Thank you for this setup video, it's solved two issues that I was dealing with with my Ironman 4x4 XTR 71 which is essentially the identical 270 awning. First, I don't have a roof rack but I do have a bed rack. The only tie down point I have to hold the awning out tends to be a little low and so it's a great idea to extend that leg! Second, are the lag bolt stakes that you used. I will be checking out your affiliate link for those. It's a great idea! See, this is exactly why I watch numerous of these videos even when they're 8 months old, you almost always learn something you didn't know 👍🏼 Thanks again 🤙🏼
Just ordered one...was going back and forth on the Roam Adventure 270 but Tuff Stuff is offering 25% off right now so it was hard to pass it up. Savings of almost $200. I seen you switched up so I wasn't sure if you had issues or not but from your review it seems to be pretty decent...especially for the price right now. Thanks for review!
That’s a good deal! This is a good awning, we’re very happy with it. I did change the Jeep setup a bit and went with a Taruca awning on that. Nothing wrong with the Tuff Stuff awning and that is on our LR3 now.
That's a great deal! :O We used the standard T-brackets included with the awning, along with Rhino-Rack bolts to attach it to the rack. Every rack with be slightly different though. On our Jeep we have a Gobi rack and are using the Gobi awning brackets. Good idea to do a few shorts on how we attach these items with our setups
Nice! You’ll love it. I have 4 rooftop tents now and don’t need them all LOL. I also need to switch back to a traditional passenger opening tent for my new setup with the 270 awning.
The awning has loops to attach to. You can tie the guys on or what I prefer to do is tie carabiners to the guys so I can easily clip and unclip from the awning.
It clears just fine on our Jeep. I have this awning on our Land Rover LR3 now and I had to play with the height to fully clear the liftgate on that vehicle, but that gate is also much larger
This is the only awning I've seen that is riveted at the hinges versus welded on some others. It doesn't look very strong...what is your experience so far? Also, I see it uses a "U" channel instead of boxed aluminum. How is that working? I'm thinking of purchasing the XL but have never seen Tuff Stuff awnings in person.
Yes this awning uses a nylon piece to attach the aluminum arm to the hinge. The benefit is that it’s serviceable and a designed weak point. Really there are only a couple truly freestanding 270 awnings (Bushwakka, Bush Company, Alucab as examples). The tuff stuff, and probably the competitor that you may be referring to, OVS or Rhinorack, should be used with the poles and tied down in anything beyond a gentle breeze. But if that fails and the awning flips over itself, the nylon pieces are serviceable on the Tuff Stuff which is nice. I will be doing a setup and review on a Bushwakka freestanding 270 awning soon. I can do pull ups from the arms on that awning (but it’s also twice the price).
@@OverlandAZ Interesting idea regarding a engineered weak point...hadn't thought of that. And yes I was referring to the OVS (also the Wraptor 6k by Overland Pros). I'm also wondering how the U channel stacks up to a boxed frame. Thanks for your input BTW!
@@johnb3567 we have had it in some pretty heavy winds in the past, tied down with poles and it’s held up well. I’m sure there may be some difference in structural integrity between the two but these are definitely an investment so I typically tie down in any conditions. I’d rather not discover the failure point LOL
I did for a short period on our LR3. I had to lower the height of the awning and move it out a few inches from the tent so there was enough clearance when the tent was opened. It's one of those "your mileage may vary" situations as it really depends on how much height and distance adjustment you have with your rack and awning brackets. The brackets included fortunately can be flipped to either raise or lower the height which definitely helped.

Looks awesome to me!
These things are buy a rent get a free 270 degree awning, you should post a video on how to mount it. I haven’t found a video yet.

Great video! Do you know the max length of the legs?
Hey. Are you still using this. How’s it holding up.
And do you the length of this when it’s closed up.
I am! We have it on our LR3 now so it doesn’t get used quite as often as it used to, but still holding up great. It’s about 83” long when closed
Thanks for the vid. I had one shipped with my alpha 2.
Why you selling alpha?

@@OverlandAZ lol 4 tents.
You sticking with tough stuff?
@@mikebrown200004 yes the LR3 will wear the Tuff Stuff gear. The Jeep will carry a Gazelle T4 and I may throw another tent on it for longer trips
@@OverlandAZ do you have walls for the awning? If are they any good? I’m considering ordering them.
Thanks
@@mikebrown200004 I don’t, but I’ve been out with people that have them on similar brands and they’re nice to have
How windy is too windy?
How did you secure the guys to he awning
The awning has loops to attach to. You can tie the guys on or what I prefer to do is tie carabiners to the guys so I can easily clip and unclip from the awning.
if you raise the window of the back (thinking for canopy door on a truck), how does that look?

Do you have this mounted yet with an rtt? I have the Alpha and curious if any issues with opening while the Awning is installed ?
