  • Thank you to our patron Scott for another great pick! I have for sure heard that chorus before... but the rest of the song I never have heard. The video was strange... almost nostalgic in a i've... i don't know, dreamt of that room before? so weird. The song was wonderful. The dissonant guitars... thunderous drums... and great vocals. Very adept arena rock with some layers to it... I dig it. I've heard other songs by them before but this was the first time I have ever sat down and

Passionate song! Fun fact: after the War album, Bono wanted to disband the band. He felt he was not a good singer. Bono met up with Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) in a pub, and over a game of pool she convinced him he has a great voice for rock and roll. The rest is history!

The first time I heard this song and The Edge’s guitar work that went along with it, I thought, “This man has figured out how to replicate bagpipes with a guitar.”
U2 from the 80s is very high on my all-time list of favorite bands. They made the waking nightmare of my life at the time more bearable.

First 20 years of U2 is up there with the best output from any band.
U2 changed their sound and image album on album. Various eras in the U2 back catalogue. Not so much the past 20 years. But the first 20 is outstanding.
To try and show you the mix go
    I will follow
    Sunday Bloody Sunday
    Bad
    With or without you
Where the streets have no name
    Desire
    The fly
    Mysterious ways
    Lemon
    Discotheque
    Beautiful day
    Vertigo

Honestly, based on this reaction, I wouldn't recommend those big hits to Lee. I would recommend almost anything from Achtung Baby, specifically, though. Arena rock songs, not so much.

@@robertbrenneman5367 I would recommend deep cuts over the big ones for Lee, to be honest, especially in light of how much he liked Love is Blindness.
I'm thinking An Cat Dubh from Boy instead of I Will Follow, and Twilight is a good option. Maybe Bullet the Blue Sky from Joshua Tree, Like a Song or even Two Hearts from War. From Achtung Baby, The Fly is good, but so is anything from that one, just leave One for later after doing Ultraviolet, or Acrobat, or Until the End of the World. From Zooropa and Pop, Numb would be really cool especially with the video. For Pop, I would go with Mofo or really If You Wear That Velvet Dress.
I'm a huge U2 fan, and they really shine with their deep cuts as well as when you watch a live performance. I admit seeing the Live Aid performance of Bad would be awesome.

"One man caught on a barbed wire fence" - Dietrich Bonhoeffer - anti-Nazi German dissident
"One man he resist" - Mahatma Ghandi
"One man washed on an empty beach" - Roger Casement - an Irish revolutionary who was betrayed by the Germans shortly before the Irish Eastern Rising of 1916. He was left on a beach, too sick to travel and was caught by the English who executed him after a controversial trial.
"One man betrayed with a kiss" - Jesus betrayed by Judas
" One man to overthrow" - Malcolm X
And of course the third verse is about MLK Jr.

  • @lauraallen55

Yes, Bono essentially writes the lyrics for Their songs. Most of their songs have some amazing lyrics too (This one not Anything out of the ordinary, though). He did have a lot of power in his voice in the 80s and into the 90s. They’re still performing by the way. I just saw them at the sphere in Las Vegas in December and they kicked ass!
They got together in 1976 when they were all still teenagers. They’re like family with each other. Larry Mullen on the drums Was once told to use A metronome. He replied, I am a metronome. He wasn’t wrong Lol!
Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois Produced their album from early 90s Called Achtung Baby and It was completely different from anything you’ve ever heard by them. I’m assuming you’ve heard where the streets have no name or I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.
Those are from Joshua tree album And non-hard-core fans usually go for when it comes to this band. I’m a hard-core fan and I don’t go for the songs from that album. lol!
The album I recommended songs from Has no filler. It starts like a party and ends with a funeral. I think you’ll have your mind changed about what kind of music they do when you hear some of those tracks. I’m not a singles person In general, and definitely not with this band. I always go for the deep cuts.
I’m glad you got to do a U2 song! They are definitely worth a dive And hopefully people don’t give you the singles Because I don’t think those Would be what you would particularly Like Best by them.

You're going to really like Bullet The Blue Sky. Not their most famous song by far but a gem. The drum and bass parts are really something. Also the guitar and vocals. 😄
But, as others have said, their catalog is deep. With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name, Gloria, Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Will Follow, Red Mining Town, the list goes on and on.

Their first popular song was ‘I Will Follow’ off their first album called ‘Boy’.
Not too many people react to U2. Maybe because many of their songs are so well known. IDK. But they were obviously a huge band. I got to see them in ‘83.
I would also recommend the first track off their second album called ‘Gloria’. It’s about God, not about a girl. It got a lot of air play at the time. The album was not well received but it’s one of my favorites from any band.

Here are a few that will never be requested but are moving to say the least. I would suggest to you : Tomorrow, Drowning man, Like a song, Indian summer sky, Running to stand still, Exit, Acrobat, Ultraviolet, Love is blindness and Please. Lee, I hope you see my comment further down in reply to your discussion with someone else because U2 are worth a deep dive, just maybe not the big arena rock hits most would probably keep suggesting. I'm thinking about what you would probably like most. :)
Here's an interesting thing that occurred once to U2. Bono's life was threatened if they did this song. Adam is their bass player.
'U2 began their Joshua Tree Tour in Tempe, Arizona, where the governor was opposed to Martin Luther King Day being made a US federal holiday. By the time the band headed back to Tempe to close out the tour, they were receiving death threats for supporting the proposed holiday. Things took a serious turn before their gig at Sun Devil Stadium when someone claimed he would shoot Bono on stage if he sang the King-inspired song. Bono recalls in the band's book U2 by U2: "One night the FBI said: 'Look, it's quite serious. He says he has a ticket. He said he's armed. An he said if you sing 'Pride (In The Name Of Love),' he's going to shoot you.' So we played the show, the FBI were around, everyone was a little unnerved. You just didn't know, could he be in the building? Up in the rafters? On the roof? During 'Pride,' I was singing the third verse, 'Early morning April 4, a shot rings out in a Memphis sky.' I just closed my eyes and sang. And when I opened my eyes, Adam was standing in front of me."
