#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

Thank you for the continued support, and I hope you enjoyed this special (for me) episode of DOAG. We are self-sponsoring this video, so please check our social links for more information on how to follow and support us. I also upon re-watching this, felt I might have seemed a little too harsh on GunZ 2. I don't think it's a totally generic shooter, it just feels/looks MORE generic than GunZ 1. I personally think the biggest culprit with the sequel is how long it took to launch.

I never got the hang of k-style or j-style completely. So I would just not play the game that way. Still seemed to do pretty good against most of the players that did do it though, though I think thats mostly just because I would throw them off because While I couldn't personally do k-or J style I'd seen enough players to know their habbits. I started playing with a knife sometimes because I never guarded anyway.

So a quick correction at 21:30 the DMCA takedowns were not by Masangsoft. What happened was a private server owner impersonated Maiet, the original rights holder to GunZ, and issued DMCA takedowns on videos which involved/promoted private servers that weren't the impersonator's own. Great video nonetheless, was a real treat to see GunZ get DOAG'd

YES, also before ijji got gunz there was "igunz" or "international Gunz" as like a test for na or something, that's when i first played and then the servers went down for a few months, THEN ijji gunz began in like 2007. now a pserver is named "igunz/international gunz" so it can get confusing

    • @Grizabeebles
      @Grizabeebles Год назад +8

The way copyright laws work, Masangsoft buying the rights and then sitting on them is probably the best way for them to support private servers and keep the game alive.
Licencing deals usually require products be made at regular intervals to renew the contract. If another company had retained the IP, fan servers and secondary content were always under threat of legal action.

and now we have another guy, claiming to be the "new IP owner", with a fake copyright for the game, DMCA-striking our community discord and DDOSing everyone out of their minds, while running a server off of SEO, claiming to be "official" and trying to make their website as generic-looking as possible so as to trick people who know nothing about the game into believing that their server is "official gunz"

Remembering GunZ always makes me feel really emotional, because it touches on my personal life and the way I treat things in real life. I remember first installing after seeing a few seconds of it on a Lan House, getting ready with my character and my dual SMGs, I remember getting my first kill and feeling awesome about it, doing strategies, peeking corners, leveling up and getting better weapons.
And then I remember one time I got into a server and started playing, it wasn't long before I got completely SLICED by another player and thought "Huh, that was fast", and then getting SLICED again by another player who killed me even faster, he seemed bulletproof while giving what looked like triple damage. I then started to pay attention, it was beautiful, they were flying around slashing everyone, they could only be stopped by someone playing the same way, and sometimes not even that, I was in complete awe... that until someone slashed me again.
That's when I closed the game and started researching what was that, it was The Butterfly, it was IF, it was IFF, it was... K-style, it was another level of playing, and I wanted that, no matter how long it would take, one time in the future I'll be the one flying like a Butterfly, I'll be the one on the top of the scoreboard using a blade and a shotgun. And 6 or so months later, it happened, I saw myself doing the exact same moves as those who would put me in awe, the enjoyment of the game and being able to toy with my enemy, even when we were close in skill level, this was unprecedented... This game and it's (yes, toxic) community taught me so much, it built character.
I think everyone should experience something like that, it really builds respect, determination, a humble sense of self and many other cornerstones of good character. My biggest "I love you" if you ever played this game back in the day.

Oh I've been waiting for the day nerdSlayer covered this for a long time! This game has been quite the treasure for me despite really never getting so competitive into it. Despite it being released way back in 2000s there hasn't been a game that captured it's feel yet. I heard it compared to Tribes, Unreal Tournaments, even Fortnite etc., but there was something about the tactility of how you moved and performing maneuvers after practicing hours in training rooms on how to do them.
I long for the day to see it come up again in the form of a next-gen game, but at least now I can see how the book was closed.

I've watched all the videos featured in this series and this one hits the hardest for me personally, this is THE computer game that started it all for me. To this day I haven't experienced such a mechanically intensive (SC:Brood War comes closest) and, honestly, liberating game. With MMOs and stuff you don't really feel like you're DOING what your avatar is doing. You press a button and 3 seconds later a fireball shoots. You press another, you start channeling a full party heal for 6 seconds. In GunZ, literally every keypress has an instant response, and every single thing your avatar does is because you have willed it to do so. All the crazy matrix shit happens because you yourself are doing all the crazy matrix shit on your keyboard and mouse. I don't think this kind of game would work in this day and age, but damn I miss it dearly.
Personally, playing in the Brazilian server, I know of many oldschool GunZ players who were to have success in other games. Kami and Matsukaze became household names in LoL, Sensi is a manager for Team Liquid's R6:Siege division, there was this amazing early PUBG player whose name escapes me, but in general a strong GunZ player can cut it in any other esport I feel like.

