Gotta say... that drunken Thai Iced Coffee looks pretty delicious... it's fairly adjacent to a White Russian or White Cuban, but with a Thai spin.
What has this "show" become?
@@Xomsabre agree, that sounds legit good. I want to try it with coconut milk.. I think that could bring it even more to the realm of Thai tea.
We don't have Mr. Black where I live
Greg plugging Behind The Bar’s video ina video sponsored by Mr. Black is proof to me that Melbourne’s bar culture, coffee culture and bartending is world-class. What I needed to feel after ANOTHER lockdown. (A result of the federal government’s failure to provide vaccines to the population at the rate of any other developed country)
Great video and thank you so much for the shout out Greg! I’m watching this drinking my morning coffee in Australia and really wishing it was a cocktail now haha…
Two of my favorite channels! Much love
These both have inspired me to add something other than Espresso Martini with Mr Black in me Bar that only serves Australian made sprits and liqueurs. Thanks guys!!!
When there is no flavor that dominates the bouquet, it indicates that the ingredients have been combined to create something greater than the sum of its individual parts.
This is one of those statements where if you add to it or take away from it, then everything falls apart. Well done.
@@kungfuman82 Thank you. [bows]
yeah that's how you can tell a drink is balanced. Like a proper Manhattan doesn't smell like rye whiskey or like vermouth or like bitters, it smells like a Manhattan
This explains my issue with a lot of the "[brand] coffee" stuff. Looking at you Jameson
So me and my group of friends started playing vampire the masquerade and our base is in a cocktail bar/ lounge and We named one of our bartenders Greg
Sounds really fun!
Vampire: The Masquerade. Man, that takes me back. 🤘🏻
niiiice. love V:tM
Oh! Our coterie had their base in a speakeasy under a funeral home! Same hat!!!
Can you do an episode on bitters? My local liquor store has a huge wall of a variety of unique and obscure bitters. One in particular that caught my interest was a rhubarb bitters, but don't know what to make with it.
Here in Portland there's a famous brewery called "Deschutes" they have a rhubarb margarita and a rhubarb sidecar
I do a rhubarb old-fashioned with mine. Barspoon of rhubarb cordial (rhubarb syrup) in place of the sugar componant. Very nice.
Id use rhubarb wherever you could use orange bitters or Peychaud's for the most part. If you substitute Peychaud's you won't be getting the anise of course but I just think rhubarb wpuld work with those drinks.
A lot of fruit bitters (yes, I know rhubarb is not technically a fruit) go very well in vermouth spritzers. Add a dash or two to 2 shots vermouth bianco with a quarter lemon and a top up of club soda. Cranberry bitters tastes amazing this way. I'll bet rhubarb would work well too.
Something I came up with at home about a year ago that I still haven’t come up with a name for:
In a rocks/old fashioned glass
2 oz bourbon
1 oz simple syrup
1 oz cherry liquor
4 dashes ango
2 dashes rhubarb
in "The Curse of Monkey Island" (Monkey Island 3), on Blood Island there is a book with cocktail recipes.
Could you please make an episode with those drinks ... pretty please with demerara on top
The whole Monkey Island series is filled with iconic beverages and whimsical mixed drinks. Agree it’d be a great episode
Served in a half-melted mug, or a glas with broken edges ;)
Yes please!
There's a whole side quest about those! You just unlocked a memory my dude.
In which Greg make ANOTHER video solely to advance his lifelong goal of a James Hoffman collab.
Bottle: “the spirit of Thailand”
Greg: “so this is sort of the spirit of Thailand”
Spitting facts
Based on his reaction, this Mekong is NOTHING even close to the original.
@@Fork4Fun A year late to reply, but: To be fair, it is my understanding the actual Mekong is nothing like the original Mekong. That's authenticity. Especially if it's bottled in China!
Any plans for a brandy episode? Would love to get into the history of Cognac/Armagnac plus other styles and aging!
Don't forget those Eaux de Vies!
Just bought some Cognac today and I second this
Okay, so I'm a Humphries born near Dallas. Not sure why that matters, but your screen name sure made me blink, lol
Hey Greg, my name is LV. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your work and your channel. The first video of yours that I stumbled on was the Monster Hunter one you did a few months back, and I found myself so intrigued. I was always the "drinks" guys at parties with friends; so I started making some of your recipes for those friends and at home for my girlfriend. She loved them and realized how much fun I was having. A few months back I got certified for Mixology and I have been loving every moment of learning new drinks and serving them up for patrons and loved ones alike. Thanks for inspiring me so much over these past few months. 😊
I mean a coffee Milkshake with some Mr black sounds like it could mix well
Sounds tasty!
