beauty of joseon is the best sunscreen i’ve ever tried, i can’t stand the greasy/oily feeling of most sunscreens i’ve tried and the beauty of joseon one actually makes me excited to wear sunscreen!!
I am so ready for some spring and summer weather with beauty of joseon sunscreen and my new sun hat lol. I also like to use it on my hands when driving since it doesn't make everything I touch after applying white and greasy!
Yes I look forward for it too because I can’t stand greasy sunscreens. But it’s not for those strong sunny days, try out the EVY Foam one in the brown can if you want something not too heavy but super heavy duty sunscreen for those extremely sunny days
Same i was actually searching for sunscreens in my country and didnt understood the pa nor did i searched what it meant and now i know and very satisfied so i could be more aware on what im getting into😊
Biore is actually a Japanese brand. As for the blue dye in sunscreen. Some Asian sunscreen has it for color correcting or 'brightening' features (usually in Asia that means making you look fairer). In fact Biore UV has one specifically with that. Tried that, nice texture and all but the brightening part is not my jam.
I'm a sunscreen nerd, and I love the visual with the different active ingredients; trying to explain this to others is so hard, but that makes it so easy!
I tried so many chemical sunscreens and I always without an exception react to them with redness, pimples, itchiness etc. so I only use mineral sunscreens (paula‘s Choice calm spf 30) Until I‘ve discovered beauty of Joseon. It just blows my mind that I can put on a chemical/hybrid sunscreen without getting irritated. Love it! I order it from Stylevana to Germany.
Stock up. I just discovered Stylevana I was nervous because of long delivery because of being in HK but it’s worth the wait. They are having a sale right now 2 BOJ for $17. I have tons of sunscreen and toners in my cart, spending a bunch of stuff for me and my kids’ skin. I love that they have exp dates on their product. My last purchase has a pretty long shelf like, into 2024 I think. I tried Skin1004 Madagascar Centella and I thought it’d be too greasy but no, love it as well. Pyung Yul and Instree toners are in my cart as well. Dr Dray spoke highly of these products too. So. Excited. 😍
@@jessicaal415 Wow, that’s a great deal! I just bought a two-pack BoJ sunscreen from YesStyle for $22.50 the other day. The BoJ Revive eye serum was only $12.75, so I stocked up. There was an additional coupon for my cart which then brought everything below the free shipping, lol, so I added Etude moisturizer. 😂
Same here I simply can’t use any chemical sunscreens from the USA. My kid and I starchy are highly allergic chemical sunscreens (lots of hives). But I’m fine with Korean hybrids. There must not be the same ingredients? I usually do a patch test.
I'm in Germany too and i had the same problem until I tried Rossman's own brand Sun Ozon sonnenfluid spf50. It's the thin white bottle. Can even apply it near my eyes. Try it. Last time i checked it only cost about 4euros.
Despite being a pale, easily burned white chick who knows better, for years I struggled to wear sunscreen daily because I hated how it felt and smelled. A couple of years ago I started following Dr. Dray and she convinced me to try Asian sunscreens. Such a huge difference! I now wear sunscreen almost daily. It has made a noticeable difference in my roseacea too. I'm currently using that Missha Sun milk. I like it well enough, but the Purito has been my favorite.
Thank you for yet another extremely educational video! While I realize the majority of your followers are of the younger generations, please don't forget about us oldies who are (finally) able to benefit from all this wonderful information (so us in the 60+ sphere). We are dealing with decades of skin neglect through ignorance, so hoping you might dedicate one upcoming video to products that may help reverse (wishful thinking) problems like glycation, etc. Personally, I would love to see you discuss the pros/cons of the Matrixyl product lines: 3000, Synth-6 targeting horizontal/forehead wrinkles, and the newest one Morphomics targeting more vertical wrinkles like nasolabial. Olay also has a dedicated moisturizer that is a combination Niacinamide + Peptides (It seems to absorb well and give a slight 'tightening' feel, although I have not be able to find the percentage of Niacinamide in it ... Olay's claim is 99% which doesn't make sense to me).
I’m with you! Going to be 60 this year and still don’t wear sunscreen. Our generation, as you said, just didn’t know. Just like the smokers of the 50s didn’t know it was bad for their health. I may try one of these and hope to hell I get in the habit of using it. 😅
@@Sufferingsassafrass I'm hitting 70 in the fall, and I've tried doing the sunscreen thing a few times and under makeup they were all disasters. Unfortunately, I'm still a smoker although have been able to cut back but not totally kick the habit ... while most likely doing major damage to the body, has kept me out of the homicide detectives grasp. Back in our teenage and 20-something years, no one saw a dermatologist ... not even sure they existed. Then as the years went by (working, running a household, dealing with kids, etc.) who really had the time/energy to even think about what was drooping, sagging, losing volume ... above and below the neck. My goal now is to try to undo a little of that damage and make the undertakers job of making me look presentable in the casket a little easier.