Thanks for the shoutout!! Didn’t see it coming. Here’s some facts I want the new viewers to be corrected on, no offense ❤:
    1. Quest mode was in the ijji release, wasn’t added later
    2. Clan war was also in ijji at release, released at same time. Ijji hosting was the “full” release as you said it, and both of these modes were released in summer of 2006.
    3. 2007 wasn’t even close to the last update, the game was given updates up until and past 2010 at least. It was updated past GunZ2’s release. I’d say GunZ 1 got MORE updates than GunZ 2 after it’s release.
    4. Clan Wars we’re not “usually 4v4”, it was actually kinda hard to find a 4v4, 2v2 and 3v3 were much more common, but tournaments were always 4v4.
    5. Source code was out much earlier than 2011… there was a private server released in 2006 with full p2w items for free called LegionGamers, another called Daemon’s Ring.
    6. ijji went under and aeria acquired them, had nothing to do with anything other than that.
    7. There was no “host” with p2p connections, ALL users connected to ALL other users, creating security issues, which we still have today lol, but the good servers have figured out the security part.
    8. Aeria GunZ had over 1K concurrent players until it died, and Aeria closed it as MAIET went under.
    9. RaiderZ, GunZ, GunZ2, all were supported by MAIET and went under at the same time, there wasn’t the narrative given in this video about them ditching one game for another.
    10. Strong suggest anyone who wants to play GunZ in 2023 to play not to play the servers mentioned in the video, FXPGUNZ is the best F2P non p2w server with a population.
    11. GunZ 2 was released and dead before GunZ 1 ever shut down, even on Steam. The dates are all messed up.
    12. MasangSoft bought MAIET after they filed bankruptcy, wasn’t any kind of merger, they’re still making updates on RaiderZ, and I believe them to still be working on GunZ.
    13. MasangSoft NEVER took down RUclips videos. It’s a private server posing as them. They support us having private servers, and are okay with it as there’s no western release. That’s directly from MS.
    14. Thanks for making this video. I know all these corrections feel complainy, but I really like the death of a game series and just want accuracy for my favorite game of all time.

The company reported themselves as merging, so that's not right. (FYI there is a difference between what actually happens, and what is reported). They aren't doing anything with GunZ, according to no updates. I didn't see any sources about the source code being leaked before then, but thanks for that information.
The "updates" GunZ got, don't really qualify much as updates to me. They basically got no new content after a number of years, and the point in me highlighting how little the game was updated is to prove that. Sure they were "updating the game", but more like plugging fires than creating anything new in the name of GunZ.
Your claim about MAIET handling all the games no offense shows your misunderstanding of how game development works, and thus my point concerning such. They can't just summon endless resources, and they did pivot very quickly especially compared to other popular Korean titles even. And when those titles failed (post GunZ) it was felt and seen immediately.
Thanks for the bit about MasangSoft not taking down YT videos, but unfortunately that contradicts my sources. Multiple even.
Your distinction about the server makes no point, and doesn't take away from mine. Not sure why you mentioned it even. Unless people want to debate host advantage, something that has existed before GunZ did. Connections are shared, sure. But a host still and always has under this framework enjoyed an advantage.
I stated the hardmode of Quest Mode was added, so you didn't hear my point correctly FYI.
Thanks for some of the corrections.

I only heard of this game once. A classmate tried to get me into it, but I wasn’t interested. What makes this conversation memorable for me is that another classmate was in the conversation and said “it’s not that great, just a flash game basically.”
Gunz fan was so stunned all he could say was “Flash Game?” With such an insulted, blank stare. I was sure had the conversation not been interrupted by class bell I would have witnessed a murder

I remember playing this game a lot, growing up. Sadly, I wasn't so good at it. The PvE parts got really dicey a lot of the times. Cheaters were quite common. At some point, I leveled up far enough to unlock new arenas, but I could no longer play with anyone below my level. So I was locked into a level bracket where people played significantly better than in the "open for all" starter arenas, and all of them had either a much higher level or (rarely) the same as me. Another issue were k-style players. In the newbie arenas, you didn't see so many k-style players, but they were basically all pubstompers that weren't fun to play against. But after my level-ups, k-style became a lot more common.
Learning k-style myself looked daunting and not very fun.
So eventually, I lost interest. The difficulty curve just spiked up so dramatically that I found myself hopelessly outclassed.

