Early Fall Bass Fishing! (Finesse Baits And Big Smallmouth)

- We're exploring new water in search of big bass and taking you along for the ride on the Great Lakes! Don't miss any of the details as we adapt lure color, size, and retrieve to dial in a pattern for Smallmouth. Watch as the guys start off with power techniques like swimbaits and topwater but adapt with changing conditions, and continue catching fish with a ned rig, tube, and hair jig.
Fishing Lake Michigan is all about adapting to changing conditions. Today started out with wind, settled to slick calm and high sun, then a lightning storm blew in. With no history to rely on the guys had to adapt on the fly, trying different presentations and locations (they ran over 50 miles!) to keep catching fish. They caught fish all day long and were vocal about the choices they were making and reasoning behind them. If you want to understand the mindset behind fish catching, this video is for you!
Below you'll find links to all the baits used in the video. We've included the exact models, sizes, and colors for each presentation. As promised, we've also included the jerkbait colors we use to adapt to changing conditions. Finally, you'll find links to our favorite rod and reel combos from the day with exact specs on each model. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

I'm sure they're a pain to edit but these longer videos are much appreciated. You guys have so much to teach that 20 minutes just isn't enough sometimes!
Frank H, I agree, lol.
I'd rather have a shorter video where they actually teach something and not just them fishing
Love the dynamic between the two of you and how you work together to figure out patterns and break down the water. Awesome video as always boys🔥

I wouldn’t just like to also say the way you break down these techniques is really second to none. It’s patient and thorough but also is jam packed with legit good information.
You know what the fact that you 2 came out an said you missed 20 fish in a day with the absolute most dialed in gear you can possibly have makes me feel a lot better when it happens to me
Yeah I enjoy the longer videos too. Everytime Matt laughs it cracks me up and makes me laugh. You can really tell how much he loves fishing!
So Tim got the big AND little fish of the day, haha. I love to watch the teamwork and playing off of each other to catch more fish. Looked like fun. Great video!
Another great video by two great bassers. Thanks Matt and Tim.
Thanks so much guys! So much of what you present transitions well to those of us who fish the banks primarily. Up here in MI that fall transition is tight, but you can still get a bite!
Matt, love your jig heads on the swimbaits in the spring for those smallies here on Lake St Clair!👌🏻
Nice job!👊🏻💥🎣
Damn it you guys are soooooo lucky.. blessed actually.
You get to fish for a living without being on tour or dealing with the politics and rigors of sponsorships and booth work and speeches ect.
I know you guys do that stuff a little and travel a great deal but you're your own bosses! 🤙🇺🇲
Epic fishing day! It’s always good to see you two out slaying them together. Great video guys.
Hey I'm with you on that chartreuse on the jerkbait if they are nipping, to give em a target. Some days it can be too much and backing off to Tablerock, or even TN shad with that slight flash of chartreuse on the tail can make all the difference! And some days Northern secret with that internal chartreuse hue is the deal!
Gotta love waking up to Matt and Tim just knocking em out. Thanks guys. Makes me want to visit home and get back on Lake Huron.
A lot of us grew up on the great lakes. It's always great when the boys head north
Absolute killer video! I enjoyed it very much! Great catches, and really great information. You guys do a great job, and keep it coming. We definitely appreciate you both!
This my favorite type of video. Both together, fishing new water, catching some toads, teaching along the way.
Love great lakes smallmouth! Thanks guys!
Wow!! Fantastic video, as previously mentioned in other people's comments here, so much to gain from this video, partner fishing, switch-ups, follow-up baits/rods, colors, even playing it smart with the weather. Thanks, thanks, thanks for this one!!!!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one that loses fish! Good to hear
The BEST Channel on RUclips! If you guys ever need an editor I would be glad to edit for you guys!
Love these guys. To show my appreciation, I’m going to start a go-fund-me to get Matt some suspenders before this turns into a plumbing channel. 😂
Bwahahaha. Starts? We've been toying with a plumbing segment for years now 😂
This video is amazing. Love listening to your thought process. Practical advice. I can watch this all day long. Thank you.
Lake Michigan is my home lake and it gets overwhelming. Usually don’t venture out to far but I’m thinking it’s time. Great work !
Thank you for en exceptional fishing and training video. The time you spent discussing your presentations.
I hope you can do many more of these great videos.
Man what a blast!
Love the early uploads. Matt and Tim don't miss
Tim: "Where's my hair jig?"
Matt: "In that smallmouths mouth"
CLASSIC!
Hahaha! That's just about summed it up
Still waiting for the South America video!
Love when you fish and explain.
Matt and Tim,
I think it’d be really cool for us viewers if you could periodically show what your fishfinder screens are showing in these long vids!
Awesome video guys love it! 👍👊
I miss my time up north fishing smallies. It was definitely one of the highlights of being stationed in upstate NY.
You guys always post great content. Thanks , much appreciated.
Awesome freaking video guys
Great video guys. Thanks from Western Kentucky.
