  • This video shows a simplified version of how a car steering mechanism works. Rack and pinion steering is one of the most common steering mechanisms used in modern vehicles. This mechanism converts rotational motion into linear motion. In this type of steering, turning the steering wheel causes the pinion to rotate which then makes the constrained rack move left or right in a straight line. The rack is attached to a tie rod and steering arms which make the wheels turn left and right.
Increasing the size of the pinion (or decreasing the size of the rack) makes it so that a smaller rotation of the steering wheel causes the wheels to turn more. However, this means that more force is needed to turn the steering wheel.
Decreasing the size of the pinion (or increasing the size of the rack) will cause the wheels to turn less, which means the driver will need to turn the steering wheel more. This requires less force to turn the steering wheel.
Electric Power Steering system (EPS) is widely used on most cars to make the steering action effortless and more accurate. In this video, a column assisted power unit (Column EPS) is shown.
