Eureka is brilliant an epiphany moment for me. I’m 60 years old, lots of lessons in last 30 years offering little improvement. I feel real advancement now with Eureka golf swing. An English man offering a Scottish man many thanks and well deserved. Thanks again 👏
Steve, this year I had my annual lesson, set up square like you used to do. I've been aware of the Eureka set up, I used to do it instinctively when I had to hit high over a tree, ball forward etc. I always struck the ball better this way. Now at 63, I too find it hard to clear the hips with the square set up, I end up a little steep. Since May I've been at odds with my lesson and your method. I'm finding yours so easy to clear the hips before the shoulders. Being at odds is fine on the range, but I haven't trusted it on the course, so I've stuck to the lesson. Well, no more, tomorrow I'm using your set up, I'll miss the green at times, but I did with the square set up, so I've nothing to lose. I'm off 5, at this time in my life, I'm going to embrace your method. If it goes well, I'll go further with it. Thanks for the good explanation of this, looking forward to the journey.
Hi Steve , I tried this on course last week and it really did work for me.it took me a wile to work out ball position (had to play it a lot further back than I imagined) especially driver but can't wait to get back out and try again. Thanks for all the free lessons and tips you are providing us top man.
As a kid (a million years ago) I was a discus thrower and was coached to reach the delivery position with the lead foot "open" to the target. This was seen as an important part of the power position, allowing for better body rotation, unblocking the hips. The fetish for feet parallel to target line in golf has never made any sense to me. Actually, much of traditional golf instruction seems like a system of belief that mere mortals should not question. Great video. Perhaps the physics bit is to do with parametric acceleration. Loved the little one's input too!
Great example John. I also think of a boxing stance, open to allow the hips to rotate to generate more power. Throwing a discus, throwing a punch, throwing the golf club head...seems intuitive.
Brilliant Steve! Going to try this as well but may need to lift the left leg as us "older" folk need a little more turn. Love the family stuff with your lad as well, need more of that. Can't wait to see mr. Johnston junior on tour in 12 years or so.
I had to do this cause of a serious back injury and it works incredibly especially if you turn your right knee and put your weight on the inside of the right foot and use it for torque.. Good video great son.
Really entertaining and informative. Loved the wee man. It is the pulling and slinging description from the top that really helps. I thought your explanation was good.
Tried today and it worked perfectly, after having a knee replacement 2 years ago I started to play golf, but I struggled to start my downswing from the ground which made me swing over the top. This setup has already transformed my ball striking and distance instantly, because my hips are already open when get to the top I feel like the transition has already started and I just drag my arms/hands through. Thank you very much for the video Steve 👍
I pulled left a lot and pull draws but as soon as I setup like your swing and my left side opened up I started draws and straight, the setup opens up the hip and allows my right side to go under and turn rather than over the top and left... thank you! Anyone with over the top should try this!
Good thing I've seen the movie Snatch many times. Otherwise, being a "southern yank" from Louisiana, I'd have never known what a caravan was. Not sure how I even landed on your channel, but glad I did. Surfing youtube for early extension fixes and came across you- glad that I did. Terrific videos, with great insights and some comedic value as well! Liked and subscribed. Thanks Steve. Agree with other comments as well, nice to see you bringing your boy along.
Figured this out myself today and googled it which landed me here. What a difference for me and I will add if you are right eye dominate that is another big factor in this working for you. Wish Id found your videos before now but at least I can play well in 2019 and be more consistent going forward. Thanks for the reassurance
Watched this this morning and tried it on my local 9 hole course at lunchtime. Best strikes ever with my irons. Even worked with driver and fairway woods. Longer and straighter. Nice baby draw. One swallow does not make a summer. But!!!
I'm really enjoying watching your Eureka series, Steve. I think that a swing which is a combination of Ben Hogan's and Lee Travino's is a recipe for huge success. There is a story that Ben Hogan sent his clubs to Lee Travino because Hogan believed that Lee Travino was the finest striker of the ball. So you're definitely on to something! I'm currently saving up to buy a set of clubs after a 30 year hiatus away from golf - can't wait to try your technique out at the range when I have them. Great videos. Best wishes from Perthshire.
I keep hearing you mentioning Eureka and finally ive found the first video (i hope). Enjoying the content...more of the same please. I best get on and watch the rest in the series. By the way great to have some Golf Stuff where i dont need to use subtitles...
