Welcome to Funny Mental Lives, a conversation on mental health. It's an open, interesting and fun conversation with people who have lived with a mental health condition into recovery.
My recovery came with no prescriptions, nor professionals, I dabbled but it wasn't for me. When I took on my recovery I thought about how much time and effort we put into sports and hobbies and careers, yet we put such little time into our mental health. So I decided to make my recovery a full time job, I decided to take it on like I was training for the Olympics. I'm not going to turn up on the day of the event and expect to be great, I'm going to train my bloody arse off. Many many tears were shed, brutal honesty was had till I finally realised there was no need to think like a completely different person, in fact, it was impossible to do so. All I had to do was tweak what I already knew by finding a different perspective eg. I had an abusive childhood , I was beaten at home and bullied at school, the bullies are long gone but the effects it had are not. I chose to focus on the abuse at home because that is still prevalent. I thought to myself 'how would I feel as an adult if the answer to my problems was to beat children? I thought I would not respect myself at all, I would think I were pathetic and weak, I would not like myself. This took away so much of the power the abuse had over me still. I did not do it to go to my father and tell him he's pathetic, I did it for myself to see the abuse from a different angle. I realised, I am not the weak one....
