I've been a qualified guitar teacher for many, many years and always recommend this channel for anything funky and soul-based. I don't do recommendations lightly, but they're well deserved. Keep up the great work.
In case you didn’t notice, a lot of what Jimi Hendrix did was rooted in the style created by Curtis Mayfield. Jimi didn’t invent this stuff, Mayfield did. John Frusciante and John Mayer copy this stuff all the time. What is extremely upsetting to me is Mayfield never gets the credit he deserves. Thank you for bringing awareness to this!
so true man, apparently curtis let jimi be his support act in his early days and showed him all the little tricks like trills and stuff, jimi wrote a couple of songs as an ode to Curtis, one of the songs is called drifting.
I saw Curtis Mayfield in 1990, he was performing in central park NYC. He was phenomenal. You definitely got the Curtis Mayfield licks down packed. I think I'll listen to some curtis mayfiled right now. I love R&B, Rap, Rock music. I also love Soul Music, the kinda guy like Curtis Mayfield would play.
Love me some Curtis Mayfield!!...his music literally saved my life & guided me into the joys of being a Musician! So,.. I sing & play just like him! He was influential on my song writing style of that kind of R & B...Very cool of you to have illustrated just how he “Played” his ‘Strats & Telecasters!..not too many have recognized his contributions to Guitar Playing & Singing! ..in the Performing Arts...a style unmistakably him❗️👍🏾✨🎶🎸🥂🍾🤘🏾👨🏾A+!
Thank you for appreciating Curtis Mayfield's guitar playing! Have you noticed that John Mayer's "Waiting On The World To Change" sounds exactly like "People Get Ready"? I wonder if he got sued for that?
That live album you speak of is Curtis Mayfield live at the Bitter End in 1972!! Which is a fantastic live album!! I have it on vinyl! That interlude is from the performance of "We've only just Begun!! Cheers mate!!
This was a beautiful lesson to listen to, probably because of the thumb. Those little stabs can make you sound like a hero when you are deep into this genre.

Great Video! One thing that confused me was the thumb position, are you keeping your thumb perpendicular to the strings so you are only using the side edge? it looks that way but I cant get my tele to sound as bright and snappy

Great lesson but Curtis isn’t playing the chucks on it’s alright. He’s playing something else under it but it’s barely audible. A lot of his great playing is unmiced or very low in the mix. I’d love another Curtis lesson though.

Curtis was so underrated as a guitarist no plectrum used just that beautiful sound of his telecaster
Thanks for keeping Curtis alive !..He might be unknown to many now, but he was a huge influence back in the day...
he sure was, thanks for watching
This is the "Secret Sauce" to any guitar playing. Great stuff and thanks for the lesson.
thank you for watching!
The Telecaster is they most underrated soul / r&b / neo soul guitar EVER!

Actually, Curtis got a lot of what he did out of the church. What he was playing was typical of church musicians.
@@jamesjohnson1522 interesting, thanks for sharing.
I love that style of playing, so melodic.
@@jimmy5634 yes good stuff...

The first lick alone is enough to make this a great lesson. Great stuff, wonderful sound, thanx.
Thanks Rick. You're the only out there who can make this cool funk so easy to learn!
Thanks Beyhan!

Thank you for appreciating Curtis Mayfield's guitar playing! Have you noticed that John Mayer's "Waiting On The World To Change" sounds exactly like "People Get Ready"? I wonder if he got sued for that?
thanks for watching, Elaine. Well, its a common chord progression so they would never win the lawsuit.

Yep, you've spotted it!
Great Lesson Rick ! I saw Curtis Live in London 1989
Very cool!
Love the thumb strum. So much tone potential there. Great lesson!
Great video. You are an excellent teacher!
This is what we need! I get so many musical ideas just listening to this!

5:33 Do you remember the name of the live song with this incredible soul guitar part?
Cant remember but believe it was on live at the bitter end
@@TastyGuitarcom Thank you and thanks for this vid. I am having a blast playing these embellishments.

I may be totally corrupted by power chords, heavy distortion and loud amps…but I *love* Curtis Mayfield’s 🎸 work
So good. Thanks! Couldn't locate tabs at the website though...

Sweet.
Spinning “Curtis” at 45speed right now - I think a young D Boon must’ve done this.
what recording is the lick from that your playing to explain the 16th note chord embellishments? (starting at the 5:32 minute mark)
I believe that was from live at the Bitter End
Vielen Dank 👍🇩🇪
this is great, i wish there were chord diagrams but thank u

Yes but to get that brighter tone I'm kinda attacking it with the bottom of my thumb, kinda where the joint is
What are the pedals you are using to get this sound?
I believe this was just an Xotic EP booster, flint reverb into Suhr Bella amp
you must have antennas, I was watching Curtis since yesterday

Jesus coming soon!
Jimi had a good reference
Am I hearing some Jimi in this style? Did he incorporate his early group playing into his psychedelic stuff?
I assume Jimi most likely picked up his RnB chops from his time with the Isley's
What gauge strings are you using? They look pretty heavy. Flatwounds?
nope, 10-46
I can't find the TAB on your site. Was it removed?

Doesn’t Curtis play guitar in black key tuning?
yes, and I mention this is in standard tuning except the last example which is in his open F# tuning
@@TastyGuitarcom Do you cover it in any of your other lessons? Excellent video, btw.
Sorry my mistake.. you r on standard tuning
Nice Job

Omygosh.
Good lessons....but standard tuning Curtis didn't use much.
The world of soul guitar is a deep rabbit hole and I pity the guitar player that somehow gets thru life without experiencing it.
There is definitely a lot to learn that can be applied over most music styles

Robbie Robertson credits Curtis Mayfield as a great influence, playing fewer notes, but just enough of the right ones.
your guitar is is not on standard tuning !
so basically Hendrix owes Mayfield royalties for rippinig him off.
very confusing on the counting
