Longhaired Cat, Willow needed a thorough groom over today as her coat had become very thick and had started to matt in places. Underneath to remove the matts, we opted for a belly clip. In time this will grow back, but for now during the warmer months, she will be glad of all that fur being removed to keep her a little cooler.
Our longhaired cats do take a lot of looking after, but if you make it a habit every day for just a few minutes, then it will save your cat from getting matted.

Willow needs to be brushed by owner every day to keep mats away. Bless her heart!
We have a beautiful 3 yr old kitty who is partly Maine coon, and she has very beautiful, very long fur that used to get matted. We've found that with a steady supply of Treats, she will let us pick at the mats with a fine-pointed device, and actually tease out the mats close to her skin. After that, we brush her, even down by her tail root - as long as the Treats hold out, but it works nicely.
Cute cat. Lots of adorable pleading squeaks before she's had enough at 5:15 and growls trying to escape. Impressed that you had managed to calme her down within 30 seconds. Surprised she didn't scratch or bite when she came back to the boil later on.
Interesting point you made at the end about owners being conditioned by their cats to stop brushing when a growl starts. In my case, I expect scratching or biting if I do not heed that warning.
I need to get a pair of gloves like yours. Where do they sell them?

My kitty bear has matts in his back legs every summer but I managed to get them out last year with brush
Norwegian Forest Cat, even down to wearing their most common brown tabby and white coloring. I had one that was a pure white boy that I miss terribly.
I only used a comb on him and my other cats; brushes just seemed to make the matting worse. The trick for a stubborn mat is to tease it apart as much as you can with your fingers then turn the comb sideways and work the mat apart from the tip to the root.

Mine gets those horrible Matt’s around her private and some on her luscious extremely thick tail!
I’m constantly brushing her as well as using wet ones for cats around her butt she hate for her tail to be touched! She knows how beautiful it is help how to avoid
Oh happy belated birthday Nena for the 19th September. I am way behind on following up with my comments! I hope she had a super birthday.
So for the tail, you certainly do not want to over groom it and thin it out because you want her to keep her beautiful tail in tact.
So it is a case of a gentle groom through with the comb, making sure the comb gets to the root of the fur so you don't miss any of the little matts. Because, we all know, a little matt can become a huge matt within days.
I know you said she hates for you to touch it, so just stay consistent and make sure you groom it daily even if only for a few minutes. Then this will become part of her routine over time and she shouldn't react.
When you go to groom the tail, hold the root of fur with your thumb on one hand whilst you comb with the other hand because you don't want to pull at the fur. You want to be gentle.
Always imagine what it would be like if someone pulled your hair with a comb if it was matted. It would hurt.
But, if someone held the root of your hair and then combed gently. it wouldn't so much of an ordeal.