@@cherylmyers5095 I've been using two very good tinted sunscreens, alternating between Australian Gold SPF 50 and Bliss Block Star SPF 30. Both are available for around $20 at Ulta (Australian Gold) or Target and WalMart (Bliss Block Star). I use them as a one-step sunscreen, primer and creamy base/foundation on my fair-skinned 63 year old face. They both work well over lightweight moisturizers and under loose or pressed mineral powder foundation, if I want a little heavier coverage. Most of the time I just set them with a light dusting of translucent pressed powder, well-buffed with a good quality brush. I have rosacea, and trying to color match its moodiness with traditional liquid or cream foundations became impossible about twenty years ago. These sunscreen products both have a nice, semi-satin finish, and contain mineral-only active sunscreen ingredients, so they don't cause any extra irritation around my eyes. At times when my skin is particularly sensitive, like during dry, windy weather ("Santa Ana" winds here in Southern California), I use the Australian Gold as both of these sunscreens do have some fragrance and the Block Star's scent is very citrusy and can be irritating to my face. They both remove well with the two-step "double cleanse" method that seems to be the norm these days; the Australian Gold is very water resistant and sometimes needs a little micellar water as a final step for complete removal. I should note that I also live in an area with very hard water; sometimes my cleansing routine ends with a final wipedown rinse with distilled water on a cotton pad. I have found great improvement in the texture of my skin since starting to wear sunscreens on my face every single day, a habit I started only about 10 years ago. Now if I could just find some magic potion for the sagging jowls, droopy hooded eyelids, deep vertical lines around my lips...I have a high-mileage face, but the sunscreen helps by not allowing new age spots to crash the party. And of course, you know you have to quit smoking, I did thirty years ago and have no regrets. Good luck!
Recently started using Beauty of Joseon and I love it ❤. I have super oily skin and was using SuperGoop (avoiding white cast, I have dark skin). Joseon keeps my oiliness at a minimum with NO white cast . Now, I use my Supergoop as a highlighter on high points of my face.
Biore is J-Beauty btw and they make a lot of great skincare products including sunscreen. I've tried this one before and it has a nice gel cream texture that absorbs quickly, so ideal for those with oily skin. But I believe it has fragrance and a bunch of citrus extracts that could be irritating though, so sensitive skin proceed with caution. Hope this helps 😊
Love the super detailed explanations - thank you! Purito and many other brands have official amazon storefronts. There’s nothing wrong with buying from those.
Actually, European sunscreens have far higher PPD protection. PA++++ is only at PPD 16. La Roche Posay’s UVMune400 is at PPD 46, Altruist PPD 54 and Isdin Eryfotona PPD 61.
@@PassionPno Those sunscreens you just listed are the exception and shouldn't be used to represent European sunscreens as a whole. The vast majority of European sunscreens don't disclose their exact PPD ratings and usually don't go much higher than the required minimum, which is 1/3 of the UVB protection. So in the case of a SPF50 sunscreen the PPD would still be around 16/17 for most European sunscreens which is equivalent to PA++++.
I’m in Australia and we have some amazing sunscreens I can only tolerate mineral sunscreens on my face and for body chemical needs to be fragrance free…..mature dry sensitive skin. I’m loving Naked Sunday Collagen Mineral Glow for my face it’s so hydrating, hint of colour, touch of glow, slightly blurs pores and fine lines so is perfect on its own for everyday and plays well under makeup. Bondi Sands make some really good sunscreens at a good price.
I’ve seen a few skincare influencers mention that whatever sunscreen they’re reviewing covers up the entire uva spectrum up to 400nms, but I thought that no sunscreen protects higher than 370nms, which is why the la roche uvmune was such a big deal, it contains the first filter to protect against that missing 30nms and so is the only one that protects up to 400nms
I thought the same thing. I think Avene has a new filter as well (Triasorb) that claims to cover extra long rays. I'm not sure how they compare though.
Most UVA filters offer at least some protection in the 400nm range, Avobenzone and Tinosorb M being among the best. It's just that the UVMune400 filter offers peak protection at around 380-400nm and that make it so sensational.
First of all: I really like your videos! Thank you for educating us ☺️ I'm from Germany and here in Europe the UV filters "benzophenone" are forbidden cause they are carcinogenic. The thing is: We also don't use "octocrylene" because they decompose into benzophenone. So I would not recommend buying SPFs that contain these filters 🙏🏻
Which sunscreens, if any, did she recommend that contain benzophenone (which apparently also goes by diphenylmethanone or Diphenyl keton?) it would save me some research as I’m now looking up the ingredients for everything recommended here to make sure that none contain this ingredient!😮 thanks for the heads up. I had no idea.
Hi Dr Idriss, Love you & your channel! Are you familiar with the Purito scandal of 2020 where the their popular Centella Green Level Unscented Sun sunscreen “SPF 50+”, was shown to only provide SPF 19? I was wondering if this has impacted your, of any of your viewers’, trust in their sunscreens? The company’s response to the findings, was really blasé and left many of us afraid to purchase from this brand in particular, as well as the manufacturer of other K-beauty sunscreens (including Dear Klairs). I realize that some sunscreens sold in the US, have also been tested, and shown not to contain the SPF advertised, so it could happen anywhere and from a video I just watched by cosmetic chemist & You Tuber Lab Muffin, there are a number of reasons this could’ve happened so not sure if they were deceitful or just negligent, but the way the company responded really affected my faith in purchasing from them. Here’s an article about it, and the problem across the board on sunscreen testing, in case anyone is curious. nymag.com/strategist/2020/12/what-went-wrong-with-puritos-sunscreen.html
@@ScoobyDoosMomhere the ones from missha and scinic :) it's relatively easy to check cause octocrylene (as in these cases) are uv filters so it's one of the first ingredients if you google a product :) Of course Dr. Idriss is a medical professional and I am not! It's just what those experts in my country/ EU told us 🤷🏻♀️ I don't think it's worse to use these sunscreens instead of no sunscreen :) On the other hand it's just easy to buy one without these ingredients I think :)
@@ScoobyDoosMom One thing you should know is that all of the products listed here are non-mainstream in Korea and Koreans don't even know they exist. In Korea, Anessa by SHESEIDO, Biore UV by Kao, and LRP are popular. We also favor Physiogel (By LG) and Round-Lab for Korean brands. There is also AHC, which was acquired by Loreal (known as Carver Korea)
@@Shinkaterucan you provide any of the websites where these can be purchased? When I look it up in the US the only place I can find them seems to be second sale sites.
