This video make you want to drop what you’re doing and pick up a guitar
You right, just did? 😂
That’s what happens with every video featuring Josh Smith, such a great musician AND teacher.
He’s become one of my favorite guitar players and lucky us there is a shitload of content with him on RUclips.
Yes it does
Just happened to me. Half way through, I had the amp fired up.
Ya! I did 🙂
I also love this lesson because it's SHORT.
Great guitar player and teacher. Always looking forward to these videos and makes me want to pick up my guitar even more!
Outstanding grove grabbing class. I’ve partied to this music for years and it still holds up. It’s one of first hard core groves I learned on guitar. It is relentless. Thanks putting this groove in your class.
I’ve got loads of respect for this guy. Enjoyed your tutorial thanks.
You’re awesome man. I love the way you break things down on a personal level.
Josh isn't just a fantastic musician but has a really relaxing way of putting his passion across; as if you're the only one he's talking to. I could watch and listen to this guy for days. Just so good and really humble.
Don't know about you but what I finding is there are so many pro musicians that are just awesome cats, super humble and easy going, I want hang out with them, I always used to see the over confident ones years ago but now its the other way, thanks Josh for being real......
such a nice guy, top work Josh
another great one, Josh. Telling it like it is. Playing by yourself and getting that internal clock and finding that pocket is what it's all about. Well done!
I love it he talks about his learning, younger days. I had some tough older players around me too, that thought my style of playing wasn’t efficient. It worked out for me, josh too obvious. He’s such a great player and dude.
Don’t stop the josh smith vids!!!
Dude...you're incredible. Tasty grooves. Great teacher.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite RUclips guitar channels.
So awesome. Thanks Josh!
Great advice!! Funk has always been a huge influence on my guitar playing.
Fantastic! This is my go to rythym teacher. Love it.
Loving these mini lessons!
Perfect for where I’m at! I’m doing some of this already and there’s some good stuff to mine in there.
When I finally learned a little bit of drums, my guitar playing came alive. The recent band I was in (I moved) I was the rhythm player. Someone happened to video a piece. I was also the sound guy and I could see me watching the board and the vocalists and not focused on my playing My right arm was a machine cranking out the pocket, and that’s when I finally saw myself as a solid rhythm player. Those hours paid off...
Love you Josh! Excellent Lesson.
Josh is a great teacher
A great player and a great teacher ! Be practicing tomorrow 👍
I love it! Great lesson!
Each of these videos is as good as it gets. Keep it up. The low number of subs is baffling.
GREAT JOB, WELL DONE
Once again you are right on the money. This will help players find the grove.
Very good advice. Thank you
Awesome lesson!!
Gorgeous guitar great video
Great session!
Outstanding lesson...thanks! Rhythm chops are often so underappreciated and underdeveloped in the advancing guitarist's education
As an old teacher said to me, “Soloing chops might make you famous, but rhythm chops will keep you working!”
Simple but not so simple... :-) I love Josh's attitude when he says he can sit and play this for hours and have fun. There is something super contagious about it.
sweet sound.
That Guitar looks fabulous with those cracks and stuff
this dude..! good lad
Amazing player
I've been saying that for years... Listen to James Brown to learn to play guitar. Awesome to hear JS say it as well.
Great minds think alike. Best.
1:51....Here it is: down, up, down (muted), up, down (muted), down, up (muted), down (muted) down
Nice guitar, good lesson.
fun , oh oh so much fun ! I love james brown s rhythm section jimmy knowlend thanks
thank you bro
Josh is awesome
Damn. Keep it up.
Josh...GREAT lesson! No better sources to listen to, and to learn from (to get that groove going), than the guys in James Brown’s band. Just lay on that FUNK!
cool stuff. sending link to our rhythm guitar dude. Thx!!!
YES!🔥
Your playing is great! One note.
funky good time (doing it to death) is Cheese Martin playing the rhythm part and Jimmy Nolen is doing the fills.
Love your work and lessons. Is that an L5?
I came here just to look at the guitar.
👌
Improvising leads to improvement
Thank you for that 😊 but i can’t make it 😅 Could you tell us more about when you hit the rope ? With the up and down thing ?
Awesome Playing and wise lesson.
What about your upstrokes and Downstrokes election in the "Gonna have a funky goodtime" guitar part???? Greetings from Perú!
You rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great lesson! Does anyone know about that Gibson model? A ES 350T?
I'm really enjoying this... Guitar is like my favorite favorite instrument and I played all brass coming up
Anything done by CHIC/ Nile Rodgers would be great to practice on rhythm guitar! Great lesson on James Brown he had some amazing musicians !
