- I met up with TheyCallHimDietSeth and Mrs. Diet to watch trains in Watkins Glen, NY. In this video the Finger Lakes Railway switches out cars at the Cargrill Salt mine.
This is a very interesting one man operation. The locomotives are remotely controlled. I’m not sure if he also controls the the Road Crossing Signals. You will see once the Road Crossing Signals activate, the Track Signal goes from red to green.

In the early 1990's I worked for Conrail , I have actually switched at this very site. I cannot imagine that trains are now being operated remotely. This is a great video bringing back many memories. Thanks for that.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video? Walmart wasn’t there in the early 90s was it?
Hi from england a brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable video!!
Thank you so much. I’m glad you like enjoyed the video!
Very cool video!!
Thank you so much! It is a very interesting operation.
Awesome video and operation!
Thank you so much!
Awesome video
Thank you so much. I’m
glad you enjoyed it!
Been to Watkins Glen many times over the years but this was a whole new perspective. Enjoyed watching
Watkins Glen is a fun town! This is the first time I’ve watched them switch out cars at the Salt Mine. Big Walmart was behind me.
Ghost train 👻 lol. Do like the throwback NYC paint scheme tho🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🚃🚃
It is amazing one guy does all this! I’m glad they kept the NYC paint scheme alive!
wow to find two old GE's in conrail AND peoria and eastern colors in 2023... NICE
I’m surprised they haven’t repainted the old Conrail unit yet. The Finger Lakes Railway also has a GE paint in Leigh Valley colors!
@@MyLifesTracks a GE in lehigh valley colors!!!... you got that one on vid to?... yea some of the shortlines don't have enough cash to repaint units... which is good for us who like to see old paint schemes... btw that conrail blue is in VERY good shape all things considered... i would have figured the unit would be down to bare metal
@@25mfd Yes! In my video “A Day On The Finger Lakes Railway”, you can see the Leigh Valley unit, #2201.

@@MyLifesTracks thanks i'll check that out
Very cool catch and shout out! Those locos are cool! (Dave).
Thank you. Finger Lakes Railway paint scheme is so nice! Very interesting railroad. I hope sometime to ride on one of their RDCs!
Excellent footage! Those old GEs sound amazing! They have a nice lope at idle!
Thank you. This was so much fun to watch! I can’t wait to back and get more footage.
@@MyLifesTracks You're welcome!
That was pretty cool , its a giant model railroad layout . 😁 You guys got a good show there, thanks for taking us a long .
While I was recording this I kept thinking this would make a fun switching layout !
This IS my layout. I've got both sidings. Plus the other salt industry in Watkins. And the Himrod yard. So cool to see it 1:1.
that's just awesome dude, I still want to go catch the brewery in Utica being changed out thinking about catching out of town industrial action! with the amount I've seen NS moved Cargill cars I thought it'd be grom a bigger operation and job really. my Terex Loader just came in the mail! might make a video about why I bought it for the layout and explain how it's canon.
Catching them switching the Utica brewery would be cool. I have no idea when they run. I like how they have street running and an under the road level switch throw! I’ll like to see the Terex Loader, sounds interesting!
Love the one man show, but love the EX Conrail better, great video today. Is Seth camera shy. 🤣
I’m surprised they haven’t painted that unit yet. Who is Seth?😂
Great footage, Mark! What a fun morning, too! We’ve got to do that again sometime!
I really enjoyed my time here. I want to come back in the Spring and make a much nicer video now that we understand the operation more!
Not going to lie but i thinking that the only u23b from conrail still wearing its conrail blue and also i cought ns 265 with 2 dash 9 rebulits
I love the old Conrail Blue. It would be cool if they repainted it Conrail blue with their name on it. They have a unit painted in the Leigh Valley paint scheme. I like seeing those rebuilt Dash 9s!
Hey Mark, it was great to see this FGLK action from my hometown. And as you know, I model this industry on my layout, so it was super cool to see it. The old SGLR cars are really showing their age, aren't they. Even 2309 looks a little rough, up close. I need to model those track signals. What happened at the 6:30 mark? Looks like the RCO operator had to stop the locos in the middle of the crossing and line the switch. I didn't realize they blew the horn while inside the gates, good to know. At 7:39 he is pulling a cut out of the East siding. Cargill's low sodium salt production is on this side. They use potassium chloride in that process, hence the red POTX hoppers. Really appreciate you posting this. Looking forward to Seth's video. Take care - Bill
It was as so much fun watching this. I plan on going back in the Spring and make a better video now that I have a better understanding of what’s going on. I was amazed how easy the engineer made all the moves look. I would love to know more about the functions of the remote control. The one SGLR had a huge bulge in the roof. I would like to know the story behind that! Do you need photos of the track signals? Those look pretty new.
@@MyLifesTracks Funny story about the RCO. I know a guy that worked at Cargill, loading rail cars among other things. One time he was watching the operator run the RCO box, and the train wouldn't move. So he gave it a good whack, and it started off. My guy asked him, "You ever have it not respond to the stop command?" The answer was "Not yet." LOL. The SGLR with a bulge in the roof - only thing I can think of is a forklift operator screwup. Looking forward to the Spring video. I wonder if you and Seth could collaborate? Drone shots of the staging - not sure if they drop some cars on another spur, and pick them back up. And if they use a runaround track. Combined with what you film on the ground - could be pretty awesome! I grabbed screenshots of the train signals from your video, you had great shots of them. I need to get some Evergreen styrene tubing. This was the best Cargill switching video I've ever seen. Thanks! - Bill
I could hear the RCO box alarm go off a few times. I’m guessing the operator has to touch a certain spot or hit a button every so often or the fail safe is to stop the locomotives? Seth and I have been talking about how we are going to video the operation next time. They switched out US Salt first, then came to Cargill. We will stay longer next time and catch them going back to Himrod! I’m guessing it not often they switch out the east siding? The rails looked like nothing has gone over them in awhile.
