A question people always ask me is "Where should I start if I'm interested in mixology" or "What's a good drink for someone who's not in love with "spirit forwards" drinks?" and I think the best answer is actually a sour drink, really any of them. Yes- from a historic perspective an Old Fashioned is slightly more foundational, but honestly that's something you do kind of need to learn to love- a whiskey sour isn't like that. Additionally, sours have been around nearly as long as the most historic and roots basic of cocktails and they really show off the transformative power of drink mixing. With all of these you'll put ingredients together and get something our of your shaker that is more than the sum of its parts, the perfect little piece of mixology magic to get you to fall in love with mixing drinks. And most importantly, really none of these are terrifically complicated, you can easily master one of these drinks without having ever touched a shaker before. I put this list together specifically to try and include every base spirit, so depending on your taste there's should be something here for everyone.

Just wanted to let you know that a trump ad came up before this video. Not saying anything one way or another, but if that was something you weren't stoked on, I wanted to let you know. Love the channel.
I fucking LOVE your channel! Thank you for everything, man 🥃👌🏻
As an aspiring mixologist and bartender though having never have drank before due to being currently underaged thankfully that changes this year
I appreciate this greg
Don't listen to the 'short videos' people!! Your narration/expertise/commentary is essential and must not be edited out!!!!!
Greg, this is my favorite type of "How To Drink". I've seen them all but I much prefer the history lesson/tutorial style. Not saying I won't still watch whatever drink you make inspired by Fineas and Ferb or whatever...
I myself prefer the drinks based on fiction, but I'm liking your comment for how respectfully you got your opinion across. It's something that is often overlooked on the internet.
While the fictional drink ones are fun, I love learning about the history of mixology even more. Greg does pretty darned well with both!

You can't live without coffee 😊💕✌
I think quarantine cabin fever came into play there.
I love these back-to-basics shows that reference your old content and index it all under a common theme. As a bonus, you get to talk about half a dozen drinks without getting hammered ☺️👍
Have you ever thought of creating your own drinks book??
I’d love to buy it with all of your creations in each category of main drink

Eh, I prefer the longer videos, we get to see more of your personality like this 😆
they're the better format for sure- but believe me, I'd LOVE to finish work by 2pm.