I so great can play all Nile Rodgers stuff. But i can't play this easy like him. So great video
What is the model of this guitar? I love it. Josh is amazing!!👏
Just Gimmie that 1 Josh!
wow. This is so cool, but yet easy
Unrelated-
I bought a Godin Kingpin 2 a few years ago and I just haven’t bonded with it. It’s very similar to your Gibson in that it’s hollow, has P90s... Do you have any tone tips?
This sounded 50% acoustic. Killer guitar. Of course, a tool is only as good as it's user. Josh Smith RULES!
What model Gibson is that? Awesome sounding!
Bootsy Collins (famous James
Brown Bass player) said
“James used to always say to me, man you gotta stay in the
One (1)”
josh that nolan strumming you do... got me playing video at 50 percent speed. Tryin to understand why and whats that right hand hibrydstrummingroovestuffgoingon?
❤
Ok I broke my head over this one for way to long. And then he says "Mann this is soo easy" :( !!
If you're a regular mortal like me and don't know what is going on, here is how I understand it: It's a shuffle rhythm counted 1 N tri-puh-let tri-puh-let 4. This is why you'll see him hit those downstrokes after downstrokes. It's because down up down triplets sound stronger. It took too long for me to stop thinking 'one e and uh' on this cause I am a tad dull and funk hurr durr -_-"...
👌
Anybody know any good backing tracks to jam on this beat?
Bingo!! If there's no head bobbing going on it's lifeless.
I love it! I was scouring James Brown records for this rhythm pattern at 1:50, the closest I could find was on "Doing it to Death", but not quite. Josh, or anyone, could you point me to the right song? I'd like to learn the whole thing.
I think he said Funky Good Time. Is that a James Brown song? I honestly wouldn't know.
ruclips.net/video/J6ABoqHKa_8/видео.html
Thank u holysmokes44!
Hey bro on "Funky Good Time" (Doin it to Death), its actually 9th chord to the sharp 9 (same root), THEN 9th to the half step up 9th... That sharp 9 is crucial.. thats the Funk LOL Sounding great Josh!! Stay Funky
You should do one on Al McKay and his rhythm magic...
I wonder who played the rhythm guitar on " Sun Goddess ", was it Johnny Graham or Al McKay? Great song to play to though!
@@adrianlyord5300it was Johnny Graham
🎸👍
This is awesome but what's with that crazy fade at 0:43
Jimmy nolan was a bad ass@!!!!!
Looks like JB is singing at around 3:00
Another great lesson. By the way, what's the name of that type of reverb? I believe it's coming from the amp.
Basic spring
Josh are you from NEW YORK?
What's that 2 chords on 2 min ??thanks
What the James Brown track? So I can play along to it.
I want the guitar!! Whats the name?
What is that chord ? What exact strings are covered in first rhythm?
It's an E9 chord (x76777) that he moves one fret higher
He makes great teaching videos. Not too sure about him always saying how easy it is. LOL. Who would give this a thumbs down? Very strange
Super simple....to you my friend.. lol
Don't forget Hearlon "Cheese" Martin (on the left); Jimmy Nolan on the right:
ruclips.net/video/ghw14YZjugg/видео.html
And it's really crazy for me to be correcting a guy who's light years beyond any level I'll reach but, at least in this version of Doing it to Death there's a "B" part of the figure that's not the 1/2step chord rise: ruclips.net/video/HIakXEm4wPE/видео.html
Where do I find a slower version of the first rhythmic pattern he plays?
you can play it at 1/2 or .75 speed, with youtube
click the gear icon
What is the name of first part you have play?
Funky Good Time by James Brown.
What type of guitar is that?
An early to mid ‘50s Gibson ES-350.
Is that an l5? Didn’t know they came with p90s
And therein the key.
I can't seem to get the right sound. The pick sounds clunky. Maybe I need to play a lot louder or maybe it's something more subtle than that.
That's good. Son, go listen to JB and get your rhythm together. .. Definitely works
would have been better if you gave the chords for us newbies!
Great stuff. He or she though - I've heard girls play good funk 🎸
Godfather JB started "On The One"..
Why is this not 4 hours long
If it aint got that swing....you know the rest!
I'm sitting here lonely like a broken man.
I serve my time doin' the best I can.
Walls and bars they surround me.
But, I don't want no sympathy.
great,where's the lesson?
Toca muy bonito “pero para él” las demás personas que queremos aprender necesitamos algo más didáctico que acá no se encuentra!!
‘PFunk’ wouldn’t say that. Bootsy would say that. Boogie (RIP) is the original bassist for PFunk. Bootsy, the bass player for the JBs, came into the PFunk pantheon later. Funk guitar doesn’t end with Catfish and James Brown. That’s just where it starts.
