    Always enjoy the "History" episodes because they help equip me to provide a better experience for my guests 💪. I love it when I can share some of the history behind someone's favorite drink or if they ask about something they've never tried. I've noticed that guests often enjoy engaging with you when you're excited about sharing your knowledge and passion. I've turned more than one guest of mine into newly budding mixologists, which is what it's all about man 👏. Ask them what customers usually order, what the highest volume cocktail is, what they notice people don't really enjoy, etc. If they actually care they will be just *waiting* for someone to be interested. I love teaching my team members about my passion, and it will certainly help you better serve your covers by being able to confidently answer guest questions, make recommendations, all that!

    Tom Collins is my go to when I don't know a bar; no matter what proportions the bartender gives you it will still be fine. Even when a (young) bartender doesn't know it, they can figure out how to mix those simple ingredients. Also a great backup if someone doesn't like the drink you're making. I bet your homemade ginger syrup would be a great twist while maintaining that refreshing lemon.

    If anyone is wondering what maraschino liqueur tastes like (since it obviously isn't just cherry liqueur) it's apparently inflused with the stems, pits, and leaves of Luxardo's cherries. So imagine a nutty, bitter, almost stick-like plant flavor but heavily sweetened. It's neat stuff!

    Hey hey greg, as someone with german family I can try to explain the whole seltzer thing, there are several mineral springs in Germany that actually produce naturally carbonated mineral water! One of the towns is called seltzer (where the word came from) the brand that uses the spring in seltzer is called selters. Usually Germans are very picky about what people call carbonated mineral water because of seltzer Usually just casually meaning either the town or selters brand carbonated water. May be wrong but that's the way my family out in Germany explained it. Have a good night/morning greg!

    • @ilikeyourname4807
      @ilikeyourname4807 Год назад +3

      I'm from Germany and my family has always been referring to any carbonated water as "Selter". So it's not a monolithic thing all Germans will care about

    • @ankhtahr1401
      @ankhtahr1401 Год назад +1

      It's also a very regional thing in Germany. In the north, where I grew up (in Schleswig-Holstein), "Selter" / "Selterwasser" is just a generic term for sparkling water. In the south it's often referred to as Sprudel, and "Selters" refers to the brand instead. To add to the confusion, Sprudel can also refer to Sprite-like "lemonades", as in "Zitronensprudel".

      Most young people fall into one of two camps. Either dumb binge drinkers who don't taste anything until they throw it up, or people who try to taste *everything* (but never make it far past the alcohol) and wonder what the hell us old people are talking about. Honestly as your tastes "mature" (literally taste buds die over time meaning a peanut butter and jelly sandwich just might be the pinnacle of culinary achievement) you will come to appreciate bitter and astringent flavors more and it becomes easier to tease out the flavors which are hiding behind the ethanol.
      In the mean time, try beer. Especially stouts or lambics or beers mixed with various juices like a shandy and don't feel bad. Also tiki. There are loads of approachable drinks in tiki which have interesting and complex profiles but don't taste like racing fuel.

      if we're giving this person advice, i like to mix spirits with unflavored soda water in a maybe 5050, but do it to your liking . for example, i cannot drink whiskey still, its just too much for me, and i can't even begin to taste all the subtle notes people talk about, but mix it with soda water and something abt the dillution and the effervescence makes it so that the bitter and alcoholic flavors aren't too strong and the nice notes and flavors are more present. you can of course add fruit juices, bitters, whatever from there (personally i like a bit of maple syrup mixed w a little warm water to get it thin enough to disperse) but the standard soda + spirit is already a good start
      on a very different note, fanta/jarritos mixed w light mexican beer (eg corona) is 👌👌

    Hey Greg! Been watching your show for a long time now and you’ve helped me re-discover my love of mixology. So much so, I’ve been practicing my skills at home over the past few weeks. Thank you for helping me not give up on a passion of mine!
    I followed your recipe for the basic Tom Collins at the beginning of this episode, and after you played with the idea of using Italicus (something I discovered only recently and love the flavor profile of) I added 0.5 oz of Italicus to it, and it really makes for an interesting drink. It feels like it might be missing something, but it feels like a good start to another alternative Tom Collins. I wanted to share this experiment with you because of that.
    Thanks again man, love the show as always, and keep being awesome!

    I am not much of a cocktail drinker, but I love the idea of them and seeing how they are made. And one of the things I really like about this channel is the generally laid back but informative tone. There's no gatekeeping or any sense of exclusion, but very much the opposite. My favourite little invention started as a play on a Tom Collins I put together after a trip to Sweden; I call it the Aurora. Swap out the gin for Swedish akvavit (stay with me lol), pour over crushed ice, and balance out the earthy/herby notes with a float of creme du menthe; it’s funky but I like it.

    Love the channel, Greg! My favorite way to spruce up my own Tom Collins is to back off half of the simple syrup and add 1oz of Limoncello to kick up the cartoony lemon flavor. Hey! So I just tried a spin on the improved Tom Collins. Instead of Luxardo I used Wigle Eau De Pickle (a dill pickle liqueur made by a local distillery,) and instead of absinthe I used a dash of Bittermens Hellfire Habanero Shrub. It was surprisingly refreshing! It had a very herbaceous and slightly vinegary taste on top of the lemonadey flavor of the Tom Collins. Will definitely be playing around with it! Thanks for the inspiration!!

    This was posted basically the same day that I was experimenting with what I've also been calling an "augmented Tom Collins"; my version adds Angostura bitters and a few drops of orange blossom water for something that sort of nods in the direction of a Ramos gin fizz. I do 3 dashes of the ango and then literally just stir the drink with a cocktail pick dipped in orange blossom water and it completely changes the character of the drink with those floral notes.