Awesome to see a video of Cara's featured on your channel, lots of us bartenders here in Melbourne love the stuff you put out!
Much love from Australia!
Sweet. Just bought a bottle yesterday. Also ... Neatest pours in the history of this channel on that first drink? Have you been practicing, Greg?
Must have been the first episode shot of the day.
@@JamesNestaCirrito Naa, you gotta have a few drinks first to get rid of the shakes...right?
Literally all he does on this channel is practicing.
“Spanish inquisition” tasting note had me absolutely howling, superb mate
I did not expect that.
@@thynnus2422 no one does
0:24 seconds into coffee and chill and he gives you this look. O.O
It might not scream "SUMMER" as overtly as those showcased in this episode, but your original Chiapparoni w/ Mr. Black, Reposado and Amaro Angostura deserves an honorable mention. It's become a standby in our house and my girlfriend has been asking for it by name recently. Admittedly, she BUTCHERS the name every time, but I know what she's talking about because it's been such a hit.
OK, tried the Margarita Negra - since I only had Espolon Reposado, the drink came out very tequila forward. Changed it up for the second one by reducing the tequila to .5oz and increasing the Mr. Black to 1.5oz. PERFECT!
Sounds amazing!
Greg, thanks for the intro to Behind the Bar, somehow the YT algorithm hadn't bubbled Clara up, instantly subscribed there too
Greg, you and the HTD team have given me so much joy over the last few years. Thank you!
I could totally see a beverage called " Black ice" which would be Mr. Black on the rocks, but the ice used would just be frozen black coffee. Gonna have to pick me up a bottle to try that...
The Cara shout-out made me SOOOO HAPPYYYYYY!!!! Her channel is my second favorite after you. Between your uploads I'm binging hers and she's fantastic!
Great, now I have to start trying Mr. Black in every cocktail I make. Gotta figure Mr. Black into the monthly budget... Thanks Greg!
I owe you my life for introducing me to Mr. Blacks that shit SLAPS omg
Amazing to hear Hannah!
Not ten minutes before starting this episode, on a whim I mixed up a shot of Mr. Black and absinthe. My initial thought was that I wanted to enjoy some Mr. Black, but I wanted to spice it up, and I was going to try it with some orange liqueur, but then I saw my absinthe and had a revelation.
The result was that I have never tasted a more licorice beverage in my life. I think that there's something to be found in the mixture. Of all the licorice-like liqueurs out there, I don't know that absinthe is the best to do this with, but there is definitely something to be found in the combination.
I drive to Massachusetts so I can get Mr. Black. It’s well worth it
Shakerato sounds interesting, as I absolutely *loved* the Juniper Latte that Starbucks had as a winter seasonal drink for a couple of years. That juniper, coffee, and orange flavor was just unexpectedly lovely. So this seems like it might have a bit of a similar thing going on.
Honestly I love your energy and happiness, it's contagious
Mr Black is great, this channel is how I found it. Good work!
Cheers!
A shot of espresso with a twist of lemon is called Espresso Romano. I made one a couple times when I was a barista. It's pretty good.
I love Espresso, Rye, and Orange peel shaken over ice personally
This is perfect right now! My friends and I just got a different coffee liqueur so we need these to use it. Thank you!
Mmmm the tequilla coffee is on the hit list. Mr.Bali is one of my favs. And the Thai iced coffee - NICE!
Waohhh I’ve been wanting some kind of coffee drinks, this is just perfect timing
My wife is Thai and we actually run a Thai food truck. We use half and half for our Thai coffee and Thai tea! works great! You should try some whisky in a Thai tea as well, its delicious.
I made my Shakerato with Select and Cantera Negra and it turned out fantastic too.
hey, long time watcher and part time lurker on your twitch! thank you for making HTD, i recently became a bartender and have been binging these to learn how to talk about drinks more and make them special. appreciate you and what you do! thank you!
Just made a Margarita Negra. I didn’t have tajin so I rimmed it with a mix of salt and chili powder. Yummy!
Since watching this video I decided to try the Margarita Negra and good lord is it good. I ran out of limes and used lemon and it's just as good! The tajin adds a necessary kick. Great drink, Thanks Greg for the great content!
Jameson cold brew, tonic water and lime is one of my favorite summer cocktails.