You never failed to deliver!! Heart you so much. I've been trying a different K-sunscreen every time I finish a bottle and boy do I love the options! I don't think I can ever go back to US sunscreens considering their price range, the options and cosmetic elegance.
Great round up. Best sellers currently in Korea are the Round Lab Birch juice moisturizing sun cream and the Abib sunstick. Hope you can take a look at them next time. Also, I would love to hear more about ‘K’ skin care in general. Love your channel!
Beauty of joseon is my new lover for life since a week. I ordered it 2 weeks ago on stylevana but realized they ship from China which I don't like because we don't know how they manipulate the items and products there. The sunscreen is heaven on my skin though, NO burning or discomfort at all. It is calmy and refreshing for my redness and rosecea and it is so soothing and moisturizing for my sensitivity. I just ordered 2 others today but on the brand website to make sure it is sent from South Korea. Thank you very much to have dived into details here. Very appreciated Dr.shereene 🥰🥰🥰
I've read terrible reviews by people who struggles with pigmentation. It doesn't block visible light so people end up struggling with worsening of pigmentation and melasma.
Great info! I recently tried the beauty of joseon on my very sensitive skin and it's amazing!!! I would love to see a video from you on how to address pore congestion. Thank you for all of your videos!
I placed an order for 2 of the sunscreens mentioned from Stylevana on January 31st, and just received a shipment notification today. Be prepared to wait!
I placed an order at YesStyle for the double pack of BoJ (among other things) on Wednesday 3/15 and received an email that they are shipping 3/18 (today).
I love how you make it all easy to understand and make skincare so simple. I've been watching your vids and i learned so much and still learning. The "more is not more" helped me everytime, mostly when trying new products on my face. Kudos and more power beautiful angel. Thank you, you are my "to go watch" always when it comes to skin problems and skin care routine.
Love this video! You’ve got to try the Skin 1004 Hyalu-Cica water for serum sunscreen. It has been so great for my maturing dry skin. I like it better than BOJ.
Thank you so much for the video! I always wondered what the PA system meant so thanks for the explanation :) and the visualization of how much the individual filters Cover und the UVA/UVB spectrum was really nice as well… I ordere the beauty of jeoson sunscreen and it’s probably gonna arrive soon so this just made me even more excited to try it out myself :)
These Saturday videos have been wonderful! Just fyi Stylevana can take forever for delivery. I was going to report them cause it took them 21/2 months to get my shipment. I emailed them and they do respond. I ordered once again and still took a long time although not as bad. Just an fyi for anyone ordering from them…
@@kmjdebay crazy thing is they were in stock. Thankfully I didn’t need the items right away. Read somewhere that others had issues as well… I’d still order from them as they’re pretty cheap in price 👍🏻
This is the best video for k beauty sunscreens ! You are the only one to list the spf ingredients which is very helpful for someone with Rosacea ! Thank you ! Great job !
BOJ and Scinic (not the stick, the Enjoy super mild sun essence) sunscreens have been my favourites for two years. The latter is the more affordable option.
In South Korea, sunscreens are regulated as cosmetics, and the US doesn’t recognize the new gen filters as active ingredients. It is legal for US consumers to order cosmetics from abroad for personal use.
My holy grail Korean sunscreen is the isnt tree hyaluronic water sun gel and the skin1004 hyalu-cica water-fit sun serum. Absolutely amazing on skin overall.
The skin1004 hyalu cica is sooo underrated, it's so lightweight even when applying proper (1/4tsp) amounts. Much lighter than the BOJ in my opinion. Also, the packaging is super convenient. An absolute holy grail daily sunscreen for me too.
That’s mine as well. I think the BoJ is second, only because it leaves a slight white cast. A Japanese one I like is HadaLabo, except that it’s in a tub which is rather inconvenient.
Note to my friends who have issues with fragrance: that Missha sunscreen is nearly unbearable. Not only is the fragrance cloying and thick, it also smells like the place old people go to die (I'm not young anymore, so I can make that joke). It's dreadful. I don't hate fragrance as a rule, but it was an immediate wash-off. However, I am a new convert to the Klaire's sunscreen. Top tier. Also fantastic are the SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica and iunik Soothing Centella Sun Cream. I've tried a bunch of Asian sunscreens and those three top my list.
Yes, and here in the USA, Missha BB creams are popular bc they're more like makeup but contain some SPF, which many people think is enough for good coverage. These BB creams also have very strong fragrance, like medicinal cure-alls. Absolute hell for someone with rosacea like mine!
@@MyCleverHandlehi i too have rosacea can you tell me what sunscreen suited your skin and ones which didnt..aslo what type of rosacea you have?? I HAVE type 2 and live in a v hot and humid climate .
I would love a part 2! This video is so helpful, but there are still so many Asian brands out there . Some brand recommendations: Anessa, Dr.May, Curel, Allie, Cellina,Sekkisei
For Acne prone or oily combination skin, I highly recommend The Biore' UV Aqua Rich Essence (the other Biore' watery gel is a slightly different formulation- sometimes can have a subtle cast for medium/olive and deeper tones). Ive had the best response so far as its like a drink for combination oily/acne prone skin and dries down matt and leaves it super soft to the touch. The Tocobo Watery sun gel is also a pleasure & pleasant to wear as it dries down instantly - feeling weightless and leaves the skin matt and that sense of hydration but Im loving the Biore' after 8 hours of wear/.Comparing the Biore' and The Tocobo I tend to be less oily using the Biore' after a full day, and reapplying the Tocobo sun stick (The sunstick is a standout). While The Isntree Watery sun gel is also weightless, leaving the skin feeling fresh, breathable and matt. I would say its comparable to the Tocobo - both as enjoyable and pleasant to wear all day. Beauty of Joseon is slightly more emollient, and leaves my skintype a hint more dewy. even tho it does dries down. I find the glowy radiance to my skin is more obvious compared with the previous three brands. I enjoy this product too and find wearing it when the temperature drops and Im needing something more dewy this product excels. The matching sunstick is also another standout but this sunstick helps to matify the skin so in combination could do the trick. Im a fan of all four that Ive tried and have been using them on rotation for several months. Bravo for the Video Dr Idriss and thankyou for sharing the technical side of facts for these K-Beauty and Japanese sunscreens.