Been drinking whiskey sours all quarantine. Eager to try variations.
All quarantine? How's your liver going lmao
I started making drinks right around when Greg's first whiskey sour video came out and it has been my favorite drink ever since
@Long Nards literally no one asked you. Enjoy your sours, guy, and stay well everyone.
@Long Nards ignore the negativity. Thanks for the suggestions.
Try an Amaretto Sour:
1.5oz Amaretto
.5oz Bourbon
1oz Lemon Juice
.3oz Simple Syrup
Its a favorite anytime i make it for someone.
As someone who loves learning about history, I forgot that there is a lot of history behind cocktails and you have gone the distance time and time again to educate us about the history of cocktails. You never disappoint. Thank you Greg!
I’d love to see a brandy video, the same way you tackled gins. Talking about cognac and armignac and your “classic” brandies, but also stuff like applejack and pisco.
Whomever is complaining about the episodes being TOO long are insane!!! I know it's more work (and I, for one, appreciate all the work you put in) but I love the longer, more fun and educational episodes!!!
A+ usage of Star Trek IV.
Glad someone appreciated it
He buried himself in the part.
Learning the 2/1/1 template really changed my Cocktail experience. Cocktails went from mystical recipes that can not be changed. They had names that you had to write down and remember. Now it's pretty much, throw in 2 strong, 1 sour, 1 sweet and see how it tastes
I don't drink coffee (or alcohol, really) but that sponsor ad was hilarious
It was also really well produced. How many sponsor spots on RUclips get such good footage and editing?
speaking of sours, have you ever made a "Fox and Hounds?" it's basically an egg white whiskey sour with absinthe. it's fantastic.
Looking this one up....
I'd love to see an episode detailing as many cocktails as possible that call for coffee and/or chocolate ingredients.
Especially more "dessert" cocktails.
I feel like a lot of cocktails are great for social drinking, but what if I wanna enjoy some solo time with my favorite comfort flavors such as chocolate and espresso?
The Jack Rose is one of my absolute favorite cocktails. Milk and Honey has a variation called the Pan American Clipper which adds in a little Absinthe. Definitely worth a try
Geez that sounds good. I will definitely have to give that a try.
Yeah just spray the top with Absinthe! (Right?)
Ooooooo
Mmm, whiskey sour - my go-to when I want a drink but I REALLY want some maraschino cherries 😁
Loved the outro on that one, "I'm Greg" XD
I like the way you bring style, humor, history with a smidge of retro charm. Your show a cocktail of sorts🤣 cocktail of cocktails 😁 but seriously brilliant stuff Greg!
I actually just made a New York Sour for the first time a few days ago according to your old video specs, and had trouble keeping a red wine float with egg whites. Its honestly great to see you willing to go back and update old recipes! I am for sure going to make another one right now without egg white and see how it goes!
the problem with that episode is mainly the edit and my delivery- It's a New York sour... but really a Fancy Sour served 1890's style, the point there was to throw the kitchen sink at it, and I THOUGHT i explained that but like, I guess I didn't
@@howtodrink Yeah, it wasn't bad or anything. It just was a bit advanced for me as a beginner cocktail-maker to try to float red wine between the drink and the foam like was recommended online. I think giving the simpler to make version for beginners to cocktail making is a great idea!
Also just wanted to say that I love your content, you got me started in the world of cocktail-making which is like my favorite hobby. Also I absolutely love your Miracle Pill drink, its honestly the greatest cocktail I tasted so far and i've been making a lot of them!
I never had a problem with that. I know a lot of people do. The wine floats nicely between the fome and main drink. Use a spoon. I did it earlier today in a hurricane glass.
Work on it and you will get it down.
Can't go wrong with an Amaretto Sour, 100% my favorite drink. Although, I would love to try out some more sours!
I love long form Greg. I learn so much just hearing you go on and on about the history and tasting notes, super interesting and engaging.
Everytime I watch you Greg its like I've just come back to Greg's ol neighborhood bar for the millionth time and its fantastic. Also I love seeing what sponsors you go for, always good to see you get a new one.
I can’t get enough of this channel. The natural presentation feels like I’m at the bar having good banter, and the editing is so wonderfully timed I can’t stop laughing.
I’m also learning about drink culture. LOVE this!
Hey Greg, I was a little bit disappointed about there not being the close up still shots of the drinks with the ingredients listed. I like to screenshot those and use them for recipes later on. Please bring them back 🙏
Agreed on this. Still a great video, but this would also be an easy way to spread the “new” recipes if Greg made a mistake (or just found a better mix) on a previously filmed drink.
Yo I like these longer videos. These are dope. I love the history aspect of these cocktails and liquors. I go back and watch the Absinthe video all the time. Thanks for the time you put into em!
Hey Greg! I got some cocktail gear through last week. Planning on upgrading from my usual beer/ciders and rum/gin diets to some more sophisticated refreshments all thanks to yourself and Nick Fisher. Keep up the good work man.
Love whiskey sours and margaritas; they're two of my favorite drinks. Have you tried pisco sours? It's the national drink of Peru and became really popular stateside in the last decade. It uses pisco, lime juice, gum syrup, egg whites, and garnished with a dash of angostura bitters. Delicious.
Try Amargo Chuncho bitter if you can get your hands on it. It is the one used originaly in Peru for Pisco Sours.
I like the new formats Greg, Thanks for your efforts!
Yup sours are what got me to learning more about mixology
My family NEVER made mixed drinks growing up, and I've only just been getting to try some with my boyfriend over the last year. I really appreciate the recipes you come up with and share! It's made this so much more accessible for me.
You briefly mentioned it, but my favorite thing about a Mess Night is the grog. It is a lot better than I was expecting when I first tried it. And I would love to see you make it sometime.
I love the 15min+ episode length. The history and tasting notes are always great to listen to while I work
I absolutely love your opening and background music, wonderful!

I've been watching your RUclips channel for months now and I turn 21 in just 13 days and I have a book written down for how to mix properly and make something special. First drink I made from you was the dole whip from Disneyland and me and my family loved it
Gotta say man this channel has been a godsend during lockdown. I did ten years behind bars and love making cocktails and I have been getting right back into mixology of late, because what else is there to do in lockdown right? Love that you’re a Daiquiri purist like me 🤣🤣🤣

