  • I want to give most of the credit for this video to the guys at New Mind. The video they made on piston rings taught me things that 23 yrs as a tech didnt. Please dont get mad at me for using some of your content, it is just so good. I hope this helps you undertand a bit more about your vehicle and make what we do make a little more sense. Please let me know what you want to see next.

Great video truly explains the need for regular oil changes, I change oil every 4000 miles full synthetic and alway new oil filter.

Thank you for the feedback Jon. Great job, your vehicle will serve you well with that mindset.

some engines just don't care about oil. Our 90 Tempo 2.3 got the oil pan bolt stripped at 40,000 miles, my Mom didn't want to pay the $400 to fix it, as she said "We will just trade it off", well at 132,000 miles(90,000 miles on the same oil), we still had it, it was still running like new, we sold it for $200 to a neighborhood kid and his Dad and he drove it 3 months and flipped it over. My elderly Aunt accidently put 60,000 miles on her 03 Marquis before she realized it and it was still fine.

That strategy doesn't work very well for the vast majority of cases in my experience. Ultimately, the choice to perform maintenance is everyones to make individually. I just want to give my customers my professional opinion to help them prolong the reliability of their vehicles. That all.

If I'm not mistaken, low tension piston rings also increase power a bit as well and what racing motors were/are equipped with

It would make sense that they would allow the engine to make more power by not holding it back.

Current "low tension" Piston rings are Worthless crap.
Who's ONLY reason for existence is Slightly better Fuel mileages.. Period !

I am not an engineer, but I understand why they are used. We just do our best to help people deal with things that we can't change. Understanding the problem and how to avoid it is what we are after.

I’ve specialized in rebuilding primarily Asian import engines for years and the use of low tension rings coupled with ever increasing oil change intervals have created oil consumption problems which various manufacturers. NPR has been a prominent supplier of rings for the biggest names in the Asian market. I’ve had great success using aftermarket premium rings from Hastings and several others. Hastings and Sealed Power both offer steel rings with either chrome or moly coatings that work great. Toyota produced one engine in particular that was notorious for oil consumption due to its rings clogging up and I’ve used it as a test vehicle for Aftermarket rings coupled with sound oil change intervals. The owner of the car puts crazy amounts of highway miles on the car and it’s got about 225K miles on it since it had an inframe refresh and it still has very little oil consumption between 5K interval oil changes. Usually about 1/2-3/4 of a qt.

Low tension rings aren't crap. We have been using them in the racing world for many years! They require the best fuel and a good synthetic Oil changed regularly 😂
