Sabaton - Ruina Imperii (Lyrics Svenska & English)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 дек 2012
- After the sudden death of King Charles XII in Norway it fell on Lieutenant General Carl Gustaf Armfeldt to lead the remaining 5800 soldiers back to Sweden. When they tried to cross the mountain Öjfjället the army was caught by a blizzard. In this disaster, known as the "Carolean Death March" (Karolinernas dödsmarsch), 3700 men froze to death.
"The Great Northern War is over. And thus ends Sweden's era of just over one hundred years as a great power in Europe, never to return." (from the Carolus Rex liner notes)
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)

Fun fact: Joakim said that they couldn't do a english version because the song only worked in swedish and didnt have that emotional feel in english.
yeah it really doesn't. It sounds like a messenger at the front telling his men to march then when he gets home alerting everyone the flag is metaphorically burning
@@kriegenjoyer6913I think it can work, I've read the lyrics on point with the Swedish voice, and I think it has the same emotional value, I think to get what you described or how Joakim's voice needs to be us how he sang In The Army Now, which has the same march voice.
It was also so you had to learn Swedish to understand it
@@DarkViperCA i am born in Sweden, so I fully understand both the english and swedish versions, but I most prefer the swedish version, I find it more powerful than rhe english.
Damn, Sweden really did fall, ask Duolingo
I dunno. I find it fitting that there's only a Swedish version. It's almost like this song is too personal to be sung in another language. It's about shame and the death of a dream. As if these words shouldn't be said in a foreign tongue because it's a shame that Swedish people bear alone.
The Urizen Tbh all Europeans share the shame of seeing our empires fall after so many were sacrificed in its name. All the suffering and pain, never again shall we be as we were.
Which puts me in an endless physical and psychological pain, every single day of my life. Especially, considering how Poland looked like 400 years ago.
The Urizen the Germans in both world wars probably felt this.
The Epirotes under Pyrrhus probably felt this.
The Macedonians under Alexander probably felt this. (In fact, the men were so attached to Alexander and his family that they almost mutinied at the idea of harming his mother).
The Assyrians when they were crushed by their enemies probably felt this.
The Carthaginian men under Hannibal probably felt this.
These moments happen.

It is fascinating how many incredibly skilled field marshals/generals Sweden had during the great power era. Some examples:
Carl Gustaf Wrangel - The unimaginably rich commander.
Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld - Sweden's equivalent to Hannibal.
Lennart Torstenson - The master of the artillery and the leader who set the Czech Republic and Denmark in flames.
Johan Banér - "Pray, little child, pray because tomorrow the Swede will come." German parents told their children before the obvious successor to Gustavus Adolphus set fire to their city.
Torsten Stålhandske - The king's loyal and ruthless cavalry expert.

Evpaty kolovrat as well though he wasn't a winged hussar. If you don't know about him, a quick read will make you weep. He and his men attacked the army that destroyed their city and all fought to the death. They were few in numbers but massacred the entire rear guard of the enemy and kept going without a care for themselves. Evpaty kolovrat apparently cleaved some enemies in two, and the Khan was so impressed that he sent his body back to Ryazan after he was killed.

@Chris Ryker Lol true enough. Ill fix it.
now you gave me the idea that would be cool sabaton make an entire album about Napoleon
@@theobarretoteles4206 Would be cool if they pulled it off, but I don't think a Swedish rock/metal band has the right emotional connection to Napoleon or the Napoleonic Wars. They do have a connection to Swedish history because it's _their_ history. WW1 and 2, and more modern wars, are conflicts that almost everyone has some connection to, either personal or from their (grand)parents. People are also more able to invest into songs about wars or battles that shaped their country, like Battle of Bannockburn, or songs about heavily mythologized topics, like 300, Shiroyama and Swedish Pagans. The Napoleonic Wars has almost none of this. Sweden was no major player and I'm not sure if it participated at all. No one is alive from the period, or has been for at least 80 years. The countries that came out of the Napoleonic Wars have since then transformed so much that the impact of the wars is not really all that noticeable anymore. Personally I also feel like the style of Sabaton doesn't really fit the Napoleonic Era, but that's very much because of my view of warfare of that time (which is of sunny, slightly clouded picturesque grasslands with toy soldiers and classical music). The era doesn't seem metal.
But hey, if they do do it and it's good, I'm all for it.
@@danielblom391 Not sure if it had active participation in the Napoleonic Wars, but Sweden did lose what is now Finland to Russia at the end of the war. (Well, I believe they lost parts of Finland before that, but not the peninsular part). They might have been allied with Napoleon or just unlucky to be partitioned, because, why not?!
Also, that era does not sound metal? CHAIKOVSKY WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO HIS CANNONS.

When you hear this song right after Carolus Rex man the sadness
Big sad
Like suture rising...
man, that dude died in song three(!)
Yes you right
This song likely comes after "Long Live the King" though, as that song is about the death of king Charles XII, also known as Carolus Rex. So it would go like this:
Carolus Rex -> Long Live the King/Konungens Likfärd -> Ruina Imperii
Well, I looked up the album and found the correct order of the songs.
1. Dominium maris Baltici
2. The Lion from the North
3. Gott Mitt Uns
4. A Lifetime of War
5. 1648
6. The Carolean's Prayer
7. Carolus Rex
8. Killing Ground
9. Poltava
10. Long Live the King
11. Ruina Imperii
My thoughts that Long Live the King and Ruina Imperii were the last two songs in this saga were correct, though.
The power of this song is so... raw. Somehow angry, melancholic and furiously sad (especially the "Aldrig, aldrig, aldrig atervända"). This song has truly a specific mood and tone to it.

From the translations and the tone, it sounds like as if it were composed by a surviving soldier, who knew that his country would fall in its power, and knew why; that it had died with their last king.

This song has so much passion in it, it draws such sadness, sorrow, contempt, you can feel it in the voice. Even if you don't understand swedish you can still feel the tragedy in it. You know this song is from the heart. Sabaton should be a national treasure just for this one. They always make you feel not just patriotic for another country, but feel their struggle as well. That's why metal like this is superior to any other kind of music, it awakens so much emotion within people, it's not just the music (which is great as far as instruments and voice) but the message is expressed in such a passionate way.

Interesting fact. Napoleon knew well about the fate of the Swedish army and learnt the following lesson: if you don't find a good refuge for winter in Russia, your army is doomed. Therefore he thought that he could avoid disaster by taking shelter in Moscow before winter got lethal.
But though he managed to reach the city in september, general Rostoptchine had removed all supplies and "mysterious" fires started to burn thousands of homes after the city's capture. With no shelter nor food and with tsar Alexander refusing to stop fighting, the French army retreated in October, too late to escape from the cold.

Despite being a song about defeat it has a lot of power and pride in it
Of course. A true warrior takes pride in victory or defeat because they know they gave their all. And a true warrior respects his vanquished enemy for the same reason. Violence is terrible, but honour is not, and the difference between a warrior and a brute is that both have violence, but a warrior has honour too.
