A board game is actually a good way to think about this. Rolling a dice and getting random combinations would be realistic in the sense that a war can go ANY way. Would you have preferred a online dice roller? Dice work on %chance of an outcome. What would you use to equate to the randomness in war? Sometimes theres an equipment failure, sometimes user error, sometimes morale can lead to forces performing better than usual, maybe weather affects the outcome of a fight between 2 opposing military units. Rts games are not as reliable as a dice based game because they don’t account for the randomness of real war. Dice are unbiased and can have a positive or negative outcome, the wake island battle in ww2 saw 4 us fighters vs 40 and those 4 fighters somehow shot down 21 which goes entirely against any predictable outcome