Hey just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work an all this amazing content!!!! C:
I just made a margarita negra for myself at home, but I had the mezcal barrel Mr. Black, so I subbed the Blanco out for mezcal, and it actually works really well. Greg mentioned how the taste of the tequila isn't there in his, but with mezcal, the smokiness and overall flavor still shines through
Glad to see a new episode in my RUclips and as always its a great watch
All of this sounds delightful, and I look forward to trying all of these. Probably (definitely) in large quantities.
Definitely trying these ❤️❤️❤️
Love seeing the behind the bar shoutout. That channel deserves way more attention.
I love Thai iced coffee! This makes me really want a Thai Tea cocktail now.
Trying all of these for sure!! Pairing with a Cigar. Thank you for sharing.❤️🌹
Hooray for coffee cocktails!
Espresso with lemon is also known as café Romano.
Your profile pic looks nasty
@@TwoMenInACloset Am I supposed to care? Were you trying to hurt my feelings or something? Lol.
I like jukon jack with a good strong coffee and of a dash of cream. So I definitely agree that orange and coffee go well together.
Gonna try these. Thanks. Right now, it's 109f. I'm sitting in an un-air conditioned van drinking super hot coffee (really, the only way to drink it) but these sound pretty good
Bought some Mr Black last time you did a video with them, will have to try some of these out! Having some summer applications is very welcome :)
Cheers Paul!
I saw that cold brew shakerato and just had to run downstairs and make one. I used Dr. McGillicuddy's coffee liqueur and a less-than-dry gin. This drink is lovely! Dark chocolate up front, fading into a bitter orange that lingers for a while, and then settling into coffee mostly in the nose as it fades. I love this.
Mr. Black has become the most recommended thing in my bar, on the rocks or another way this stuff is addicting
Cheers legend!
Love Mr Black with simple syrup 2oz of each 👌
Mr Black 2oz, Rittenhouse 2oz, Orange Bitters and 7up to taste makes a super alcoholic shandy tasting drink 😍
Mr Black 3-4oz, dark/golden rum 1-2oz and milk to taste is gorgeous and is great for summer (alcoholic coffee milkshake) ❤️
Cheers!
@@MrBlackSpirits cheers right back at you 😁
Oooooh, shakerato. Need to try that… love me some Campari! Also love the Cara Devine shout out- great to see support across the community :) Cheers!!
Mr. Black really is the business.
Thanks Greg! This is totally my jam!
Especially the Thai Iced Coffee!
Greg , I have to thank you. I've always liked a good drink, and have had a fairly extensive home bar for years, but never out it to proper use. Binge watching your show has inspired me to finally start mixing.
Huge fan by the way.
I have been watching for a long time bit just barely started mixing cocktails myself
I was gifted a bottle of coffee liqueur from a coworker recently so I'll definitely be trying these :)
Thanks to your previous episodes I allready went out and bought both Casamigos blanco AND Mr black! Going to make that margarita tonight!
Cheers Giles!
@@MrBlackSpirits it really is amazing! I've never had a coffee margarita before but it was amazing! I can't wait for this lockdown to end so I can come and visit you guys! (Or maybe you can come and do a pop up in Melbourne sometime!)
Thanks for the cardamom tip.
As somebody who's spent his share of time contemplating the state of the world, seated at the iced coffee place on the sidewalk near the Grand President Hotel on Soi 11 I can tell you the the best way to stir your coffee is to jam the straw to the bottom of the drink, plug the top, lift it, then release your thumb. It's slow but you're in Bangkok and it's that time of day when we drink coffee so you've got the time to do this right.
Three drinks I would definitely make
I can't wait for your cocktail book to come out! Please make one.
I love the extreme closeups and slow motion takes you do, that's why I keep coming back to the channel. Greg's pretty funny too, I guess.
The margherita negra is great! I would adjust the amount of agave syrup though, perhaps .25 oz. It's rather sweet
Going to try all of them. Regarding Thai coffee, the only time I have come across cardamon in coffee was in the Middle East where they often use it to flavour coffee.
Spiking your coffee with fireball is also really good cause it just tastes like coffee and sweet cinnamon and its easy to make. It can also be enjoyed both hot and cold so have fun.
I discovered the Margarita Negra some years ago and its a personal favourite. It was taught to me as a 'South of the Border' and used Kahlua for the coffee element. I agree that the Tequila can get lost though. I tried Reposado but I missed the fresh peppery-ness of blanco. Solution: dial up the Tequila to 2.5 shots (or even 3 if its not a school night!)
On the wagon for a while to try to detox my fatty liver sadly, but I want to try each of these when the blood test improves! Wonderful cocktails!