Like the Purito daily sunscreen spf 50 a lot. Feels a bit greasy going on but is absorbed quickly. It doesn't sting my eyes which is amazing for me. You don't need a moisturizer underneath unless your skin is super dry. I'm a senior and my skin is semi-dry and it's enough.
I would love to hear your take on the new l'oreal filter that is included in the Uvmune 400 line compared to the new Avene filter (Triasorb). They claim to protect against extra long UV rays that other filters can't cover.
Other Asian brands also have a lot of fantastic SPF (Biore is actually a Japanese brand for example) pls do a ep2 for this series! I personally get my Asian SPF from Yamibuy I initially just use them for Asian snack but end up also getting Asian SPF from them lol but pls remember to filter for fulfilled by yami only. A few that I would recommend trying are: Elixir advanced day care from shiseido, decorté multifunction sunscreen, mistine aqua base ultra protection. So many L’Oréal brands like kiehls and lancome formulated the “same” sunscreen completely different and the Asian version is always so much better 😂
thank you very much for this video. I was hesitant to buy asian brands because I didn't know about ingredients and was worried about why/if they are safe under European regulation, but with this feedback you gave me confidence to go ahead and try them know :)
I have been using Canmake mineral sunscreen, mostly I’m indoor but one day I went out in sun without hat for 2-4 minutes and I got another spot of melasma, so based on this, I think only Australian sunscreen can protect from Australian strong sun! Now I switched to Naked Sunday Mineral even thought it leaves slightly white cast and gives me shiny look, but I can’t take risk! Hope this helps other people too
Agreed. I've used several Korean and Japanese sunscreens and burned, even with minimal sun exposure. I'm very dubious about their testing and rating system, especially after the Purito scandal. I'm sticking with LaRoche Posay. It's more expensive but I know it works.
The Tocobo sunscreen stick is a great reapplication sunscreen. It’s soft and silky, you don’t need to touch it after applying it and it’s very light. It gives you just a little bit of glow without making u look or feel greasy. Definitely recommend for oily or normal skin types. 👍
That was very informative thank you ❤ Id love to see a similar video on french sunscreens since they are only ones available in my country ( avene ..bioderma.. uriage ..vichy.. laroche posay) each brand have alot of sunscreens somtimes its confusing to choose the best
Nobody talks about the Round Lab birch juice one anymore 😥 James Welsh and Cassandra Bankson did once or twice about a year ago (which is why I tried it, ofc) but that's it... guys don't sleep on it it's the best! My normal skin needs a little extra hydration/moisture underneath in the winter, but it's just moisturizing enough in the summer, and leaves a very natural finish!
I believe that labmuffin said that Round Lab and Beauty of Joseon were bade by the same company. Different formulations but all around a basic core of ingredients with niacinamide.
Danish 37-year old here: you're knowledge and the way you share your thoughts is very helpful! Thank you! I've watch so many of your videos in trying to make my first skin care routine. You are gold. Question: do you know anything about how to manage skin tags and when they appear on the face?
@@ccap3211 Thanks again. I think you’re right. I tried a homeopathic ‘skin tag removal’ oil from the drugstore which reeked of tea tree oil and it did nothing. And I pushed through the unpleasant smell and used it for quite a while, nightly. I’ll see my dermatologist.😊
Love your videos. I was waiting for the mineral sunscreens. I'm allergic to chemical filters and I can't use any of these amazing sunscreens 😭plus my skin is dry af and all of the mineral ones just make me even drier lol
East Asian skin is suppose to have a tendency towards melasma and hyperpigmentation. Before the days of laser, sunscreen is the only defense against the sun, short of brollies and hats. So, a lot of work went into sunscreens since white, unblemish skin has been held as beauty ideal for thousands of years. As for Australia, skin cancer capital of the world. Nuff said.
I love BOJ as I have oily skin, very impressed. Now that I am using retinol I find that I need a little something and tried Centella Madagascar from Skin1004 and I love it also. Watery and appeared more greasy bec it fixed the minor flaking of my skin from retinol, BUT after about 10 mins, it was totally absorbed. I love it just as much. I stopped buying from Amazon and buy from Stylevana, much cheaper bec they are in HK and shipping took almost a month to the US but so worth it. All their products have manufacturing date as well as expiration date, which I appreciate. Waaaay better deal than AMZ just need to be patient. Shipping is free over $49. I am stocking up on spf moisturizers and stick for myself and my kids. Most of their brands are Korean, few Japanese.
Goodness, i depend on your expertise on a daily basis while trying to deal with my dry, acne prone, sensitive skin with melasma under control. I'm 45 and the aging process is a trip. The changes in my skin ...oh god
Thank you for covering Korean sunscreen. For me as an avid J-beauty and K-beauty sunscreen, I see the main issue of them is that they have good coverage in the UVB spectrum, they are often doing just enough (PA four pluses = PPD 16), I rarely see any East Asian sunscreen with PPD higher than 20.