I had to name this one 'Two guys fishing' the best yet I've seen. I love how you cast side by side - others can learn I hope. As a photographer I wish the sun was over the shoulder but we can't have everything. One question why do you fish with a left handed open spinner and a right handed bait-caster? Is that maybe the reason you lost some? Holding the pole in the dumb hand? At almost eighty years young I had a hard time learning the pole goes in the strong arm regardless of the reel [I am converting to all left handed bait-casters] but If I can do it, ya'll can too. Blessings.
I love it that you don't scream and holler like idiots when you fish and have stupid background music. Who fishes with music blaring?
This video just makes me want to hang out and fish with you guys so bad. Great content. I had a blast watching this one! And the part about not being afraid to experiment with color gives me hope for the fall bite. Thank you so much guys.
I didn't know there was such thing as fishing roadies.
I would love to get a chance to get out on one of the Great Lakes and chase big smallmouth. Love the longer video thanks guys
The hair jig is definitely my favorite bait to throw i. Fresh and saltwater applications it never fails
HOORAY FOR TACTICAL BASSIN i wanna go fishing for small mouth so bad in clear water
Great info!
Great fishing,thanks for the video!
Would love to see you guys do a video on fall fishing on Lake Martin Alabama
Catching 12 in spots isn't a very fun video to watch. Coosa river would be better, them spots are just different and so mean. Martin spots are long lean fish and it's such a infertile lake.
@@Mjones8383 and if anyone can catch the bigguns on Martin, it would be Matt and Tim. Martin is the most beautiful lake in Alabama. I'd also like to see them on the Coosa too.
The clouds dont look like much of anything, but they look a little bit like everything. 😁
Fantastic video again gentlemen! You should make your way up to Lake Champlain next time...
I love those dark sleepers!
I love lake Michigan. It's the best
Matt and Tim ---If you guys are still around on your way back home if you pass through Indiana you'll probably love Brookville Reservoir. Giant smallmouth, largemouth, walleye and Muskie. Seen probably a high 40"er muskie caught last week on a red eye shad by a guy trying to catch bass on a medium heavy lol.
Michigan has been weird this fall. the week you filmed this i also had tons of shortstrikes in a nearby river to lake Michigan. okishira and spark shad were the savior. or that neon bone ito shinner. the pressure i think is a factor for us as well, tons of rain storms rolling through every few days.
Same thing going on here in central Minnesota. Okashira head with a hazedong shad and a tiny size 5 Berkeley flicker shad has been the only thing I can get the fish to actually eat. And yeah, crazy rain every 4-5 days and then just abnormal heat for this time of year
I lost a 9-10 lb bass on the little 1/4 oz dark sleeper at my pond this weekend but man that thing is a fish magnet
You guys should do some videos on how to read gps maps of a new lake and why you pick the spots you pick I’m new to boat fishing in big big lakes and sometimes I just don’t know where to start and what my graph means
Love the AFTCO gLOVES.. They work well comfy also!
Ned ,tube ,hair jig bread and butter northern small mouth baits was waiting to see how long it would take you guys to put down those reaction baits😭😭😭👍
Ernie's in the house!🤙🤙
Last week we pulled in multiple 4lbers, with an occasional 5+.
They were a bit tentative still. Willing to chase, but we did best on finesse still.
Across a week, the water surface temp dropped about 8 degrees, and we had lots of success when the waves picked up, 2-3'.
Monster small jaw 👏
Tank smallmouth bass brother. I find if I get short strikes from smallies I just repetitive cast them. They are so aggressive sometimes they will hit it again.
You mentioned a lightening app - mind sharing?
Love your videos you guys are the best out there
The one I use is literally called "lightning" and I've got it set to go off for any strike within 10 miles.
It's really nice to see you guys. This made my week!
Also there is something I genuinely want to know: do you guys get bass thumbs, or are your thumbs all callused by now.
Do you have a special hold that minimizes the amount of cuts you get, or are my thumbs just super soft?
The dark sleeper is great and so is the mag draft but- if you make the mistake of taking either one out of it's packaging and not returning it- the next time you go to fish it it's probably gonna be all kinked up and ruined. I wondered why every time I saw someone fish one they had a tub full of them still in the packaging, now I know why.
Hi Guys, another great one. Noticed down in the notes that you are loading your crank bait reel with all fluro. Not using the braid to long leader?
Im in NJ and ive been slayin with a erratic retrieve with a fluke or any soft plastic ripped like a jerk bait
I have a couple dark sleepers but forget I have them. Might have to give them a shot this weekend on st clair. Have you guys came up to Saginaw bay? There’s some pigs in there and the largemouth fishing is great too.
