- U2 are rock icons and have mad some absolute hits, so felt only right that I listen to arguably their Magnus opus "The Joshua Tree" An album that I have had on my list for a while. Finally getting to check out this full body of work was unreal. Bono and the gang were able to create such an iconic sound for the band.

You MUST react to Achtung Baby after this.
One Tree Hill is my favorite U2 song. I think it’s the emotional centerpiece of this album. It’s not showy like some other tracks on the album, but it seeps into your bloodstream after a few listens and rips you apart when you learn what the song is about.
This is a great reaction, man. So interesting to see someone react to this masterpiece for the first time. Your response is so authentic.
Best album ever!
thank you mate, such a fantastic project
One Tree Hill and Red Hill Mining Town 👍
Best album ever, should have brought world peace, cured cancer and stopped global warming. its that good.
My favorite U2 song of all time is Until The End of The World. It brings every U2 strength - lyrically, musically, live performance, and Edge on fire.
I saw U2 the second night of the beginning of the Joshua Tree tour in Phoenix, Arizona. It was magical. Two years later they came back as the biggest band in the world and filmed the Rattle and Hum film. Got to be there for both. Grateful.
Dnaiel Lanois and Brian Eno were the sonic architects of this album. Eno's signature ambient textures and floating, ethereal sound pallet really make this album something special.
Gigantic album, perfect. As 'Acthung Baby' (1991). U2 are magical.
As I can tell your Australian, so am I!
I actually flew from Melbourne to Las Vegas last year to see U2 at The Sphere, and I went to 2 shows while I was there. Let me tell you that those 2 shows were the BEST concerts I've ever seen in my life! And it will be very hard to beat it. In my opinion, they are the best live act you could possibly see
I think the next U2 album you should listen to should be Achtung Baby. It is considered their most "grungy" album. My favourite song from that album is "Until The End Of The World"
Ps. Bono plays the harmonica in the studio and live
man that's actually so awesome!
Caveman Jack,
Thank you for reacting to U2. Around 14-15 or more years ago, my parents used to play U2 around the house when I was pretty young. A couple years ago when I was really digging into music, I wanted to listen to U2 and their discography because I knew my parents liked them; however, I did not remember that I knew a handful of their later songs until I relistened to them. And wow, nostalgia was very strong.
I remember first listening to "The Joshua Tree" a couple years ago and thinking: this is the first album I've heard where every single song is fire!!! 🔥
U2 is my favorite band not just because of nostalgia. Their music and lyrics are so uplifting, transcendent, and spiritual. And to be honest, I connect with every album/era of their music in some way. In my opinion, one of the most underrated aspects about U2 is their ability to write subtle, powerful songs for people in distress and to address important social issues regarding humanity (such as Mothers of the Disappeared, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Miss Sarajevo). They are helping the world to become kinder, hopeful, reflective, and, for me personally, to turn to God more often and sincerely.
Anyways, thanks for your reaction. (And sorry this is so long.) I cannot choose one favorite U2 song, but here are several:
- I Threw a Brick Through a Window
- New Year's Day
- A Sort of Homecoming
- Running to Stand Still
- Love is Blindness
- Zooropa
- Walk On
- Magnificent
- This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now
- Miss Sarajevo (technically by Passengers, but I love it still)
You're awesome!!!
Thanks Legend, for the great write up, Joshua tree really is such a banger
I really enjoyed your reaction. Now I'm really curious to hear what you think of Achtung Baby. It's another absolute highlight in their career. For Achtung Baby, they had to completely reinvent themselves. Will you react to that album as well?
Added to my list for sure, hopefully can get to it sometime on the channel :)
That’s Bono on harmonica!
Took my 16 yr old nephew to the 30 yr Joshua tree tour in 2016. He'd been to many pop, hip hop and rap shows- he was blown away by this concert.
Really interested in hearing your thoughts on achtung baby
Good to see a young man appreciate a classic album from u2 and knowledgeable too,if you are going for a deep dive into u2 go for Boy their debut album then War and Achtung Baby another classic
I'm glad i got to listen to nearly every song and every album in it's entirety and seen them LIVE...a musical trifecta for sure. Love U2.
One of the few perfect albums out there.
I think you should try an REM record from early 90's. Out of time, automatic for the people and Monster are my suggestions
My favourite U2 song is City Of Blinding Lights, purely because of nostalgia. I found it in a time where I was hanging out with a friend a lot after a long period of loneliness. She lives in the nearest "big" city and I usually stayed there until after dark, and cycled to and fro every time. Looking back at all the city lights and listening to that song made me reflect on how glad I was to be with likeminded people again. Every time I hear the song it makes me think of how lucky I am for having loved ones around me, always making me think about those I love.
I was a huge U2 fan growing up, got into them around Rattle and Hum, got to see their ZooTV tour in Sydney where I was 2nd row in front of Bono after camping out with mates for 2 nights. It’s great music no matter what people say about Bono. Their early albums are great too
Exit live is an absolute show stopper. But, favorite live from thus album is one tree hill. The build from start to end is an angelic climb. RIP Greg Carroll.
Great review, Jack! Seconding this comment from @aarongroom3558. _One Tree Hill_ is a favourite live. 🎸 Though it's perfectly placed on the studio album, too, following the trickle-out of the rollicking _Trip Through Your Wires_ and before the darker tones of _Exit._ It's other-worldly. ✨️
English singer Kirsty MacColl set the running order for the album on the night before its deadline for completion. The band told her to put _Where the Streets Have No Name_ first and _Mothers of the Disappeared_ last, with the rest sequenced any way she liked. RIP Kirsty. RIP Greg.