Tried this today.60 years old tragic golfer who has worked on an upgraded swing (tried many tips and decide on a body turn swing would be best) due to age related flexibility issues, Hcp9 shot 78 on par 71 course with greens cored during the week so putting was a nightmare (missed 9 10 foot putts) . With Driver hit 100% (never before) of fairways and went ave of 240yds with longest 260Yds. Haven"t hit a straight ball in 20 years. Mainly a draw or hook and occasionally a bad slice. Today hit 90% of them dead straight. Iron shots went straight even though average dropped to about 70%. I rarely hit them straight either. Was able to turn through the swing without going home with a sore back. Thanks Steve for this very useful instruction.
As a left hander that slices .. a lot!!!! this is awesome!!! Went out the day after I saw these videos, and after about 15 -20 balls getting set up and comfortable... It started to click... I started with my 7,6,5, irons... and not only did I swing smoother, I honestly thought the balls went consistently, straight.. and seem to have good carry.... If you are an over the top swinger... this will definitely help... will let you know about other clubs... later.
I use this position on all short irons to cover the ball. Very accurate, had to get into a discussion on the range with a couple of players. Had to explain the science behind it. Thanks!
Love eureka moments. Great interaction with your lad too but not sure how many o's there are in Pooosh. 🤣 keep them coming Steve that's the second one this week I've found helpful.
Thanks for sharing your Eureka moment. I played baseball until I was 36. Weight does not transfer to the front foot in baseball. So, when I took up golf I always had trouble with my weight hanging back and as a result I was a picker of the ball. I learned golf like Hogan, I dug my swing out of the dirt until I could get the ball to go where I wanted. I worked my way down to a 2 hdcap for about ten years. Off the T I was long but my middle and longs irons were not that accurate. Fortunatly, my short game and putting were spot on. I took a break from golf for about 5 years and back in January a friend asked me to go play at a goat track of a municipal course. No bunkers, every shot in the fairway and the rough for that matter was a thin lie. The greens are tiny and turtle backs. I took my clubs to the course but not my game, I basically forgot how to hit the damn ball. I couldn't even pitch and chip the ball. Don't think I broke 100 either round. Actually ended up with severe sciatica shooting down my leg for about a month. I dealt with that by intense stretching and improving my overall conditioning. I watched the video went into garage to hit wiffle balls off a matt with a seven iron using your Eureka setup. One thing that happended immediatly was that because my hips started open I was able to finish my hip rotation which transferred my weight to my front foot! At best I could only get my right heal raised but never up on the toe. Using the Eureka method, I get a complete transfer to my front foot. I've heard that the range is going to open one day this week. So I am going to start with a large bucket and my seven iron and hit three quarter swings focusing on set up, shallowing the club and swing down the line of outside cane. Will try to reestablish my tempo. Wthout my tempo my swing right now resembles something akin to epilepsy, I'll try this for a week and then evaluate if I have something I can take to the course. One of my favorite visual from you is the picture with the man in the long tunnel and the man on top of the bridge, Stops the early extension. My ancestors were part of the Campbell clan in Inveraray, In 2012 I took a six week trip to Scotland. Stayed all over Scotland, played alot of golf and saw a lot of castles. The whole time I was there I felt like my soul had come home. Listening to you and seeing the scenery leaves me yearning for a return, Enjoyed your video, your instruction and your genuine dedication. Cheers
Still going strong. I've just shot an 81 and an 82, which are 4 or 5 shots better than my handicap. I got rid of the smothered pull (I was hooding the clubface shut instead of just letting it sit naturally on the ground)
Did this on range few years ago worked really well but seamed to struggle on course with it What a noticed was how easy you can take out the right or left side of the course or green And how I did this was by moving the the alignment stick If want take out the right side just move the alignment stick bit more to the left (feet path or club path) And if you want take out left side move the alignment stick more to the right (feet path or club path) Try this Steve you will be amazed
Fun watching again the inception of Eureka. Of course by now, you've put out many more, started a website, etc., but nice to see (again) how it started. When did you add the "aim right" element. Notice it wasn't there initially. Really great stuff. Played this game 52 years, and now I've found consistency thanks to you Steve, and of course Eureka !
