    Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632), also known by his Latinized name "Gustavus Adolphus Magnus" was King of Sweden from 1611 until his death. With the aid of his Lord High Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna, he successfully fought wars against Denmark, Russia and Poland. In 1628 he intervened in the Thirty Years War on the Protestant side. The year 1631 saw him bring the Catholic imperial army to a bitter defeat at Breitenfeld near Leipzig, thus turning the tide of the war. In Nuremberg, Gustav Adolf opposed the imperial generalissimo Wallenstein for the first time. After the indecisive battle, Wallenstein moved north to avoid further conflict, but was followed and in November of 1632 the Battle of Lützen took place. Gustavus Adolphus was killed while leading a cavalry charge.
    German Protestants soon idealized the king as their heroic savior and he became known by the names "Der Löwe aus Mitternacht" (The Lion of Midnight) and "The Lion of the North".
    The name of the intro "Dominium Maris Baltici" is the Latin name of Gustav Adolf's primary aim, the dominion of the Baltic Sea.
    Swedish version: • Sabaton - Lejonet Från...
    CAUTION!
    I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
    "No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)

    ----------
    Gustav II.
    ACHTUNG!
    Ich dulde keine rassistischen, diskriminierenden oder in sonstiger Form unangemessene Kommentare! Dieses Lied verherrlicht weder Krieg, noch den Nationalsozialismus, sondern ist rein historisch zu betrachten!
    "Nein, wir verherrlichen nichts, wir erzählen nur Geschichten über Dinge, die passiert sind." (Rikard Sundén, Gründungsmitglied von Sabaton)

    What's interesting about Thirty Years' War is that it was religious one - Protestant north vs. Catholic south, but Protestants' biggest ally and supporter was Catholic France.

    • @Balagergo
      @Balagergo 10 лет назад +392

      Well, in France there was Gallicanism, which meant that technically the Pope was the head of the church, but the French king controlled all the religious routines, such as investiture, church taxation, etc. In other words, France had no religious motivatiuon in supporting the Protestants, instead, they just used the conflict to gain advantages against the Habsburg dynasty.

    • @altrias2455
      @altrias2455 10 лет назад +145

      Balagergo indeed, back then the HRE was still the major force of europe, or at least one of the three major powers with France and England, but since France was just coming out from its own religious wars, with the Edict of Nantes, it was a tad bit weakened, so when they saw the opportunity the 30 years war to weaken the Habsburg even more, they left religion in the lockers and helped the protestants. As a result, France then became the major power of Europe for the following century.

    • @niggeling5741
      @niggeling5741 10 лет назад +70

      It stopped being a religious war when France joined the war on Sweden's side. Cardinal Richelieu has always wanted to bring an end to the Habsburg reign even though both parties were catholic. Plus the mightiest and most competent commander in the whole war, Albrecht von Wallenstein (served Kaiser Ferdinand II) had lots of protestant officers in his army.

      leader of the rebellion Jaakko Ilkka's limbs were broken with a club, his arms and legs were cut off and finally his head, and his body was placed on a wheel on top of a pole as a reminder to others not to resist the swedish oppressors.
      the swedish even went to the point to ban our language from being spoken, the reason why anyone who thought better of them selves learned to speak swedish and especially everyone who was even slightly wealthier spoke swedish even after we gained independence from russia.

    "The Father of Modern War, Gustavus Adolphus almost certainly was not. But he may very well have been the Father of the Modern World. Because then, at that place, at the moment when the Saxons broke and the Inquisition bade fair to triumph over all of Europe, the king of Sweden stood his ground and proved, once again, that the truth of history is always concrete. At that instant, history pivoted on the soul of one man. His name was Gustavus Adolphus, and there were those among his followers who thought him the only monarch in Europe worthy of the name. They were right, and the man was about to prove it. For one of the few times in human history, royalty was not a lie.
    Two centuries later, long after the concrete set and the truth was obvious to all, a monument would be erected on that field. The passing years, through the bickering and the debates, had settled the meaning of Breitenfeld. The phrase on the monument simply read: freedom of belief for all the world.
    Whatever else he was or was not, Gustavus Adolphus will always be at Breitenfeld. He stands on that field for eternity, just as he did on that day. September 17, 1631.
    _Breitenfeld. Always Breitenfeld._ " --Eric Flint, _1632_

      let me know when you guys on the other side of the Atlantic are free... aka when private citizens can be armed. Do realized most of Europe is a military state and you have privileges not rights. There is talk of revolt with any groups in the US due to rights being eroded but we still are the freest country in the world but protect what you have. Give them an inch they take a mile. And don't think I'm going against you everyone wants to stay free we are all in the same fight.

    Probably Sabaton's greatest song in my opinion. The imagery and story telling of this song is absolutely pristine.
    There's several references to pop culture, three different languages are sung (in the english version alone)...the song is just completely excellent.
    They also manage to capture the horror of war and the uplifting feeling the Protestants must have had at the time (something they do very well with most of there songs)
    One of the best power metal songs every in my opinion.
