    I see so many say you should give them time. I vehemently disagree, and no one will convince me otherwise. Most hamsters only live for about a year and a half so one thing you do not have an abundance of is time. This is only my second hamster. My first hamster. Hamdini, died on August 28th, she was a sweet soul. My family got me another hamster that night, I named him Janet. He did not want to be held. Initially, I did the whole 'don't force it' thing, then I came to my senses and decided I was picking him up whether he wanted me to or not. Trust me, if I had not done that, he'd still not be allowing me to hold him. It is in no way a good idea to wait and wait and wait when you're gonna have very little time with the hamster as it is. Oh, and by the way...to those who say 'you shouldn't have done that'...'he'll never be comfortable'....it took literal SECONDS from the time I picked him up for him to warm up to me.

    I guess I got lucky, I handled my Syrian from day one when I got her from the pet shop, she doesn't hide from me or bite me at all, she snatched a blue berry from my fingers and spent a lot of time crawling up and down my torso and around my bed. She does get startled still occasionally so I guess it's still a process. She has a fairly small cage so I let her spend as much time as possible outside of the cage and she gets nice treats afterwards and hasn't showed signs of stress or lethargy

    Hii I have a question, we got our hamster a few weeks ago and he doesn't seem to be skittish around me. He'll come up to my hand and sniff me and if my hand is near him he doesn't run away. Sometimes when I put my finger near him he'll sniff, start to lick me then bites and sometimes he bites hard and holds on. Does this mean he's not comfortable with me yet?

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  16 дней назад

      It doesn't sound like he is afraid of you. It could be that he thinks your finger is food. Hamsters will nibble on the skin of our hands when they are young to figure out what it is. If your hands smell like food or some soap that smells edible, like milk or honey this could be the reason. Biting hard and holding on if you are holding him in your hand and forcing him to stay there is a usual situation but if your finger is just close and he does that it's a bit strange. It could be his way of saying to go away. If they bite or nibble too strong I like to say ouch ouch and shake my hand gently until they let go. Then I will not give them treats again and pull out my hand but continue speaking to them. After about 30 seconds I will give another treat and if they nibble strong or bite I will remove my hand and leave them alone. The purpose is to teach them that your hand is a treat or food dispenser and if they bite you will go away. But usually the reason is they think you're food.

I only ever got bitten once and that was because i was trying to wake him up by poking my finger into his house 😁😁😁

And he has a good cage, i dont know if hes a ghost hamster or what, ive tried to puck him up but he always jumps out of my hands and runs away. I dont want to rehome him but i dont know how to fix it, every video i watch about taming a hakster it always says "put a treat in your hand and it will come up" so if anyone has any ideas please say so because i just really want to be able to play with him like i do to my other one.

      Each hamster is different. Some will warm up to you quicker and for some it will take time. Or they can be a ghost hamster. If your hamster is coming out and not staying in all the time then they are not a ghost hamster. They are just scared of you or don't like being touched. I would advise against trying to pick him up because it would additionally scare him. Do your hamsters live together or do they have separate enclosures?

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  7 месяцев назад +1

      Unfortunately, even though it may look like at first glance that they are enjoying it, the reason they run around in it is because they are trying to find a way out of it. Hamsters have really bad eyesight and the ball makes it even harder because not only does it make seeing hard, it also blocks out smells. Hamsters use smells to navigate their environment so the hamster is disoriented and stressed. They are not really getting any benefit or enrichment since they are not actually exploring their environment, they are just stuck in the ball. Because they can't come out when they want they are also forced to pee in it if they need to pee so they are stepping all over their pee and breathing in the smell and ammonia. Even without the pee the ventilation is already really bad in a hamster ball, especially for a hamster that is running. There isn't a lot of oxygen. Another thing that happens often is that a hamster's foot gets stuck in on of the ventilation holes and breaks their finger or ankle. 😢 I know pet shops recommend them a lot but unfortunately they are not good at all. You can always put a wheel on the floor when letting your hamster out or put different substrates or boredom breakers for them to play with.

      You can try dimming the lights in the room a few hours before they usually go out. If after a week or two of that they don't start coming out earlier you can turning off all lights and using only a red light. But keep in mind that they are not supposed to be on for the whole night or for long periods of time. Use them for an hour or two at most. • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  6 месяцев назад

      Hello 😊 What you can try is use gloves in the beginning when you try to handle her to protect your hands. You can also still use the trick with toilet paper to rub on your hands to make it smell like you and use longer treats to tame them (they will still feel your smell because their sense of smell is good). Would you like to be able to handle her in the future or would prefer not to? If you are scared and don't want to that's ok too, you can use a mug or a hideout to move them to the playpen or the transporter if needed. However, it is useful to be able to handle them at little for health check ups or if you need to treat them for something.

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  10 месяцев назад +1

      That's a hard question since each species has things that make them easier or harder to care for. Each hamster will also have their own unique personality. The only one I wouldn't recommend for a beginner is a robo because they are lightning fast and would be hard to handle for an inexperienced person. Hybrid dwarfs and syrians are a bit calmer. Dwarfs are really small and gentle so it might be harder to do health checks. Since syrians are bigger that would be easier. However, it's good to keep in mind that female syrian hamsters might require more space than both genders of other species of hamsters and if they are unhappy with the space they will try to escape. The bare cage minimum for all species of hamsters I recommend is 100x50cm but female syrians will commonly need more than that so it is important to consider the space you have. I don't have any clear opinion abut chinese hamsters so I won't comment on them. I guess if I had to choose, I would choose a male syrian or hybrid dwarf (male or female) for a complete beginner.

