For me, the best scene in Yu-Gi-Oh! Mai was truly the most complex and deep character of all in this anime!! All characters and the video itself belongs to konami.

Well, Mai had some closure. She made some cameos in the KC Championships and the Final Duel between Yugi and Atem. And in the real ending of the Yugioh Anime, she is seen dueling with Vivian Wong against Para and Dox. [Apparently, she got over Jonouchi and found a friend in Vivian (who was rejected and defeated by Yugi after losing to Rebecca Hopkins).] Sounds like a soap Opera, don't it?
The problem with this is that Mai then went and lost off-screen to Rafael. I don't have a problem with her losing that duel, but off-screening it cheapened this scene so much, it felt like we should have seen her fight for Joey's sake and make us feel for her as a redeemed character, rather than the very next scene we see her in being her falling down defeated and soulless. :/
How the bloody hell did she walk out without a soul anyway? But regardless now that you mention it, that would interesting to see even if it was duel that lasted 1 episode.

It really is weird honestly, it's pretty clear Duke was never meant to be part of Yugi's gang but he's always there in filler arcs and was even squeezed into the ceremonial duel so it's just weird they don't do the same for Mai.
I think Mai wanted Joey to hate her, so she would avoid the blame and indirectly prove her right, but until the last moment he was her friend and that broke her heart. In the end she had to accept that she was wrong, and it hurt her so much.

Can you imagine being in her position? She had nobody to support her and she got where she is all on her own. From Duelist Kindgom onwards she was always for her own aspirations because she had no-one else to rely on; of course she became ruthless and "selfish". I was genuinely heartbroken after her duel with Yami Marik. Yeah, she met Joey and co. but how long had she experienced that crushing loneliness beforehand?
What Marik did to her was horrible, I mean even-though he was defeated by Yugi, the Nightmare wasn’t over for Mai. I wished I could see a rematch where Mai takes her revenge against him for her trauma. I could Mai being triggered at the sight of him, to the point she wished Marik was trapped in the horror glass instead of her. She would probably respond to her concerned friends “I hated him all the these years. (Turns to Marik) All the years, I wanted to hurt you, like how you hurt me. You took me away from the people that cared about me. (Tears) I can’t understand why they forgive you. After all you did! You’re a monster! You deserve nothing!”
@@coletrain583 Thing is, it will be the wrong Marik as it was Yami Marik that caused her that pain. And from how it looked at the end, Yami Marik was influencing Marik to some degree. So Mai can't get her revenge.
I really like how they showed the lingering effects of what Marik did. Causing extreme PTSD and depression. Such things can really mess with a person and drive them to do desperate things and push those who care about them away.
I’m surprised nobody is talking about the fact that Joey is the only person that loses his soul whose post on the stone isn’t scared. Everybody else who loses their soul gets displayed with their hands up in panic, but Joey stands tall.

Mai is my best female character in Yugioh. Its just her character went through so many dramas. In Japanese version, Joey actually confessed his feeling to Mai before his soul was taken. Mai been through a lot the whole series. Plus she was such strong duelist.
Valor did say that Mai does love Joey. And I can tell that. And tbh I was hoping that she would say to him, "I love you" when Joey was about to loose his soul.

It's just another anime where the creator thought they were focusing more on the story than the romance, kind of like Bleach's in regards to Ichigo and Rukia. I was pissed this storyline with Mai changed. If she showed this anger right after she was freed from the shadow realm, then it would make more sense. Problem is, these anime shows don't like showing love and relationships which is why we never saw Joey & mai, yugi & tea, and Tristan & serenity hooking up. I wanted Mai to be welcomed back into the group in the final season and watch Atem and yugi duel.

I hated how much they messed up Mai character in season 4. I was absolutely pissed that they made her into something that she wasn't during the series. Poor Joey but still a better love story than Twilight. I would've at least Kept her in character and have her hold him to her chest and then go up against Rafael on screen. Yelling I will never forgive you and use the red eyes black dragon in the battle as a symbol for Joey to be beside her if they had to destroy her character this would be a redemption for her. Then have her soul be taken from her by Malik after the battle after she looses. I hated the writer for saying this couple was just very special friends. Ugh
I was mostly fine with her trauma messing her up like it did. I just wish they hadn't had her forget Joey almost died trying to save her from Marik and instead had her try to recruit him to the villains' side because like her he's always playing second fiddle to Yugi and Kaiba.
The whole saga was tough to watch the whole way through; definitely the darkest of the five Yugioh series. I could not believe what happened to Yugi, Joey and Mai (how could she betray her friends like this?)🙁
Its not that simple. 4kids dub (unsurprisingly) butchered this hard. Her main intentions of joining Dartz was the PTSD from Marik combined with the fear of losing, loss of control that came out of it. She never had any angst to the gang other than the fact that they weren't there for her when she needed, but that is a small reason from the sub.

