@@donnamurphy8551 I thought "Longlegs" was _visually_ impressive, really good, and fun to watch for that aspect. Story, dialogue, characters, plot mechanics, everything else -- well, not so much ;)
So happy to see you talk about this movie, definitely on my top3 movies this year ! thank you for the video
I've been wanting to talk about this one, but also worried about a video getting copyright claimed to the point no one would ever see it.
Luckily though all has been good and clear for the video. Hopefully it stays that way.
Been really looking forward to this one!
I'm just super surprised that I got it done so quick. Now to finish this Twilight Zone video, the Sinister reaction video, and to re-watch Longlegs.
This one was a special one for me. One of the better horror movies that I have seen in years.
The rising tension is horrifying in this movie
as a fan of found footage and horror mockumentaries, I enjoyed this. I have mixed feelings about the ending. I would’ve liked it to either end where it could have, with Leo pulling Jack out of the studio, or take a shorter route to the final scene.
Definitely needed this YT channel today
"Iiiiit's late night with Angel Heart‼️"
I soooo love that movie!
...exept that last effects shot
Thats an incredibly well done movie and LNWTD isnt in the same league.
Same!!!!!😄😄
Yes 🔥🔥🔥
Great review.
It's literally 2 videos crammed into one to attempt to give it that life.)
I get why some creators get burned out, but this is way easier than running an electrical business. 😂
10 years of manual labor is nothing compared to talking about movies I like.
Polter's back, boys!
Bro pls keep posting videos like this I love when you do theories and I love listening to them while I’m playing games
Damn am I really the only one that thought smile was mediocre at best and confused why it got a second one?
Oh cool. A fellow Indiana boy.
Glad to be here, dude.
I have thought on this comment since I saw it 3 days ago.
Been super confused since I'm from Arkansas, but I grabbed my Purdue hoodie again and it hit me. 😂
I also didn't go to Purdue, I went to Goodwill.
Best friend lives up there though, nice place when we've been to visit.
@@PolterGibbst 😂Whoops
The AI controversy is entirely valid and should not be discounted. AI generated labor is a poison that will spread if allowed to in the arts industry especially.
1 or 2 frames become 5, becomes a whole intro, becomes the advertising and trailers.
Then before you know it large studios assure their audiences that the algorithm has made the perfect Hollywood movie, and profits have never been higher after they fired literally everyone except the asshole punching in prompts.
fr. the AI usage really made me dislike this movie.
They should've just ended the movie 20 minutes early and it wouldve been ok.
Great video once again!
Just hoping this one remains up and claim free.
@PolterGibbst Fingers crossed!
Heretic might lowkey take the crown this year. Loved it.
Apparently I missed a lot of good horror films this year. I tend to kind of get caught up at the end of the year. lol
Ok, so far Heretic, Substance, and Longlegs are on the list. lmfao
He also mentioned Oddity and Caddo Lake, neither of which really seem like my kind of thing, but if people make a strong case for it, I'll give it a try. lol
@bronsoncarder2491 it has been an amazing year for horror. I saw the TV glow, in a violent nature, night bitch, terrified 3 smile 2, the first omen, I could go on, but yeah, hardly time to see them all.
Incorrect. “The substance” is the movie of the year.
@@jaykaye594- sounds like a skill issue bro.
@keanudarkly9497 nah brah, I don't spend as much time pack watching. Rip bozo.
@@PolterGibbst Looking forward to your take on it!
I don’t mind electricity in movies, especially when it’s a supernatural entity, because it can be the entity or power of it, that is being seen, not the electricity.
Even though it’s supposed to be tapping into it, one can forgive it, once a young girl’s head cracks open. 😆
*I agree on seeing it in a theater.
All those old people are up there, aren’t they?” 😝
That’s one hell of a tree fort.
Cant wait to see if u do Smile 2. I went in not expecting much but left asking WTF!
Lol. Love the skull rating meter.
Def a great year for horror as a whole, we had the creature feature, slashers, anthology & psychological 😩🥹
Speaking of anthology, Last question, do you plan on covering the vhs series?
Imo! The only movie close to LNWTD is LongLegs! Those others are good though! It's been a better than average year for horror!
Sweet! Ive been waiting patiently for your next video. Your The Thing episode is the greatest.
I grew up with these late night shows and i thought Late Night With the Devil was spot on. It was fun, but i felt like the ending was missing something.
I was just thinking about this movie randomly and couldn’t remember the name. Thanks for making this and reminding me lol. I personally loved it!!
As a fully formed adult female, I too solve all of my disagreements with vomitting black tar.
I watched it with my dad, he wasn't a fan but I loved it. The practical effects, everything they did to make it seem older, I just loved it.
YESSSSSSSS Here we go.
Gotta admit that I'm surprised that Smile 2 is mentioned in the same conversation as this or Longlegs. Felt like it took most of the good things of the first movie and just kinda threw 'em out the window in favor of 'oh no it's happening AgAiN~~'
Love the work bro. Keep it up
Great video! It was for the movies themes. or 3. What had begun was too late to stop (but, theologically, that raises more questions or discrepancies for me lol)
Also, you should check out Arcadian (2024) if you havent seen it yet. Another Cage film from this year, i would class it as horror but it leans more into the apocalyptic action genre. I think you'd find the creature design and the implied lore quite interesting. I just need more people to know about it lol
The empty bunny suit from session 9 behind you is creeping me out! I found myself fixating on it checking to make sure it hasn't moved! LoL 🤣
😂 I'm surprised it didn't move. Seems like I have to fix it everyday.
Really really enjoyed it and I think it’s definitely one of the best of the year, with a debate to be the best. So idk so much good stuff this year, a lot of it will come down to personal preference
Damn,i hadnt even heard of this movie. Going to sit down tonight and watch it now. Great review as always!
I was drunk and cooking chili on a quiet Saturday for my family when my husband put this movie on. I was super drunk but was so drawn into the movie I remembered it lol that’s how good it is
I'd absolutely love to see you cover Primer. I feel like if anyone could grasp the story and explain it, it'd be you
Can anyone explain how the unreal happenings during the hypnosis were recorded?
Other of my favorites if you need some recommendations are:
-The Invisible Man (2020)
-Poltergeist (1982)
-The Stuff (1985)
-Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
-Parasite (2019)
-Misery (1990)
-Possum (2018)
@@PolterGibbst I wondered if the new Invisible Man was any good. I liked the Kevin Bacon one despite all the... y'know, Kevin Bacon. lmfao
Parasite is one I've been meaning to get around to for a while now.
@akilahcopeland559 nice, I'll definitely have to check it out.
I loved this film so much, and it brought me back to the 70s and 80s when life was so much simpler. Also, I feel sorry for anyone who didn't like LONGLEGS. Cheers.
HER GHOST SHOWS UP 7 TIMES!?!?
Think I ended up counted more when I was editing. Still not as many times as Satan showing up in the Longlegs background.
Yes.
The foreshadowing is perfect because, dare I say it, the devil is in the details.
Muloc kidz. Thats the owl in the grove.
I agree. I thought it was the best horror movie I saw all year. The Substance was also pretty good, but I didn't like it as much. Longlegs wasn't a horror movie, it was just a very good marketing campaign.
This was a fantastic movie. Id love to see you cover The Void. A 10 skull movie I have to watch once a year at least, amazing practical effects
I saw it twice in the theater.
Ikr? Someone compared it to people boycotting ink pens because of quill pen makers.
@@donnamurphy8551that simile doesn’t make sense, the difference is that AI is not the future of art, AI steals art from actual artists…
It was something different for once. Enough said...it's not that the other movies were bad or tried nothing new - it's just there was such an effort put into setting up the universe in a way that showed a director in love with his concept.
I loved this movie I dont know why. LOLZ!!! Its just so fun and the attention to that 70s late night shows details. I just love it.
Thanx 😎
Is there somewhere a list of all horror movies that you ranked so we could see all scores and chose what to begin with?
I have a place on the discord of all the movies I watch and my thoughts.
And I have been slowly moving updating my Letterboxd account to have all of those movies with a score as well.

