How to Stop a Hamster from Biting | Territorial behaviour

  • Hi everyone!
    Kiwi used to bite me really hard, and it was not because she was curious, but because she wanted me out of her cage. That's not the behaviour that I want to see from her so I started training her. In this video I will explain what I did and I added the clips of the training.
    Please keep in mind that I'm not an expert. I learned some methods at school (among other things I learn a lot about pets). It does not make me an expert if I have learned something at school. This was the first time doing this and I made some mistakes. But I hope you can learn from my mistakes :)
    And I'm sorry about my poor English, I'm Dutch and I do not speak English often. And I felt awkward filming this lol. I had to record my voice for an English assignment so I thought, why not make a YT video. I wasn't sure If I would actually upload it on YT because I'm a nervous person. But whatever, life it too short to be nervous about everything.

    I will try this on my hamster, he is a rather bitey hamster I've had him almost 3 weeks, but I respect that and will continue to care for him and give him time to get use to me

      Its always good to give them some time to get used to you, some hammies need a lot of time to settle. Did my method work?

  • @marnpete

    This was really helpful to me! My hammie is territorial and and I tried to look for videos to try and fix this and they are very hard to find. This technique seems legit so I am going to try it on my hamster, I know it may not work on all hamsters but it’s worth a try!

      Yeah thats so weird, I was looking for videos like this too but they didn't help me. I hope this works for your hammy! You can also wear gloves, so the biting will be slightly less painful. And washing your hands and rubbing your hands into the bedding might help as well. Good luck with the training! 😊

      What gloves? I’m just surprised if they bite me once, I’m just curious.. so I hope this video helps me, i don’t really know why my Campbell dwarf hamsters bite my hands, according to google, it’s because they are confuse, threatening, and scared or maybe others… So I’ll try my best to hold them =)

    Ik this was made two years ago but i wanna say this MIGHT work for your hamster. I don’t think it’ll work on mine because of how deep he bites my finger- i might try it with a glove but don’t be bummed if it doesn’t work for your hamster, Every hamster is different!!
    Update: so i tried it with my sleeve to cover my hand and yes he did try to bite my hand, but after like 2 or 3 trys of doing it he got less interested in me. So after that i didn’t use my sleeve, and the first time i did it he was coming up to my hand he hesitated and thought. (Just like in the video) then he ran back in his hide and i removed my hand. I have really high hopes now that he will get more comfortable with me!

    I did this method too for Coco and it worked. In a few days he was no longer biting, then very quickly after that he would sit on my hand eating treats. He would even push his way into my curled up fist and nudge my hand as he loved a good back rub😊👍

    So happy I found your video! My baby (7weeks) acts like this, though less biting. Definitely going to try your method and remove the food aspect.
    Question; I noticed you use a cork based wheel. Do you find it hard to clean? My guy is a wheel doo-dooder so it would be excessive.

    • @supremehammy
      @supremehammy  Год назад

      Its worth trying indeed! Goodluck, you can also use gloves or something for the pain.
      Hahah, wheel doo-dooder, love it! Mine peed and pooped in her cork wheel, it was so bad that I had to get a plastic one and throw away the cork one.. So she was a wheel pee-dooder I guess 😂 But I never had that problem with my other hamsters, so whiping it off with warm water and natural vinegar was enough to get it clean.

      @@supremehammy thanks so much for a speedy reply! I definitely have been thinking about grabbing a pair, he definitely leaves marks but not blood

    Great video! I’m not even sure if my hamster is cage territorial, because I remember the first day I put food on my palm she didn’t bite or nibble me whatsoever. But after a few days she started to nibble my hand after she ate all the food and maybe she thinks my hand is a treat, I don’t know. But usually when she bites me (hasn’t drawn blood yet) I take my hand back a little bit and one time I let my hand sit still in her cage and she bit harder and harder!
    I hope this was sort of understandable 😅, I’d appreciate any help! 🧡

      Ow that sounds horrible! Maybe your vingers tast like his food? Things like the salt from your sweat, cookie you ate earlier or soap can trigger a hamster 😅 So maybe washing your hands with water will help? 😊

    I am trying to use this technique on my hamster, she never used to bite me and now she bites all the time and it makes me very nervous around her. I can't leave my hand in the enclosure ( which is an IKEA DETOLF so it's large enough) she latches on and doesn't let go. She doesn't just walk away :(
    If anyone has any tips it would be very helpful!!

      Oh no I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you can try washing your hands with only water and rubbing your hands in the bedding afterwards, I'm not sure if this will help but you can try. If that doesn't work you can also try thick gloves and than try to do my method. She can't hurt you that much when your wearing gloves.. I hope this helps a bit ❤

    My dwarf bites and I want to try this but he usually draws blood and then keeps biting continuously, and he seems to hate gloves even more than hands. I think I'll only ever be able to handle him in his playpen.
    Also, Kiwi is so cute, I love her coloring!

    • @supremehammy
      @supremehammy  3 года назад +1

      Omg that sounds so horrible.. Unfortunately there are also hamsters that never get used to humans 😔 I call these hamsters "watch hamsters".. When does he bite you? Like when you give him food or just at random moments?

    • @amandaramsay928
      @amandaramsay928 3 года назад +2

      @@supremehammy it's whenever I put my hand in his cage, if I give him a treat he takes it but if I was to lay the treat on my palm he would bite. It's probably because he had a small cage before I got him. In his playpen he doesnt mind being handled and will even want to be picked up.

    • @supremehammy
      @supremehammy  3 года назад +1

      To me, it sounds like territorial behaviour because it only happens in his cage (his territory). Or he confuses your hand with a treat? Have you tried not giving a treat before you place your hand in the cage, even the smell of a treat can trigger a hamster. But maybe he is just a bit traumatized or something because of the small cage he lived in... that would be really sad tho.. 😔

      I'm so sorry to hear that. Is she still doing this? How long do you have her? Because some hamsters do need a lot of time to get used to their owner. Have you tried talking to your hamster before putting your hand in her cage?

      I am too! It hurts a bit but its not the end of the world.
      A hamster can nibble on things to figure out what it is so it is completely normal for them to nibble. But you can try using gloves, maybe then it will be less scary!

      @supremehammy  3 года назад

      Hoii! De kooi is een platsa basiselement van de Ikea, ik hem m zelf omgetoverd naar hamsterkooi. Ze hebben die in verschillende maten maar die van mij is ongeveer 120x55x60cm. Je hoeft er vrij weinig aan te doen; de randen kitten en de gaatjes vullen met aquarium kit, een stevige plaat onder de kooi, deksel maken en eventueel een plexiglas plaat ervoor. Succes! 😊

    • @supremehammy
      @supremehammy  3 года назад

      Ohja, dat is ook nog een optie, welke hamster heb je?
      Ik vind die kooi iets minder geschikt Syrische hamsters omdat het een smalle kooi is, Syrische hamster spullen zijn groter dan die van dwergjes dus dat betekent dat je minder spullen kwijt kan. En je kunt geen dikke laag bodembedekking kwijt (er moeten nog huisjes, loopwiel ect bovenop komen). Maar dit kun je oplossen door een hoge deksel te maken.
      Heb ook gelezen dat de glasplaten na een tijdje loslaten door de druk van de bodembedekking en alle spulletjes die erin staan. Je zou de glasplaten kunnen verstevigen, geen idee of dat helpt.
      Om die redenen ben ik gegaan voor de platsa basiselement 😁 Ik vond het minder gedoe en de kooi is ruimer. Maargoed, allebei de kooien zijn groot 👍🏻