I would love to see a winter/cold weather list, especially because I like drinks on the sweet side
Depending on the coffee and how it's been roasted you'll get the more floral/green/fruity flavor notes so that's why it's amazing when you get those notes and add citrus from lemon/lime/orange.
One of my favorite summer drinks is 8oz of tonic water and 4 oz of cold brew. Maybe add an oz of gin to make it an adult beverage?
My personal favorite coffee drink is the white Russian. The way I mix mine makes it taste a little chocolatey even though there's no chocolate in it.
Love this vlog great reviews
Awesome videos! These coffee cocktails always remind me of a coffee drink called "Barraquito", even though it´s a hot drink. It´s a really simple drink from Tenerife. I bet you could give it a nice twist and make it even better!
It may be time to have a coffee themed day time drink sesh with the friends!
mixed shots served in different hot-peppers (seeds have the heat so a seed in or seed out option)
a sweet bellpepper cocktail served in the pepper itself
I love that at the end, Greg waited until the gesturing was done to put the linked videos were added. That was funny to watch.
Early gang gang. I’m so ready to the coffee cocktails.
I am so excited about this episode, I literally had this question last week. What cocktails can I make with Mr. Black during the summer HOT months in Texas. Thank you!!
Cheers Samuel!
Ps you told us to watch the old ones, I’m about 1/2 done and excited for the rest
The original spec for the Mr. Bali Hai calls for a dark Jamaican rum and a “light rum” which was most likely Puerto Rican and so would be lightly aged and filtered. I like using Coruba Dark and Hamilton White Stache in mine but it’s a fun spec to play with and use all kinds of various rums. Cheers!
the espresso with lemon peel you mentioned is known as an "espresso romano" and it's absolutely delicious
Black cardamom in the Thai coffee cocktail would be interesting to try, as the it sounds like the deeper, smokey flavour of black cardamom might help tie in the bright flavour of green cardamom and meld it well with the coffee.
The margarita negra has been one of my favorites for a while now, I make this for friends when they come over and I've leavened to not tell them what's in it until after they take a sip and go "holy shit, show me how you made that" haven't had one person who dislikes it yet
Should see if there’s any spin to make on patron’s cafe mañana, quickly became a favourite
As an Australian I’m very proud of my country’s coffee culture
My parents have been to Italy, Turkey, Morocco, Greece and Spain
They still say the best coffee they’ve ever had is in Melbourne
Subbing the .5oz of simple in the Mr. Bali Hai with .75 Creme de Banane’ is so freaking good!
Love your videos Greg, I will definitely try the margarita, as a separate note, have you ever tried Rompope? This is a Mexican sweet liquor similar to eggnog, but I’ll like to see what you can come up with it, I know it blends good with coffee too. Also, I love how you express yourself about tequila.
I live in Thailand, and never heard of combining good old ice coffee with mekong! Will have to give it a try ;)
I made the "Thai Coffee cocktail" in hopes it might be a rare drink both my wife and I could enjoy (our taste preferences tend to be at odds). I tried finding Mekhong, but for the life of me, could not... so I substituted some spiced rum. It was great! And a success in the fact it was something we could both enjoy.
Thanks for creating that masterpiece!
Expresso is traditionally served with lemon peal and zest so makes sense to use the citrus in the Margarita Negro
Coffee and booze. A perfect match!
Amen
We have a shop in Warsaw that sells coffee with different aromas and they have orange one. It's really nice, but I also like the coconut one very much. Here in Lyon I discovered coffe in form of a chocolate tablet, without chocolate in it. It's like coffee you can bite.
i just steep a teabag with spices in strong coffee, lat that cool down completly and add ice, orange peel and golden rum
Made a iced coffee cocktail with Mr Black for my girls last weekend, got 2 thumbs up.
Used 3/4 oz light rum and half & half for mine
@@markdurham5062 Sounds tasty!
That saline trick was cool.
I was very skeptical that coffee and lime juice could work together. However, I made a Margarita Negra and it was good. At first, I didn't notice the coffee, but eventually I did start tasting it after the tart intensity of the lime faded. Maybe that's the evolution Greg's always talking about. The coffee and lime didn't clash. I used Jameson's Cold Brew, since that was the only good coffee liquor I had on hand. I've ordered some Mr. Black, so I'll compare the result once it arrives.
Just tried the margarita negra, complete with tajin rim... God damn that's good. Good shout on the tajin!
I really like using the Fire Syrup from the David Martinez with the Margarita Negra instead of the Agave
