  • You've been waiting for this one! Everything you need to know about jerkbaits, all in one place! We're covering everything from underwater footage of bait actions and bass strikes, to specifics on jerkbait retrieves, color, and bait selection. This is the most in-depth we've ever gone on the subject and you don't wan to miss it!
We love jerkbaits! Their ability to trigger a feed response in wary bass is remarkable and once mastered, is something you can use to consistently trigger bites from big bass. We're covering basics like how and when to throw a jerkbait, to how to adapt retrieves with water temperature, to how to replace hooks and properly balance a Megabass Vision 110.
Below you'll find links to all the baits and equipment discussed in the video. You'll also find information on related videos, color recommendations, hook upgrades, and budget gear. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Mat, you give the best seminars. Your details are spot on. I’ve fished for 72 yrs., I’m 77 yrs. old very shortly. I have fished tournaments for 45-46 yrs. and have followed top fishermen RClunn, DBrouwer, KGB, and many other through the different eras. You are so dead on it is amazing to me, when I look back in my old tapes, and recordings ( R/R, 8 track, cassette, disc. and sponge) I here those guys saying many of the same thing, but with far less details and reasons why. I listened to several Pro Fishermen @ a B.A.S.S. Tournament standing around after day #1, talking. It was mentioned that RUclipsr had talked about a new bait that had just come out. Immediately another PF said what does he know….he’s RUclipsr! …I thought about that for a split second, and butted in on the conversation and said that’s a incorrect statement. There are many great fishermen, that haven’t the time due to owning a company, having a large family, I know even ONE that will never fish on the LORDS DAY ( in his words). And I would put him up against any of ya! He fish 4 -5 days a week and in
Tournament Lakes and I most every time know body comes close to him. He sold his company and is now training/teaching his grand kids how to really fish with full understanding (60 + yrs exp.) and they are 7-9…get ready to move over. My mouth sometimes when I hear 👂 a stupid statement I have to respond.
Mat, obviously you and others fit into my explanation. (Others just don’t want to direct their time and focus on one thing). That is what is required to fish PA’s tournaments and to be just average.

Great video dude. You are so informative. I don’t think anyone I can think so that does it better. The details you go to are so important and I’m saying this for your readers. It’s the little things that makes a great fisherman. You explain fishing 🎣 like you are in the middle of a retrieval of a bait. Thanks buddy.

I could watch Matt talk about jerkbaits for hours. I never used to have any success with them. It turns out that I was using poor baits and the wrong action. I bought a few Vision 110s and started using Matt's retrieve. They are some of my favorite lures in the spring and fall now. Thanks Matt!

The BEST way to eliminate 'line memory' is this: 1) Cut your lure off.
    2) Put your boat in drive.
    3) Let out all the coiled line behind the boat for ½ a mile or so.
    4) Once it has stretched sufficiently, slowly reel it in while applying slight pressure with a leader straightener (you can use a proper fly fisherman's leather leader straightener, a soft, wet cloth, or just your wet fingers). This does several things for you. The warm, wet friction heats, cleans, stretches, and straightens the line, eliminating the memory and the need to respool. This saves you money and saves the environment. It works!

"It only takes 20 or 30 minutes to dial it in." Excellent point. That sums up bass fishing for me; you know within ½ an hour whether it's gonna happen or not. Not saying you can't win a tournament in the last ½ hour-I HAVE-but, generally speaking, you can gauge bass' activity level in the 1st ½hour.

The floatation didn’t change and they hook everything. Someone else may have had a bad experience with them, but I’m just saying they worked very well for me. Need to keep some pliers handy with them. I’ve even put them on some of my cranks. Short shank EWG, standard and x heavy trebles. I ordered about 100 packs of different sizes. I fish a jerkbait a ton. One huge suggestion I can give a starting JB angler is always hit the slack. Leave alot of slack and hit the bait at the end of the swing. Once you start getting bites you can dial in your system from there. If you can't get bit, you can't learn. Literally bounce the rod off of the bait...hit the slack and go back slack, no pulling at all!
Rods are important if you get into this, but I can catch a JB fish on many rods, crisp with some give is best, for bouncing off the bait, and keeping the fish on once hooked. Once again, you can't learn if you can't get bit...get bit first, then worry about them staying pinned the best and so on.
My favorite setup is an Orochi xx Jerkbait special with an Aldebaren and 10 lb Seagar Invizex. That is not necessary though, I was just proving my point to a buddy with a 20 yr old Curado and a No name generic rod with an X-80 trick darter the other day.
BTW, funny you show that Deadly Black Shad as one of your favorites. If I absolutely need to catch a walleye on a Jerkbait, that Deadly Black Shad is my go to. I use it in cloudy and clear sunny conditions as well.

I used to hate throwing a jerkbait ‘cause I didn’t get it. Then one day I got 13 rat bass on 15 casts and I decided to dedicate some time to learn. The next year I built a dedicated jerkbait rod and caught two 8.5# toads on a clown colored 110jr. Now I have at least one tied on 12 months out of the year.

It's important to get a medium power moderate action rod. I use a medium power moderate action. The reason is for thin wire hooks an treble hooks. A rod with a parabolic bend is important to have to keep treble hooks an thin wire hooks pinned in fishes mouth. As far as retreave snap wrist back to where you started so a jerk bait will recieve the side to side action. Also you need to pause jerkbaits. In warmer weather 3 to 5 seconds. In the 5 seconds range or possibly more when it's really hot or cold.

I fish mostly ponds or small lakes here in Georgia. It is hard for me throw $20 on one lure with the potential of losing it. What jerk bait and color would you recommend for my situation? Loved the video by the way!

Check out the Megabass X Nanahan series for downsized jerkbaits. Same action as a 110, but only 75mm, and it comes in plus one and plus 2. Awesome little baits.

As a former jerk bait junkie, I have to say the rapala x-rap has “IT”, and not just for bass, and the mirrolure mirrodine was another favorite and simultaneously works super shallow or as a countdown bait because it’s lipless

      @mikek3638 Год назад

Agreed about the xraps. Had a day on them earlier this year in northern MI. Was working it incredibly fast and the smallies were slamming it.

That world diver is the most frustrating bait I've fished. It absolutely HAMMERS them, yet it will foul itself mid cast somehow if you are working it hard. I hope they fix that. I'd also love it in a 3 hook bait.