I 100% agree with you on the Lairds blended Applejack, bought a bottle of it and quickly relegated it to Hot Toddy duty, the Bottled in Bond is soooo much better.
Greg! My dude! I love your show and love your drinks and the historic info on each. I can't get enough of watching your channel. I do however have a single gripe. When you do episodes that showcase several drinks, I wish you would flash the picture of the drink with the full ingredient list like you do for the episodes that only showcase a single drink. This would be awesome and so helpful because I take screenshots of each cocktail on my phone so that I can recreate them when the need arises
I love the history that you provide with your videos!
For the record, I'm new to your channel and I love the length of the videos. I'll take all the rambling I can get.
Just successfully made my first New York Sour with your tutorial! It’s awesome!
Literally exactly how I started. Good drinks, solid foundations. Good job Greg :)
you are my inspiration to mixology! and now i love whiskey sours!!
They look amazing! 😍😍
Your pouring game has really leveled up! 👍👍👍
Love your content, Greg!
you are a whole rabbit hole... I love it!
Tried the New York sour tonight, it's really good! Comes together in a way I did not expect.
I'm obsessed with sours, I love citrus in everything. I would drink an amaretto sour on my vacations endlessly. Maybe a mojito to switch it up if the sugar was to much. I haven't tried many of those so I'll going to have to try them all now. Thanks, I enjoy your content a lot and your supper funny and awesome at getting one history of the drinks and making it approachable.
This video was very helpful and informative, Prohibition cocktails are also a classic era where drinks were crafted with what you had and not what someone necessarily wanted. The Bees Knees is one that in my opinion deserves to be remembered even if it is more of a novelty

What does a pirate like in his sour?
Arrange juice.
sorry I'll see my way out.

@@polarbear353 Lol, too condescending!
I like the videos. I like the drinks. I like the rambly little tangents and the humor sprinkled throughout the show. But for cutting away to a clip of Star Trek IV The Voyage Home for such a minor yet perfect reason, I will love you forever.
This Version of your NY Sour is my go to mixed drink. My wife enjoys red wines so I siphon off a few ounces of her bottle. Love your content and your Twitter feed!
Did the regular Jack Rose this weekend before I saw this Ep. But came up with an improved variant - Add 1 Barspoon of an Allspice Dram. Then finish with grating some fresh cinnamon on top. Will be AWESOME in the fall winter. Came up with this change while making myself a Lion's Tail.
thank you for a new video! I was just starting to watch other bartenders on yt that are good but not as great as you
That Scotty appearance really made this one of the best videos on the channel... I found surprising the egg white advice on NY to make the wine float better... I tried both with and without and i works better with for me... maybe i just need more practice but you'll end up with 3 layers and that also adds to the visual component
Sours are some of my favourite cocktails to make and you released this on my birthday! Awesome!
Here's my very own signature cocktail if you ever want to make a video on it!
I call her the Citririquisimo!
60ml Spiced rum
30ml Pineapple Juice
30ml Orange juice
15ml Lime Juice
15ml Curacao Triple Sec
2 dashes of Angostura bitters
Shake it like a Polaroid picture
Serve in a Tom Collins over ice
Garnish with a lime leaf and orange zest
So my dad’s favorite spirit has always been tequila, and even though we hail from the city where the frozen margarita was created, we both prefer the classic cocktail. I was just telling my dad that a reposado is my go to for tequila than a joven or blanco, and glad that you share that opinion.
Love the info and the way the show is constructed. A++ The pours though man, tighten that up.
Thank you Greg, a steakhouse chain out here, called Logan's Roadhouse had a drink called a "Jack and Diane" which, thanks to you, I know know is a New York Whiskey Sour. Maybe I can finally recreate it.
Great episode, summing up some excellent drinks. Sours are my favorite summer drinks so with the Jack Rose, Sidecar and Last Word I have some great drinks to make at home to look forward to. However, I think you missed the (arguably) best sour of them all: Pisco Sour. I learned to love Pisco on a visit to Chile 25 years ago and I'll drink it in any form it can be served, but I don't think I know of a spirit that gels so well with lime or lemon juice as Pisco, and there's some fierce competition here with Tequila, Mezcal, and Rum. The egg white is a must, obviously, in a Pisco Sour and so are the drops of bitters on top. For those who have a few minutes to spare, I'll share my first encounter with Pisco Sour, which obviously was from Chile. I was planning to take an early morning bus from capital Santiago to Arica in the very north of Chile, a 34 hour long bus trip. The night before I was partying with my friends until the early hours so I only got a few hours of sleep and woke up late. I had to run through the city to the bus terminal with my rucksack, severely hungover, and with the sweat pouring down. Caught the bus with minutes to spare and got in, sat down, and immediately fell asleep. I must have made quite an entrance, last man aboard, running, sweaty, the only gringo on the bus, and slumps into the seat, says hello to the neighbouring passengers and falls asleep within a minute. And did I sleep? It was afternoon, around 3pm when I finally woke up. I kid you not, the bus steward and all the passengers cheered when I woke up, the bus driver even made a special announcement! So I was Mr. Popular on the bus. After dinner, the steward was serving everybody on board Pisco Sours and he made sure I was entertained after hearing I've never tried it. It was the longest bus ride of my life but also one of the best. The friendliness and joy of all the co-travellers and the bus staff made it a wonderful experience, and the Pisco Sour was part of topping it. I've loved it ever since.
I made one for my mom after work but used rum instead of rye or whiskey and she said it was pretty good also added a bit of orange juice
I don't know if you're still calorie restricting, but can I say you're looking so good Greg! The cut between the Trade ad and the whiskey sour had me so motivated to start working out again! You're still gorgeous any weight you are, but still proud of the effort you've put in; thoroughly enjoyed this episode Greg!
Jack Rose was my 4th of July cocktail since Apple Jack is the OG American spirit, and because they're so dang refreshing.
Yes! Would love to see the mixology start easy and move up to advanced in future episodes. Would help my mixing skills
I love the longer videos!
The glass was a great choice for the drink. it really looked good in it.
I love New York Sours! I had one with a cinnamon simple syrup and I can’t remember which red wine, but omg. Such a cozy drink
Great video, love your stuff
The Banana Daiquiri was always my Grandpa (of blessed memory)'s favorite sour. Made that every Summer Saturday without fail.
Keep making long videos, I like the detail and history
So just want to say that I love your videos and the fact that you experiment with various ingredients that many people might not typically think to add to a drink or might not have on hand. I actually took inspiration from this and came up with what I like to call a whiskey sour apple, which actually uses citric acid instead of using any sort of citrus juice for the sour aspect. I use Jim Beam Apple, apple juice, citric acid and simple syrup. Everything combined gives it a very nice granny Smith tartness without the overly sweetness one would expect from something that has a higher sugar content like this drink. An egg white can be used to add a different mouth feel, but it's not required.
Recipe is as follows:
1.5 oz Jim Beam Apple Bourbon
1 oz Apple Juice
0.5 oz Simple Syrup
0.25 tsp Citric Acid
Combine in a shaker with ice, shake well, and strain over ice into a rocks glass
Love your channel. It's been great to experiment with making cocktails since bars have been closed.
Just saw your coffee add though and had to say that I really hope you're washing your filter before making pour over, especially the Chemex ones. Your get a much better flavor from your beans if you start with a wet filter.
I made a clarified NY Sour - they whey added to the drink made it foam up well when shaken and the float gave it three perfect layers: foam, wine and sour
Thanks for the content, mate
Closing in on a million!
I found this channel and immediately went on a hyperfocused binge.... everything looks so good, it makes me wish I wasn't diabetic 😭
Love the channel man! Great original content! Also could there be possible merch in the future? It would be freakin awesome to rock a how to drink hat and or hoodie!!!
Your videos are soo chill and cool, that it made me want to drink.

