I was at Petsmart today, and the employee I was speaking with was upset with me because I wanted to buy a tank for a hamster. She felt that a hamster should not be placed in a tank with deep bedding, but a cage so that they get proper ventilation through the sides. She thought I would be a terrible hamster owner for sure. I’m glad that I've been doing proper research by watching your videos.

    • @spencerwagner903

Dang that sucks, I get the ventilation worry but like, if the lid has holes it should be fine. I’m glad mine is people that usually automatically recommend bigger things and tanks- selling fish there suck cuz so many people wanna put five large fish in a ten gallon tank too

Yeah Petsmart has sh*t employees and animal care, I’m surprised there chain business isn’t animal cruelty. Every time I go to a pet store, I always avoid the fish section since they keep betas in these small plastic cups starving and rotting to death ALIVE, I even told an employee once that their betas were dead and he didn’t even give a crap, he just said “hm interesting” ;-;. Not to mention the tanks for the hamsters, they were like 2x by 1x foot, and I saw one constantly itching itself, and one going actually insane from doing the same thing over and over. It’s just sad how humans treat these other species so poorly it shocks me..

I'm quite glad to be a night owl, i get to spend a lot of time with Serana, my rescue syrian hamster,
I never planned to have one, i already have a 2 yr old rescue cat called Ahsoka,
But 3 months ago i was chatting with a friend and the topic got on to a colleague of theirs that was severely neglecting their Syrian,
She was in a tiny cage, 20cm x 35cm, and about 40cm high, the bedding and sawdust etc, hadn't been changed in 4 months, there was no sand bath, the water bottle caked in limescale, every single bar bitten to the point of near destruction,
I felt so bad for the hamster and asked my friend to tell the hamsters owner I'd buy her that day as i just couldn't allow that to happen,
Later that day and £50 poorer (i know, really expensive, the owner didn't want to sell her so my options were report them which could take weeks if ever, for an outcome,
Or to pay an amount they couldn't refuse,
When i saw her in that cage all ragged, cage smelling worse than a cesspool i wanted to give her all the love and care she deserved and definitely needed,
So at this point i knew nothing about hamster's or how to care for them properly and i only had £30 left which was enough to get the basics and a cage which despite being way bigger than what she came in was still not what I'd now consider to be a full term suitable cage,
Within a couple of months and a ton of research (Channels like yours have played a huge part) she has become a very healthy hamster,
Surprisingly she's extremely affectionate, climbs on me, sleeps in my hair at points and does this thing i can only describe as purring but clicking while snuggling up, it sounds cute whatever it is,
Anyway I finally got in a slightly better place financially than i was when i got her and today when i went to pick up more bedding and waxworms (she loves waxworms) and i saw they had a really big cage called 'Hamster Heaven' so i bought it and it took an hour to set up,
I'd heard a few good thing's about it and once i saw her exploring her new home i was like "perfect"
I don't really know why i wrote all that, it's 6am and i need to go to sleep.

I just bought a hamster like a few days ago. And obviously wanted to find a channel on YT to find some information. I'm so happy I found you. My gosh, how many mistakes have been made from the start. I went to the store and asked the store employee to tell me which bedding to buy, which food etc. I just can't believe they would sell all these dangerous or harmful products. I bought wood shavings bedding ( pine), found out it was harmful. I bought a 100% cotton fluff. Luckily if it wasn't for your channel, i would have continued using it. So yeah, now my hammie has a paper based bedding, i gave him some toilet paper for his lil' house. Also bought the best feed mix, with lots of veggies and larvae etc. You taught me sooo soo much about caring for my lil hammie ( a russian dwarfie btw- so cute). You are awesome!!!

I had to learn a lot about owning a hamster through trial and error, so the hamster specific videos I've seen you and others making are super inspiring! Not only will young pet owners have easier access to this information now, but people like myself who have had hamsters in the past but have misexecuted some aspects of their care can learn and grow as well. My current hamster, Valencio, is one of the most difficult I've ever dealt with in terms of temperament and behavior, and it's so easy to compare him to past hamsters I've had, but acknowledging his autonomy and best interests like you underline in your videos has made it much easier to work with him. Having a hamster isn't about me and what I want him to do, but rather about forming a connection and trust with an animal that I would not otherwise be able to in the wild. I really appreciate the message you send out in your videos, thank you for sharing them and your knowledge :^]

It was my first day at my third year in college and I was late for school because I couldn't stop crying about my last and remaining hamster dying too. After almost five years, I finally decided to give myself a chance and take care of a little life again. This time, I plan to do the right things and give my hammy the best life so I won't regret anything when it's time for us to separate. I love how she explains things! She makes it very easy to comprehend and adds a perspective that allows others to understand

I actually recently upgraded my hamsters bin from a 15(?) qt bin to a 50 gallon bin since he managed to escape the old one and when i caught him, i realized he might of been telling me its time for an upgrade. Now I can notice him being a lot happier and more willing to be held, in fact he just gave me kisses a few minutes ago and my heart melted when he did. :(

5:40 That comment hits home. I have parakeets and cats; the cats (usually) don't want anything to do with the birds. However, there was one fatal exception: Ruby.
Ruby was, and still is, our most playful cat, a new addition to the other two. Unfortunately, she didn't understand her strength yet, and when our oldest bird, Abby, ended up outside their cage, Ruby wanted to play with her little friend.
I fully believe Ruby had no intentions of harming her; however, she did-a puncture into the skull.
It was our mistake that ultimately caused Abby's death, and it's a mistake we _won't_ let again. My only hope is that for the ten years we had her, she knew she was loved and cared for.
However, our experience at the emergency vet was the worst we've ever had. They took hours to see her, told us that she'd live, and charged us a ridiculous amount for medications and x-rays when they knew enough to see she wouldn't make it more than a day. On top of that, a nurse there used my stepdad's credit card information to buy concert tickets. It was cruel on so many levels, a slap in the face during a heartwrenching loss.

I've been watching your videos for a while now and it's helped me improve! My hamsters old cages used to be 94 square inches and their new cages are 660 square inches! New they have plenty of floor space, a big enough wheel, sand bath and a deep enough sub straight!!! Thank you so much for the help!

With the “waking them up” category, is it okay to wake them up to clean their cage? I let my hamster (Chinese dwarf hamster) get a lot of sleep.

I would wait until around the time they would wake up or at least later into the night so that they're not being woken up right in the day or the middle of their sleep. For the most part as well hamster's usually can stay in their enclosure while it's being spot cleaned or even partly cleaned.

Hey! I have been watching your videos for the last 3 days I have had my new hamster. Its my first time owning one and I got a female (I think she is) Syrian called Oreo =3 She has a "recommended" sized cage by the pet shop but i will be getting a bin cage soon and my hamster has a balanced diet of nuts, lettuce, vegetables, fruits and seeds and also pellets (Hamster food) I have a wooden chew toy for her and i think she's happy as she has not been climbing the bars or biting them, she has been sleeping during the day and very awake in the afternoon/night. Shes 8 weeks (2 months) old and im trying my best to take care of her. I have just been watching your videos for advice as they're very informative so thank you for educating others like me who have never had hamsters.