Steve, just a point which is applicable with boxing, this is where either right or left arm is dominant, based on golf what arm controls the club. Have you looked at either using the left or right being the biased form each arm. I feel that the left arm can cause massive amounts of problems due to pulling. As you mentioned pulling through impact.
Great video Steve I will definitely try it.Yes I think it is a Eureka moment as it will automatically deliver that lag that feels so good when you hit the ball.
Big fan Steve! Your one of the best golf vloggers on youtube. Keep up the great insights into the golf swing. Continue to keep it real in 2018. Happy Xmas to you and yours.
That was exactly my words-'Eureka'. You have better impact because u don't have to manipulate your body (with so much detrimental forces on the body)'to get the impact when the ball is almost tangential to the swing at impact point. You have to practice it to find the correct grip, ball positioning configuration to achieve the ball flight desired. This actually the only correct golf set-up to be employed by a right handed golfer that would reduce wear and tear on the body, but remains effective in ball striking.
Another point worth trying is to use a reverse overlap ( putting grip ) stops you overgripping and consequently allows you to easily maintain a flat wrist. BTW. Enjoying your channel. Cheers
Steve you talk about Zack Johnson and the way he finishes. He has little or no wrist clock . I watch all your videos and been working on the swing . Sometimes I get messed up on what my wrist should be doing .Should I be cocking them or just keeping them firm.
Ok. I’m in. I went to the driving range yesterday to test this theory out. NOT comfortable (at first) because I took great pride in my square address. But I cannot deny the results. Flushed...every...damned...ball. My swing still isn’t pretty but the shots are long and up the middle.
Hi Steve, Just had a try at this at the range with a 7 iron. Pretty good results, some lovely contacts with a ball flight that had a tiny draw. But some AWFUL fat smothered shots too, that I don't know the cause of. I have played 30 years plus and have always fought an over the top move, I find it very difficult to keep the arms out of it, but for a first try, not bad. Where is the ball position in relation to the feet? I had to keep putting it back to avoid those fat shots. The driver would not draw though, it was either pretty straight or a fade/push, weak grip probably?
Hi so I tried this out and it’s working pretty well, only thing is I hit it a bit thin. Also do your hips as well as your feet aim left and just your shoulders and club aim at the target? Cheers
Hi Steve, Its going really well . . . . I won the monthly medal a few days ago and then went out yesterday and shot 4 shots better. I would like to eradicate my bad shot though, which is a low smothered pull hook?
Would this work for me as I have a fused lower back I feel like if I stand square I literally just come over the top every time .... was ready to quit to be honest
Awsome video Steve, you should do more videos in this vlog type format sepesially with the wee man he's way funnier than you. That aiming left thing makes a lot of sence and I can see how it would probably help me as I regularly get stuck on the inside and dont clear my hips. Resulting in a shot that looks a bit like a shank, low, right and really ugly but no or little curvature. Is this something you would actually game though or would you just use it as a drill so that you get the feeling then square up more on the course?
Would this be a good approach if my tendency is to push right alot? It seems like this could be a eureka for a lot of us especially those who spin out too quickly.
the greatest thing about setting up open is that it is much easier to drive the lower body to the target. Most of us want to goat hump a bit, and an open stance turns a goat hump into a hip drive going towards the target line. If you get the arm swing working with this, you can actually make a very synced-up and effortless swing.
Think you've stolen my idea! LOL and you've really helped me out, I've a spinal injury and nerve damage affecting both legs, I've naturally a very inside to out, quite flat swing and struggled to get any semblance of weight transfer, incidentally I've been chipping using this method for years with great effect any never considered using it for full shots! only issue, any tips on avoiding getting the right elbow getting trapped behind?
Technically I don't think it matters how you align as long as your club face is square to the target. Hardest part about golf is lower body rotation while everything in setup is linear. It's like you have somewhat preset your lower body position to the full rotation. Great stuff
It's funny using this technique has always resulted a better swing for me at the range however I square up my feet and shoulder to the target subconsciously when I play and it completely alter my swings and mess me up. I drive farther opening up my hips left of the target. Maybe I should just use what feels natural.
Found your channel purely by accident, but OMG this sounds so logical I`m off to the Range to give it a try. Quick Question my feet are aiming left, so do my hips and shoulders aim left as well or do they aim down the target line?
dear Coach .. I have watched this video before and this time, I am still a bit confused still - in the car, you said, ".. have not done much practice due to work, family etc .." & you are on your way to the driving range - aren't you a full-time golf trainer and you do hit balls from your training cabin, right?
