  • Let me and the House of Angostura introduce you to some drinks that call for large pours of Bitters- no dashes or drops in here. #ad
Shop spirits for your cocktails: bit.ly/H2D-3
Angostura Bitters are a well known bar essential, in addition to tons of drinks calling for dashes and drops of that deep red nectar of the gods, the very definition of the word "cocktail" sort of requires their inclusion. With that established, are there drinks that call for larger amounts of Angostura Bitters as a central foundational component? In fact there are, and this episode is about three of them.
Giuseppe Gonzalez created this drink while working at beloved brooklyn cocktail bar Clover Club.
    *Trinidad Sour*
.75 oz or 22 ml Lemon Juice
1 oz or 30 ml Orgeat Syrup
.5 oz or 15 ml Rye (Greg uses Rittenhouse)
1 oz or 30 ml Angostura Aromatic Bitters
    1 Egg white
    Dry shake
    Add Ice and shake again
    Double strain into a glass
Further demonstrating the maleability of the Last Word Format the Bitter Last Word simply swaps the gin for Angostura Bitters and it works marvelously.
    *Bitter Last Word*
.75 oz or 22 ml Lime Juice
.75 oz or 22 ml Luxardo Maraschino
.75 oz or 22 ml Green Chartreuse
.75 oz or 22 ml Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Shake over ice Strain into glass
And for a tropical, tiki-esque departure, I am blown away by this AngoColada from Zac Overman at Fort Defiance
    *AngoColada*
2 oz or 60 ml Pineapple Juice
1 oz or 30 ml Lime Juice
1.5 oz or 45 ml Cream of Coconut
.5 oz or 15 ml Overproof Rum (Greg Uses Forres Park Puncheon Rum)
1.5 oz or 45 ml Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Shake over ice Half open gate pour into glass
Top off with crushed ice Garnish with umbrella and orange wheel (feel free to improvise) Drink with straw

Later, I mixed him a drink and he grimaced. "What is that???"

I have a neurological condition that can halt my digestive system and my neurologist started having me take shots of digestive bitters before meals because she said the big pharma medications are just miserable. Turns out, I have quite a taste for bitters and I’ve found quite a few that work really well for my digestive whoas.
But, what I particularly love with Angustora is that deep gentian flavor that’s so distinctive. I’ve been known to sort of keep a weird baby bar cart stocked with Campari/Aperol/etc, Bénédictine, several bottles of Agustora, one bottle of either gin or tequila, one bottle of Old Grand Dad bonded, and maybe some ginger beer or tonic and I’m sort of set. Definitely have just done bitters on ice for pure recreational reasons. 😎

Rittenhouse Rye has easily become my absolute favorite Rye Whiskey.
When I first tasted it, the flavor reminded me of being 10 years old with my dad in the woods, on a cold November morning, going deer hunting, smelling the scent of the dirt and nature around me. Standing on top of the hill on our property, with the moon shining bright overhead and you can just barely see the sun trying to start peaking over the horizon. Climbing up into the tree stand and waiting the next 30 minutes or hour until the sun comes up.
A very nostalgic flavor to me. Absolutely love that whiskey.

I bought literally every book on your recommend list! And I've been binge watching every episode for the past two weeks! Your channel is F-ing awesome. I actually spent money 20 years ago to go to bartending "college", never got a job out of it and I've learned WAY more watching your show than I did with their course. Please, keep up the great work!

I've been using Angostura bitters a lot recently to make a very simple non-alcoholic drink. I just add about 10 dashes of bitters to 12oz of root beer (preferrably the slightly fancier stuff, like Virgil's or something). It tones down the syrupy sweetness that soda can have, and it really amps up the herbal flavors.

It makes simple stuff taste.. full.

Adding that to my new find of Blackened American Whiskey (met the distiller, got a selfie and a signature!!). 2 shots whiskey, one shot simple syrup, 4 dashes Orange Angostura Bitters, one orange peel, one giant block of ice. Paired with Goldfish crackers because Mom Life LOL
