John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892, in South Africa. His family returned to their native England when he was a small child. Tolkien’s parents had died by the time he was 12, so he and his younger brother Hilary were raised by their family’s priest, Father Francis Morgen. Ronald, as he was called, remained a devout Catholic his entire life.

In the spring of 1973 I finished The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I was so moved that I sent a letter to JRR Tolkien. I had no address for him, so I just sent it to his US publisher. MUCH to my surprise, in August I received a letter from Britain. Yes, it was a typed and signed letter from the man himself. He typed and signed a three paragraph letter and sent it to a boy in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This was no form letter. It was a heartfelt thank you from my favorite author of all time. Little did I know, he would be dead within a couple of weeks after sending it. It was a cherished treasure of mine until it was lost in a flood at my family home while I was away in the army. But I still have it in my mind's eye. RIP, sir. A true gentle man and a true gentleman.

I found the Lord of the Rings in my high school library during the 80's. It made a significant contribution to my character and has been passed down to my children. I admire the connection that you have. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us.

I've loved JRRTolkien my whole life, I'm only 35 but good Lord I love him, his works, his children's works, etc,
Tolkien's father did not return to England. He died in S. Africa. His mother converted to Catholicism and the extended family rejected them as a result. His mother died of diabetes and that is when the priest took guardianship of Tolkien and his younger brother.
Viggo also broke some teeth too. He had them glue them in to finish the scenes and went to a dentist later. He went through a lot for these movies. I love them all. ❤️
He almost got a knife thrown at his face and somehow managed to deflect it with his sword too.
@@resileaf9501 And the horses he rode in both Lord of the rings and Hidalgo he adopted and owns. The horse he rides through much of The Two Towers and Return of the King- Brego (real name Uraeus) had been a Highly Trained Dressage horse before filming and in the extras on the DVD, the scene where Uraeus lays down by the river for him to ride was practiced 2 weeks before the scene was shot with a dummy. Each time, he ended up on the dummy. so when Viggo was laid down to shoot the scene, Uraeus miraculously didn't crush him and went onto the mark.
Also, the rear after Aragorn (Elessar then) did his speech at the Black Gate was totally Unscripted. Viggo didn't urge Uraeus to rear and there wasn't a trainer to Que him to do so.
No other work of fiction affected my life as much as The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings. I have read the books and watched the movies many times.
I prefer the Rankin-Bass Hobbit over most of Jackson's version. Particularly EVERYTHING after they get to Erebor.

I know how Tolkien felt. After several years I still miss my wife of 33 years. She's not dead, thankfully, and I wish her well but I do miss her, greatly. That sadness has been killing me but I don't regret that love.
I'm so happy Cage turned down LOTR and Matrix, both movies became so much better thanks to those decisions.

@@xfilesfoxisdead7979 I'm not sure Ghost Rider could have been turned into a good movie at that time by anyone, starring anyone. Studios and audiences had different expectations, and the FX technology was not where it is now. I like the way the story was portrayed in Agents of Shield.

Blimey! Nicolas Cage was offered the part and turned it down! That was a narrow escape.! He's only got two expressions and one of those is blank. Viggo is superbly cast.
Say what you like about Nicholas Cage now, but I thought he was great in Moonstruck and Raising Arizona. Later, not so much.

Viggo Mortensen brought a sense of Grace and believability to the roll. That being said, Nick Cage and Ron Perlman were pretty good in that Witch movie :D
@ Dan, you're absolutely right. That bawling baby man would have sucked as he does in most of the movies he's been in with Kickass being a very notable exception. Cage would be better off doing serious bad guy roles. And for fuck's sake, I wish he would stop crying!

Three hours after watching this video I awoke with a start. Rubbing my eyes I could barely make out Simon at the foot of my bed - he'd woken me by prodding me with a pointy stick. Having gained my attention, he barked "And now for a BONUS FACT!" He proceeded to tell me about things only loosely related to JRR Tolkein: what brand of pipe tobacco his friends preferred, the style of men's shoe popular at the time, and my favourite, what the ostler fed to the horse the day before Edith saw Ronald for the second time. Then we spooned. He was gone by the first morning light. I'll never forget you, Simon!
Thank God we didn't get Cage as Aragorn. Viggo was born for that role. I mean if Nick had gotten it....can you imagine anyone keeping a straight face when Aragorn asks Eowyn "What do you fear, my Lady" in Two Towers? XD
He would've looked great charging wild-eyed and laughing into the hordes of Mordor at the Black Gate though XD

Tolkein was of course, a rare genius and his Lord of the Rings Trilogy is a masterpiece which has influenced other works by other authors. Both Tolkein and his Trilogy and the Hobbit went through a new resurgence in the early 1970s with us Baby Boomers and I remember reading them on the subway on my way to work in NYC back in the day! I got so engrossed in the adventures and fantasy that I almost forgot to get off at my subway stop! I ended up telling my children about them so they also ended up reading them and then went on to become fans of the Games of Thrones series as well! Thanks for sharing this equally fascinating story!