Actually I discovered this on my own but called it my "AHA" moment. lol How do you address the ball? Do you take your normal square position and then drop your front foot backwards? Do you aim your feet and then square your shoulders? Is there a different ball position? I found that on the range when I rarely move my feet and hit the same club over and over, that when I take it to the course that I can get out of position slightly when changing clubs in the course of the round. BTW Well explained!
Address the ball with everything open (left) then close my shoulders to the target line. Ball position is fractionally further back than normal so i am entered slightly ahead of the ball.
Cricket, baseball, hockey, even throwing a ball, lead foot open. The geometry of the straight line of arm and club combined with a quiet flat lead wrist. Simple. Now to swing the club instead of hitting the ball.......
Steve you are not aiming left! Your shoulders are square hence the club is aiming towards the target. The feet are open and hence allow your hips to start open. There's a whole lot of stuff out there on an open stance.qv.The Open Stance by John Wright.
Love the theory Steve looking forward to trying it. Although your feet were aiming left it looked like your shoulders were still square to target , is that correct?Cheers
Absolutely that is what creates the lag and pulling action. The hips are already in a through the ball position and dynamically they pull the shoulder through. Go to the range and aim left of your intended target then square you shoulders up to the target and block it out towards the target. Thats the feeling I had when playing today. I aimed left and hit a push...brilliant results
So I mentioned I had dabbled with this in the past because I saw old golfers at the turn of the 20th century doing this. And when I tried it, it worked well for a while and then I got inconsistent and gave it up. Now I see you adjusted ball position and I was playing everything very far forward. So maybe I have to experiment with that.... But my theory was this: Why in the golf swing do we set up in a position that is not in line with our impact position? We start out in position A, we move to position B and we need to get to position C. As Mr. Spock would say in Star Trek....illogical! Why not set up in position C, turn back to B and return to C? Eliminate A altogether! Doesn't the idea of less moving parts = consistency? Wouldn't it be logical to set up in the position you want at impact... to pre-set if you will... or to say it another way, why not start in the position you want to return to at impact? That seems logical. Now the best thing about this is, that with more open hips, it is much easier (especially as you get older..trust me on this one) to turn into the shot if your hips are pre-set open. And as you mentioned, there are the counteracting forces... I feel that the backswing is shorter... I swing inside but this allows me to have the "Hogan" connected feeling... left arm across the chest and then turn the body and the turning of the body pulls the left arm into the hitting area like someone turning around with a pail of water in their hands... to me it makes use of centrifugal force to whip the club around. Your thoughts?
Takeaway is miles inside and you set the club so early, you have no width, no wonder you have no lag. Watch any face on wiew of a great ball striker, they use the motion of the club to hinge it and they start turning before they finish the Backswing. That is where the resistance is coming from. That is how you load the shadft and create lag. Tiger does this the best.

I, for one,at least-really enjoyed this little tidbit!
Steve it was nice to see your son with you it's the reason I came back to playing I have stuffed knees but the reaction my son to back he's only 8
This really works for me more especially on my iron play

Can hear the strike flushed. Tried it in garden today with lob wedge and it was awesome

I have to try it. I think it might help me complete my swing, which is a problem. I always seem to end up pulling up short, and losing distance.
Genius idea bud right arm pull connect turn :)
Wee chap gonna be big star 😍👍
Enjoyed the toast bit

Ok. I’m in. I went to the driving range yesterday to test this theory out. NOT comfortable (at first) because I took great pride in my square address. But I cannot deny the results. Flushed...every...damned...ball.
My swing still isn’t pretty but the shots are long and up the middle.
Hi Steve,
Just had a try at this at the range with a 7 iron.
I've tried this open stance and you do feel a tighter turn, only thing is it works better on center ball position. Notice he's not hitting a wood.
Yeah boy 100th comment! Eureka coming to Raleigh, NC baby. LGO!
Hey man! Thanks for the comment!!!