S4 League definitely needs a spotlight, especially being a game that could definitely be a big piece in the gaming market right now. The gamemodes being genuinely interesting and unique. The Chaser gamemode where you need to prioritize your survival but also be careful not becoming their target, Touchdown being a constant excitement and a focus on teamwork but also your solo skill to carry; both of them were perfection.
both the games had such an amazing soundtrack. They're so nostalgic, but even so had quality and focus on mixing with the gameplay. With the Chaser gamemode, you could feel your heart thumping along, terrified when the Chaser would find you. With Touchdown or any other gamemode, the music makes you feel like you're in a sports arena, with the announcer and others cheering for you specifically to win.
The avatars and many tools/weapons, were so much fun to play around (albeit pay2win due to the crappy company). There's plenty of potential right now, with skins dominating the market and fund a company. Especially now that anime's become much more mainstream, just think of the possibilities of an artstyle like S4 League.
The gameplay was both simple in terms of gameplay, but also something pros can shine. A face-paced game that keeps you on a constant rush, but can easily be slowed down with the right items. The movement was so much fun as well, simpler but similar to GunZ.
What's so amazing about these games is that they are practically forcing you to move. It's not like Apex or other games where you should hide at times; S4 League and Gunz incentivizes you to constantly be on the move. You can stand still or hide for a few seconds, sure. But with the gamemodes telling you to move, you move with the crowd.
What I typed is barely scratching the surface. Both of these games had style, any movement you made, anything you do - you feel cool. The announcers and sound effects are hidden gems especially.
There are definitely rough times, but damn does it feel good when you're the one dominating, as if the whole game revolves around you. These archaic and arcade games with style should come back, and I hope that companies will realize that a game like this would be perfect.

Another example of a glitch becoming a feature is skiing in Tribes. It was a physics glitch and was discovered during early testing (the beta, if I recall precisely). At first, the devs thought the tester moving so fast was hacking, and were going to remove them. But when they discovered how it was being done, they decided to keep it in.
Cue skiing becoming an iconic feature of the franchise.

I was just 12 at the shutdown of gunz but I played it since the IJJI version, thanks to family introducing me to online games at a VERY young age (Alongside their A.V.A)
I loved gunz and was baffled by how people kept owning me (in amazement), I didn't understand K-style nor did i know what it was called lol
i still remember the sadness I felt reading the game was going to shut down, I still get nostalgic over the old IJJI launcher.
Private servers I personally can't get into these days, most players are all very skilled. even back then i preferred grinding PvE content due to the skill difference.
Coming from someone whos sunk thousands of hours in CS:GO/TF2. I mostly never felt off put by being new to something but Modern day Gunz is too much for me.
Please consider doing Nexon's Combat arms, the handling of Combat arms last major update was extremely mishandled which lead to it going to the hands of vladof which just do a similar thing of simply keeping it running while milking it with little players left.

I remember playing in the international open beta. I had so much fun. Hackers were non-existent at the time. Butterfly was a rarity and wasn't called k-style, yet.
Then the game launched for real with microtransactions. K-style became pervasive and hackers creeped in. I'd have fun until level 30 with dual SMG, enraging the tryhards by "spraying" their legs with bullets where the sword couldn't block. But at some point, it just wasn't fun anymore as I didn't want to bother learning the hardcore stuff.
Still, I have fond memories of Gunz. I still have some songs from this game and ragnarok online in my ultimate playlist

I remember liking GunZ for it's movement fighting aspect and very low graphical requirement, that was a bit deceiving for young me however because I couldn't hope to compete with people with much better hardware and spends a lot of time on the game. There's no room for "casual" players anymore, you either spend hours upon hours learning K-Style or you can forget about playing PvP entirely, you can imagine a 10 year old boy who only gets to play a few hours on the weekend doesn't exactly have that kind of time or dedication.
I ended up playing co op quest mode for the majority of the time because it's much less demanding and even then, K style users would still dominate the field. I read somewhere that at one point, the developer removed K style only to add it back in, which is probably why they made GunZ 2. I really liked GunZ 2 as well because I actually stood a chance without having to learn K Style for once and it still retained that anime fighting shtick but it was obvious that people who used K Style wasn't happy with it and so it goes.
