  • Ms Valerie Liu was in her mid-20s when she first started hearing voices in her head and felt that people were conspiring against her. "I felt lost, helpless, hopeless, and very scared," she says. When she was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2007, she hid in her room for days. "I didn't dare to go out to do even simple things like have a meal," she says. But her mother, Ms Cindy Tan, was always there for her as Valerie went through what she considers to be the toughest time of her life. Today, Valerie is in a much better place, thanks to medication, self-care and unwavering support from her mother. She and Cindy are now working at Caregiver Alliance Limited (CAL), where they use their experience to help individuals with mental health conditions and their loved ones in their recovery journey.
