Josh is a super gifted guitarist & teacher. He shares all his knowledge and experience with passion & humility. He can show you in three minutes what a book takes a hundred pages to explain.
It would be helpful if the chord shapes were shown on screen through the progressions to make sure viewers can play what they seeing and hearing correctly.
Too bad you didn't take a moment to show the finger positions. Can't see through your hand. So I did it thus: On strings 1-4, fret 5,7,6,7. That gives you an A6. Reach with your thumb for the base. Move that shape to strings 2-5, it becomes the V chord, an E7. By moving the E7 down you can get to IV chord, D7. Comp away.
He is teching a style, not a "note for note" composition. Anyone who can't hear his way on the guitar isn't ready for this. Guitarists these days only want the fun stuff, not the basics.
Wow! Josh I've been playing for over 65 years and I never learned more from anyone than i have from you my friend. Esp. the Shuffle lessons. I play mostly classic Country and Blues. My Country/ Ray Price shuffles are my favs.. Keep up the good work. PS.. One of the nicest guys on You-Tube!
Josh...keep up the good work! This lesson on learning blues shuffles is the lesson I’ve been waiting to come along for the past 5 years..short & to the point! Excellent!
He's just expanding on a simple concept - 12 bar blues, chords A D E, with an Am pent scale thrown in; then using passing tones like chromatic run ups (notes or chords); think of how a blues scale works beside a pentatonic minor scale. He adds 2 other well know ideas - ii V I (in A thats B E A), and the III which in A is a C. In truer terms there are dominant 7s and suspended notes here, but the premise is using: A D E 12 bar or (A flat) A x2 (D flat) D x2 x2 (E flat) E - B E A (turnaround) or the basic E (E flat) D A C. A few triad shapes will help you with the A chord (see Kind Hearted Woman Blues), and the C7 shape used chromatically (3rd fret D7 5th fret E7). There a nice D flat sound (5th string 4th fret) etc. And don't forget the A string and E string can be open and pressed as you wish. ruclips.net/video/UZHjKY2ay94/видео.html ruclips.net/video/tkj8S81bgvQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/XzXOcg_6Te0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/YZEZJqvvxZA/видео.html Trouble being it isn't as easy as it looks to keep the rhythm going, mix it up add the fills and passing tones. So nail the concept then watch him and others and listen to proper Delta, Texas and Chicago blues. It helps if you try it out as finger style acoustic beforehand.
Because this is RUclips, and some people have come to expect everything exactly their way - and for absolutely no charge whatsoever - and if they don't get their way, they cannot just be thankful for what they got but instead they whinge uncontrollably in public like the big babies they are...
It`s a few years i know Mr. Smith, all through watching his heavenly solo performances in JTC Guitar ...(into Facebook i think) but this 4-5 minutes video: I learned a lot, simply, very useful ... A real GEM Many thanks to Mr. Smith
Nope me neither, I can either play that high E or that low, not both. I find the best thing to do when you cant play something is to just adjust what you’re trying to play to suit your ability, rather than giving up. I’ve got pretty frustrated trying to learn Hendrix songs as my fingers just don’t bend that way, but I just do what I can and most non-musicians will never notice anyway.
I would have never thought about the 6 chord as I would have thought it was too close to a major 7 - 4 chord. When I play it, it does sound very "major 7th." When Josh plays it, sounds great.
NICE LESSON, SO what happens to us ,,the one without mile long fingers AND WE CAN'T GET OUR non 6 INCH LONG thumb AROUND THE NECK ? I always get a kick of how nobody,, these guitar experts mentions this , and yes JOSH IS AN EXEMPLARY PLAYER NO DOUBT ?
Can someone please explain what his finger are holding down for the A6 ? Is the fist finger baring the 5 th? Then the others in a normal A shape??? Anyone ?????? Pleeeease?? Forget it! I got it 🕺 thanks for nothing ! 😂
I'm still a little confused by the grip. Can I use my first finger to bar the 5th and 1st? I find this easier than wrapping my thumb around to A string? Thanks in advance if you happen to see this.
