You mention arching your fingers, I have trouble with this. Any tips?

A bunch of things can interfere with arching. Trimming your nails may help. Bracing your thumb behind the neck instead of wrapping it over the top of the neck can get them standing up taller, though this can introduce too much bend in the wrist, so elevating your guitar by putting your foot on a stool or standing up with a strap can help with that. If your fingers get wobbly, the Caterpillar Exercise can help with strength and coordination too.

"as long you keep the count" - That's a good point. Staying in rhythm is the most important thing. But when you're alternating bass, you're usually just playing chord tones--alternating between the root and the 5th typically. Or if you're doing a bass run or something more complicated, you're playing a specific sequence of notes. So if you play a string you didn't intend, it does matter.
