  • A request from Pete Tomlinson who asked, "How about a quick walk through of Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up" with some guidance on how to get the chord sliding techniques that he used so smoothly."
Pete, thank you for the request, I hope this helps a little, and if i've missed the point please say :) Great tune, in the 90's there was a CD that came with a magazine which had a live version of this tune on there. It started with just the guitar chords ..... i really wish I'd kept it.
Thanks again for all your nice comments and for watching. That fact that you all are watching is amazing.
I have succumbed to suggestions and now have a 'buy me a coffee' page if one of my videos has helped you out and you want to show it. Thank you very much if it has and you do :)

Thanks very much, Ive never played electric without a pick and rarely play strummed chords anyway so I will spend some time mastering this technique.
    Thanks
    Pete

It’s a very expressive method - I always think of my fingers as a drum kit - thumb = bass drum, keeping the beat and the other fingers playing around the kit - broken up chords. Fingers sound soooo much better too, it’s more rounded and the tone sort of swells out of the sound.

By sliding techniques you actually meant what he does with the hookline, which is the horn part on the original recording, didn't you?

Nice. Guitaring is very rock n roll centered so it's good to look at something different. It's easy to overlook the importance of the guitar in soul and funk yet it's there for all to hear, especially in Curtis's music.
Would I be right in thinking that the hammering on of fingers above an index finger bar is as important to the overall feel as sliding into it from a semi tone below is?

I would say it was, and you can kind of do both at the same time. Marcus King is great at this kind of soul blues fusion stuff - lots to be learned from him - ruclips.net/video/emQiYCr_XZI/видео.html

Dave, I loved Superfly and and Move on Up, and I seem to remember that Curtis Mayfield used an unusual guitar tuning based on the black keys on a piano. Any thoughts?

You’re right, thank you. I just found an article where they mention that - F#, A#, C#, F#, A#, F# (low to high) - it’ll be interesting to try that out 😊