Ok. So my fingers are just not fast enough yet. Ive maxed out my what you called the chicago box effort. Doin exactly what you showed already. Backwards ect. I can hear notes in my head i want to play but not yet figured out quite how yet. More effort needed. Thanks for this. I can take something from tis so it does help even though i am sure it is basic for a lot of people......BUT....it was not always basic , was it?
You know it's good when it feels like it's pushing you to break out but knowing it'll build and be so worthwhile when you do making the return even more satisfying. Your lessons are amazing Josh!
The "better" I get I realize I better buy a ticket, cause I will never be that good. I have to be honest, I really don't know who this guy is, but I'd love to see him live some day...whenever that is in 2-3 years.
That's cool. I noticed I had to put my index finger on the G string not the B as I would usually do to play that triad, but with the 6th added, you already have the B string fretted, so you don't need the index finger on the B, so it works and sounds great! Thanks for sharing!
Lazy not to add chord charts. Of the 100k+ views so far, I wonder how many people immediately realised, for example, whether he's fretting the top E string on all 3 chords, is he playing the low E string on all chords, that the D and E chords are rootless? Or even got the basic fingering correct... "playing an A triad and adding the 6" - "Well I know my triad shape on the D, G and B strings, so he's adding the 6 on the high E, right? ... But wait, is that the 6?!" Chord charts in the corner of the screen clarify the information instantly, with no downside for the more advanced player.
What a great lesson... straight forward, focused, yet rich with info. Yes, you have to know CAGED, and enough about scales that you understand 6ths, 7th chords (and 9th chords?). But, once you've got that a bit, seeing these embellishments and applications are super cool. And, all that, under 5 minutes!
If your thumb can’t roll over the low E it’s cos you need to change your hand position so you are holding the neck a bit like a bat in the palm of your hand. That way your thumb will naturally roll over the low E
@@humanBonsai Ive got the same problem i guess its also for playing different shape for years but i guess i have to make some adjusments thanx for the tip Dave !
You could always go with a thinner neck guitar if you aren't already on such. But I have an issue with it as well. My hand's aren't super-small but I still don't feel totally comfortable with those thumb wrapping techniques. Partly maybe because I played classical a lot during my more formative years.
Yes!
What a joy. A master
Josh is a super gifted guitarist & teacher. He shares all his knowledge and experience with passion & humility. He can show you in three minutes what a book takes a hundred pages to explain.
easy shape if you have giant hands. i cant eve touch low e with my thumb. lol
Josh, has anyone told you that you make a great teacher?
I never get tired of Josh Smith: genuineness, clarity, talent and passion. Pure gold 🫶🏼
Best 5min I've spent on any lesson out here. This cat is something else. You can tell he's been there and done that !!
I’ve only just discovered you Josh and I’m finding your videos and knowledge so interesting. So so great , thank you 👍
excellent lesson. in addition to being a great player, you are also an excellent teacher. thank you.
It would be helpful if the chord shapes were shown on screen through the progressions to make sure viewers can play what they seeing and hearing correctly.
2:30 "...so that's a twelve bar blues with very little motion.." ...but with a lot of emotion!!!
Too bad you didn't take a moment to show the finger positions. Can't see through your hand. So I did it thus: On strings 1-4, fret 5,7,6,7. That gives you an A6. Reach with your thumb for the base. I think he is quite clear. You have to stop the video and look and listen!
Not the same how he plays it but its wright
I lost my hand trying that chord
got to find your intellect first
I always scratch my head when I see thumbs downs on videos like this. What about this video did someone watch and says we that sucks?

