Thank you for your insight. I am 76 years young and was raised around the blues in Houston Texas. BB was the first blues artist that influenced me. When backing tracks came out, I used them, but I felt something was sorely missing. Stopped using them. I currently play with a blues bassist that plays simple lines but with authentic feel and is always in the pocket. I always remind him that I play the blues only as good as he lets me.

Agreed. One thing about blues, it doesn't have to be complicated like other genres. It's one that you play alone with or a with a bass player. B.B. King.... man did he ever have tone and sound. And he played and sang his heart out. He kept it very simple. Less is more. Minimalist, he was. I am a lifelong fan of Willie Nelson. Between Willie, Waylon Jennings, BB, Albert King and Freddy King, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Howlin Wolf, Bukka White and Son House, and Chuck Berry, Django Reinhardt and the Jazz greats of the 40s and 50s and the likes of George Benson, ya got to know that was some great musicianship. Ohhh man... boy could they play and their sound was unmistakable. The tone is in the bone. We all have our own voices. We don't all sound alike. Just as our voices are as unique as our fingerprints, so too, will our guitar (or whatever instrument) playing will be unique. Learn to play, learn about gear and relax and play for the enjoyment of playing. And have fun... kicking back.

You are one of the most inspiring teachers on the internet! I’ve made my living for more than 30 years as a singing guitar player. I’ve entertained people at resorts like Steamboat Springs, Colorado where i had a house gig for over 15 years. I currently live on Block Island, Rhode Island where I play about 100 shows every Summer. I am mostly self taught and always did what worked for me without understanding what I was doing. I am continually trying to unlearn bad habits and pick up better ones. I really wish i had studied more theory and proper practice techniques when I was younger. It can be discouraging at times but I do have great desire to become better even as I get older. Your approach really inspires me and makes me believe I can still improve and it’s not too late to become more of the player I’d like to be. Thank you!!

I love your approach to one string and more " talking notes than pentatonic scaly notes. My humble request is for you to zoom in on the fretboard or spell the notes so that somebody like me can follow. Sometimes, your angle can not show me the notes you are playing. Again, thank you.

I don’t know if I totally agree with you about backing tracks because they’re definitely helpful if you use them as a tool. They help me to hear the correct notes to hit on the chord changes and what those interesting notes sound like. But I completely understand your point. If all you’re doing to practice is take the first position pentatonic and play it for hours a day with backing tracks you’re not learning anything new. Also I love your videos. Been playing 30 years and I think you’re the best teacher online. You break everything down and show the how and why. I’m really thankful for your channel!!! Have an awesome Holiday.
Thank you for your kind words! One of reasons that should not use RUclips backing tracks because you are missing a chance to practice chord progression & learn chord changes by your ears! Unless you already can play those chord progressions really well plus if that backing track is so great as real band! (Most of them ... not so great) Many reasons! You want to practice chords, rhythm guitar and make yourself a backing track (simple and good!) then yes! I agree with you! Good to have a good prepared backing track by yourself! Life in general, avoid any easy ways! Go slow then you can learn & play so well! I have been teaching at Berklee College Of Music since 1993! Most banking tracks are made for sure that you can hit any notes and be comfortable! If you have a boss RC-3. You can practice making your own backing track that sounds good! Thank you!

Hey, Tomo. Thanks for the wisdom and breaking it down. Sometimes i do get hard on myself and feel like i'm not getting anywhere and then I put the guitar down for a few minutes. Then I come back to a noticeable improvement. I am originally a drummer and the drums came easy to me. Guitar takes work! Holy shit! not an easy instrument for me, but i am on the singing tone path rather than the shredded cheese path. And SPACE IS THE PLACE!

Thank you, Tomo, for another great lesson and words of wisdom. My new rule is to practice at least 2 hours before hanging out at Guitar Center. Then I count my time there as half time. So if I'm there for 4 hours I count it as 2 hours of practice if I'm playing. Trying to account ror social time and also soaking up information may subtract/add to that ratio.
You’re very welcome! If you have two hours for practicing guitar. You can accomplish a lot. But you need to record yourself everyday even two minutes. If you don’t record yourself then hours of practicing won’t work!