100 percent!
Makes me happy that you reacted to Exit that way I did. Btw, saw U2 live at the L.A. coliseum front row at the Pop Mart Tour 1997, then 360 tour and the recent Joshua Tree tour, amazing concerts! Last thing, listening to Bullet in the Blue Sky while traveling through El Salvador sure added to my experience.
Massive millennial fan here. Saw them for the first time in Vegas. Unbelievable.
Great reaction as always Jack!!
I really think you’d love the 2017 self titled album by Slowdive just impeccable vibes throughout
Thanks legend!
Bono plays the Harmonica. My favourite U2 song is actually from the next album Rattle and Hum and it's All I want is You, a beautiful song that Bono wrote for his wife but i love it because of the ending and the lyrics, if you think With or Without You has a good ending, this song blows it out of the water in my opinion. Yeah this is my favourite U2 album with Achtung Baby a close second.
Great review Jack
As a fan of 38 years, Ive seen them 13 times. The Joshua Tree is number 2 by a hair to the perfection of Achtung Baby. ZooTV was the most insane and groundbreaking tour of all time.
Would be cool instead of doing an album, react to ZooTV Sydney 1993 concert.
Totally agree!
I’ve seen them 3 times. The first time was just after 9/11. It was extremely powerful. We truly felt as one. I recall the names of all the victims being reflected across the stage. So emotional . The band has an incredible way of making their audience feel united. Like we can accomplish anything.
wow that would have been so powerful
The whole of Achtung Baby!
my favourites are “a sort of homecoming” from the unforgettable fire and “ultra violet (light my way)” from achtung baby. i love the free-flowing structure and writing of the former. it’s a very unique song with great production. and “ultra violet” is just so incredibly intoxicating. it’s the great climax to achtung baby in my opinion. “where the streets have no name” is also in the mix though, no doubt.
One Tree Hill from the Point Depot is an outstanding live performance worth checking out.
Mother's Of The Disappeared as a Rattle And Hum outtake is another excellent live performance.
Seen U2 twenty times with the most recent at The Sphere, where they played every track from Achtung Baby, which is worth a full reaction.
Great as always Jack! I haven't listened to Joshua Tree in years and this brought everything back.
Still no Elbow though buddy? What you doing to me!! Check out The Seldom Seen Kid album, there's some songs you'd recognise for sure, plus it's a brilliant indie album from a brilliant band, still going strong after 30 years.
G'day Jack yep saw U2 in concert in Adelaide with BB King they are legends and their music sounds just as good as it did back in the 80's, pure talent will always be respected. Mate react to The Unforgettable Fire one of the most underrated Albums of all time. Yes the Joshua Tree is brilliant, loved it and I had it on Vinyl along with most of their albums.
Best money I ever spent -- tickets at the Sphere -- floor right next to the stage. Incredibly grateful I was able to do that.
Jack I saw them twice and they really were (are?) one of the best live bands of all. They weren't afraid to go beyond the songs and make them mean new things or explore new things harmonically (except for The Edge's guitar solos, ha)
Right there with you brother!
You should react to Where the streets have no name live, but in the Pop Mart Tour, live from Mexico (or Rotterdam), with Please, because there are many others reactions from versions like Slane Castle or ZooTV (masterpieces). The transition between songs (Please and WTSHNN) is fucking awesome, almost reaches the level of Running to stand still + WTSHNN Zootv live from Sidney
yep. one of the best albums of all time. it hasn't dropped at all in satisfaction since i first listened to it in 2006. my favorites are bullet the blue sky, running to stand still, and exit.
my overall favorite u2 song is "i fall down", off october. i'm a big fan of piano being incorporated into rock music
Nice Jack!! Seen when with or without you explodes at the Sphere, Las Vegas it was amazing! Im from Longford Ireland, just down the road from Dublin and proud that this band is from home... Favourite tracks would be bad, the fly and pride... love belting them out when cooking dinner 😂
that would have been amazing!
I feel like U2 have gone so far the other way in rating that they may honestly be underrated at this point. They're hated by so many who likely haven't listened to much of their music and it's such a wide spread of styles throughout too.
My favourite song is probably Bad from The Unforgettable Fire. The performance at Live Aid from 1985 is something any music fan should watch, it's magnificent.
I think U2 are so overhated to the highest degree. Yes, their recent albums aren’t great, and that whole deal with Apple was not good. However, that Apple issue was so long ago, and the music they made before then is more than deserving of appreciation.
Dude... amazing review!! Would love to see your reaction to all those songs but LIVE... you'll get som many goosebumps..
Thank you so much
Bullet the blue sky about money and war. Guitar sounds like a fighter jet.
Running to stand still about drug usage .
"Exit" is a song about a serial killer. It's so powerful the murderer of actress Rebecca Shaefer said he listened to it repeatedly before committing the murder. The band refused to play it live after the murder. They finally resumed playing it live during the Joshua Tree anniversary tour
I always go back an forth between With or Without you and Running to stand still as my favorite.
I love Running To Stand Still! The underlying emotion of it is incredible. There's also a version of Every Breaking Wave live on the East Coast, Cape Cod Beach house maybe?, that is absolutely amazing.
@@maryl1785 I love that cape cod beach performance.
My favorite from this timeless album is Running to Stand Still
so glad I finally heard this one for the first time
Favorite U2 song is Bad on the album before this one.
One Tree Hill bit of an under appreciated gem IMHO
Favourite song, Bad preferably live. 🥰
Go see them live any chance you get, even if its a shitty seat.
17:45 you dont listen to enough of the alternative genre haha.