      Yeah, that would make it much harder. Some hams will not pay too much attention to food if they feel unsafe. That's why making them feel safe and not chasing them is important. Once they relax and feel more confident in their new home they will be more likely to take food. You would just neet to be patient because with a hamster like this taming will take longer.

    Does anyone have advice? I have had my Syrian for almost 3 months and I attempt to interact with her daily but she is constantly hiding and only comes out during the evening if I am far away from her . I have tried every method and she has a very large cage with plenty of entertainment and enrichment, I don’t know what to do to make her more comfortable.

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  13 дней назад +1

      Does she come out only when the light is off? It sounds like you might have a ghost hamster. A ghost hamster is a hamster that goes out only during the night when no one is close to the cage and it is quiet. This type of hamster is hard to see, let alone tame. What I would recommend is to crowd the cage as much as possible by putting a lot of stuff in it, it doesn't have to be anything fancy, you can make them from cardboard. It can be just boxes with holes on them on different sides and just put them over your normal setup. It will create dark spaces. The point is to make the hamster feel safe to come out. If you are not scatter feeding already, make sure to do that. Just throw the food around the cage instead of using a dish. You can put high value food like mealworms or sunflowerseeds in a boredom breaker and attach it to something so your hamster can take the whole thing to their burrow. Something that you can also try is using a red light. Hamsters don't see it well so if you use it a bit before you go to sleep your hamster might come out and you'll be able to see them. It's important not to start talking to your hamster the moment they come out. You want to get them used to coming out first and later when it becomes normal to them you can start speaking to them and giving them treats. You can watch this video to learn more about using a red light. ruclips.net/video/MxuCsrGj4ZY/видео.html

      Thank you for upgrading your hamster's cage and adding things they need. Good job! 😊 Hamsters can be pretty timid in general, especially if they were frightened multiple times. Changing the cage, can also be stressful so they will need some time to relax. What is important to do is to show your hamster that they can trust you by giving them space and not forcing them to do things they don't want. Try to show them that you are harmless and useful to them. Show them that you are the one giving them food and paper tissues. Make sure to talk a lot in a gentle voice when scattering food around the cage. I also like to drop the food on harder items in the cage like wood or terracotta so that the food falling makes noise they will connect with my voice. In general, the advice in the video doesn't apply to only your first interactions but also when your hamster becomes timid for some other reason like a scary experience, a trip to the vet, having to handle them to treat them and so on. The most important point is to gain their trust back.

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  5 месяцев назад +2

      Did he seem scared or did he try to run away? If he got scared then it might take longer to tame him. If he is coming to you just let him come and offer food without pressuring him too much. Try not to make too much noise and try not to interact as soon as he comes out, let him explore a bit. He needs to know he is free to explore without being disturbed every time. Even though he didn't have some time to himself in the beginning the rest of the advice from the video still applies so make sure to continue doing those things. 😊

      It's best to first let her get used to being in your hand and once she's been ok with it multiple times, in stead of moving her up try moving her to the side slowly. It will be less scary to her. You can even make it better by moving her to something delicious that you are holding with your other hand. And you can do the same when you eventually start moving her up. Move her short distances in the beginning and not too high up because she could jump and hurt herself.

    How do you clean that up😨

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  Год назад +1

      It's pretty easy. You don't clean out everything. How you clean depends on your hamster's habits. Most hamsters pee in their sand bath and on the wheel and around it. They will also pee where they sleep. You regularly do spot cleaning where you remove only the soiled bedding, sift the sand and wipe or wash the wheel. If your hamster pees mostly in their tunnels in the bedding then you need to do some digging. It's harder in the beginning until you figure out your hamsters habits but later you know where too look. If your hamster doesn't pee much in the bedding you clean that part less often. I do spot cleaning every 5-7 days but then every 2 months you are supposed to do a deeper cleaning where you switch out one third of the bedding. Here is me cleaning my hamster's cage for the first time after I got her. I had to do some digging in case she pees in the bedding. ruclips.net/video/U-OA2bDmGQI/видео.html

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  7 месяцев назад

      Yes! It would work on any species of domesticated hamsters but it will depend on every individual hamster how long it takes to tame them. One think I want to point out that teddy bear and fancy hamsters are not really a breed of hamsters. It's just something pet stores invented to promote them more successfully. They are both Syrian hamsters.

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  10 месяцев назад +3

      Don't worry, it's not destroyed. Just observe your hamster's behavior. If they are coming to your hand you can give them food and treats and take it slow from there. But if they are scared and running away you should give them some space and start the process from the beginning by following the steps I described. If they are scared it will of course take longer so have patience with them. They don't know you and you are much bigger than them so you need to be gentle. 😊

    • @MyCuteHamster00
      @MyCuteHamster00  3 месяца назад +1

      @@R1R1S_R0BL0X How long ago did you get them? In the first few days it is common for hamsters not to take the food that is offered. They have cheek pouches where they usually keep some food at all times. In the first few days they might be scared of their new environment so they will eat the food that is already in their cheek pouches. Once they run out they start taking the food you give them, especially when you are out or sleeping. If you've had your hamster for a while and they've suddenly stopped eating then there is a health issue or teeth problems and they need to see a vet.

      They don't eat the toilet paper, the just put it in their cheek pouches and take it out later to make a soft and comfy nest. Even if they somehow injest a bit it would not cause them any harm. 😊