I loved this movie!!!
It was great but it was definitely not a horror movie, it was 100% a thriller with some horror elements at the end.
I feel like people are underrating this movie in the comments, it's a lot better than they're giving it credit for
like i said before i bought it because of your coverage...
Jack Deltroy reminded me of Jay Leno, not Conan. Leno is the kind of person who would gladly make a deal with the devil to get a talk show.
So two wrongs make a right?
I've watched both Late Night with the Devil and Smile 2. Late Night with the Devil was more scarier, because the movie felt more like an actual late show gone wrong, rather than a series of hallucinations caused by a smile demon.

Longlegs is the movie of the year, imo. Nicolas Cage deserves an Oscar nomination, at least for his portrayal, and so does the young woman who played the detective Mica( not sure of her last name or the spelling of her first, I apologize)
It was my favorite movie of the year
I watched it and didn't have high expectations. I thought that the first act and the last sequence where he's seemingly trapped were fantastic. The rest of the film left a lot to be desired in my opinion.
Every single other movie you mentioned in the intro sucked balls. Especially long fkn legs. Late night easily is the best horror of the year.
Amazing movie, loved every minute. But honestly, best horror movie this year was by far The Substance

Definitely the best horror of the year, nothing else even comes close, Smile 2 is mediocre just like the first one and Longlegs is the "Sinister" of this era where it has good build up but completely blows it in the 3rd act.
