      I hear you.... It is reminded me of situation a few ears ago. I had to shave my long hair before head surgery... Shame, uncomfortablness, unusual cold and even slight wind that you feel now...
      I had to do it for health reasons!
      Cat must be shaved for a health reasons! Do you think mine and his feelings are different?
      The only difference is that I could and did buy a couple wigs and gorgeous head covers. What about this cat? Sometimes we have to remember that pets do have hearts, souls. They feel yours and express their own emotions. They have ability to LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY!

      Right. I get it, cats have a time limit but she needs to keep her cool. The cat can read her nervousness especially when she starts raising her voice when kitty starts moving. The cat was pretty good for the most part, but the groomer kept being nervous. She may have had bad experiences, but she shouldn’t project her fears into every cat she grooms.

    Being a retired groomer, I can see your care for this kitty. Considering how matted she was, you did an amazing job. A groomers job is not an easy one, it's often back breaking and thankless. It's a high risk occupation, where injuries are common - bites, scratches etc.
    For those who find this video distressing, may I just say that there is an obvious difference between knots and mats. Mats are actually painful for the kitty, even if it wasn't shaved. Mats can turn an otherwise happy cat into a grump, purely because of the pain they are in, then add in the factor that a stranger is shaving them to help them out of their pain and you have what looks distressing (and to a degree it is), but it's for the benefit of the cat. Often times their old, happy personality returns - once the pain from the matted fur is gone. They can move freely, their appetite returns (if it was affected) and they genuinely will be grateful - head boops, purring and smoochies. I hope this helps to better understand. Have an inspired day. 😻🐾

    I worked for a short time in the kennel area of a vet's office, and we had a groomer that used the facilities, but he didn't take cats-said they were too hard. We had a client bring in a cat that was extremely matted; the vet staff were going to use general anesthesia to do the shave down, until they realized that her age/health made this impossible due to risk of her not waking up at all. The vet staff told the owner what was going on, and let them know that they would do their best without sedation, but couldn't guarantee anything. I was working a 6am-6pm shift that day, and volunteered to take her on. I ended up working on her in tiny sections over the entire day, but I was able to clip out the very worst mats, and cut through, and comb out everything else. She came in hardly able to walk, but when she went home, she wouldn't have won any beauty contests, but she was fairly even, and most important, comfortable!!

    Past veterinarian's assistant here.
    I always hated when I needed to groom cats because whenever they made it to our clinic, that meant their condition was so terrible that sedation would be a requirement. Often times, antibiotics and other medications would also be required due to skin infections/damage from the matting.
    I can think of only one cat that I managed to do without sedation. This poor kitty had been essentially dumped on a neighbour and had likely never been groomed in her entire 17 years of life. This darling old lady was an absolute gem and simply allowed me to shave off her softball-sized mats. Words cannot describe how happy I was not to need sedation and that neither the cat nor I were injured.
    You and your team did an excellent job of this kitty. Shaving a cat is not for beauty, it's for health.

    I hate the 1.6k people that disliked this video, thinking they're being righteous and thinking they're taking a stand against "animal cruelty" or whatever bs they come up with for this.
    Like, no. Animal cruelty would be NOT doing anything. Like, what the hell do you expect them to do? Put the cat in *actual* danger by putting the cat to sleep first, while also adding quite a hefty number to a bill that's already high enough?
    The scruff is not hurting the cat. Go ahead and try it on yourself, just two or three fingers, using the side of your thumb. It looks like they use their whole fist, but they're not. The cat is very fluffy, a lot of what they're holding is fur and not skin. Now try pressing hard enough to the point where it hurts. You have to press pretty hard to get there, and even then, it doesn't hurt much. Now imagine if you had a lot more skin to grab so it's not so tight. Then it REALLY wouldn't hurt. The scruff is to prevent the cat from not only hurting the groomer or owners, but also itself. So with the scruff explained, the only thing they could try to argue is that maybe they shouldn't shave the cat at all, and that would obviously be a horrible thing to make the cat go through, because the pain is gonna stay on them constantly, while being groomed only hurts for a while and then they're free from a huge amount of pain. I think it's so stupid and ridiculous that those 1.6k think it'd be better to do something OTHER than what was done in this video.

    • @zagan1
      @zagan1 6 лет назад +10

      When you hold onto the neck like a mother cat does, a cat clams up and will do nothing. at the 12 min mark the guy isn't holding the neck right so the cat becomes free then at 13 min mark he holds the cat's neck again so it stops everything.
      mother cats reef their kittens around the same way sometimes more rougher than this guy lol

    • @Pagan_Heart
      @Pagan_Heart 6 лет назад +9

      Absolutely!! It was very good of them to adopt her. I adopted a cat so very like this & had to have him shaved at the vets when we first rescued him. He was badly matted, covered in sores & terribly thin. When I had him neutered & chipped etc I asked the vet to whizz him over with the clippers while under anaesthesia & since that time have maintained his coat by regular grooming. His summer coat is fine & light but every winter it grows to at least 6 times the fur he has in the summer, which means I HAVE to comb him through almost every day. I've been kind, patient & persistent but now, even 5 years later, he still hates it with a passion... I always give him treats following a groom & during light coat times, he's happy for me to quickly go over his head, chest & back but never the tummy, breeches & tail!!! I cannot ever risk leaving him otherwise he would get very very matted, dirty & sore. Thankfully I've never had that happen since I adopted him but it takes great dedication to have a cat like this & you can't afford to ever leave them, not even for a week!!! There's never any telling when he'll come home with a bramble attached & wherever he goes or sleeps at home there's always a pile of twigs, leaves & maybe the odd slug that he's picked out of his coat!! So no holidays for me during winter months when The Bear needs grooming he needs grooming & only I will do it... I'd really advise people to seriously consider this when adopting a cat - you have to be prepared to do this or (if you can actually find anyone) pay to have it done. It requires not only great patience & dedication along with lots of love & care but, as you've seen here, no little amount of bravery!!