I love Korean sunscreens. Since I work outside and have red hair i basically bathe in it. I really wish the us would adopt sone of these newer filters!!
I would order far enough in advance of running out of a product I've come to rely on for daily use. The problem is, from my POV, is that you don't know how long skincare items have been sitting in a possibly unheated or non-air conditioned warehouse waiting to be shipped. This questionable storage time can adversely affect the active ingredients, and the formulas can separate in their containers. So it's not just a question of inconvenience, but of efficacy.
I love how you focused on PA++++ and when it comes to PA+++ you clearly mentioned that it has three pluses, not four pluses. Thank you for that. Also I always look for these filters in my sunscreen: Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M (though excess of this may cause white cast), Uvinol A Plus, Uvinol T 150. Thank you Doctor
@@bluesash10 below are the reasons: 1. *The most important reason is* these are new age chemical filters and most importantly these are photostable. These filters don't degrade under sun easily unlike other chemical filters or even zinc oxide which also starts to lose effectiveness after 2-3 hours and which is the reason we should apply sunscreen after every 2-3 hours. Though I guess we should reapply no matter what filter is there as sweat, oil etc changes the structure and may create some hollow place where sun rays may touch. 2. Along with UVB, these are extremely good for UVA protection and UVA causes aging. 3. They don't irritate eyes. 4. Obviously environment friendly and doesn't harm coral reefs. And yeah, just broad spectrum doesn't cover how much UVA protection I'm getting. So it's always best to go for PA rating. And when it comes to PA rating you should go for highest i.e. PA++++ There are many Sunscreens with SPF 50 and PA three pluses but unless and until four pluses are there, those companies won't get my money. Just for example (may sound stupid though) PA with two or three pluses are like spf 25 or 30. I know how much we tend towards SPF 50 or above if we are under the sun for maximum UVB protection. So why not go for maximum UVA protection when you are under the sun too and PA four pluses are best for that. Sorry as I wrote too many lines but hope you find this helpful. Thanks!
@@knowledgehunter_ Wow! Thank you SO much for the detailed information. I really appreciate it! It's been so difficult for me to find the right sunscreen. I have tan skin, and they either leave a white cast or sting my eyes. I want to make sure its also protect me from blue light (which I think that's what the PA+ is for, right?). I don't like the tinted ones because the color not the right... I guess I have lots of homework now 😵💫. Thank you for help!
@@dmvfosterkittens It most likely has to do with the climate of each country. Japan is very humid so their skincare is more light-weight, while Korea is more dry so their skincare tends to be more moisturizing, which can be heavy on oilier skin.
Unfortunately this Skin Aqua one contains octinoxate as their first listed filter. An old style chemical filter which is readily absorbed by the body and has estrogenic effect. This filter also generates free radicals upon UV exposure, breaks down under the influence of light and is harmful to the environment. The BoJ sunscreen only has new and superior filters.
I didn’t know that about hyaluronic acid! It makes sense on why Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost water gel version makes my skin burn a little when first applying it, I thought it was from the alcohol? I don’t even have sensitive skin so I did find it weird 😲 I have been using it for a while now because I love the lightweight formula
I’m skeptical sun sticks are “bad to rely on but okay for reapplication”. Based on my experience, they’re both bad to rely on AND bad for reapplication. If you have a base layer of cream spf and go over it with a stick, you are displacing that first layer while not really applying much additional spf. I’ve tried swiping like crazy with a stick, and you just straight up don’t see much product leaving the stick and staying on your face. In my experience, the very very best application of a stick is a first one on dry skin, because the texture of the skin provides the friction to get product off your stick, and even that one isn’t good. But a sun stick on already moist skin from a first cream spf layer mostly seems to collect the cream and makes your protection thinner. If you can’t tell, I super distrust sun sticks. I’ve been side-eyeing the “use it for reapplication” advice coming from dermatology RUclips for a time now. You don’t have to be a doctor to notice the product isn’t getting on your face in a large enough amount to be effective - you just need eyes and a mirror. (And maybe a food scale.) At this point I use sticks only on my hands because something is better than nothing and I wash them 20 times a day, but I avoid them anywhere else.
Here’s the issue with your analysis: chemical sunscreens don’t sit on top of the skin. They are absorbed. Only physical ones sit on the skin. Therefore, when you do a reapplication with a sunstick two hours later, you are not displacing the first layer of lotions. Second, do you really think Japanese and Korean sunscreen makers would make a product like that? They are sunscreen leaders, and East Asians are prone to hyperpigmentation and melasma. The dermatologists are right here. Third, when you swipe to put on deodorant, do you see a lot of product? No. Do you still sweat? No. It’s true you need to apply liberally, but the 2 hour reapplication rule is an old US study based on sunscreens more than the last filter approval of 25 years ago. It doesn’t apply to Asian sunscreen formulations. I use a Japanese lotion as a base application and reapply with the sunstick. Do whatever you feel comfortable with, but the derms are right here.
@@moniquemichelle7295 Chemical sunscreens largely stay on the surface of your skin. That’s how they are able to rub off (as we’re warned about constantly), pill off, and why you can easily get a fingerful of sunscreen lotion off your face if you lightly rub a nail across your skin at the end of the day. That surface film gets rubbed off on many sun sticks, which usually do not have enough friction when applied to a moisturized surface to easily deposit their spf without getting to skin. At least, the couple of sun sticks I used (SKIN1004, Isntree), which were fairly stiff. I don’t know if it’s different for softer, wetter, sun sticks. Regardless, I do not intend to experiment further seeing as sunscreen formulations are finicky and another issue is that blending formulations may have unpredictable results, and that’s pretty much what’s happening when you stick over a lotion layer. You displace and move around the underlayer and merge everything together, which is not the set of conditions at which SPFs are tested. That is not the recipe for a uniform layer. Sun sticks are certainly better than nothing, but they’re basically bad products.