Hey guy love the video, I’m not sure if you read the comments but I’ve been following you guys for while and I love the video, I would love it if you could do a video like this but also show us what the spot looks like on a graph because I’m never sure what it looks like, and I’m not talking about just a graphing video, I’m talking about a video like this with a few graph clips
Should've tried to come to lake Erie!! So close yet so far away
Found evergreen sb 105 locally in Indiana for $12.99 sure beats the TW $17.99 price but they only have the 105 in full metal or clear. Honey Creek in Bargersville.
i dont get how you guys arent clacking eachother with your rods all the time standing that close. lol. it is cool to see though, you guys are so efficient and clean sharing the front of the boat together. true professionals right hurrr.
also im going to smith mountain lake nc this weekend and if you know what that is maybe u can give me some advise i wanted to fish the docks with dropshots and stuff but i dont know if the transition is ganna make me go deeper and find hard structure and left over healthy grass
Great video guys. What was the water temp ?? I'm in the northeast and we are likely having the same air temps as Michigan. That said I was out yesterday and water temps were 65 and the fish still weren't firing yet and were super deep chasing bait, ie 38 feet. Trying to figure out when they will start moving shallower.
Great video! Thx! Could you do a video on the processes you use to determine where you are going to fish? As you mention, you were a long way fro the ramp. How do you select your spots to try? Thx!!
Question for you guys; The robo-ned worm , is it as buoyant as some of the ned counterparts in the industry? the TRD's and such? Or does it tend to lay a bit flatter as you drag the ned.
Nice content! I'll be heading to Trinity Lake in a couple of weeks and can't wait to try a few of the suggested techniques. Given the conditions you had on this day, what weight did you use for the short shanked tube heads?
Q How long are you guys going to be able to stay an fish
how many days do you have off to spend on the Great Lakes
I’m going fishing Friday Saturday and Sunday up there
Hope to buy you dinner and talk about fishing
Thanks Kirk
Do you guys have any videos/tutorials on fishing the hair jig? Do you just fish it like a regular jig only with lighter tackle?
This was me the other day on CL.
I smashed 'em on a 1/2 oz mutsugorou dark sleeper today. I did notice that after like the 3rd catch both eyes were gone though lol
will smallmouth also go to hard structure and left over ripe grass during the transition?
He was catching Smallmouth I catch 95% of my smallies on rocks and flats
@@lucasteneyck8577 ok thx
OMG!!! Man that looks like fun! I know you don’t give specifics to the location your fishing but what state/city did you launch from?
Just FYI Some of your links to the lures and gear isn't working right
Other then that great video and great fishing
Hey guys, I'm not sure if you've already done a video on this but I've noticed everyone uses alot of different poles, reels, lines for specific bait/lures. Could you give me some info on that or make a video of it? I only bank fish so I can't carry alot of poles anymore, I do have 3 though. I'm a beginner by the way lol any little tips will help.
Way to inude the Goby catch.
We pulled in 2-3 of those each day 😂
How do you guys take a bend out of the tail on a dark sleeper? I need to start leaving them in their packaging
New to the channel and love it. Question.. Do you tie all your lures or do you use a swivel?
How would you guys target a Tennessee River lake now with all the floating eel grass and hot water
Please do a short video on how to keep fish hooked when they jump and prevent hooks from coming out in finesse tactics like Ned rigs and finesse swimbaits
This isn’t a religious channel?
@@guad512 I’m confused
@@rich5916 all you can do is let em play out and pray they don’t come off? 😉
@@guad512 oh haha I think I am being too eager in most cases. But I think there are other things you can do like holding the rod the opposite way the fish are swimming? And keeping the tip low to prevent jumping? Wanted the guys thoughts on what else they do
@@rich5916 I hear you! If you look closely, you’ll see them going along for the ride in the direction the fish is swimming while maintaining tension? My praying joke had to do with when they jump! It’s all about luck at that point no matter who the angler is. Hope this is of help to you?
Great video! Always very informative! Question: Would you recommend the dark sleeper for river small mouth (Arkansas & Oklahoma area)? Seems like such a great bait for you guys, I'm just wondering how well you think it would do in river waters vs lakes? Thanks again!
They work great for me on a smallmouth lake in Texas! 👍
Remember: a bass is a bass….
What depth are you fishing? It has to be a good day when you need the net.
our lake is 200 feet deep i just slay them in that deep water there is another bridge under the bridge to the side like 100 feet down an bass on that road bed they will bed on top of that bridge that deep
an we got oak trees in like 60 feet of water the bass will bed on top of them oak tree limbs in that deep water.when pro come here they have always said this lake has no bass i said in 65 feet you just hammer 5 an 6lbers all day long
Hey brother, what’s the best saltwater spinning combo do you recommend for all around fishing, I’ve seen ur buyers guide series but I’m still stuck and honestly overwhelmed
Are you guys in presqule Michigan? I love going there
If you don't mind me asking, what size is the boat you guys are on?
Those bass have been getting big off the invasive gobies.
Way fatter than they used to be 20+ years ago on the great lakes.
Will you guys review a googan squad product
How are you guys working the dark sleepers?
What test braid do you guys usually use during fall?
Flip flops boys? Lmao
I’ve heard that with smallies, that the dark one in the pack is the most aggressive! Is this true?
Gear for a jerk bait: medium rod but fast or moderate or slow action? What line do you recommend? What
was this the Great Lakes of New York. ?
Can I still use the Dark Sleeper if I don’t live around the Great Lakes?
Do you guys have any plans to fish lake Ontario???
