The Remarkable Story of the First Female US Presidential Candidate

- A woman who led one of the most remarkable lives of anyone of her era despite being largely forgotten by history thanks in part to the fact that she was too extreme for even the women's rights and suffragists movements, who conveniently very intentionally wrote her out of their history despite her massive contributions to the cause. This is the story of Victoria "Badass" Claflin Woodhull and her vie for the office of President of the United States.
Good show Simon. This is an important story to preserve, and her memory deserves to be remembered. Well done man! Well done.

Colonel James Blood, sounds like an awesome husband, plus that name and title combo is just 👌
AND he is from MY home state of Missouri (a.k.a. Misery)! Why have I NEVER heard any of this before in 43 years?
Col. Blood was was not an "awesome husband." He was a hardcore alcoholic and that led to their divorce in 1876. Woodhull's free love ideas made her popular with some of the nation's wealthiest men, particularly Cornelius Vanderbilit. That connection made her rich. Woodhull did feel sorry for Blood and gave him financial support after their divorce.

You've every right to be proud. We sent in our ballots soon after receiving them.
And you can bet my daughter will be learning about this woman, as well. I remember in school wondering why so few women made an impact in history. It's not women, it's the writers of the curriculum who decide even incredible women like this aren't worth mentioning.
@@sandybarnes887 thank you Sandy
This was a nice surprise.
I find that a 20ish minute video is the perfect length for my attention span. I feel that the shorter videos seem to end just as I'm getting into them.
Great stuff with this one!
I love this woman! She was ahead of her time. I wonder: would she be proud of the rights modern women have or would she think the fight for equality is not nearly over? Such an impressive woman!
I feel that she would be glad at the progress we have made(perhaps not the speed of it), while still feeling that there is work to be done.
She was a eugenicist

Agree.. She sounds compelling (though how much of that is simon :D)
@@HighlightHistory 🤨 Ooooh, I want to see this. Just going to grab some popcorn and a chair.
@@ktaragorn seriously?! In one sentence u downgraded everything she accomplished, her amazing writing and speaking by giving the credit to a man. No offense to Simon, but the credit goes to her, and that way of thinking, "that its just him that makes it sound good" taking credit from women's accomplishments is all u have left, the woman's movement will never stop until everyone has equal rights, and its thanks to women like Woodhull that made it possible for a woman like me to tell you a man how it is.
Why not? She's still voting in Detroit.
Did a project on her back in college! So glad to see you talking about her. She is definitely overshadowed with later suffragettes due to her “radical” ideas which, let’s face it, would cause pearl clutching even now.
I do appreciate that she was an advocate to that women do not have to be sexual slaves to their husbands though. Back in this time there was no concept of marital rape and if a woman wasn't in the mood she wouldn't be able to report it or complain if her husband raped her. Even the concept of being married without sex at all is a pretty relevant idea and relevant for people like asexual individuals or other. I grew up in the Christian belt of the South myself, currently work under the social work and mental health Spectrum and you would be surprised how many women in my hometown that are married think they are not allowed to say they are not in the mood to their husbands, seriously! I used to be friends with a woman who blamed herself when her husband sexually assaulted her and claimed "It was my own fault, I shouldn't have said no. I'm his wife."
@@gracehaven5459 that this mindset exists at all, and that it's advocated by the adventists (and probably others I'm not aware of) in this day and age, blows my mind. What is wrong with people?

Really loving the content on this channel. Thanks to Simon and the rest of the team, keep them coming!
Good episode Simon, her story is inspiring enough to be preserved and she deserved to be remembered by the American people 🇺🇲. Even in North Korea, a female President will be appointed after my death.
I thought you were already dead and replaced by a body double.

And yet there are still endless countries, where women go from daughterhood to wifehood to motherhood to be freed by death. It's still a topic, sadly.
Most women do not have a problem having a family. Mostly sexist feminist. A man(most) works his but off in back breaking labor work only to be freed by death as well. We keep the world going when we work together. There are certain things men do better just like there are things women do better. One thing most women do better is Nurturing children. Would love if you would do a biographics or a highlight history about Shirley Chisolm, the first black woman to run for President and the first black congresswoman ever. Her ties to the LGBTQ community are also groundbreaking, a very interesting person and story indeed.
Thanks for this! I am descended from her sister.
In your "how democracy dies" video, you made a few mentions of how media influences voters. i would tend to say that by and large media is what has been a driving force in the change we are seeing now, from brexit to the divisiveness in the us. i enjoyed the video and was glad to learn a bit more about our history and am disappointed that some of this was not more clearly taught in our history classes. Even the susan b anthony story was VERY glossed over and what little you shared eclipsed it.
Though I find this show so captivating, being an old goat, haha, I must rewind to hear and take it all in! (You speak so quickly!) keep up the good work though!
Just a quick FYI, you can slow the audio to 3/4 speed in the settings (3 dots in the right of the screen or a little cog). That might make it easier for you

What a brilliantly amazing lady
She really was ahead of her time, maybe TOO ahead, perhaps that's one of the biggest reasons why she ultimately failed. If a person in the 10th-century claimed that they have figured out how to get people to the moon, regardless of whether their idea was scientifically sound they would be seen as a lunatic. People, and especially society, resist change, and to expect a society to accept such drastic changes as her ideals would require either a miracle or some sort of utter disaster that reshuffled the human species at the time.
Catherine Beecher's schools were famous at the time as well (the third sibling)

What a completely stupid and ignorant comment.
I'd love to know about more obscure candidates for the U.S.
21:00 That's insane.
Here in PR a candidate is pretty much like her with the exception that she is also an Atheist. I was going to vote for her, I was ALL in, until she said in one of the debates that she is all for a red light district in Puerto Rico. 😤
I'm sorry, but no.
That is literally the only reason I'm not voting for her. Like, an island that has a epidemic of divorces, STIs, AIDS, violence against woman, violence against LGBTQ+, and violence against children needs to be more amoral.
A red light district isn't going to solve those issues, it will only compound them.

Victoria Woodhull also pioneered eugenics, doing so before Francis Galton coined the term. Just before she died she praised *Buck v. Bell* (1927) in the *New York Times* for making forced sterilization constitutional. You can find her pioneering writings on that in *Lady Eugenist* And Woodhull was much like Margaret Sanger, founder of today's Planned Parenthood, whose early board included Lothrop Stoddard, author of *The Rising Tide of Color against White World Supremacy* - and yes it is about just what its title says it is about. Woodhull is "badass" only if that term includes using almost any means to keep down the birthrates of those regarded as "unfit." She was a very evil woman.
Nobody is going to be perfect, I think it's important to acknowledge both her contributions to equal rights and celebrate that, and her more harmful views. She created significant positive change, which is important to celebrate, while also acknowledging her negative impacts.

Marriages that force a woman to have relations whenever her husband wants are barbaric. I just realized that people thought that way.
Just as an aside, per Jewish law, heck, per the Bible, it's the other way. It's the man who has the responsibility to ensure his wife is satisfied! I'm not sure where that bit of misogyny comes from.

Do what my fiancé did: move to the living room and sleep on the floor if necessary. We've since move elsewhere and the kids' bedroom is at the end of the hallway.
I can't believe I've never heard of her before. Honestly, the second I stopped trying to force myself to be monogamous my relationships fucking blossomed. It's so mindblowing how loving and open you can be when you're not constantly paranoid that someone might 'steal your man' because like...go for it we can negotiate boundaries and all be happy anyway.
