Cold War Commander Battle Report 2 - Encounter Scenario

- My second play through of Cold War Commander for my 6 x 6 Game Challenge.
I made several rule mistakes in my first play through so I decided to re-play the game without changing the army lists or scenario.
Hopefully I got most of the rules right this time. I enjoyed the game, but I'm not sure the US are able to compete with this small of a game using only tanks. Only having 4 tank units is very limiting and made it easy for the Russians to outmaneuver them.
I think I will up the points of the next game and maybe give the Russians better tanks so their won't be as large of a difference in numbers.
You can see more of my projects on my blog. gamingandshooti...
I'm just getting into the hobby and am very interested in this rule set. I really enjoyed watching this battle report! Thank you for sharing, and PLEASE show some more of them. It was really engaging and very informative!! You did a great job.
Thank you very much!
I have more videos planned, but I wanted to get some different models painted for my next game. I primed some M60s this weekend and once they are painted, my US forces won't be so outnumbered. I also need to get some US infantry painted up.
All that to say I have more videos planned and I hope to have some coming soon.
That sounds great! Have you thought about doing any Team Yankee in 6mm videos also? I've been looking into that game as well. In fact, didn't I see something from you on the Team Yankee 6mm Facebook group page last week? As a child of the '80s, Cold War and SciFi holds a bit more interest for me than WWII.
I have played one game of Team Yankee to test out the rules, but didn't do any video of it. I feel like I need to add to my collection of models to do that game justice. As I said, I'm working on stuff, but have a lot to get done.
Yes, I am on the the Team Yankee in 6mm Facebook group and share may painting and unboxing videos there.
I haven't given those rules a fair shake yet, but from my limited experience with them, I'm not sure I will like them better than Cold War Commander. But we will see.
I normally have much more interest in sci-fi games, but my interest in WW2 games started a couple years ago and now the Cold War Era has drawn my attention. There are just so many great games and models.
@@HerooftheTable I'd love to see some Team Yankee 6mm games. Thanks for the content. You've inspired me to build a 6mm British and 6mm East German force for 6mm. The 15mm scale I didn't work for me but this looks much more 'to scale'
@@gordonmckerrell3614 I'm glad to hear you are building some forces in 6mm. This type of game really seems to fit 6mm best.
I'm not sure I will be doing any Team Yankee videos at this point. I've read through the rules, and they just don't really appeal to me. I do want to get some more videos made of Cold War era gaming though. I just bought a second hand West German army. I'll need to do some touch up on the paint job, but look forward to trying them out at some point.
Even with bad rolling for the Americans and questionable tactics, those Abrams still should have done far better against T-55s, which were designed in the 1940s. Tactically I wonder if keeping the Abrams on the move and taking advantage of their relative speed against the T-55s, might not be the way to go.
Great video, making any more?
Glad you enjoyed it. I have not been able to make any videos for a little while, but I'm hoping I can get back to them soon.
Tanks only have 90 degrees LOS visibility arc out their front, so those tanks wouldn't be able to see or shoot the flankers
I must have missed that rule. Thanks for letting me know. I've been playing that wrong the whole time.
Hey Sean. Did you ever figure out damage caused by arty? I can't find the 'hits' for arty in the rules. Thanks.
Robert Erdman I have yet to use artillery in my games. I’ll have to look at the rules and see what I find.
Thanks for the video! More comments later on as I get to finish watching the report, but you had the number of shots wrong on the flanking attacks on the M1's. The T55's are S2 models, which means they get -2 dice when firing on the move. So, you would have fired 6 shots less than you actually did.
So many things to keep straight. :(
I think I missed that because the US took their opportunity fire and then I forgot they had moved when I got to their shooting. Thanks for pointing it out.
I question why the american tanks would barrel forward against a superior sized force on the first turn. Why didn't they dive for a flank and/or some cover to set up some ambush positions. The video was good . I have no experience with these rules but they look quite playable.
I'm glad you liked the video and you ask a good question. First, I'll say that I'm no great military strategist.
My plan was to seize the initiative and try to take out a couple of Russian tanks in the first turn. I was hoping I could take out a tank or two with the superior firepower of the American tanks. Then I lost a tank to opportunity fire, then I failed my activation roll to fire on the Russians.
The next game is going to have more US tanks and another command element so I have more chance to active units.
I think this is pretty much the only decent video on this game on youtube, so thanks for the upload and the explanations, I've been looking for a tabletop Cold War tank game for some time.
Some quick questions, are these GHQ models? And do you think all the "eras"/conflict-based armies are balanced in terms of points cost? Any chance we might get an overview of a game with aircraft as well?
And lastly, I've noticed that all the games in this scale and Team Yankee, tanks seem to move as squads, are there any games that play "realistically" in a skirmish type setting with tanks moving as squads but more spread out?
Sorry for the tonne of questions, moving from 28mm games like Warhammer and Warmachine to small scale is quite a challenge to finding groups and people!
I'm glad you liked the video. I have plans to do more videos on this game and other similar rule sets as well (Fistful of TOWs 3 and maybe Team Yankee).
Yes, these models are GHQ. I've been working on some other models from other manufactures that you will see in future games.
I've only played this game a hand full of times and have not explored the other eras, so I can't really say if they are balanced or not.
I will be adding in rules as I learn new stuff. I plan to add some aircraft eventually, but that will likely be a bit down the road.
For me, playing in 6mm allows me to play larger games. I want to move "squads" of tanks around. This rule set allows you to move individual models, but in a tank on tank battle I'm not sure it would work out well. Once I get infantry painted for both sides, I plan to do some infantry battles with Tanks there for support. I'm not certain yet, but those games may not have squads of tanks to activate together.
I hope that answers your questions.
The problem with dice is that you are relying on chance instead of probability. There are many factors that go into battle and they are too numerous to list and to incorporate into either a historical or real time game. Even though some of the factors are known they have to be weighed and weighed relative to other factors. The end rest is that chance dominates the field of battle. For instance in this game the dice are rolled to determine everything. One player has to set until they get an "activation" or fire repeatedly before their adversary can return fire. Some of the point missed are technology, training, tactics, battlefield doctrine, shell time, maximum shell type load, and many other factors including many other factors. Also, the Russians are deploying with T-55's against US M-1's. This should not even be a fair fight! However, the M-1's are just going to set there and let the T-55's have at them. Just play a game and make it very simple.
Using dice do refelect probability, where you need an 8 of a D10, that represects an 80% probability, the granularity of the probability steps is determined by the type of dice, a D6 represents roughly 16% steps, a D10 10% steps and D20 5% steps
this game is all about playability they through out the historical part. a T-55 could never kill an M1 at range. I'm sticking with Fistful of Tows 3.
