Great video for the diesel guys out there there is a hundred videos of fuel pump kill switches but that could ruin the injectors especially if the thief is persistent!
My friend had the fuel pump kill switch on his Ford. It was stolen but he knew it wouldn’t go very far so they drove around for a bit and found it in a parking lot nearby. He turned the pump back on and drove home. I like the ignition disable so that they don’t get out of my driveway.
I would have to look at a diagram but there’s probably a small gauge yellow wire on my truck as well that may also be for the airbag. But the starter wire is a much large wire I’m guessing 12 or 10 gauge.
Awesome video. I have a 2001 Silverado 5.3 and I seen you spliced the yellow cable from the ignition switch. All this was done before it getting to the crank fuse correct?
Hello great video. I really want to get this to work on my truck. I have a 99 silverado 1500 and it doesn't have the black and yellow wire. I have everything else working just can't find the correct wire horn. The relay is activating just need the correct horn wire. Would you happen to know which wire that would be on a 99. Thanks
@@ThatllDoEngineering Thanks for the quick response ! Im trying to install a starter interrupter harness basically it has a insertable chip you can remove and disrupt starting the vehicle its calling for tapping into “starter wire at the car keyswitch should show +12v only when cranking” could i tap into the yellow wire you did in this video to install it? I also have a 2006 silverado if it matters
Hi . . . Excellent 👍 Thank you for your presentation, much appreciated I am without a doubt taking this route . . However, i would be very interested if u could extend this project further . . . 1) Is it possible, and how to:- - Add a Override (Key Switch) to be used for vehicle servicing/repair work; and 2) 2 LED's (switching) 1 for when system is activated, and the 2nd one (when system is deactiated) . . 1st one "off" LED's can be constant or flashing Thanks once again
If you look back at the drawing in the beginning of the video you will where I drew in how to wire the led for the ignition off position. If you put an led on the other side of that switch it would come on when the ignition is enabled. I would have to think on the bypass switch.
I did yourtrick but have one question. When I cut the yellow ignition wire which side supplies the 12v. I’m using the relay too. Does the one that comes form the firewall go to the center pole on the toggle switch or do I hook the other side, the one coming from the key ignition to the center pole ? Thanks
I would confirm this with a volt meter if you can but I’m pretty sure the firewall side is the output and the 12v comes from the column. If I remember right if you get it backwards it will still function as a starter disable but the horn won’t honk because the relay has no power. Then you’d just switch the two yellow wires.
I am a novice so a dumb question. I didn't see where you put the relay? Did you just tuck it up in the other wiring? And does it need to be grounded to the frame?
Just tuck the relay wherever it will go. The body of the relay is plastic so no need to ground it. The ground for the circuit is connected to one of the relay terminals (see the diagram I showed at the beginning of the video).
I don’t believe so since the signal to the toggle is 12v you need the relay to turn the + into a - signal for the horn. But if you come up with another way please let me know. It could make this cheap project even cheaper
This is probably a dumb question but could you use a On/Off switch with only 2 pins and still some how wire it up to a relay and have the horn work? From the looks of it a On/off switch with 3 pins will work for sure wired up to the relay. Any specific single switch you recommend with only 3 pins?
I don’t see how it could be done with a simple on/off switch and operate the relay. I suppose it would work to honk the horn when you turn the key but the engine would still crank. I think you have to have an on/off/on switch to do both. If you search “on/off/on toggle switch” on Amazon there are several options
You want the horn function you need the relay, if you want a kill switch all you need is a standard on/off toggle switch from your local auto parts store and that’s it. Just interrupt the signal on that yellow wire and the truck won’t crank
The horn wire (black with yellow stripe) is the ground to the horn. The horn should have power all the time. Check your horn fuse. Also make sure the ignition wires are not backwards on the toggle switch, if they are it will still operate as a starter disable but the relay will not receive power from the ignition switch to activate the horn.
It is an on/off/on toggle switch. I used a double pole double throw so I could connect led’s on the other side of the switch. But a latching spst on/off/on will do.
Then ya runs outside with the 870... or here in NY you reason with the bad guy first.. BTW how did the bad guy get INSIDE to begin with? no glass shock sensor?
I don’t know how criminals break into cars or bypass alarm systems, but I figure it can’t hurt to add one more deterrent. What I need to figure out is how to put an alarm on my catalytic converter, that seems to be the hot item to steal right now.
@@ThatllDoEngineering I hear that they're being stolen at an alarming rate! I mean i have a vibration and shock sensor on my glass.. you're telling me that a saw zall wont set of the shock sensor?
@@ThatllDoEngineering use stamping tools and stamp the VIN number into the catalytic converter, , some states have a law that requires salvage yards and places that buy them to record the VIN number and require the seller to provide proof they own the car with that VIN number , both parties can be aressted if they viloate this law ,
How would this work exactly? Because if the ignition wire is powering the switch and you flip it to the starter part of the switch wouldnt that send power to the starter and just allow the truck to start by using the switch? This is the problem Im having with my truck.
The switch would only get power when the ignition is in the crank position so the switch is dead when the key is off. Even if the switch were hot all the time it would crank the engine but not start because the ignition is off
@@ThatllDoEngineering that's not what happened when I tried it today. I used a on/off/on switch because I dont need the LED. Was the middle contact supposed to be empty? I wired my ignition wire in the middle, starter on the left and horn on the right. Is it just supposed to be the starter wire and horn and not the ignition wire?
The center should be the starter wire (from the ignition switch) one side should be the starter wire to the starter and the other side is the horn relay. This setup is interrupting the signal from the key switch and should not have any other source of power.
@@ThatllDoEngineering oh ok, I'm doing this in my 94 K1500. Theres only 1 starter wire that's in the ignition harness, I dont think theres another one in this older system. Will this setup work at all then?
I think it would work the same, you just need to look up which wire is the crank signal wire from the ignition switch to the starter. They probably changed the wire colors from 95 to 06.