Can't wait to see more Josh Smith lessons!!
That’s in the pure gold category of lessons. Brilliant musician.
fingerings please it's a little confusing
A6 is frets 7,6,7 on strings 4,3,2. D7 lowers the third string note to 5th fret. Move that grip up 2 frets for E7. You'll get it.
@@thraknik great. Thank you.
My god this shuffle strum is soooo hard to get right
Josh...keep up the good work! This lesson on learning blues shuffles is the lesson I’ve been waiting to come along for the past 5 years..short & to the point! Excellent!

Fantastic! 🎸
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? I never get it.

And I always thought the 6th chord was for jazz!
The 6 chord that's what I was missing thank you very much

Most people including me cannot wrap their thumb around and play like that on the top

Great advice Lewis!! Guitar playing to me is MAKE IT YOUR OWN.
You can barre that chord
Hey Josh, You must have been the one who played guitar on the Viagra commercial.
Some great tips here, very concise explanation, love the simple D7 and E7 shapes.
wow. lightbulb moment here. cant wait to practice this. excellent instruction!
Once again Josh, thanks for a very interesting lesson, that’s now in the memory bank 👍🏻👍🏻
I love this guy ! SO pleasent pal !

I been playing over 20 years for a living and I watch your stuff
This is wisdom. Thanks
Just think, in an alternate universe, there's a "Smosh Jith" from the "No Ukulele Network"
... wtf? ...idk
I just learned something! Thanks 😊
Sometimes I wish I had bigger hands
Heck yeah! Thank you, Josh. New Subbie.

Truly, the man, the myth, the legend. What an absolute ultra chad.
Less than 5 minutes and you go with something useful and immediatly applicable. Great lessons!
Agreed
thanx big time,Josh.not chatty at all, just instructive!

This is fantastic, thank you for sharing! I've subscribed and look forward to seeing more.
Can't tell what strings his fingers are on. Great lesson, but when chords create close clusters of fingers like that, multiple views can surely help.
Great lesson !!, just a little too much reverb.
He doesn’t play the route of the D 4 chord and then plays major scale over top despite saying it was ideal for pentatonic scale.
'Little licks in between the chords' = that's what she said...
You know it's good when it feels like it's pushing you to break out but knowing it'll build and be so worthwhile when you do making the return even more satisfying. Your lessons are amazing Josh!
The ”better” I get the more I discover the importance and the joy to learn and master the basics. Your lessons are great.

Nice one. ( most frustrating camera angle and no diagram) 👌
What if you don't or can't play with thumb on the neck?
Super economical playing
Great video lesson!!!!
Do I have to use my thumb that grip is hard for me?
WONDERFULLY Done
Great shuffle formula thx
You are a nice guy.
Blues =J Smith
Which amp does Josh play here?
Nice. Any lesson on that.
Damn this is good stuff
Zoom in fat fingers cant see all the notes
that was cool
Blues Alive!
Played at half speed.
Great lesson on blues shuffles! Easy finger transitions in the way you play the voicings of the chords.
M a big fan of your ❤
That's cool. I noticed I had to put my index finger on the G string not the B as I would usually do to play that triad, but with the 6th added, you already have the B string fretted, so you don't need the index finger on the B, so it works and sounds great! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Josh...you're teaching skills and playing are wonderful..i look forward to more shows and lessons
tabs would have been great .
Badass.

Great explanation. Great basics. Great lesson.
The feel and groove you create is exellent.
Just guitar, and more music than play some of the bands.
Great teaching as well.
Cheers from Poland.
I love that A6 but my thumb is too short to roll over the low E. My kingdom for slightly longer fingers 🤘

You the absolute greatest!!!
Great video josh...teach us some more of this stuff...thanks
masta
Indeed you are a good teacher sir Josh... Thanks allot
How about a lesson on that palm mute? It’s folk music without it.
❤
Wow that is really helpful thank you...

Thanks Josh. Great lesson and delivery!

Super cool! I need to learn that thumb wrap thang...
Very usefull and sounds really good thanks a lot!!