I love sours with amaro or amaretto
Some really great advice. I love a really good sour. And you picked some great one to do.!!
Man, sooooo close to 1 mil. You can do it, I want to see that fancy plaque! Thanks for the Mai Tai recipe btw, it's become a fave in the house.
When I hit 1mil I’ll still wait a year for the plaque
Subscribed to Trade from your channel a while back and have been loving it. Also so cool to see that the Dark (which has been my favorite up to this point) was used for the add. Same tastes in alcohols and coffee apparently lmao.
Greg….. that New York sour. Wow! This is sublime
Sours are my go-to in any situation!
I approve of your assessment. I've never had a sidecar that was as good as the cognac I used to make it, so I don't really drink them anymore.
Have to say mate, todays episode is incredibly interesting. thanks, loved it.
I realized that when I first subscribed, you had just under 300k subs. Now, your subs are at just short of 1 million. Congratulations Greg...but my liver would like to have a few words with you.

That is always one of my favorites about your channel. Along with the history lessons.
Thank you and as always God Bless.
This is super helpful thx!
I made the New York sour from your earlier video (with the egg white) the other week and absolutely loved it. I'll definitely need to try it without the egg white now! It did add a nice texture, but is admittedly a bit of a hassle.
This man job sounds awesome not only gets to make awesome drinks also gets to drink them
The classic whiskey sour is my favorite cocktail to make and to drink. It's so wonderful and I also love the New York sour variation as well but I'm not very good at making it lol
If you are looking for another great sour drink, but somewhat more rare, at least to get a hold of in a bar outside och Chile (or Peru), Check out the Pisco Sour! there is a lot of interesting squabbles of which country really invented the grape spirit of Pisco.
but this was a great episode to get good variation on starter drinks for the base spirits for beginners!
Good Job!

I really like the camera angle you used for the close ups for the jack rose!!!
I know this was posted 3 hours ago but I just got home from work, and as I was getting out of the car I thought to myself "I need a sour of some kind." I get in the house and -boom- there's this video just encouraging me, telling me I made the right choice.