      My cat was found under a grease dumpster almost fully matted up. The poor thing was almost fully shaven when I adopted her. She recovered fully and is still very skittish (I think she had a hard life) but one of the kindest cats I've had. She's older (unknown but probably 4-6 years old at adoption) but fits my laid back personality much better than any kitten could. I don't know what I will do when she passes. :(

    Just a note to the person who was doing the grooming, I used to work on a VERY matted kitty like this - try and stay away from using S-words, as it's a hissing noise. So saying "SSSSo SSSSorry", is not as soothing as a soft "mmmmhmm". Cats comfort each other with small chest noises. It's much more calming to keep your only comments to either "mmmhmm" or "I know."

    A seam ripper (used for ripping out seams in a garment you are sewing and need to take the seam out and start over) works much better in place of a pair of scissors. You can go to your local fabric store and ask for it. I hold the mat and always keep my fingers in the way of the seam ripper because if it slips by accident, my finger will get poked and not the cat. I have never poked myself or the cat. The seam ripper will get into the mat every single time. A pair of scissors will not. Hold the mat the whole time you're getting in there with the ripper. Work upward through the mat and never toward the direction of the cat's skin. You did a good job! The poor kitty was so miserable with those mats.

    I'm not a fan of shaving cats, but I absolutely know that when a cat is this matted, there is no alternative better for the cat than to get all of that matted hair off of them. And I think Dede does a great job at this. For a "regular" cat grooming session - with a bath and no mats.....just normal combing/brushing, etc., I think the groomer should go much slower and talk much more slowly and softly. BUT, this is not that ideal case! Dede has to get in there and do damage control as quickly as possible, with as little pain to the cat. And she did that. She has the tools that I would use.....the "poodle comb" (blue with silver combs) is excellent for long-haired cats.....and having two other people helping to hold the cat is extremely smart. And oh my goodness, this cat is one sweet and patient girl. I can't imagine how much pain she must have been in. Dede is absolutely correct in telling us that a cat's skin is like Saran Wrap.....their skin cannot take the pressure of having mats for long without damage to their coat and skin. Well done, Dede! I am so glad that this beautiful cat has new owners that will take care of her and will hopefully give her a fur-ever home with a mat-free coat!

    Eleanor is doing amazing! 😍 although she was pretty upset in the video. She was immediately happy after.
    We were worried it might be traumatic since she had only been home a couple days. But the moment she got home from being groomed she has been out and about. Before the grooming she was hiding behind the couch. She hasn’t hid once since the grooming. Her favorite place to be now is on the couch with the kids; especially while they’re on their video games. Or on the foot of my sons bottom bunk bed.
    She was eating but only if we put the food in front of her before the grooming. Now about 5:30 am she is at my bedroom demanding breakfast.
    She went from a cute little grumpy cat- to a constant smile. Her personality has really bloomed. We knew she was a sweet baby; but she is just so loving.
    After this experience I have so much more respect for groomers (my mothers best friend is one and I had heard stories- but never witnessed it). I have also been singing praises about my favorite groomer.
    Also after reading a couple comments. My husband grew up on land in east Texas he’s good with animals in all kinds of situations. We did pregame with Dede. We knew we would probably have to help and we wanted to make sure Eleanor was safe. Dede surpassed our expectations.

      L L not all shelters have the money to get cats in this condition groomed :/ matted dogs are easier to groom, even for someone with very limited or no experience, as their skin poses no real issue in comparison. I do agree though, they really should take care of the mats when they come in, I think it’s just a fear thing (they don’t want to do it themselves and mess up) and a money thing (cat groomers are expensive)

    I`m just about retired now but if I could just offer a little something to the mix....I always asked owners to bring in an old cushion and then a good part of that clip can be made easier with the cat on the cushion with his/her nails digging down, they seem to feel safer in that position. If you have someone just hold the back of the neck you can move the cat about and get quite a bit done without them losing their temper.I think it`s something you would have to try rather than me explain. Brilliant job.

    We usually put cats under general anesthesia, especially if they're this severly matted. Groomers in a salon often won't touch these cats, so clients need to find vets who'll do it while the cat is sleeping. As a vet tech I know very very well how dangerous a cat can be and I salute you for daring to groom her while awake. Someone was definately not amused.

    Those electric clippers frequently get really hot after about 3 minutes. It’s the metal end/tip that gets hot. Note the cat flinched mostly when the FLAT side of the clipper end/tip was flush with its skin - because that’s a lot of HEAT! Have a few clippers on hand. Switch out the clippers used every 3-4 minutes, so that the end/tip never gets hot.

It took almost an hour to get all of that hair off, but he must have felt so much better after getting out of it.

    I have a long haired domestic. She has always let me brush her so mats haven't really been a problem. Until recently because she's getting old and i think she can't comfortably move herself to groom. I called a groomer and they said if she's never been to a groomer she may have a heartattack from the stress. So i got out my Wahl hair clipper, expecting a fight, but she was soooo good. But only in short bursts. It took me 3 days to get it all of it but she's mat free! Looks a little weird cuz i only shaved spots but still ok.

    Great job Sweet kitty. Admire anyone who has the guts to groom a cat. No injuries, no foul.
