Nearly 40 years later, I still choke up at the line "Early morning, April 4, shot rings out in Memphis sky..." Not many songs have such an emotional effect on me. A very powerful song. There are other U2 songs I like better, for various reasons, but this one is very visceral.

  • @StevenTyree-sl2nx

This is an incredible song. Studio version is one of the best things I've ever heard. The song is about MLK, and is beautifully done. There were some that had a problem with an Irish band singing about uncomfortable American history. The April 4 line is the date of his assassination.
As for U2 there are many, many great songs to hear. For a reaction video the live version of "With or Without You" is stunning.

Yeah the musical production of studio and some live versions of this song is amazing and should be sought out by these channels hopefully on their own since making the effort to listen to a timeless classic.
The intro was interesting however - a time capsule. Bono is the lead for Geo Politics, but sadly, he go caught up with Klauss Schwab WEF as one of their minions. Hopefully, he gets his soul back.

  • @pcoleman1971

The peace in Ireland he is referring to is the Good Friday Agreement, which established peace in Northern Ireland after decades of conflict. The 25th anniversary of the agreement was this year.
Bono is correct in that it truly was a compromise. Northern Ireland remains part of the UK, but the Catholic minority which wanted to unite with the Republic of Ireland (South) now has greater representation and rights.
If you want a sense of this conflict, you can react to another U2 song, Sunday Bloody Sunday. I recommend the live version on Rattle & Hum.

The song was inspired by the works of Martin Luther King Jr. During the tour when the song first released, and U2 was touring in the south (of America), some crazy person made threats that he would kill Bono during this song if he tried to play it. The FBI took the threats so seriously, that they were on high alert during that concert. Bono said that he was so nervous when he sang that song that night, that he couldn't look out into the crowd, and he just stared at his feet. When the song finished, he looked up, and the bass player for U2 was standing in front of Bono during the entire song ... basically acting as a shield.
The album on which this song was release (the Unforgettable Fire) had another song, in addition to this one inspired by Dr. King ... aptly titled "MLK" ... a beautiful song.

I'm a white son of a Tennessee farmer. My dad died April 5th of this year. And I'm so proud that my dad's death is so close to MLK's, because black families didn't have a lot of opportunities for work in our area for a long time. But my father and his father both hired exclusively black workers, knowing that they had no opportunities...and they paid them fair wages. And they always came home to eat lunch with the family, even though they were initially uncomfortable with that (they had the mindset that the "master's" house ate first). It may seem strange, but we actually had to basically beg them to eat with us as equals. But we all had a beautiful familial relationship because of that. And we're all family to this day because of that.
When my grandfather died, my grandmother was already long gone. So we decided that the widow's seat at granddaddy's funeral should be reserved for the lady that took care of the house...a black lady who I always just assumed was my grandmother. Her name was Alice Anderson, but everyone lovingly always called her Gertrude...she was the closest thing to a widow at grandaddy's funeral. When Gertrude died, her family decided that our family should be sat in her funeral amongst blood family. We all just loved each other that way, and would openly talk about race relations. I even kind of fan fiction the idea that maybe grandaddy and Gertrude had a secret love affair that no one ever knew about.

As many people have already said here in these comments, Bono is irish, and yes, his fight is for justice and true peace and freedom; catholic people in Northern Ireland have suffered a lot for decades - as part of the protestant United Kingdom.
And I agree with those who said here that obviously your next step should be reacting to "Sunday bloody Sunday".
Then, you could react to some other of their hits: "I still haven't found what I'm looking for"; "New Year's Day"; "One love"; "Beautiful day"; "With or without you"; "Vertigo".
    Nice journey for you.

You floundered at first with your interpretation, but you got to it in the end. U2 are definitely an Irish band, and they were very strong advocates for peace. They came to popularity during the time of the Troubles in Northern Ireland (a war primarily about English vs Irish and Protestant vs. Catholic, though that's a simplification). This song is definitely about MLK, which you got perfectly. If you listen to their song Sunday Bloody Sunday, that's about a massacre during the Troubles in Northern Ireland that set off a fresh wave of killing/protests/violence. They have a long history of protesting this sort of horrific responses.

(Edited due to factual errors) Btw, these guys had one of the largest tours in History. The 360 Tour. Over 7 million people attended the concert in various venues. It cost $750 thousand a day to operate the tour including 300 people & 180 tractor trailers! The song “ULTRAVIOLET” included Bono’s laser jacket. Bono is a very thoughtful person. Whole group seems to be good humans. He (at least for a long time) realized that America was a great force for good in the world, despite our problems. A lot of U2's music has a message; Their early stuff (like this) has a much more vibrant energy. Later on they wanted to deliver more thoughts on commercialism or our culture's shallowness, etc. We think this song is just about MLK, but it's also about similar Troubles in Ireland. There is a lot of injustice in the world. Bono has done a lot of work in Africa, and is willing to look honestly at what solutions are working and aren't. U2's guitarist "The Edge" has a unique style, I instantly recognize it. The band has had several songs with religious themes. "When Love Comes to Town" with B.B. King is just amazing.

Sometimes we don't live up to that and it creates disillusionment for those that look up to us. The song is about God, yes it’s also about MLK but it’s mostly about Jesus, you must know U2 to know there early lyrics were quite religious

Great song! But in his opening speach, he referenced George Floyd. That thug's name should never be used in the same sentence with a hero like MLK!

It was brutal. If you're reacting to a live song, it's about the performance as much as the lyrics.

@@patchesblue155I was looking forward to this one. I like her reactions, but she wasn't reacting for most of it this time. She was trying to figure out what the song was about before it even started. She stopped the video too many times and tried to line up the lyrics with the live performance. Let the song play a little bit and go back if needed. I've been to many U2 shows. Bono goes all over the place live, and you need to watch the performance. If you want to analyze lyrics, do the studio version. Again, she has a great channel.

Jesus was betrayed by a kiss. Matthew Shepard was left dead on a fence. Some guys killed him because he was gay😢

This song came out years before Matthew Shepard was murdered. The barbed wire is a more generic reference to those who have fought and tied for justice.