Hi so I tried this out and it’s working pretty well, only thing is I hit it a bit thin. Also do your hips as well as your feet aim left and just your shoulders and club aim at the target? Cheers
Hi Steve,
Its going really well . . . . I won the monthly medal a few days ago and then went out yesterday and shot 4 shots better. I would like to eradicate my bad shot though, which is a low smothered pull hook?
it looks to me you're avoiding early extension
do I need to adjust my grip to compensate for aiming lower body left? looking forward to trying this out. thanks ☺
This sounds great for me at 60 and older players in wieght transfere.
Brilliant guys ! what a double act! lol. How much of you is square at address? just shoulders? thanks Rob
Shoulders square to target, correct?
I think so
The lad has your swing
You can still pull with right arm too
Great!
Steve, are you rotating the club face open on your irons? Thanks.
Where do u live mate? Beautiful place
Found your channel purely by accident, but OMG this sounds so logical I`m off to the Range to give it a try. Quick Question my feet are aiming left, so do my hips and shoulders aim left as well or do they aim down the target line?
Bandit Baker watch my eureka videos for clarity. Feet left, shoulders square 👍
dear Coach .. I have watched this video before and this time, I am still a bit confused still - in the car, you said, ".. have not done much practice due to work, family etc .." & you are on your way to the driving range - aren't you a full-time golf trainer and you do hit balls from your training cabin, right?
It worked brilliantly . . . . then I lost it and can't hit a thing. What happened?
Actually I discovered this on my own but called it my "AHA" moment. lol
How do you address the ball? Do you take your normal square position and then drop your front foot backwards? Do you aim your feet and then square your shoulders? Is there a different ball position?
I found that on the range when I rarely move my feet and hit the same club over and over, that when I take it to the course that I can get out of position slightly when changing clubs in the course of the round.
BTW Well explained!
Address the ball with everything open (left) then close my shoulders to the target line. Ball position is fractionally further back than normal so i am entered slightly ahead of the ball.
blisguy a
So Steve, have you thought more about the Eureka moment?
?
All good found the other stuff on your site!
Cricket, baseball, hockey, even throwing a ball, lead foot open. The geometry of the straight line of arm and club combined with a quiet flat lead wrist. Simple. Now to swing the club instead of hitting the ball.......
A lot of the greatest golfers of all time aimed their feet left of target.
Seems to be this swing is similar to "Channel Lock Swing" one can read about on RUclips.
The key is keeping shoulders square! Shoulders can't be open at address!
Isn't this the swing Mandy Blake wrote 2 books about in the early 1970's? I believe one was called "the Golf Swing of the Future."
Steve you are not aiming left! Your shoulders are square hence the club is aiming towards the target. The feet are open and hence allow your hips to start open. There's a whole lot of stuff out there on an open stance.qv.The Open Stance by John Wright.
David Moody isn’t that what I said ?
I tried this and I sliced farther right Than ever lol
Love the theory Steve looking forward to trying it. Although your feet were aiming left it looked like your shoulders were still square to target , is that correct?Cheers
Absolutely that is what creates the lag and pulling action. The hips are already in a through the ball position and dynamically they pull the shoulder through. Go to the range and aim left of your intended target then square you shoulders up to the target and block it out towards the target. Thats the feeling I had when playing today. I aimed left and hit a push...brilliant results
cheers will do
I have tried this--and I'm still doing it---its incredible how much it has improved my golf
Yes Steve watch Steve Ellington’s video with the Chinese girl and the rubber band same thing he instructs her to do.
Enjoying the videos. Just commenting because you drove past my house! :p
Manfredini kettle on next time!
Steve Johnston PGA I'll be sure to fill up the biscuits tin.
Just like Lee Trevino
Are you going skiing or golfing
You Choose :)
Question: Are the shoulders also aiming to the left (square to your feet) - or are they square to the target? Thanks!
stevenolmstead shoulders square to target👍
Thanks!
Iv solved the swing. I'm trying to put it together in a intelligible way to sell
Hears part 2, ruclips.net/video/JB2txOeY6I4/видео.html
Takeaway is miles inside and you set the club so early, you have no width, no wonder you have no lag. Watch any face on wiew of a great ball striker, they use the motion of the club to hinge it and they start turning before they finish the Backswing. That is where the resistance is coming from. That is how you load the shadft and create lag. Tiger does this the best.
I love your golf videos steve but not impressed with your choice of music or indeed your singing!!! lol
Whats that crap you listen to??? Lol
Like it lessons, but get to the point. Thanks