Thank you for the video doc. Can you please do some more deep dive in some of Korean Skincare? Because in my country K-Skincare product are more affordable than others.
I was eager to jump on the bandwagon after hearing great things about Beauty of Joseon, but I've read terrible reviews by people who struggle with pigmentation. Since it doesn’t block visible light, many users reported worsening pigmentation and melasma. Because of that, I’m steering clear!
Appreciate the info and your time. I have used beauty of joseon on the daily for about one year. Dry, sensitive, rosacea, mature skin. What I'd really like to find is a sweat/water resistant sunscreen for my face for daily outdoor exercise, gardening, mowing the lawn, scuba diving, swimming, etc. Not a fan of zinc. Peace.
Try the Japanese sunscreens! Some are VERY water resistant, like Shiseido - Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk N SPF50+ PA++++ - 2022 Version - 90ml, and the Biore mentioned here is also water-resistant. My favorite for lap swimming, though is EVY, a Swedish brand that is a foam. It is long lasting and very water resistant. I also have dry, very mature, sensitive skin. Happy hunting.
I think I'm the only one who is sensitive to BOJ sunscreen 😕... It caused irritation, burning & acne breakouts after using it and I'm still trying to repair my skin barrier until now
Boj didnt suit me either... It stung and caused breakouts ( i was using a sample) ... So i tried Isntree watery sun gel instead and it suits me soo well ❤...never stung , didnt irritate my eyes ... However i have read some ppl have exact opposite reactions when it comes to boj vs isntree Best if you can get a sample to test out coz skincare is so subjective 🥲
Thank you for the wonderful insight Doc! I didn't know anything about the filters and different formulations, I would only look at the spf. This will help me make a better decision on my next purchase.
I would like to see sunscreens tested with the little sunscreen test stickers. I just don’t trust any sunscreen really🤷♀️I feel like the sun is just too powerful😂
I love your pillow talk products! Flash mask is the best 💜 I have to say that I think the Inistree watery Sun gel does have a scent, that classic sunscreen scent that smells just slightly beachy. If you don’t like that smell, fyi
Oh my God! That’s awesome! Yes true true true!! I am using 5 different kinds of korean sunscreens. Love you doc! You are my hero!! 👍🇨🇦🇵🇭 thank you for all your amazing videos. It helps me a lot!
Shereene, Please please PLEASEEE a video on proper waxing procedure such as skin prep, and skincare after to avoid irritation, ingrown hair, and bumps? Especially on face and bikini area! Would loveee that. Love you!! Thank you!
I am SO happy you have a review on these! I’ve been using a few of these for a year now and I love the way they feel but felt a little worried about their efficacy. (And I also bought from Amazon! 😮 I will stop!!)
Hi! Can you do a video on at home dermaplaning? Who shouldn’t do? How to do properly? And how about that cleanser pH video! Goalstogetglowing has a ton of cleansers on there but I’m curious about the Aveeno and the Vanicream. Thank you! Looooooooove all of your content and your delivery style ❤
I thought I was gonna adore that Issintree one after getting a great deal on 2 of them on stylevanna. My skin has actually been breaking out and looking splotchy with redness since I’ve been using it over the past couple of weeks. I regret buying them, but think they’re formula is lovely and for someone who can tolerate them, they’d be excellent. I am adoring the one that comes in a blue jar by Hadalabo- just wish it came in a bigger size and in a tube.
hi dr shereene, thank for giving detailed awareness about sunscreens. i have seen spay or mist like sunscreens available in market. are they effective? what is your view?
What an amazing video!! Thank you for your time and investment! A small question - I am afraid to order sunscreens online because the shipping conditions are not ideal and the creams may be damaged. Do you think it is safe to order online? I would love to hear an expert's opinion
My absolute ride-or-die is Missha soft finish sun milk, because I just LOVE how it feels, I get excited about sun screen and look forward to wearing it… so I thought why mess with a good thing… but now I am interested in your thoughts on it compared to the other Missha sunscreens, and should I switch Beauty of Joseon or the Purrito…
I looooove the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen! It's my favorite. However, I'm 14 weeks pregnant and I've been really uncertain about using it. I've seen different messages about mineral vs chemical sunscreens in pregnancy and I'm not sure whether to keep using my fav or buy a mineral sunscreen. Do you know if there's any risk?
The orange and blue “European” brand that the Scinic Sun stick looks similar to is actually the Shiseido clear sunscreen stick, which is another Japanese brand like Biore! Thanks again, Dr. Idriss, for shedding light on Asian sunscreens. Would love to explore other Asian brands since the Asian skincare game is so strong and reasonably priced.
beauty of joseon is the best sunscreen i’ve ever tried, i can’t stand the greasy/oily feeling of most sunscreens i’ve tried and the beauty of joseon one actually makes me excited to wear sunscreen!!
I am so ready for some spring and summer weather with beauty of joseon sunscreen and my new sun hat lol. I also like to use it on my hands when driving since it doesn't make everything I touch after applying white and greasy!