Just what I needed, it opened a new door to learning the blues and a great breakdown! In addition, one should hit the root, 3rd and 5th etc of the active chord and the notes of bassline with the licks I assume? A number II of this lesson would be gold! Thank you and Happy Yule.
The 7th chords don’t use a note in the major scale but a note in the jazz scale the flat 7th that would be the first chord in a blues progression if it was a 7th chord, the next chords in the progression using different notes, but the 5th chord in a blues 145 progression won’t have the root in the jazz scale which they use for blues but in the major scale so knowing that helps me think about what the feel of the different notes is bringing.
But some people will switch to soloing in the major scale of the 4 chord ie. A if you’re in E major blues, usually I kinda jump between the jazz scale and the major scale if u notice they nicely on top of each other when most people think of the minor pentatonic as being below the major one, the jazz scale is just one note off the minor pentatonic

At a glance his playing isn’t impressive because he isn’t flashy and he is very reserved. I used to wonder why everyone respected him so much it didn’t take long for me to see his dynamics and note choice are so tasteful you can definitely see where John got his inspiration from you can tell he was a huge influence on him. The closer you listen to his playing the more mind blowing it is but you have to pay attention. Thank you Tomo for making these videos for us less fortunate that aren’t able to be your students at Berkeley. You are spot on with the BB King comment tho. 200% spot on.

Some where around the middle of the video it all fell into place and I totally understand better. So, thank you for the insight. BTW, back in 1984 I won a $500 scholarship to Berklee for Best Bass Guitar at a HS Stage/Jazz Band competition. Sadly I was never able to go and regret it to this day.

Hey, Tomo. Thanks for the wisdom and breaking it down. Sometimes i do get hard on myself and feel like i'm not getting anywhere and then I put the guitar down for a few minutes. Then I come back to a noticeable improvement. I am originally a drummer and the drums came easy to me. Guitar takes work! Holy shit! not an easy instrument for me, but i am on the singing tone path rather than the shredded cheese path. And SPACE IS THE PLACE!

My new rule is to practice at least 2 hours before hanging out at Guitar Center. Then I count my time there as half time. So if I'm there for 4 hours I count it as 2 hours of practice if I'm playing. Trying to account ror social time and also soaking up information may subtract/add to that ratio.
You’re very welcome! If you have two hours for practicing guitar. You can accomplish a lot. But you need to record yourself everyday even two minutes. If you don’t record yourself then hours of practicing won’t work!

Just what I needed, it opened a new door to learning the blues and a great breakdown! In addition, one should hit the root, 3rd and 5th etc of the active chord and the notes of bassline with the licks I assume? A number II of this lesson would be gold! Thank you and Happy Yule.

The 7th chords don’t use a note in the major scale but a note in the jazz scale the flat 7th that would be the first chord in a blues progression if it was a 7th chord, the next chords in the progression using different notes, but the 5th chord in a blues 145 progression won’t have the root in the jazz scale which they use for blues but in the major scale so knowing that helps me think about what the feel of the different notes is bringing.
I listen to a lot of Albert King Stevie Ray Vaughan BB King Jimi Hendrix but I’ve been getting more into the blues lately
But some people will switch to soloing in the major scale of the 4 chord ie. A if you’re in E major blues, usually I kinda jump between the jazz scale and the major scale if u notice they nicely on top of each other when most people think of the minor pentatonic as being below the major one, the jazz scale is just one note off the minor pentatonic

At a glance his playing isn’t impressive because he isn’t flashy and he is very reserved. I used to wonder why everyone respected him so much it didn’t take long for me to see his dynamics and note choice are so tasteful you can definitely see where John got his inspiration from you can tell he was a huge influence on him. The closer you listen to his playing the more mind blowing it is but you have to pay attention. Some where around the middle of the video it all fell into place and I totally understand better. So, thank you for the insight. BTW, back in 1984 I won a $500 scholarship to Berklee for Best Bass Guitar at a HS Stage/Jazz Band competition. Sadly I was never able to go and regret it to this day.
