Kika, a furniture store, was first opened in Vienna-Heiligenstadt in 1973 by Herbert Koch, who was the son-in-law of Rudolf Leiner Junior. The concept of the store, which was a "cash and carry" self-collection store, was a new and successful concept in Austria at the time. Over the years, the store evolved from a take-away market to a full-service furniture store with a wide range of products and services.
Since its inception, Kika has expanded its presence in Austria by opening 18 Leiner and 32 Kika furniture stores. In the year 2000, the company took its expansion efforts internationally by launching the Kika international sales channel. The focus of this expansion was on the Central and Eastern European markets. Notable store openings include a 31,000 square meter store in Prague in 2005, the first Kika furniture store in Croatia in 2006, and the first store in Bucharest, Romania in 2008.
In terms of online presence, Kika was recognized as Austria's best online store in the "Online Shopping Guide 2005." The company has a logistics center in St. Pölten, which boasts almost 100,000 square meters of storage space and 30,000 pallet storage spaces.
The furniture retail group kika/Leiner/Lipo, based in St. Pölten, announced on March 19, 2018 that it would close four of its 50 locations after a site review: the Lipo locations in Ansfelden and Langenzersdorf, the Leiner branch in Bruck an der Mur and the kika location in Wolfsberg (Carinthia). The restructuring also affects supplier relationships, the inventory management system, IT and the processes in the service warehouses.
After "turbulence" at the parent company Steinhoff, a credit insurance company was withdrawn at the beginning of June 2018 and, according to KSV, kika/Leiner was threatened with insolvency at the end of June 2018 due to the obligation to pay out vacation pay. After XXXLutz was rumored to be interested in a takeover, it was announced on June 14, 2018 that the Signa Holding of the Tyrolean real estate investor René Benko would buy the furniture chain Kika/Leiner from Steinhoff. After the purchase was approved - ahead of schedule - by the competition authority, the purchase became legally valid.
On August 16, 2018, it was announced that two more kika branches would have to close, in Vösendorf (Lower Austria) and Spittal an der Drau (Carinthia). According to a press report, up to 1,100 employees were laid off as a result of the closures.
In June 2023, the press reported the sale of kika/Leiner to Frank Albert's real estate company Supernova. The operational business went to former managing director Hermann Wieser for a symbolic sum of 3 euros. After announcing a restructuring course with the closure of 23 of the 40 branches and the layoff of 1,900 of the 3,900 employees, Wieser filed for insolvency for the company on June 12, 2023. The 23 branches were closed at the end of July 2023.
At the beginning of October 2023, the restructuring process of the insolvent Leiner & kika Möbelhandels GmbH was approved. On October 10, 2023, the new campaign "kikaLeiner - come closer to you" was presented as a new beginning with the merger of the two furniture chains.
In November 2024, Kika/Leiner filed for bankruptcy again.
On December 4, 2024, the company withdrew the restructuring plan because no investor could be found. This means that (Leiner and kika) are bankrupt. Kika and Leiner will finallay close the last shops by the end of January 2025.