I bought it a few months ago not really expecting much, and I love. It’s now my favorite sunscreen
unfortunately it gives me a bit of white cast :l
Yes I look forward for it too because I can’t stand greasy sunscreens. But it’s not for those strong sunny days, try out the EVY Foam one in the brown can if you want something not too heavy but super heavy duty sunscreen for those extremely sunny days
Thank you for explaining the PA system! I always struggled understanding the rating system, and your explanation was so concise and clarifying! 🙏❤️
🙌❤️
Same i was actually searching for sunscreens in my country and didnt understood the pa nor did i searched what it meant and now i know and very satisfied so i could be more aware on what im getting into😊
I would LOVE to see a part 2 of this. I absolutely adore korean spfs, and theres SO many amazing ones out there
part two would be wonderful
Biore is actually a Japanese brand. As for the blue dye in sunscreen. Some Asian sunscreen has it for color correcting or 'brightening' features (usually in Asia that means making you look fairer). In fact Biore UV has one specifically with that. Tried that, nice texture and all but the brightening part is not my jam.
I have the Biore UV Watery essence literally the best sunscreen I’ve added to my routine
I really like this one
@@jakecorshia I love that one too
She knows, she mentioned that in the description box 😊
Almost 25 years since the last UV filter approval..? That's absurd! I'm so glad to see derms like you and dr Dray are trying to make a difference!
I'm a sunscreen nerd, and I love the visual with the different active ingredients; trying to explain this to others is so hard, but that makes it so easy!
Korean sunscreen is where it is at! They have really done sunscreen proud!!
I have rosacea and it actually calms down my rosacea! It also seems to prevent me from breaking out.
Yes!!!!! This!!!!
Good luck!
I assume you’re already using tretinoin as it’s the gold standard in anti aging ingredients. If not I would definitely start there. And sunscreen.
Recently started using Beauty of Joseon and I love it ❤. I have super oily skin and was using SuperGoop (avoiding white cast, I have dark skin). Joseon keeps my oiliness at a minimum with NO white cast . Now, I use my Supergoop as a highlighter on high points of my face.
using spf as highlighter? how does that work
Biore is J-Beauty btw and they make a lot of great skincare products including sunscreen. I've tried this one before and it has a nice gel cream texture that absorbs quickly, so ideal for those with oily skin. But I believe it has fragrance and a bunch of citrus extracts that could be irritating though, so sensitive skin proceed with caution. Hope this helps 😊
It is waterresitant too!
I love it too.
Love the super detailed explanations - thank you!
Purito and many other brands have official amazon storefronts. There’s nothing wrong with buying from those.
Hi do you know how to tell which Korean sunscreens are legit on Amazon or how to tell?
She is so smart explaining all these! Thats why she my most fave derm.❤❤❤
Huge reason why I switched to Korean is none of them burn my eyes. Among other reasons too. Superior sunscreens
Actually, European sunscreens have far higher PPD protection. PA++++ is only at PPD 16. La Roche Posay’s UVMune400 is at PPD 46, Altruist PPD 54 and Isdin Eryfotona PPD 61.
@@PassionPno
Those sunscreens you just listed are the exception and shouldn't be used to represent European sunscreens as a whole.
@@crystalclear7512 You can just message the brand and they’ll tell you the PPD rating.
@@PassionPno
Nope, most of them won't. They'll just tell you the standard "it's at least 1/3 of the UVB."
I use the CosRX one. Thank u for explaining the PA+++ system!
Which one do you use?
@@crystalclear7512 thank you, that makes more sense
@@raha5527
Yes, Dr. Dray talked about that. Also, Kelly Driscoll said that 🇪🇺 European sunscreens do better in summer heat.
@@crystalclear7512
You reminded me I want to get this. However, being fair but still tanning even though reapply & getting melanoma (both sun damage!)
First of all: I really like your videos! Thank you for educating us ☺️
I'm from Germany and here in Europe the UV filters "benzophenone" are forbidden cause they are carcinogenic.
The thing is: We also don't use "octocrylene" because they decompose into benzophenone.
So I would not recommend buying SPFs that contain these filters 🙏🏻
Which sunscreens, if any, did she recommend that contain benzophenone (which apparently also goes by diphenylmethanone or
Diphenyl keton?) it would save me some research as I’m now looking up the ingredients for everything recommended here to make sure that none contain this ingredient!😮 thanks for the heads up.
@@ScoobyDoosMomhere the ones from missha and scinic :) it's relatively easy to check cause octocrylene (as in these cases) are uv filters so it's one of the first ingredients if you google a product :)
Of course Dr. Idriss is a medical professional and I am not! It's just what those experts in my country/ EU told us 🤷🏻♀️
I don't think it's worse to use these sunscreens instead of no sunscreen :) On the other hand it's just easy to buy one without these ingredients I think :)
Best video of 2023! I really appreciate that you showed the uva & uvb range of protection. I found some new sunscreens that I want to try. Thanks
Now I would love to see similar video but about European sunscreens! 😊
Yes!
Yeeeeesssss

Biore is a Japanese sunscreen, not Korean. It is a holy grail for a lot of people. I have gotten Japanese sunscreens from Amazon with no issues.

I ordered it from Stylevana as well 5 days ago and didn’t received any shipping confirmation emails.
Did you get yours? And how long did it took to arrive?
I've read terrible reviews by people who struggles with pigmentation. It doesn't block visible light so people end up struggling with worsening of pigmentation and melasma.
Great info! I recently tried the beauty of joseon on my very sensitive skin and it's amazing!!! I would love to see a video from you on how to address pore congestion. Thank you for all of your videos!
I placed an order for 2 of the sunscreens mentioned from Stylevana on January 31st, and just received a shipment notification today. Be prepared to wait!
I placed an order last Sunday from Stylevana and it shipped on Tuesday. I don’t usually have to wait too long.
If they items are in stock (it shows it on the product page), then it shouldn’t take that long. “Shouldn’t” being the key word. 😬😂
I placed an order at YesStyle for the double pack of BoJ (among other things) on Wednesday 3/15 and received an email that they are shipping 3/18 (today).