Everyone is praising this scene for being romantic and such, but can we all not forget the fact Mai left Joey in the cold outside without a roof above his head?
I watched the rest of this season again yesterday and I noticed a plot hole of sorts. After the Pharoah's and Rafael's rematch, Rafael was spared because he broke free of the Oricalcos spell. Why was Joey still captured, then?
The only logic I can think of is that the player who activates the Orichalcos has to overcome from the darkness in their heart. In this situation, mai doesn't break free until after joey loses his soul.
Everyone saying Joey got friendzoned but honestly Mai left after this arc because she felt Joey was too good for her in the end. She was basically never seen again because she couldn’t forgive herself. It’s also a little convoluted how Joey felt about Mai. Did he love her? Maybe. Did he relate to her and her issues? Yeah. Joey was an angry bully once to who was bitter, until Yugi came into his life. It’s possible that separate from any loving feelings he had for Mai, he also just wanted to help her since he knew how she felt.
Yugioh is about the card game and the duels yet somehow created a great love story between two characters in Joey and Mai. A love story better than some anime that do focus on romance. There have been other couples fans ship in yugioh but Joey and Mai is my favorite. The way their relationship develops through the series was amazing. Disappointed we didn't get closure on them. Yeah it's a card game show but god damn can't they let a romance couple happen. I hate it when I get so invested in a couple in a show where romance isn't the focus. Because there is little chance they acknowledge it and make them end up together.
You know what would have made this better? If we actually saw Mai lose to Rafael. Maybe we see her challenge him and throughout the duel it even becomes clear to her that Rafael is just as much of a pawn as she was. She has her back to the wall and what does she draw? Hermos. She tries to play it but like with the Pharoah, some bit of the Orichalcos is still in her(as guilt or rage whatever) and she can't use it. So she loses the duel with Hermos(and by some extension Joey) turning his back on her. This could even help justify her getting off screened for the remainder of the season(and no I do not believe a still shot of her and the fake Chun Li dueling the Paradox Bros counts)

"Seasons"? It's only one. She was fine by Season 5 as we've seen of her at the Grand Championship arc, so it didn't effect her that long.

Idk why some thought they were just friends. There were many instances where the two acted like they were flirting with each other. It's just another anime where the creator thought they were focusing more on the story than the romance, kind of like Bleach's in regards to Ichigo and Rukia. I was pissed this storyline with Mai changed. If she showed this anger right after she was freed from the shadow realm, then it would make more sense.
Problem is, these anime shows don't like showing love and relationships which is why we never saw Joey & mai, yugi & tea, and Tristan & serenity hooking up. I wanted Mai to be welcomed back into the group in the final season and watch Atem and yugi duel.

I hate how this show always shit on Mai she was never allowed to win or be recognized as one of the greatest duelists to the public even though some people would become duelists in one day and suddenly be so amazing but Mai trained all of the time and was in many tournaments but never taken seriously then they give her this huge arc and hen just have her lose to rafael and then just remove her from the show even though she has more potential
Rafael was tough. He beat the pharoh. Mia never did. I do wish they kept Mia. I love her. Everyone needs to show her some respect

I hated how much they messed up Mai character in season 4. I was absolutely pissed that they made her into something that she wasn't during the series. Poor Joey but still a better love story than Twilight. I would've at least Kept her in character and have her hold him to her chest and then go up against Rafael on screen. Yelling I will never forgive you and use the red eyes black dragon in the battle as a symbol for Joey to be beside her if they had to destroy her character this would be a redemption for her. Then have her soul be taken from her by Malik after the battle after she looses. I hated the writer for saying this couple was just very special friends. Ugh

Dartz used Mai's feelings of bitterness and jealousy to control her mind. You can't expect logic from Mai in this season because she's not in control.
Its not that simple. 4kids dub (unsurprisingly) butchered this hard. Her main intentions of joining Dartz was the PTSD from Marik combined with the fear of losing, loss of control that came out of it. She never had any angst to the gang other than the fact that they weren't there for her when she needed, but that is a small reason from the sub.

Her not having her friends there can work greatly as a reason and the stuff with her losing and the PTSD from Marik is still utilized greatly here too, it's not like 4Kids cut out all of that, so don't act like they just watered those reasons down dramatically. I watched the rest of this season again yesterday and I noticed a plot hole of sorts. After the Pharoah's and Rafael's rematch, Rafael was spared because he broke free of the Oricalcos spell. Why was Joey still captured, then?
The only logic I can think of is that the player who activates the Orichalcos has to overcome from the darkness in their heart. In this situation, mai doesn't break free until after joey loses his soul.

Everytime I see Skull Dice, all I can think of is that traumatizing moment when Marik took control of his mind.
Everyone saying Joey got friendzoned but honestly Mai left after this arc because she felt Joey was too good for her in the end. She was basically never seen again because she couldn’t forgive herself.
It’s also a little convoluted how Joey felt about Mai. Did he love her? Maybe. Did he relate to her and her issues? Yeah. Joey was an angry bully once to who was bitter, until Yugi came into his life. It’s possible that separate from any loving feelings he had for Mai, he also just wanted to help her since he knew how she felt.
I loved this battle! I almost cried when Joey gave up for Mai.
This scene brought me to tears as a kid.

Yugioh is about the card game and the duels yet somehow created a great love story between two characters in Joey and Mai. A love story better than some anime that do focus on romance. There have been other couples fans ship in yugioh but Joey and Mai is my favorite. The way their relationship develops through the series was amazing. Disappointed we didn't get closure on them.
Yeah it's a card game show but god damn can't they let a romance couple happen. I hate it when I get so invested in a couple in a show where romance isn't the focus. Because there is little chance they acknowledge it and make them end up together.
I believe that the best couples are in the animes where romance isn't the focus like Naruto or One piece etc

You know what would have made this better? If we actually saw Mai lose to Rafael. Maybe we see her challenge him and throughout the duel it even becomes clear to her that Rafael is just as much of a pawn as she was. She has her back to the wall and what does she draw? Hermos. She tries to play it but like with the Pharoah, some bit of the Orichalcos is still in her(as guilt or rage whatever) and she can't use it. So she loses the duel with Hermos(and by some extension Joey) turning his back on her. This could even help justify her getting off screened for the remainder of the season(and no I do not believe a still shot of her and the fake Chun Li dueling the Paradox Bros counts)