Hi great video, I’m planning on buying an 04-06 Tahoe z71 and I heard it’s a commonly stolen vehicle so would this work for that vehicle? Thanks
Should be the same wiring I would think.
Do you need to buy a relay to add to get the horn to come one or just splice into the horn wire??
You need the relay because you need to turn the 12v from the the starter wires to a ground signal to the horn.
Awesome video. I have a 2001 Silverado 5.3 and I seen you spliced the yellow cable from the ignition switch. All this was done before it getting to the crank fuse correct?
I’d have to double check if that’s before the crank fuse, but I believe it is.
I need to see how the actual switch work tired of people half ass showing what’s going on

It looks like it’s the black wire on the left connector (brown one) of the body control module under the dash.
Can I run a basic on and off switch with one wire and another wire to just interrupt the starter wire without having a relay ?
Yep
I've never worked on a keyless system.. would this concept work on that system as well?
If you’re talking a newer vehicle where you just have a fob in your pocket and push a button to start, I have no idea. All the junk I own is old.
concept would work but the wiring will differ , go to the library and look in the Mitchell One books , the have color coded wiring diagrams
Is that wire for the starter at the keyswitch? Does it only get 12v when cranking or is it constant 12v
The signal you are interrupting is the crank signal to the starter so it only has 12v when cranking

What gauge wire is the yellow wire? It looks like it's bigger, and it looks like you did use an appropriate sized wire with the red wire.

So pin 87 and 86 need to be wired to ground or just left unconnected?
Both need to be grounded
Would I still need a double pull double throw switch if I chose to not use the LED option ?
Nope, a simple on/off/on would do the job
Make a video of the process! 🙏🏼 i have a 06 chevy

Under the dash preferably in a place that’s not easily accessible to a person trying to steal your truck

Dont know if you may see this but my question is , what amperage should the switch be?? Thank you