I realise there are normally difficulties involved in making a film from any book,
but the liberties that were taken in this case make me want to completely avoid the LOTR films.
Here, the story As Written and that I have read many times is the only one I can accept.
Tolkien put an awful lot of effort into getting what he wanted on paper, and I do what I can to honour that.
David O'Banion, by all means you have the right to resist Peter Jackson's masterful adaptation of LOTR, but if you haven't even seen the extended version of the movies, I recommend you give it a shot. Yes, he left out Tom Bombadil and in my opinion unforgivably "The Scouring of the Shire". The parts that are left in are very faithful to the books to include dialog taken directly from the books, such as: Gandalf, "At last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin on the mountainside". One of my favorite lines from the trilogy faithfully uttered by Gandalf retelling his battle with the Balrog in the movie. Are the movies the same as the books, no, but they come damn close, especially the extended version.
You're not missing anything. I thought the movies were boring compared to the books.

People need to learn to separate books from movie adaptations and enjoy them separately, instead of being unable to watch the movie because you are constantly making unfair comparisons.
@@Tasorius NO. There are some books with which I could do that, but Not The Hobbit and LOTR. Middle-Earth is a Real Place in my mind, separate from but still part of the planet on which I live, with the West to which the remaining Eldar returned being the unseeable extra mass that causes a slight wobble not otherwise explainable. The history that got things to this point Must be told aright, and even if it is incomplete and not always in agreement with itself, it does not well bear new, man-made ideas that were never originally in it.

I've read the hobbit and the Lord of the rings at least fifty times from the age of eleven. The film is very different to the book in quite a few places. I accept that as a way of keeping the film flowing and provide action for viewers.
@Han Boetes I think that has to do with creating the mood/scene for the movie.
Shame you didn't mention Tolkien's amazing work on Old English literature which he spent much more of his time on.

Today I Found Out I watched that however just how many channels are you running, because you literally must have no time to yourself. Because, at least Simon, is on more than 3 channels, as far as I believe it’s a minimum of 5 currently, some issue more than 5 videos a week
They have many writers for the different channels, a few people managing it all, probably at least one editor on each channel, and Simon, who I still firmly believe has a Time Turner from Harry Potter. He works like 3 people, if you've seen his vlog channel, and yet he narrates for every video on all of the channels from TIFO to Tenz to Visual Politic to this one to......
Biographics and TopTenz are one company. TodayIFoundOut, Highlight History, and the BrainFood Show are another, and VisualPolitik is another. No connection between them other than Simon as the host of course. :-) -Daven

Cage was never offered the role of Aragorn. He was considerer for the role, but never offered it. It's a myth.

When I was in junior high, I found The Hobbit in the school library. I was so intrigued by the runes on the cover and the maps that I just had to copy them down, and I spent the rest of that period in the library, and then home that night, working out what the letters were. Heh. I read my own copy of the book over the summer. I wonder how many other kids, boys, girls, before or during there teens, also had to decipher those runes. I loved the story. It's been a few years since I last reread it, and I loved the movies of the Lord of the Rings. -- I have not seen the recent film about Tolkien's life. He was a great linguist as well as a great author. It must have been really something to have known him.
I'm so serious about my affections for Tolkiens works that it is almost like a religion. I can't bring myself to watch it casually with others, because they're sacred to me, and my children. We laugh, we giggle, we jump, we scream, we cry, we just have every damn emotion and it's so deeply personal, I just cannot take it lightly.
The books just deepen the feeling for us- it should be considered some form of -speciality- I suppose it already is 😊😁

I have been a Tolkien fan since my freshman year ,1967,in college. I found the Lord of the Rings paperback Editionj. I read through the Hobbit which I also purchased and LOTR. Later while serving in the US Navy I was stationed in the Aleutian Islands I played the part Bilbo in an amateur production put on for the personnel and their families. The play got a good review, unfortunately I did not. I have reread the books several times.
Well done! I came across a hardcover "Fellowship of the Ring' that was lurking under a sofa in a university student lounge, and I was hooked! Then I found a plethora of others reading the same books, and it is without a doubt the literature that defines much of our times. He wrote world classics!