Actually, Biore is from Japan, not Korea :)
She did mention that on the description.

Hey! Which sunscreen do you find best for Rosacea?❤
CanMake Mermaid sunscreen is amazing too. Very light and sheer with awesome filters and doesn't irritate eyes :))
Right. And ordering off Amazon from Japanese and Korean cosmetics suppliers is fine.
White cast???
@@rafinha7081 none. I highly recommend. I just commented on another comment up here. I love BOJ just as much but Skin1004 is just as amazing.
Totally agree. I use both BOJ and Skin1004. Love both.

Anessa, Dr.May, Curel, Allie, Cellina,Sekkisei
Thanks! The linked website had a huge sale and I was able to get 3 of the recommended products! Thank you! I’m excited 🥳
Please cover in the next one the topic sunscreen and Vit D, how to combine these two topics. Thanks for everything you do! Love
My favorite fabulous sunscreen, like it even better than Josen
I really like the DewGlow sunscreen from Naturium. It is PA++++. It feels so nice on and actually makes me want to wear sunscreen.
Darn! I just placed an order for their retinal last night! Should have added the sunscreen!
Buying from amazon is ok.. as long as you make sure its from their own store
Danish 37-year old here: you're knowledge and the way you share your thoughts is very helpful! Thank you! I've watch so many of your videos in trying to make my first skin care routine. You are gold.
Question: do you know anything about how to manage skin tags and when they appear on the face?
Great question and thank you. I hope she responds. I recently got one on my face and I’m annoyed by it!
I don’t think there’s much to do except to get them removed. They’ll either freeze it off with liquid nitrogen or burn them off (electrocautery).
*THANK you so much* for this.
I know I left lots of passionate comments (I've had skin CAncer twice and have been using sunscreens regularly. )
Love your videos. I was waiting for the mineral sunscreens. I'm allergic to chemical filters and I can't use any of these amazing sunscreens 😭plus my skin is dry af and all of the mineral ones just make me even drier lol
This is the sunscreen bible! Loved it❤
Thank you!
The tinted Rovectin spf is amazing, it's pretty underrated but it's so good.
I just starting using tinted ISDIN sunscreen and so far the best for combo skin plays well with major fade and makeup. Will try Beauty of Joseon next🤩
I love how you focused on PA++++ and when it comes to PA+++ you clearly mentioned that it has three pluses, not four pluses. Thank you for that.
Also I always look for these filters in my sunscreen:
Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M (though excess of this may cause white cast), Uvinol A Plus, Uvinol T 150.
Thank you Doctor
Why do you look for those ingredients specifically? I'm trying to find a better sunscreen. Thank you!
@@bluesash10 below are the reasons:
PA++++
There are many Sunscreens with SPF 50 and PA three pluses but unless and until four pluses are there, those companies won't get my money.
Not Korean, but I really enjoy Skin Aqua UV Gel (Gold). I actually prefer it over the Beauty of Joseon, and comes in a bigger tube. 😊
I'm excited to try it, hope it works for me too.
Agree. J- beauty sunscreens tend to be better for oily skin snd are a better value.
it's my everyday sunscreen too. i'm oily so skin aqua is perfect for me. though it has alcohol, it is not drying.
K-Beauty but i saw biore which is a Japanese sunscreen and a holy grail for a lot of people.
You must be a bot
@@franekkkkk lmao what?!
Thank you Dr. Shireen! Could you also round up some of your favourite Australian sunscreens next? ❤️
The best sunscreen I have ever tried are the ones from la roche posay!
Tis is probably by far the best sunscreen video i hav ever seen!!! Thank you for tis informative video 🤗
Great video ! Beauty if Joseon is my current favourite !
🙌❤️
Im a simple skincare nerd, shereene recommends, i buy
@@kmjdebay Thank you for the suggestions! Peace.
Beauty of Joseon is truly my ride or die.
However i have read some ppl have exact opposite reactions when it comes to boj vs isntree
Best if you can get a sample to test out coz skincare is so subjective 🥲
It could be due to the fermented ingredients in addition to the niacinamide. Try the Purito Daily Soft Touch Sunscreen
Thank you for the wonderful insight Doc! I didn't know anything about the filters and different formulations, I would only look at the spf. This will help me make a better decision on my next purchase.
I like Innisfree Daily UV Defense from Korea. It leaves no cast and works well under makeup. I do wish it was SPF 50 instead of 36.
I would like to see sunscreens tested with the little sunscreen test stickers. I just don’t trust any sunscreen really🤷♀️I feel like the sun is just too powerful😂
I love your pillow talk
products! Flash mask is the best 💜
I have to say that I think the Inistree watery Sun gel does have a scent, that classic sunscreen scent that smells just slightly beachy. If you don’t like that smell, fyi
Thank you! I was curious about the Pillowtalk products. 😊
Thank you for reviewing all these sunscreens!! Also your necklace in the video makes me think you're the Thanos of all sunscreens now
Thank you for the giving us a visual of the filters and which uva/uvb rays they protect against.
Discovered Beauty if Joseon SPF from you and loveeeeee it!
What an amazing video!! Thank you for your time and investment!
A small question - I am afraid to order sunscreens online because the shipping conditions are not ideal and the creams may be damaged. Do you think it is safe to order online? I would love to hear an expert's opinion
She ordered every single one of these online so I’d say yeah, she thinks it’s fine. I’ve ordered a ton and never had any issues.
I love beauty of joseon ! Thank you so much for this video it helped a lot 🙂
And btw you have such a wonderful way of saying everything. Unique ! ❤
Love the graph and color coding!
I appreciate this because I will be going through Korea on Friday/Saturday, on my way to Singapore ! Thanks for all the info!!