Agreed. Especially since Christopher Tolkien is on the record for saying he wants to keep Tolkien's literary heritage as far away from the movies as possible.
When reading any books, we all use our imaginations to give a sort of life to the characters and the stories. Although the movies are not 100% true to the Professor's books, the movies do still bring the characters and stories to life for us. Now, when we read the books, we can get a better idea of what an Ent might actually look like in the real world - and other creatures and places as well. I believe that filming the movies was most certainly not an easy task to accomplish either - considering the rules they had to follow (concerning Tolkien's estate), and the various injuries, of which Viggo Mortenson alone had three and Sean Astin had at least one. I'm sure there were plenty of other injuries as well. It makes filming pretty difficult when your lead actors should be getting stitches or layed up in bed instead of working. Many actors would have caved in upon being injured. I have a very high respect for those that get back up and carry on regardless of the pain. They have an inner strength and a true passion for what they do.
@@Greye13 The movies are more like 25% true to the book, and in many crucial aspects they go completely opposite way to the book. A lot of talented people put their best to the movies, which makes it especially sad that their efforts were wasted on such fundamentally flawed work that any true fan of Tolkien cannot but despise. That may sound harsh, but if you make a movie where Aragorn commits a murder, Elrond is a bitter old bigot, Boromir lies and deceives everyone from the start, Arwen gives up on Aragorn, Frodo turns against Sam, Sam gives up on Frodo, Faramir succumbs to the Ring, Eomer abandons Rohan when he's needed the most and everything that was high and noble is turned petty and despicable, it is well justified.
I read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as a student in middle school but after seeing the movies many times I re-read them and I included the Silmarillion. It is a great story that shows that even the smallest of us can make an important contribution.
He left out the part about Bantam Books stealing the Hobbit in 1964 and printing their own version without Tolkien's permission. He sued and won a 1.1 million suit for copyright infringement. Until that time. The hobbit and lord of the rings had sold less then 100,000 copies for all books worldwide since 1954-55. People in the USA wanted to know why a famous publisher would steal a book. Almost everyone who did went out and bought his books in the US to see what the fuse was about. They were good books so by 1974 just 10 years later. The worldwide sales of All his books was 74 million. Think about that for a min the next time someone steals something from you and you fight back with the law. Today he has sold over 250 million copies of all books world wide and is the largest single author in sales of books. Even more then Harry Potter. Although the Harry Potter series has out sold Tolkien with all those books. Those were not done by a single person. No matter how much they try to say they were. When you write at that level today you have many people helping you with different parts of the book to help get them out fast. With Tolkien, it was all Him. Took him 8 years to right three books. Those books are the best selling books of all time for one mans work of fiction.

I read The Hobbit, and then Lord of the Rings in the mid-sixties, thanks to my High School Sweetheart. I read LOTR cover to cover 3 times during those joyful years, and made more frequent visits to Lothlorien. The trilogy was like nothing else I'd ever read, and I was a voracious reader. Being a Tolkien fan, I absorbed Tolkien trivia, and during that time read a short missive, written by Tolkien himself, as to the origin of the term "Hobbit."
Said missive stated that he was grading exams one day, and one of his students had turned in a blank paper. On this paper the student had written those words with which we now are all so familiar, "In a hole in the ground lived a hobbit." When Tolkien was relating this incident to his readers, he also remarked "Every Professor should get a blank exam paper at least once in his career."
The unprepared student was probably wishing that he could tuck himself into a hole in the ground that day. I can identify with him. I once turned in a blank exam paper, and it was indeed mortifying.

If a company fired me and then told me _I_ was in breach of contract because I didn't work long enough, I don't think I would have good feelings toward them either. Also, how often to people use wence and hence in Modern English anyway? Not very often here in the US at least.
Unfortunately American English is a little different to England English! The amount of time I have to override or ignore a correction by the computer actually makes me giggle. It would seem that although we share a common language they are actually different in a few minor ways! (I am Aussie actually but we do speak our type of English here also.)
The use of those words - at least here in the US - depends on whether or not you are a medieval re-enactor, or how much of an intellectual/historical nerd you are. That would be me on both counts. Lol.

I like the fact that Nicolas Cage turned down BOTH of those movies. I do NOT like the fact that Sean Connery turned them down as well, but for different roles, ultimately leading to his retirement.

I have a friend who sometimes asks me on the phone, “Wherefore art thou?”, meaning where am I. She has a degree in English, believe it or not.

My grandpa who was in his early 70s at the time of the films(rest his soul)was, and to my surprise, very captivated by them as he had been very old school about damn near everything. xD
They did a mind-buggeringly good job on those movies, pretty much as close to the book as a movie has ever managed.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the JRR Tolkien books. I’m so glad that Nicolas Cage did not play the part of Aragon. Viggo Mortensen played the part very well. Russel Crowe would have done well too, I think, given his performance as Maximus in The Gladiator.

Gah, I'm stunned that the man who raised him would forbid him, when he was over 18, to see / write to a woman he was in love with, to try to keep him from it until 21. So he was being a goof. Love and being that age can do that to most of us. Poor Tolkien. At least things turned out OK for him.
